CRCC Asia is an organization that has been providing internships to college students from around the world in the Asia-Pacific region for the last 10 years. They encourage people with disabilities to apply, and disabled people have completed their internships in the past. CRCC Asia is excited to officially open its 2019 applications for 5 fully-funded inclusion scholarships for students from diverse backgrounds to undertake a program in Beijing or Ho Chi Minh City. The scholarships, which are part of CRCC Asia’s inclusion initiative, will support students with disabilities, women studying STEM subjects, students from foster/care leaver backgrounds, and students in the Jewish and Black (Minority Ethnic) communities to complete a month-long internship. The deadline to submit applications is November 30. Here's the application link: https://www.crccasia.com/about-us/social-responsibility/#Apply I hope you will consider applying. If you have any questions about studying or interning abroad as a blind student, drop us a line at clearinghouse at miusa.org. Since the cells on my braille display are fading, I am requesting a new braille display, but I'm not sure which one to get. I need one that has more than 20 cells, works well with Jaws and NVDA, and has internal memory. In regards to internal memory, I specifically need it to read BRF files without being connected to anything. Thoughts? Thanks. The display itself contains a microSD card slot for built-in text editing as well as to open and store any BRF files. It’s not even close to a note taker, but is a nice add-on when basic things must be done in a pinch and you don’t wish to connect to any external devices. The built quality and all 40 cells are nicely built, and could connect up to 5 bluetooth devices at once, and with it being a Freedom Scientific product JAWS will love having that display connected. I have a Polaris Braille Sense that’s ok pending on what you’re looking for. I had better luck with getting it to run with NVDA than with JAWS. If you do decide to get one, I don’t recamend HIMS because their costumer service isn’t great. There is not a lot of information on the Polaris Braille Sense on the internet either. So, I do advise you to do look at the Polaris Braille Sense as an option, particularly with making graphs using math. I think that’s one of its strengths. Meanwhile, I think that the weaknessis outweighs their strengths. The reason why I pointed out the Polaris Braille Sense is so that you know that it’s out there and have a bit of a sense of what one is like while using one. I personally would take a closer look at the Human Where Note Plus that’s either coming out or will be coming out soon. I heard better things about the latest from Human Where than I ever have with the Polaris from fellow Polaris users. "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear", Author Unknown. If not I can send it to you when I get on my computer. Also, if the Greek isn’t important to the course then I wouldn’t worry about it. Ask your professor. I have a question about current performance of the JAWS screen-reader. Here’s some context: I used NVDA for my first semester of college, and it served just about every purpose it needed to. However, earlier this year, I switched back to JAWS, thinking it would fill in some of the little gaps that weren’t working with NVDA. I have been noticing that JAWS 2019 is significantly slower on my computer than NVDA… There are also several strange bugs that, while not the end of the world, are still pretty frustrating. I am not sure whether this is due to my system configurations, or whether the update is generally slower. What are your experiences with JAWS 2019, and do you have any strategies or workarounds to improve productivity? Thanks! They sent me two practice tests, and the software tutorial to practice. I basically use a notetaker not a computer, so that took some getting used to. They also sent the talking calculator for me to use so I could practice with it. They also have on the accessibility part of their website study guides for all the parts of the GRE. For math, there is one for each of the four areas of math you need to know (arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and statistics), and they go over the concepts you need to know and present things written out in the way the computer test will have them. First, I would be contacting your counselor by email and cc her supervisor. Ask for a weekly update on your case, or ask for one every other week. You can even cc their supervisor since they both do have a boss if you need to take it all the way up there. If it’s needed, you can even schedule an appointment with them, either by phone or in person. Whether you do it by phone or in person, I would record those interactions. Then I would transcribe that meeting from your recording into words, and then after the call, send them an email saying something like: Hello X and X, whoever they are. I just wanted to confirm everything that was said in the meeting. According to you, we are going to do this and that, and whatever else. I look forward to hearing from you soon to move forward with this case. Thank you. Something like that, you can fix it up how you need to. If they don’t reply, whatever you say happened is the case because their lack of replying is a confirmation that they said those things. If nothing, absolutely nothing works, I would either keep going up the chain, or if you do end up going to CAPS, make sure you have all documentation ready to go as your evidence. Hope this helps. > On Nov 16, 2019, at 5:36 PM, Shikha via NABS-L wrote: > > Hello, > I reached out to my vr counselor on November 4 to receive nine months of job coaching from a Center for Independent Living. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for purchasing medical equipment to use in clinic settings. This would be things like bp monitors, scales, etc. I cannot read print, so they would have to speak. I was told by my professors that the devices must have an earphone jack due to Hippa regulations. I have gotten two bp monitors currently, but they don't have an earphone jack. The speech is very loud, even if it is on the lowest volume. A lot of the products I have found are made for personal use, and are not made for portability. I am a braille user, so if there is a braille alternative to using speech output, this would work as well. Are you interested in participating in a study that will result in finding solutions to accessibility issues and barriers that affect blind students at the University of Maryland? There is a group of graduate students in the College of Information Studies from the University of Maryland who are hoping to improve the usability of their website and make it more accessible to blind students who use screen readers. The goals of usability testing include establishing and validating user performance measures and identifying potential design concerns to be addressed in order to improve the accessibility and end-user satisfaction. The usability testing session will last approximately one and a half hours. If you would like to be a participant in our study, please feel free to contact the below for more details and to schedule a meeting time. We appreciate your help in their efforts to improve the user experience of blind and low-vision students at the University of Maryland.
