In this case if you are going to a public school, I completely agree
with your school. It isn't that difficult to shorten up your grip on
your straight cane and just move your hand down a bit. Those NFB
canes are so long, that you could trip someone. I didn't know about
shortening up my cane grip until I went to the school for the blind in
Illinois. If I had, then I wouldn't have tripped someone once with my
folding cane. When I picked up my cane, I had found that when the
person tripped, my cane had broken right at one of the joints, and
couldn't be put back together again. I had to get a new cane.
