I would test out what works better in braille, and then I would see which works well that teachers can read. Yes, pressing enter with l usually takes you from one profile to the other. Here is my contact information. I do not mind working with you on the BrailleNote Touch, I have used it a whole lot and have gone through enough to where I can help you out. I wanted to ask if anyone has taken an animation course, and how accessible it was? Since I'm a senior in college, I'm thinking ahead of what I want to take next semester. One of the potential English classes is a combined writing and animation course, taught by an English professor and an animation prfessor. Depending on what other classes become available, I might not take this course, but I just wanted to know others' experiences. The professor said there would be quite a bit of visual elements involved, but said we could talk about it and figure something out. The library should still have some Braille music books that you can use to teach yourself. I leanred Nemeth through my K-12 schooling, but I'm sure there are some coures available. Search around online for places you can call for resources. Or if you decide to call the Library of Congress, ask if they have stuff. Thanks! Best, Cricket -- Cricket X. The usual methods I would use are pressing f6, or control+s to enable saving, but these don't seem to work. I get an error message when opening such PowerPoint files, which disappears if someone clicks "enable editing." It's been a year or so since I've been in school, and I am totally blanking on how I used to solve this problem. This didn't happen with previous computers. Also, I've noticed I basically get just a blank screen when I open PDFs. These are typical PDFs with text, not images. Is there any way I can read these without converting them to a word doc? Again, I don't remember this happening with previous laptops. I am currently using Jaws 17, but could download a newer version. These are probably pretty basic questions, but any help would be appreciated. If it is not letting you enable editing, you may have to convert it to a word document, and there are a few websites you can do that on, I am not remembering them right now since I switched to using the Mac and I haven’t used windows all that much from the early spring. Yes, sometimes pdf files will show up as blank. I would check which browser you have set as your default browser, particularly Microsoft edge is not a good browser at all, especially when viewing pdf docs. Also, if you don’t have Acrobat Reader DC, I would download it because it makes it a little bit easier to view pdf docs, especially since you can set it as the default pdf viewer. I would also try downloading NVDA since it is free, and see if it will read them to you. > On Sep 5, 2019, at 11:20 AM, Nina Marranca via NABS-L wrote: > > Regarding pdf's, does the doc show up as empty or as if it is an image? If for some reason you’re not able to read the document you can always use ctrl+shift+5 to change accessibility reading options. As for documents that have scanned images inside Jaws is able to apply OCR to them and will ask automatically if it detects there isn’t any text. I’m pretty sure NVDA should be able to do that as well. Sent from my iPhone > On 6 Sep 2019, at 06:24, JASON ALAMILLO via NABS-L wrote: > > Oh, ok, I am all excited now. As Nina said, are the pdf files images or just text files? >> >>> On Sep 5, 2019, at 11:20 AM, Nina Marranca via NABS-L wrote: >>> >>> Regarding pdf's, does the doc show up as empty or as if it is an image? Hopefully I can find someone who relates to my current scenario and can provide some guidance. Right now, I’m in a bit of a complex situation. I’ve been looking for a job for the past 4 months, and I may finally be at a point where I’m going to get an offer. It’s an incredible position in a city I’m in love with. I went in for the interview last Wednesday, and the supervisor contacted me on Friday to ask some follow-up questions. They mainly consisted of whether I felt safe with the clients. I told her I did. She’s also concerned about accessibility when it comes to me using their electronic health record to input client information. I’ll be a clinical social worker, and this is a therapist position, so using the EHR is going to be a big part of it. Their record isn’t mainstream. They developed it within the agency, so the supervisor has been trying to contact their IT people to see if they know anything about the usability with screen reading software. She called me again today and told me that she’s still trying to find answers, and she doesn’t want to extend an official offer until she knows something. I absolutely do not want this to fall through due to that unknown factor. I’ve tried contacting my counselor at Division of Services for the Blind. I feel like I’m on shaky ground and would rather have guidance and someone in my corner before proceeding. Unfortunately, my counselor has been on leave since the end of May, and the person who is covering my case has not answered my calls or returned voicemails. This is a very time sensitive situation, and it’s something I want to be on top of. The accessibility may be an obstacle, but I’ve been able to problem-solve in the past to get around it. Has anyone else been in this situation? Any suggestions, advice, or guidance would be greatly appreciated, especially from people who may be in a health-related field and have encountered electronic records. The one at my graduate internship was inaccessible, but I was able to do assessments and notes via word document. The secretary would upload the documents. I could present this, but that would be putting additional work on another employee and it’s not ideal, especially since this is an actual employment position. I’m determined to make it this last step and land this job! I wish I could say this is the last time you will encounter this level of discrimination, but we both know that is probably not the case. Hang in there, contact as many people as you can, and never hesitate to tell people about yourself and what you are doing. You never know when someone might have a great lead for you. The people who are in charge of helping to place you in an internship have no understanding of the amount of problem-solving that most of us are capable of, and it is frustrating that they can limit you so much based on their own ignorance. May I ask what types of facilities the students with eyesight are placed in? I am not very familiar with this field. It might help me to come up with some ideas. Below, please find the September blog post: The Magic of Student Seminars in the National Federation of the Blind written by our very own Justin Salisbury. The post is pasted below and attached but may also be accessed via the following link: http://nabslink.org/content/september-2019-blog-post-magic-student-seminars-national-federation-blind-justin-salisbury happy reading! The Magic of Student Seminars in the National Federation of the Blind By Justin Salisbury >From the editor:             Justin Salisbury currently serves as a board member of the National Association of Blind Students. He lives in Hawaii, where he pursues advocacy in all shapes and forms. He finds huge amounts of energy and satisfaction from bringing students together around the country. Below, he writes of his experience with regional student seminars, and the positive impact they can have on blind students everywhere. In mid-August, I had the honor of attending the 2019 NABS Pacific Regional Student Seminar. We partnered with the Enchanted Hills Camp, owned and operated by the Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco. I was tasked with leading the committee of students who planned the seminar, and we brought students from all over the west coast and some landlocked western states. We were joined by NFB of California President Tim Elder, Lighthouse CEO Bryan Bashin, Martin Becerra-Miranda and Jen Spears from the Colorado Center for the Blind, and many other great mentors and role models. We planned it months in advance, advertised, found financial support, and built many connections for a long time to come. We had dozens of students in attendance, and it was appropriately powerful for the name of the Enchanted Hills Camp. We had speakers, role-playing, and spatially interactive activities. We went hiking, had bonfires, an did a ropes course. It was a wonderful time, and I heard great reviews from students who attended. This is something that we should be proud of as a movement, but it didn’t start there. It was grown over the years, and I am blessed to have been able to grow with it. My first student seminar with the National Federation of the Blind was in 2010 in North Carolina. I participated because it was expected of me as an officer in the North Carolina Association of Blind Students, but I did not know what to expect at a seminar. The leaders ahead of me did most of the work in planning the seminar, and I was asked to co-lead three discussion groups: one on orientation and mobility on high school and college campuses, one on testing and academic accommodations and access, and one on getting involved on a high school or college campus. Working with my fellow student division leaders, I had the opportunity to facilitate discussions about blindness, to empower people to tell their stories, and to learn through the experiences and solutions of others. It was the first time I remember doing that, and I now do it almost every day. The following year, I approached the same seminar as the President of the North Carolina Association of Blind Students. One of the goals I brought to that seminar was to expand our home-cooked technology fair, which had been operated by generous volunteers from the NFB of North Carolina, to a full-blown exhibit hall. We had about 30 vendors as I remember it, and we hosted close to 100 students. We had the understanding of the importance of building something big, but we were still learning about what it was that we were building. We brought blind students together, and, like the year before, we had unwavering support from our affiliate president, Gary Ray. These two ingredients are critical. We had teams for advertising, fundraising, and other tasks related to the seminar. We built a full directory of all disability-related contacts at every institution of higher education in our state, which we continued to use afterward. The state vocational rehabilitation agency rented vans before dawn and literally brought students to our seminar. When it came to lunch time, our vice president and his team had a beautiful spread of wraps, cookies, etc. I felt like it would be most appropriate for me to wait for everyone else and then go to the back of the line, so I did. Someone else came up behind me. It was George Wurtzel, who was attending the seminar as a representative of BLIND, Inc., a training center run by the National Federation of the Blind in Minneapolis. He noted to me that, if I ever came to visit, I should come when one of the students was serving a meal for 40 people. That stopped me dead in my tracks. He explained that students at BLIND, Inc., as a type of capstone project for the home management class, would cook and serve a multi-course meal for 40 people. Until that point, my experiences at training centers were about being fed by others, not preparing food for others. It was a completely different way of thinking about training, as well as thinking about blindness. I could not have articulated this at the time, but what I was realizing was that we were not only the passive recipients of the generosity of others; we could be the producers and contributors who could influence the world around us in everyday ways like serving food to a large group. Jim Omvig famously called this “giving back.” It is a necessary part of being a first-class member of society. As the years have passed since that seminar, I cannot remember how many seminars I have attended. Some have been single-state, and others have been multi-state. It has been an honor to bear witness to the transformative experiences in many blind students’ lives across the country. When we bring blind people together, the magic is automatic. We need to have a strong connection to our national movement to help students feel that connection at the individual level. Sometimes, the primary role of a seminar in a student’s life is the opportunity to be around other blind students. If I did not have that already, it could be that for me. There have been times, even within the past month, where I have been down about something and needed to talk to a friend who would understand. A half hour spent talking to a fellow NABS board member did not necessarily create a solution, but it did help me truly understand that I was not alone. Sometimes, that makes all the difference in the world. Other times, this can be helpful because then it allows us to explore other parts of our identities because we are no longer finding our identities consumed with the blindness part of it. When we are around other blind people, then I can be the American Indian and Ashkenazi Jew. Then, I can be the guy who ran scored points in a conference championship track meet in high school. Then, I can be the guy who pledged a fraternity. I want the opportunity to celebrate those other parts of who I am, and being around other blind people helps me do that. The skills that are useful in planning a state convention are similar to planning a student seminar. We still need a venue, food, attendees, advertising, sponsorships and other forms of revenue, an agenda, and the list continues. Years later, when I had the privilege of planning a state convention with my state president there to mentor me, I was already familiar with every part of what I needed to do. When I head into a student seminar, I don’t know what every student will gain from it. I try to make sure it is as multi-dimensional as possible so that students can gain from it in every possible way. The list is literally infinite. Some students need to learn about resources, some need to make friends, some need to learn a skill, and some need to learn about what is possible for blind people. Every time we do student seminars, we get better at them. We know more about how to help empower blind people. I no longer think about our velocity as a movement; I think about our acceleration. It is not our job to maintain velocity; it is our job to maintain acceleration. In the future, someone will likely say that we must maintain the next derivative, which mathematicians call the “jerk.” A student seminar is a microcosm of the magic that is the National Federation of the Blind. Every seminar is an opportunity for students to learn and grow, whatever their current level. Every task that must be executed is training for us to put together other programs within the Federation. Every situation is a learning opportunity. I encourage all students to make every effort to attend student seminars and discover what magic will happen for you. I updated to iOS 13 from iOS 12 on my iPhone 8. I'm experiencing some VoiceOver issues which, although I can mostly work around them, would have made me reconsider updating, so I would highly recommend, for these of you who haven't yet updated, not to do so. First, you can no longer read PDF files on the Apple Books app. I used to love doing this because it allowed me to navigate files easily, search for page numbers, and only show one page at a time. The phone will just freeze at the text. (Note that books from the Apple store will still work). I'm fortunate to have a Braillenote which will allow me to access the relatively large textbook I need, but I would still, in hindsight, not have updated yet. The second thing (although this is much more minor) is that you can't log in to Amazon any longer with the iPhone. The password field goes blank after you type it in, so that the only two ways to log in would be with a computer or with sighted assistance. I just thought I'd let you all know. Message-ID: <3A22C085-D249-4A5B-B94D-B0F9C724FB1B@gmail.com> Hi all! I know I don’t post very often in less I run into something major. I ran into something major today for my environmental science class. I wasn’t effected during the first class period itself. When I met up with my science teacher after class during my lunch break, some questions came up that I had some idea on how to answer but was missing critical information. How do I go about making graphs in an environmental science class? According to my science teacher, he informed me that I have to actually turn scientific data and promptly turn it intto a graph. Since I’m blind, there are some major accessability problems around any graph items that come up in any form. I told him to use tables instead of graphs when sending me information electronically. But it still doesn’t answer the question of how to make them. I’m not just talking about the graphs that most see in math classes. I’m talking about things like bar graphs, pie graphs, exponential graphs and simular. How do you all navigate this problem? Also, the other query came up with scientific equipment. One example is microscopes. I said that my in class assistant might be able to look into one for me and give me the information that’s acquired only via looking through a microscope. There might be other tools that I don’t know about, however, it still leaves yet another accessability gap with us blind science students. So, how do I navigate scientific measuring and data colecting instruments? Do I only use my in class aid or will I have to acquire additional tools? Can I use an in class assistant until I can get such tools? The earlier I know this information, the better off I’ll be. Thank you!!! The way this works is you define the elements you wish to navigate to such as highlighted text, bold, underline, text with different background/foreground colours with the tool and it then allows you to jump to the specific text attributes that you specified. It also supports navigation by the first line/sentence of each paragraph. This works in web and MS Word documents. See https://support.freedomscientific.com/Training/Surfs-Up/Skim_Reading.htm for more info. Besides increasing the speech rate, I personally have not found an effective way to skim or speed read, especially if the material is a textbook. You can of course find certain words or phrases or navigate by headings, but other than that, I have found that skimming just isn't an option when using audio formats. I hope someone else has found a solution. __ Have a great Tuesday! Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed Hi Jonathon, There's a way to do this with JAWS by using the skim reading tool. All three centers will do the same thing as far as teaching you the skills you need through structured discovery training. All of us apparently have pulled you in all three directions, but in the end it is your choice as to which center you would like to go to depending on whether you want to train in a big city or a small town. But where ever you go, the skills are transferable back to where ever you have lived or are planning to live. This year, I’m taking Writing 121 which is one of the uper average writing courses in my community college. As part of the class, we are suposed to use Gramarly as a tool. I have not experienced it being very accessible on the mobile platform. Does anyone know if it’s just me or is it inaccessible across the board? Also, does anyone know if it’s inaccessible on a laptop vertion? On my phone, I use an iphone SE with Voice Over and the last vertion of IOS 12. On my laptop computer, I use a Dell laptop with Windows 10, the home vertion. I also use both JAWS and NVDA. So far, I have not been impressed with the mobile vertion because I found several key buttons to be inaccessible. I could see the button but not get it to work. Other buttons were both unworkable and were not labeled. Has anyone else gotten this? Also, has anyone had any luck with avoiding the same problems on their laptop computers? Also, does anyone know of a good accessable spell checker for an iphone? I have not found one so far. The feature I’m talking about that a lot of people are raving about because it’s so useful is the fact that when you go to the end of the display, it detects that your fingers are at the end and it automatically advances and it does it at the speed that you read, it self adjusts. I've spoken to the professor and the disability resource center, and essentially right now, the thought process is to use models when they are available and tactile diagrams when they are not. My only issue is that, when using models in the lab, it doesn't give me much material to be able to study. Also, for those who used tactile diagrams, who was responsible for creating them? I would think it would be the lab assistant/reader I have for this course. Thanks for your help. Let me start this by saying that I have been through physiology as well as human anatomy and a comparative anatomy class complete with dissection. Tactile diagrams can be very helpful, but another thing that I found to be a good learning aid is to get some model magic and either make your own models or have someone make them for you. You can take them home with you and use them to study. As far as the diagrams go, you can have someone draw for you on swellpaper and then put it through a machine like the picture in a flash. This is definitely not your only option, but it is what I used and found it to be the most effective. It also depends on how many diagrams the professor uses and how many of them can be better represented for you with a handmade model or with a model that is already in the biology department. Please feel free to call me.
