We have been very active on social media. In addition, our Blog posts have been consistent and prompt. This month’s blog post was by Miss Holly Carneal who is currently a student at the Colorado center for the blind. We are currently working on different ways to grow membership and reach out to blind students. if you would like to contact the committee, my email address is williams.tarik2- at gmail.com. Sincerely yours, Tarik Williams. Event Planning Committee: The event planning committee is currently working on hosting some regional student programming at the Arkansas State Convention in mid-October. In addition the committee is in various planning stages for multiple meet the blind month events in Utah, Virginia, California, and Arkansas. These events are to raise awareness of blindness and to provide a forum for the public to question blind students to gain a better understanding of blindness. Some of the events include non-visual cooking demonstrations, Sound scavenger hunts, and screening of the documentary "Do You Dream in Color". If any one has any questions about these events or would like to become involved with the NABS Event Planning Committee please contact the committee chair, Luke Schwinck at Luke.Schwinck at hotmail.com. Fundraising Committee: Aloha, The Fundraising Committee has been hard at work pushing programs to help achieve our goals by financially securing our proud division. This month, we have once again started our Fantasy Football League. There are a total of 38 participants, and we hope to go even higher next year. We have also begun to push restaurant fundraisers, restaurant fundraisers are a great way to help raise money, while doing the 1 thing we will all do anyway, eat! If you are interested in hosting a restaurant fundraiser in your town, please reach out to Dustin Cather, at Cather.Dustin at gmail.com This upcoming month will see us create our 2nd annual NABS cookbook, we are accepting recipes from all who would like to help. If you have an interesting and delicious recipe you would like to add to our cookbook, please reach out to Edward Shaham, at personal.edward at gmail.com. In January, we will again be funding 50 students to attend Washington Seminar. At this amazing event, we will also be holding our annual NABS cafe, which will hold host to our annual auction. We hope to make this year better than ever, but this can only happen with your help. If you, or someone you know would like to donate a basket or an item towards our auction, please reach out to Fundraising Chair Shannon Cantan at ShannonCantan.NFB at gmail.com. Legislative Committee: The Legislative toolkit is now complete and breaks down into sections on how the legislative process works! Prepare now for Washington Seminar! It’s imperative to have a nice, large group of students at Washington Seminar (January 29-February 02). If you have any questions, please reach out to Syed Rizvi at 413-250-3523. Blog Post: I believe the 55th annual state convention of the national Federation of the Blind of Missouri was a success. I enjoyed the fellowship that convention always brings. It was wonderful to catch up with friends, as well as meet other Federation family members. It was great to have so many Federationists who serve on the national level give presentations. One of the highlights of the convention weekend was getting the opportunity to celebrate Gary Wunder, our immediate past president, who held the office for thirty-seven years. Many people shared their favorite memories of Gary and thanked him for his service. Our banquet was also themed to honor Gary. He has acquired the taste for donuts, so the two hosting chapters decided to create doughnut-themed centerpieces. The banquet speech, given by the national representative, Ron Brown, was entertaining an encouraging. Another highlight of convention was having the opportunity to attend a one-touch seminar. One-touch is a self-defense course designed to empower those with disabilities. We learned basic techniques for defending ourselves. The instructors clearly explained the techniques and gave us scenarios we may encounter where they would be useful. One skill we learned was what to do in the event that someone attempts to assist us in a street crossing when we do not wish to have assistance. I left the session feeling more confident and armed with valuable knowledge. I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar for blind parents. The committee discussed techniques for caring for children of all ages. We were also given the opportunity to look at items such as thermometers for infants. We were able to practice tools such as pulling a stroller behind us. The committee put a lot of thought into this seminar. I learned many skills and feel more confident in my parenting abilities should I choose to have children. The convention was a great experience. The speeches and sessions were filled with positive information that reflects the philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind. We heard from the Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, and individuals from Congress. There was also someone representing each of the three NFB training centers. We had two interesting and thought provoking presentations. A Federationist, who works for the FBI, talked about his career and how a blind person could go about getting a job with the FBI. We had another Federationist, who shared memories of him turkey hunting without vision. The speakers were well prepared. When it came time to hold elections, there were quite a few positions open. I believe the Missouri Affiliate has a very bright future. We have a strong leadership in our state with many mentors. In the next few years, we will see a lot of growth in this affiliate. We have some newer members who have extraordinary ideas and older members who know the ins and outs of the organization and are open to implementing new initiatives. If everyone works together, we will be building the Federation and reaching more blind people with our positive philosophy on blindness. State Updates: Arizona: Greetings from the great hot state of Arizona. We have survived another summer with high temperatures well above 110. We did make things even hotter this summer by firing up our students during our 2017 Arizona State Convention. We are so pumped after our convention where we had Kathryn Webster serving as our NABS Rep. President Webster delivered well organized and truly powerful messages to our student membership. Thank you Kathryn for your inspiration, support, and leadership in Arizona. We would also like to introduce our 2017-2018 Arizona Association of Blind Students board. President | Bryan Duarte 1st Vice President | Brittany Bombay 2nd Vice President | Jessica Rojas Secretary | Katie Cuppy Treasurer | Isaac Zwinger Board Member | Christian Able Board Member | Amanda Abel Thank you to the previous board and welcome to the new board members. Let’s go build this federation! Pennsylvania: Hello Federation Family! The Pennsylvania Student division has been hard at work preparing for the student seminar and events at our state convention to be held during the first weekend in November. If you know any PA students in your state, or students from your state studying in PA please share the following information with them: The Pennsylvania Association of Blind Students is proud to announce our 2017 PABS seminar: LIVE!!! To be held at the 77th Pennsylvania State convention from Friday, November 3 , through noon on Sunday, November 5 , in State College, PA. Join us for pizza, ice cream, good music, fun people, and real talks about whatever is on your mind. Meet students and young professionals your own age and ask the questions about life that you can't ask your sighted parents, friends or siblings. It'll be fun, informative and you're guaranteed to make new friends by the end of the weekend. Come for our Seminar and pizza party on Friday night; Student breakfast on Saturday morning; and outing to the nearby creamery over the weekend. It's time to LIVE!!! (Lead an Independent, Vibrant Existence) Logistics: Pennsylvania will graciously assist in covering student expenses if you reach out to either student president Lizzy Muhammad (484) 624:9778 lizzym0827 at gmail.com or State president Jim Antonacci (215) 988:0888 ?pres at nfbp.org? Before October 15th. Don't wait!!! See you there! Wisconsin: WABS is attempting to put plans in place for a seminar late next month. This seminar's focus will be on recruitment, teamwork, and socialization, (as we hope to include a community interaction component should the opportunity be there to do so), and a fun, confidence-building activity in the form of rock-climbing at a local climbing gym in Madison. We are holding off on fund-raising until after this fall seminar has passed. We are small in number, and need to grow and thrive as a student division. Any suggestions for accomplishing this task would be most welcome. Thank you. Utah: Greetings students! I hope this semester is going well for you all! The Utah Association of Blind Students (UABS) is excited to announce our Fall Student Seminar to take place on October 21, 2017 from 3-7pm at the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (250 North 1950 West Salt Lake City, UT) Come meet fellow students, learn, eat yummy food, and have fun! Are they a college student? Whether you have a reader in the classroom depends on what accommodations the student wants. The office of student disabilities can set up note takers for class if the students needs that. With that said, I think it may be beneficial as an accommodation because when you are doing an internship or student teaching, you are having to go into someone else's classroom and you have to adapt to their classroom, their teaching style, their way of doing things, etc....and it isn't always as conducive to a blind teacher who is just starting out. So an extra set of eyes, so to speak, may be beneficial. Once they get a classroom of their own and can do things more to their liking, it may or may not be necessary. I would say it is definitely a reasonable accommodation and I would say that it is the responsibility of the college or university to provide that accommodation, as it is a required part of earning their degree, just as any other class is. It just happens that this classwork is being done outside the university campus. -----Original Message----- From: Jessica Williams via NABS-L To: National Association of Blind Students mailing list Cc: Jessica Williams Sent: Sun, Oct 1, 2017 7:36 pm Subject: Re: [nabs-l] Seeking resources for a blind intern student No, they have not started their intern the College of education have reached out to the department of Student Disability Services and wanted to know do the students need to have a reader in the classroom or not, And if so do vocational rehab Sponsor this type of accommodation ? Message-ID: <000001d33c5f$892688c0$9b739a40$@gmail.com> Good Morning Everyone "Oh, the humanity. My nerves cannot bare it." This was my attitude this morning when I showered and got the email confirming my reservation for the van rental at Enterprise. Yes, I know that the first question should be "Why in the world does Robert, the guy with a guide dog, have a car rental confirmation?" Well,. Saturday is the big day. The Virginia Association of Blind Students' first "Meet the Blind Month" event will be taking place! As a division, I am so proud of VABS and its members/board for all the hard work they put into this event. I encourage all of you, if you are in the area, to take a chance to relax, take in the cool breeze of the ocean front, and enjoy throwing large heavy balls with holes in them down a runway. Also, if you cannot make it, I will not be angry with you, just a little disappointed. To avoid this disappointment, simply buy a VABS raffle ticket. We are raffling off a brand-new Amazon Tap speaker. The Tap, unlike the Dot or Echo, is portable enough that it does not need a plugged-in source of power. The Tap does all the functions of the Echo and Dot, including Alexa voice command, WIFI, and Bluetooth capabilities, all while being battery operated. Thus, this speaker is useful on long car rides, in remote cabin trips to the mountains, and even to beach parties next summer during national convention. If you are interested in buying a ticket, please contact me via email or by phone. You can buy a ticket in person or even, get this, buy one over the phone. VABS will accept payments through Square Cash if you would like to purchase a raffle ticket. Tickets are $5 each and I welcome the support. Below are the event details. When: Saturday, October 7, 2017 Where: Pin Boys at the Beach 1577 Laskin Rd. Ste. 100 Virginia Beach, VA 23451 Time: 1-5pm For more information about this event or to buy a raffle ticket. SPSS is partially accessible, but requires a paid license or screen reader access on a public computer. R is another free option, but is harder to learn than the site I mentioned above. Microsoft Excel will also do a lot of basic stats, and is accessible. It's also not a free program, which means that like SPSS, the student would either need to buy a license, or have access to a public computer with a screen reader. Sighted students usually use lab computers with SPSS or SAS installed on them, but blind students may not have screen reader access on those computers. That's why I usually recommend the free solutions first, like Excel or GraphPad, unless there's a computer on campus with both the sstats software and a screen reader on it. I am looking for three girls to room with me at Capital Hill Holiday Inn the hotel where all of the meetings are taken place. This year Washington Seminar is from January 28 to Feb 2. Also, I was wondering if I am still allowed to apply for the NABS scholarship that is in December because I received the NABS scholarship two times in a row. Not many people from Georgia usually go to Washington Seminar, so it will financially help if I am allowed to apply for the scholarship again. Also, how do blind people buy a plane ticket. Usually my dad does it for me, but this time I would like to do it myself. Also, what are some tips on planning a trip like Washington Seminar. I've had sighted people look me up that way to discuss mainstream scholarships so it's not that uncommon. It'll be a good example of using your available resources should that come up in an interview and is great networking prep for your future job search. The only difference between a sighted person and a blind person buying plane tickets would be assistive technology used. I always buy plane tickets online either through google flights or expedia which can search prices for many different airlines, and then just follow the steps. It will tell you what to do. Or if there is a certain airline you prefer, search for their website. As far as convincing your parents to let you go, well that depends on a lot of factors. Have you gone to NFB or other events on your own? What are your parents specific concerns? I would start from there. So excited it feels like Christmas? Or so excited it feels like you just got asked on a date? Or maybe like me and your so excited it feels like you just bought fresh Krispy Kreme doughnuts and they're still hot? Regardless the level of excitement, I would just like to clarify some things for those of you that are awesome and are attending the VABS Bowling Event on Saturday. Here are some ground rules: 1. I will be at the lane early. When you get there, call me or ask someone that works there where Robert is. I am hoping to have everyone choose the groups they want to bowl on the same lane with. 2. Be sure to know your shoe size. I don't know how many times I have gone bowling and someone can't tell what shoe they should get. 3. If you require bumpers, let me know. The lanes will have rails already, but some people like those bumper things. 4. Be sure to bring your cane. This is an awareness event and we are proudly displaying them for the alley to see. 5. There is no registration, so when you get there, just be ready to bowl. Each game costs $2. I am pretty sure we can probably get about 3 games out of the time slot we have so I suggest having $6 with you to pay for that. 6. Advertise and support the raffle for the Amazon Tap. We will be selling raffle tickets up until the end of the event at 5pm. Tickets are $5. 7. Most importantly, do not order the Fried Pickles before me. I love those things. Remember to bring your sense of humor and have fun. We hope to enjoy a great afternoon of networking, friendship, and awareness. VABS thanks you for all your support. My phone number is in the signature if there are any questions you may have for me. Best Regards Robert E. Great questions! NABS, with the help of our national treasury, will be awarding financial sponsorships to a select group of students. Applications will go live in November and notifications will be distributed in December, in time to book travel, etc. Funding is on a need-base, factoring in your involvement in the Federation and your experience with legislative action. All students are encouraged to apply. More information to come. Shikha: I use different applications on my iPhone, such as Expedia, Travelocity, or any particular airline. I rely so heavily on these applications and definitely encourage you to look into flight booking independently, as most are accessible. Let's say your guide dog buried your train ticket, you forgot to take off work, or I don't know you were abducted by aliens. Whatever the reason, you are too able to be awesome with the students at the bowling alley. The next question becomes how can you help promote the division and the message that we are conveying for the Federation? Well, there are two simple answers to that question. 1. Support VABS by buying a raffle ticket for an Amazon Tap. Tickets are $5. We are selling tickets at the event and we also can accept Square Cash App payments as well. 2. Promote the event and the message on social media. We are in the age of Facebook and the era of the Tweet. Please take time to use your thumb to promote the VABS event and share any pictures, posts, or videos you come across of us at the event tomorrow. This will show the public that not only are we a movement to be aware of, but also a movement that is fully supported both at the event and abroad. If you promote our event on social media, the only thing we ask is to attach the hashtag #BWTB and #VABS to your posts. Also, if you are trying to track down any posts you think people may have made so that you can share them, simply type those hashtags into the search edit box on Facebook and Twitter and you should have access to all public posts made by our members and allies. Even this action is support and seeing as this is a first-time event for us, it would mean a lot to us if support on all fronts was seen, heard, and felt. Best Regards Robert E. I first got it when I was doing my blindness training, and my tech instructor suggested that I use Firefox rather than IE, because there is better support. However, I've recently attempted to download a couple of things, including the HumanWare Companion software so I can use my Victor Stream with my laptop, as well as a radio show. In both instances, when I hit enter on the download link, my computer was completely unresponsive and didn't click on the link, although, with the Companion software, my computer did ask me if I wanted to save the installation file, and I said yes, but it didn't do anything afterword. All other links work fine on my computer except for the download link. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Do I need to set up some kind of download manager for Firefox? I've never had any issues downloading anything with Internet Explorer on my desktop, and I've also never changed browsers on my laptop. Is the download/installation process the same on both browsers? I hope to hear from you all soon. I tried using the command alt f and, it didn't work so, I could create a new folder for that application/file. so, I know that was for windows 7 so, how do I create folders in windows 10 by using jfw 18? what are the key commands for it? I have never used windows 10 so, i'm learning while I go.. so, far I have figured it out but, some help would be appreciated.. also, are there other keystrokes by using jfw18 for windows 10 and, if there is how do I get a copy of them? thanks again in advance and, I will talk to you all soon! hugs, amy _______________________________________________ NABS-L mailing list NABS-L at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nabs-l_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for NABS-L: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nabs-l_nfbnet.org/ljmaher%40swbell.net From louvins at gmail.com Mon Oct 9 12:13:27 2017 From: louvins at gmail.com (Joshua Hendrickson) Date: Mon, 9 Oct 2017 07:13:27 -0500 Subject: [nabs-l] creating folders using windows 10 In-Reply-To: <002301d340f1$6f1528b0$4d3f7a10$@swbell.net> References: <002301d340f1$6f1528b0$4d3f7a10$@swbell.net> Message-ID: Also, try ctrl shift n. You can also use the menus for most actions. Hit the alt key, then tab, then either tab through all the menu options or use control-right arrow to move between submenus and then tab through the options in the submenu you want. Windows 10 makes use of many sub-options: if you hear "collapsed" after an item is spoken, you can find more options by pressing the spacebar. On "New," for instance, you'll get options to create a new folder, shortcut, etc. HTH, Sarah On Oct 9, 2017, at 8:55 AM, Steve Jacobson via NABS-L wrote: Also, once no files are selected, you can bring up the Context menu using the Applications key next to the RIGHT CONTROL key or SHIFT F10. I greet you on National Dessert Day, truly a great American holiday. What would go down better than a yummy treat, how about $2500, $1000, or even $500. That could be yours starting today if you participate in the Amazing Colorado Raffle. Here's how it works. You go to: www.nfbco.org/amazing-colorado-raffle and purchase your tickets. That's as easy as eating pumpkin pie. Tickets are $10 or $20 for three or multiples thereof. For example, $100 would get you fifteen tickets. Now the winning tickets will be ddrawn at the Annual Banquet of the NFB of Colorado on October 28th and you need not be present to win, although we'd love to have you. We will have a great dessert at our banquet, among other great things. Online sales will end as of 11:59 pm on October 22nd, Rocky Mountain time. In person tickets will be sold up to the time of the drawing. If the online option won't work for you, please call Lisa Bonderson, 303 504-5979, or Lorinda Riddle, 303 778-1130, Ext 236, and we can take orders over the phone and process your credit or debit cards. I thank you in advance for supporting the NFB of Colorado!! These monies are used to support our scholarship and BELL programs. Dessertfully yours, Scott LaBarre, President, NFB Colorado P.S. Does anyone make an awesome banana cream pudding? I think that's my favorite. Please go to: www.nfbco.org/amazing-colorado-raffle right away! Unfortunately, this campaign seems to bare a striking (and disturbing) resemblance to the Foundation Fighting Blindness's #HowEyeSeeIt campaign of last October, which the Federation pushed back against strategically and forcefully. It seems to me that, if this campaign is gaining popularity as the previous one did, we may have to oppose it in a similar fashion. This is very disturbing that this is happening again. By the way, I believe that when it happened the last time, there was a message that went out asking us to send videos about the different things that we are capable of. I strongly suggest doing this and sending them to the organization if possible, so that they can see that we're people just like them, who just happen to be bl; that IS NOT what holds us back. In the videos, we could maybe share a short description of our life story (like what we're studying in college, what jobs people might be doing etc), followed by a specific action/talent we are capable of doing, like saying hello in another language or playing the piano (or any other musical instrument). Thanks again for sharing, Sami ----- Original Message ----- From: Armando Vias via NABS-L wrote: Jordan: Thank you for sharing. As for storing the files on your iPhone, I'm afraid that the easiest and most efficient way to do it would be to save the files in a Dropbox folder and play them using the Dropbox app. To make this work, though, you would have to either clean out your Dropbox (which is probably a good idea anyway) or set up a separate account dedicated to your therapy work. You could also plug your iPhone into your computer and run the music through iTunes, which will convert the files to M4A format and download them to your library in the Music app. You could then make a playlist with your massage session songs and play them directly from your music library. However, iTunes for PC isn't the most accessible program in the world, and I'm unfortunately not familiar with it enough to tell you how to do the conversion. Hopefully someone who has more experience with using iTunes nonvisually than I could provide clearer instructions. Hope this helps, Chris -----Original Message----- From: NABS-L [mailto:nabs-l-bounces at nfbnet.org] On Behalf Of Kristen via NABS-L Sent: Tuesday, October 24, 2017 1:55 PM To: nabs-l at nfbnet.org Cc: Kristen Subject: [nabs-l] Storing Music Offline Hi- I am a massage therapist and receive free music files as part of a membership. What this website does is to let you create a radio station, and they decided to discriminate blind people? What are they thinking!!!!! They think that we don't exist. Here is my email that I sent to them. I think that I accidentally spammed them because of the lack of accessibility and not knowing that the message has been sent. The website is www.zenolive.com. Don't even think about signing up to manage a radio station. It's more worse. NVDA just says clickable, clickable, clickable for some of the buttons, but not all. Hey. I have a problem with the website. There is LOTS of accessibility issues. As a blind teenager, I rely on a screen-reader called NVDA. NVDA stands for Non-Visual Desktop Access. The problem is that most of the clickable buttons are unlabeled and it is making it difficult for me, and possibly other blind users unable to fully use the website to broadcast. I would recommend you to check out this website called Webaim. It provides training on web accessibility. The website is www.webaim.org. To learn more about NVDA, visit this website at www.nvaccess.org I also encourage you to contact the National Federation of The Blind. It is an organization for the blind that advocates for the blind. Check out their website at www.nfb.org I hope that this website will become accessible to all blind and low vision users. We hope you have had a fun and productive month! Attached you will find NABS Notes for the month of October! Chelsea Peahl Secretary, National Association of Blind Students http://nabslink.org/content/nabs-notes-october-2017 NABS Notes: October 2017 In this issue, you will find: • President’s Note • Board Meeting Minutes • 2018 Washington Seminar Funding Program • NABS Legislative Toolkit • October Blog Post • Committee Updates • State Updates President’s Note: Thank you for reading our monthly bulletin! The National Association of Blind Students (NABS) is expanding and progressing each day with the help of our members. During the months of September and October, we had national student leadership present at the state conventions in Arizona, West Virginia, North Carolina, Iowa, Arkansas, Georgia, Minnesota, Illinois, and Colorado. We had representation at the Utah and Louisiana student seminars. Our energy is high and commitment is contagious. In this month’s President’s Note, I want to welcome you to join the conversation. We would not be where we are today without the overwhelming support from our national leaders and local members. Without suggestions and guidance from each of you, we don’t know what direction our membership wants to go in, so grab a seat at the table. I invite you to join in on a committee call or attend a membership call at the end of each month. Whatever you do, we want your voice to be heard loud and clear. With the 2018 Washington Seminar quickly approaching, we need your input more than ever. More importantly, we need your personal testimonies, expressing a high priority for equal access to education. Please communicate with Chairman Syed Rizvi to explore this initiative. With Meet the Blind Month approaching its final day, please do not forget that we should treat each day as a way to educate the public on our skills as competent and successful blind students. Whether it is sitting down with a peer after a group project, educating the nice lady behind the Star Buck’s counter, or picking up the phone and calling a local non-profit, let’s make moves to ensure that the National Federation of the Blind’s philosophy is being shared widely within our communities. We never want to let an opportunity be missed because we didn’t want to speak up. If you need help figuring out the one minute elevator pitch on your story, reach out. We in NABS are eager to help explore your potential as a blind student. Again, thank you for your dedication and participation in the National Association of Blind Students! Don’t be strangers! October Blog Post Enjoy this October blog post written by Elizabeth Rouse. She is a sophomore at Central College located in Iowa. Miss Rouse studies English and hopes to pursue a career in writing. We hope you enjoy reading her interesting story on past experiences during the time of Halloween. Every October when I was young, my parents took me to a pumpkin patch near my grandparents’ home. There were tons of fun activities to partake in, such as feeding animals in the petting zoo, eating cinnamon and sugar donuts, and wandering through a corn maze. However, my favorite part of this trip was walking through the haunted house with my grandfather. No matter how old I was, my grandfather would insist on holding my hand so that I could “protect him.” Ironically, because of my blindness, my grandfather was always protecting me from unforeseen dangers: stairs, doors, other patrons, et cetera. Many would see this as a difficult task, walking through a dark haunted house. However, I am proud to say that now, I can go through these dark places without my grandfather while using my cane. Although I have grown out of the haunted house stage of my life, I can still enjoy the pumpkin patch. Choosing the perfect pumpkin is all about feeling. Everyone gets lost in a corn maze, so as long as I refrain from tripping, I blend in with my peers (except for the cane in my hand.) My blindness has never hindered me from embracing my childlike love of Halloween. It is my hope that in sharing this memory, you will learn to love this holiday in just the same way. Committee Updates: Fundraising Committee: NABS Cafe, Giving Tuesday, and the 2nd annual NABS cookbook are just some of the many items on the agenda for the fundraising committee. On November 28, 2017, Giving Tuesday will again be happening nationally. On a day where so many non-profits receive funds from various donors, we hope to be a part of the festivities. We are in the process of creating a website that will highlight many of the students who have benefited from NABS nationally, this website will enable donors to see just how meaningful this division is to our students. If you have any questions, or have ideas of potential donors who would be interested in the mission of NABS, please e-mail Co-Chair Dustin Cather at Cather.Dustin at gmail.com Although NABS Cafe will not be taking place until the end of January 2018, we are hard at work preparing for our annual auction. Whether it’s technology, fragrances, autographed memorabilia, baskets, or general donations, we are requesting assistance in getting items from all of you, if you would like to help us in any way, please e-mail Co-chair Janae burgmeier at janae.burgmeier at gmail.com Thanks to the help of so many of you, we are proud to say that we are adding the finishing touches to the 2nd annual NABS cookbook, with recipes on shakes, non-bake desserts, Paleoitems, and so much more, we have no doubt there’s something for everybody. For any questions please contact committee chair Luke Schwinck at luke.schwinck at hotmail.com State Updates: Arizona: As the temperature begins to cool down ever so slowly we are busy hosting events for Meet the Blind Month. So far the Arizona affiliate along with students have been a part of several blindness awareness events including a viewing of the film "Do You Dream in Color" at our state capital. During this event we were fortunate to have two state legislators come speak to us about their support for the work we are doing. We also have participated in a large event in Tucson hosting a table and handing out literature. In the Phoenix area Brittany Bomboy along with the East Valley chapter went to the local libraries and read Braille with kids. Still to come we are planning to have a day of service at a local charity called "Feed My Starving Children" making food boxes. Thank you all for the work you are doing and we are so grateful to be working with you to raise awareness around blindness. Let’s continue to build this federation and show society that blindness is not a characteristic which will hold us back. Massachusetts: Hello fellow Federationists! October was a great month for the Massachusetts Association of Blind Students. We just hosted our fall social on Saturday, October 14. For Meet the Blind Month, we decided to take a trip out into our community to one of the most visual places you can go, the Museum of Fine Arts. Our treasurer, Meaghan Roper, had arranged for us to take a "Feeling for Form" tour, which is an accessible tour of the museum. The guides provided vivid, detailed descriptions of the marvelous artwork. We also got to participate in tactile exploration of some of the sculptures. That's right! We got to touch the super old, super cool artwork! How awesome is that? It was a wonderful experience for our students, who really enjoyed the tour, but it also was a chance to convey in important message to our community. Even the most visual of activities can be made accessible and should be made accessible. Blind people are fully able to engage and participate in any activity. The only thing in our way is access barriers. Shout out to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for having this lovely program to make the museum accessible. We didn't have to use those pesky audio description things that still require a sighted person to tell you the correct number to input for each art piece. We also got to engage with our guides about blindness issues, which was a wonderful chance to educate some people directly. They were very receptive. We really appreciate them donating their time to help make this fall social event possible. We look forward to planning more events like this one! Here's to a fantastic school year, federation family! Iowa: Here in Iowa we are very excited to announce that we are now an official student division!! We have been working hard since our state convention. We have started forming committees and working on expanding our membership. Louisiana: The Louisiana Association of Blind Students is excited, because our annual student seminar is coming up. From Friday, November 3 to Sunday, November 5, blind students from all across the state will gather in Ruston, at the Louisiana Center for the Blind, to learn the message of the NFB and socialize with other high school and college students. Our theme this year is "Let the Misconceptions Fall Away." This is the most important time of year for LABS, and we're looking forward to another great seminar! Utah: Greetings Students! On October 21, we hosted our second successful Fall Student Seminar! Thank you to everyone who attended and participated! If you missed our seminar, don’t worry! We have monthly conference calls on the third Wednesday of every month at 8:30 PM MST. The call line is 605-475-4000 and the code is 230539. We’d love to have you participate! The National Association of Blind Students is a proud division of the National Federation of the Blind. Follow us on Twitter @nabslink, friend us on Facebook NABS Link, and visit our web site www.nabslink.org. Get involved. Live the life you want; blindness is not what holds us back.
