It's because the scanned coppy they give you is free.  You have 
to buy the book so you don't get an entirely free copy.  You 
still get both the scan and the hard copy book you can resell, so 
really you're getting two books for the price of one.  Not 
something I would think anyone should complain about.

That's the got ya they have come up with when the blind student
acquires books for school. They want you to invest money in the
friggen hard copy, don't ask me why when, everybody knows we're 
not
gonna use the book!
