[nabs-l] NFB Cane Rant

While we need to be sensitive to the traveling situations in which we find ourselves, I wonder to what degree her school has explained to the other students that the cane plays a safety role for her as well, that it locates the beginning of flights of stairs, for example, and it helps her maneuver around people. Too often we are made responsible for the safety of everyone else without expecting that there is some education of those around us. I would frankly want to know more about this situation before I jumped on the school's bandwagon.
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

The school isn’t denying you from using your cane. When in a busy and crowded area, it is safer for you and people around you if you use a pencil grip. This allows you to safely navigate through the area with a lesser chance for your cane breaking or a tripping for those may not be paying attention to their surroundings.
