National Convention Debrief:
NABS had a productive and exciting week at this year’s National Convention in Las Vegas! Whether you were experiencing the thrill in person or following the live stream from home, we want to thank you, the membership, for all of your contributions. It is our students who make NABS the powerful resource and network we are so proud of.
NABS made a rousing presence with our engaging events:
Annual NABS Business Meeting
American Action Fund 100th Anniversary | Braille Carnival
We want to extend a huge thank you to all of our student volunteers who made these events run smoothly and successfully. We would also like to thank our NABS Board for all of their hard work behind the scenes and at center stage.
As we come out of this year’s convention, we would like to say a hearty farewell to our departing board members: Tarik Williams and Janae Burgmeier, and we usher in our new board members with the promise of so many possibilities to shape our future.
Introducing the 2019 – 2020 NABS Board:
President: Kathryn Webster
1st Vice President: Syed Rizvi
2nd Vice President: Kenia Flores
Secretary: Mausam Mehta
Treasurer: Dustin Cather
Board Member 1: Trisha Kulkarni
Board Member 2: Johna Wright
Board Member 3: Elizabeth Rouse
Board Member 4: Justin Salisbury
Congratulations and onward as we work to level the playing field for blind students across the nation!
NFB Open House Gatherings:
Many people do not know the National Federation of the Blind, and may be reluctant to attend a local chapter meeting where you may have your questions answered. We will be hosting teleconferences for individuals that are curious about the National Federation of the Blind. The teleconference will present you with an opportunity to receive information from and ask questions of Federationists. We will be able to dispel the myths and misconceptions about the NFB and highlight the benefits of membership. These calls are specifically intended for individuals who are curious about our organization and would benefit from learning about us in an educational environment.
The calls will take place on the third Sunday of each even numbered month at 4pm eastern and the third Wednesday of each odd numbered month at 8pm eastern. Our first two calls will be Sunday, August 18 and Wednesday, September 18.
In order to participate, RSVP by emailing membership at nfb.org or calling 410-659-9314, extension 2509, and let us know which call date works best for you!
Potential Chemistry Employment Opportunity:
If you are a student who has taken one or more undergraduate chemistry courses, and are currently considering a major in chemistry or related field, regarding a possible internship project involving the acquisition of spectral data using an interface for blind/ low-vision users. Please contact Dr. Alfred D'Agostino, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at adagostino at ndm.edu with your name, name of institution at which you are studying, your intended major, and the chemistry course/ courses you have taken.
2019-2020 NABS Committees:
We are so pumped to announce our 2019-20 national student division committees, some of which we hope many of you will be more than interested in joining! Please find monthly meeting times below; and direct questions to the committee chairs. This year, our push is to have more voices across all of our committees. Each of you have the power to drive our efforts forward, but only if you make your voice heard.
All committees meet on the NABS conference line: 712-770-5197,,265669#.
