[NABS-L] Training Centers

Greetings:
I went to the Louisiana Center for the Blind and earned an awesome skill set
that I have been using throughout college. I think what you might want to do
before having your mind set on one center is to talk to all three directors
of the training centers. This way you can see if one has more of what you
are looking for than the other. They are all good and the staff I know will
be more than willing to answer any questions.
I hope everything goes well for you.
Best,
Mary Church

Hello All,

I have a question about reading: is there any way to ?speed read? an
audiobook other than making the reading speed faster? I know sighted
individuals can scan paragraphs, look for highlighted words, speed read,
etc. Is there any way to get through an audiobook or other file and still
retain the important information?

Best,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathon.
Besides increasing the speech rate, I personally have not found an
effective way to skim or speed read, especially if the material is a
textbook. You can of course find certain words or phrases or navigate by
headings, but other than that, I have found that skimming just isn't an
option when using audio formats.
I hope someone else has found a solution. __
	Have a great Tuesday!

Hi Jonathon,

There's a way to do this with JAWS by using the skim reading tool. The way
this works is you define the elements you wish to navigate to such as
highlighted text, bold, underline, text with different background/foreground
colours with the tool and it then allows you to jump to the specific text
attributes that you specified. It also supports navigation by the first
line/sentence of each paragraph. This works in web and MS Word documents.

See

https://support.freedomscientific.com/Training/Surfs-Up/Skim_Reading.htm

for more info.

Best,

Ka

Hello,
I?m a student in California and I am looking to go to a residential
independent living skills program because I need better blindness skills
before I can really do well in college. I know that in california there are
Hatlen and The orientation Center for the blind, but I have heard really
great things about the colorado center for the blind and from what I know it
seems like the best option. I?m wondering what others experiences are and if
anyone has any advice to help DOR send me to the right place.
Thanks for any information.

If you are open to traveling for your internship open up your search to
facilities outside of that area.

I would highly recommend the Louisiana Center for the Blind. That is where I
got my training from, and I have to say that attending The Louisiana Center
for the Blind changed my life! All of the staff are truly dedicated to
changing what it means to be blind.

Hi!
I graduated from the Colorado Center for the blind about a year ago. If you
have any questions about what it was like for me at the center, please feel
free to ask either here or directly. If I don?t have an answer for you, I
can direct you to someone who will.

Best,

Hi, I went to the Louisiana Center for the summer program, in 2012, and the
adult program I did at BLIND Inc in 2014. All three centers will do the same
thing as far as teaching you the skills you need through structured
discovery training. All of us apparently have pulled you in all three
directions, but in the end it is your choice as to which center you would
like to go to depending on whether you want to train in a big city or a
small town. But where ever you go, the skills are transferable back to where
ever you have lived or are planning to live.
