[nabs-l] understanding hard concepts such as eletricity flow and others in your head

Hi,

I am a Physics major, so concepts like the one you describe come up all the
time in my classes. If it's any consolation, no one can actually see
electricity flowing through something, so these ideas are pretty abstract
for your sighted peers as well. I had some trouble with it, myself, when I
first took second semester physics and was introduced to Electricity and
Magnetism. One thing that helped me a lot was actually just talking about
the ideas with someone who has heard about them before. They don't
necessarily have to be an expert, as long as they're willing to listen
actively to your description of the idea and ask you questions and
basically have a conversation about it the way you would have a
conversation about a book or current events. This really helped me figure
out exactly what I was not quite understanding and gradually build my own
understanding as I explained things to my friend and asked and answered
questions about it. The more you talk about an idea, the more it starts to
feel natural to you. You might have to combine your talking with
research/review of your notes and textbook to fill in any gaps you find in
your understanding. Physics isn't like other subjects where reading and
listening and memorizing are enough. You can't memorize how an electron
works. If you try to, you'll never really feel like it makes sense. To
fully understand Physics, you have to engage with it. Talk about it.
Question it. Play with the ideas the way children do.

If you have any questions or if you're in need of further assistance,
you're welcome to e-mail me off list. I am also a professional Math and
Physics tutor and would be happy to help you work thought these ideas and
make sense of them via pone or Skype if you're interested.

Best,

Jamie Principato
