I usually listen to audio books from bard or audible, but described movies are also fun. Also, guys, don't forget about bookshare as well. Since I'm not in college at the moment, I recently renewed my bookshare membership for $50 and now I have access to bookshare's massive collection of ebooks. Again, voice dream reader comes through. I can add bookshare books to voice dream reader and listen to them using any enhanced apple voice, or purchase various acapela, Ivona, or Neospeech voices. The app is also very easy to use. NABS 2020 Walk-A-Thon Link is Live! Message-ID: Hey everyone! The National Association of Blind Students is proud to announce our 4th annual NABS Walk-A-Thon! If you support blind students, believe in the future of blind students, or benefit from our organization, please register by visiting: https://go.rallyup.com/nabs2020 This fun and easy effort will focus on raising funds for our organization, which provides many resources for blind students, including mentorship, guidance on success in high school and higher education, sponsoring attendance at leadership seminars, sending national student leaders to events to empower our youth, and so much more. What are we asking of you? Please join us by participating in this initiative, just involving walking…something that is routine to most of us! Each day, our leaders and members are motivated to do more, jump higher, and reach for the stars to pave the path for future blind students. Come along for this journey, whether attending 2020 National Convention or not. See below for details about the event, and contact Kyle Garcia with any questions (mailto:kgarcia2432 at gmail.com). When: Thursday, July 16, 2020 from 12:00AM - 11:00PM Central Standard Time. You can participate anywhere in the world, as long as you are willing to review your steps at the beginning and end of the day. How: Participating is as simple as looking at your iPhone Health app or downloading an app that records steps and convert them into miles walked. How do you raise pledges? Once signed up by visiting https://go.rallyup.com/nabs2020 you will be asked to share your page to social media. This post will inform your friends and family about what you plan to do on July 16 and why you are doing it. When seeking donations, we encourage pledges of around 5 (five)-10 (ten) dollars per mile, but, of course, any sponsorships/donations are encouraged and appreciated. Social media is the outlet to success, so share widely and often! The best part is that we are not asking you to change your day up or, if at convention, miss the fun that National Convention provides. Your role is as simple as sign up, share your page, and then walk! Oh, and did we mention that the person who raises the most money wins a CASH prize?!?! Don’t pass up this exciting and fun opportunity. Register today and show us all your competitive side. Thank you so much in advance…let’s go walk! Let's Go Shopping! Attend this online event that brings together small businesses and the customers who need them. Henderson, NV - Laura Legendary, owner of Elegant Insights Braille Creations, has organized an all-day, online accessible experience for seniors and consumers with disabilities called "Let's Go Shopping!" On Saturday, April 4th, from 7 AM PT to 7 PM PT, shoppers will be able to call or connect to the Zoom platform to shop for gifts for Easter, Passover, Mother's Day, graduations, or any upcoming gift-giving occasion. With millions of people in self-isolation, getting out to shop is all but impossible for those with limited mobility. People with disabilities, seniors, and those in rural areas with limited bandwidth or lack of access to help from their children, in-home health care provider, or personal assistant may find navigating web sites to go shopping online difficult. "People with print or cognitive disabilities who would normally have access to assistive technology through their workplace, or a care worker who they rely on to accomplish shopping tasks may now find themselves cut off, thanks to the need to remain at home. As a result, they may find online shopping to be cognitively burdensome," says Legendary. "My goal with the Let's Go Shopping event was two-fold: Not only to give micro businesses a boost, but to bring a virtual shopping mall to customers," says Legendary, who is blind. "Besides, we could all use a little retail therapy about now." Attendees will access the live online mall using the Zoom Video Conferencing platform. Zoom has been a lifesaver for students and parents who need to connect with teachers and colleagues. Zoom enables users to sign in using a desktop, laptop, smartphone app, or even their landline telephone. Brent Harbolt, of The Harbolt Company, one of the participating vendors, has donated the Zoom room for the event. "Let's Go Shopping is an opportunity for me to reach new customers who are looking for gadgets to make their life a little easier, provide product descriptions, and directly answer people's questions in real time," says Harbolt. All of the small business owners participating in the "Let's Go Shopping" event have a disability. Vendors include A T Guys, Patti and Ricky, GuideLights and Gadgets Inc., Elegant Insights Braille Creations, Hartgen Consultancy, and more. Shoppers will be able to purchase artisan crafted dolls, home fragrance and beauty products, independent living aids, adaptive apparel and accessories, ceramics, and braille jewelry. Elegant Insights Braille Creations is a distinctive, handcrafted collection of jewelry and accessories, made in the USA, and embossed in braille. Founded in 2011 by Laura Legendary, Elegant Insights jewelry is meaningful, unusual, accessible, and inclusive. We bring out the beauty of braille. There are a number of options available for those who are skilled with technology, such as online delivery from Smiths or Sprouts, or using apps such as Instacart or Postmates. However, not everyone is comfortable using such technology. One long-time Federation member today alerted me to another option, specifically GoGoGroceries. > > > > GoGoGroceries is available from GoGoGrandparent, the ride sharing service that connects riders with Uber and Lyft through a regular telephone. While GoGoGroceries is more expensive, it is an option for those who are unable to order online or through a smartphone. You also do not need to be a grandparent. Tonia and I have signed up for GoGoGrandparent just in case our smartphones were ever forgotten, lost, or stolen. Due to our current situation, all of my classes have moved online with daily assignments. As I begin using my computer more and more I am realizing that I should probably be using a magnification software or screen reader to make it easier to access and not have to bend over and look so closely. I am aware that Freedom Scientific is providing home licenses for their three Softwares. I am wondering if anyone has recommendations on any of these Softwares for a low vision user? I have some experience with ZoomText, but was wondering if anyone had insight on Fusion if it was better or worse for a low vision user or if anyone had good resources on how to best use either of these Softwares. I have shied away from them because I haven't been able to figure out how to use them fluidly to benefit me in the classroom. If you need any tips or have questions about braille, feel free to write to me. My email address is plangkau4 at gmail.com  Besides the Hadley School for the Blind, another resource that you can try is Braille Bug from the American Foundation for the Blind or AFB. Besides learning about the braille alphabet, there are also interactive games on the site that teach you how to spell words and write numbers in braille. As you play the games, there is a braille alphabet chart at the bottom of each game page that give you dot combinations for letters, numbers, and so on in case you need to refer to a cheat sheet. In these kinds of games, that's perfectly okay to do. A cool thing I like about it is that whenever you submit your game answer, Braille Bug will tell you by audio whether or not you got the answer right. If you get an answer right, you move on to the next question or level. If not, she tells you to try again. Let me know if you want more information or tips. I hope you find this suggestion useful. If it’s one of the major display manufacturers you can go to their website and download the drivers depending on what operating system you have, Windows, Mac, or Linux. The methods of pairing your display to the computer will also vary by which version of Windows you are using. And what the software to your display will allow. Finally, what screen meeting program are you using? Is it JAWS for Windows, or is it Nvda, or is it a program not being mentioned here. Based on your answers we can figure out how best to give you suggestions on the way forward. While we won’t be in-person together this year, it gives us that much more of a reach in bringing as many blind students to our virtual events this summer than ever before. Our national student leadership stands by our national leadership in recognizing this is the safest course of action for the health and security of our members and non-members alike. It also gives us a unique opportunity to spread the love of our organization to new heights, stripping financial implications and other barriers of in-person attendance. Rest assured, NABS leadership is actively planning how we can make these virtual opportunities as interactive, fun, engaging, and energizing as our in-person festivities! So much more information to come, but do reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas on how we can make the NABS 2020 components of our national convention as invigorating as always! Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. But this time Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and thereby achieves a measure of vindication. > In Laurie Halse Anderson's powerful novel, an utterly believable heroine with a bitterly ironic voice delivers a blow to the hypocritical world of high school. Their refugee story inspired her to embark on a quest for knowledge, traveling the world in search of the secret to belonging. She explored numerous fascinating places, including Mali, where she helped build a school under the scorching Saharan sun. Her many adventures over the years range from the hair-raising to the hilarious. > Haben defines disability as an opportunity for innovation. Haben pioneered her way through obstacles, graduated from Harvard Law, and now uses her talents to advocate for people with disabilities. > HABEN takes readers through a thrilling game of blind hide-and-seek in Louisiana, a treacherous climb up an iceberg in Alaska, and a magical moment with President Obama at The White House. Warm, funny, thoughtful, and uplifting, this captivating memoir is a testament to one woman's determination to find the keys to connection. > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > NABS-L mailing list > NABS-L at nfbnet.org > http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nabs-l_nfbnet.org > To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for NABS-L: > http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nabs-l_nfbnet.org/johnawright98%40gm > ail.com _______________________________________________ NABS-L mailing list NABS-L at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nabs-l_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for NABS-L: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nabs-l_nfbnet.org/cory.j.mcmahon%40gmail.com From mausam.mehta.nfb at gmail.com Mon Apr 13 01:05:04 2020 From: mausam.mehta.nfb at gmail.com (Mausam Mehta) Date: Sun, 12 Apr 2020 21:05:04 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Legislative and Self-Advocacy Call, next Sunday at 8 PM Eastern Message-ID: Hey students,The legislative and self-advocacy committee invites you to our monthly call, next Sunday at 8 PM Eastern! Unfortunately, my college is firmly entrenched in the Google universe, so at times I also have to use Google Meet and do the best I can with what I have. >From my experience, your best bet is to download the Google Meet app on your iPhone. When you get the invitation, there will be a direct link you can click on which will open the app and take you into the meeting. Note that the app has a bug which causes VoiceOver to talk through the earpiece rather than the speaker, so you have to put the phone to your ear to hear it. From the screen you land on when you click on the direct link, you have to double tap on "join meeting," at which point you will be in. As you might imagine, the easiest way to get into a meeting is to open the email on your phone. Otherwise, you will have to write down the meeting ID and enter it manually into the app. To answer your second question, there is a way to dial in on the phone as you would with a traditional conference call. The phone number and meeting pin will also be in the invitation you get, so you will have to write down that information and dial it in. Unfortunately, Google Meet doesn't have the "one-tap mobile" option that Zoom has--one of the many advantages Zoom has over Google Meet. I hope this helps you get started. Stay safe! And I have very little experience using any of the Google applications. I recently received an email from someone who wants to send me a google hangout calendar invite to talk with me. However, I am not quite sure what this process looks like or how accessible or user friendly this might be for me. So can anyone help explain how Google Hangouts or Google Meetings work so I can participate in my conversation with this person? Is this a platform similar to Zoon where you can simply dial into a meeting with a phone? Or is it better to use an app on my iphone or computer? Any information would be greatly appreciated. The notes must be very brief because the interpretation is consecutive and quick. Voiceover cannot be overheard on the phone because that's unprofessional, and I cannot type quickly enough and then go back over the sentence so that my computer would read the note for me to remember the smaller details and then make the interpretation. The company wants me because I am perfectly fluent in both languages that they need, so they are hanging on to me. I've already failed one assessment because of this issue. First, if you are not already using a headset for the phone, then I would suggest using one. This would allow you to use the computer more freely as you are typing. Second, there should be options as to how the computer announces things as you type them. In JAWS you can select an option that allows you to hear the characters, words, character and words, or none as you are typing on the computer. Perhaps you can adjust these options to see what works best for your situation. Finally, practice typing things as you are listening to them in real time. There are countless things you can find online. Or something as simple an audio book could work. I would suggest starting with something that is familiar to you and then progressing to something similar to what you would be doing for the job. Lerning new skills and adopting to change can sometimes be challenging. But a little hard work, creative problem solving, and practicing a new skill are all things that can be done in any situation. I hope you can find a strategy for success that works for you. To start off, I'm very pleased to see what the Student division has done. I've noticed your Nabs Now podcast, and I appreciate how you've done an excellent job of speaking to college students and young professionals. While I'm no longer a student, I appreciate those of you who are producing the podcast. Most students today are likely to use You Tube or a podcast to find answers to their questions, and you've raised questions that students need to address. Your last podcast on STEM really is an encouragement to any college student dealing with math and science, and your tips on dressing professionally could benefit anyone. So here's what's bothering me. Some years back, there was an attempt to write an issue of our Parents division magazine aimed directly at elementary, middle and high school students. I didn't discover it until later, and while I thought it did a good job,it was a one-time thing. Since that issue, times have changed, which leads me to wonder if it's time to revisit this idea. While most of you are college students, I'd hate for elementary to high school students to be left out. I also recognize that many children's titles that deal with blindness are a mixed bag. Most have some good points, but since they're fiction, it's easy for the old stereotypes to sneak in. Plus, with the advent of new technology, some can date quickly. The only children's book I've seen that doesn't give in to the old stereotypes is Running with Roszel, written by Michael Hingson and a co-author. Some dialog is fictionalized, but the story at its core is on target when it comes to blineness. That book is the exception when it comes to children's books. I still enjoy our kernel books and anything our organization puts out, and I believe parents and kids can, and do, read them. But I'm also troubled by a trend I sometimes see in other fields: the need to write literature that is directly aimed at kids, or that makes heavy adult content "kid friendly," by trying to adapt adult concepts and explain them in ways kids can understand. I'm not talking about sexual content here, but just concepts that can be explained to an adult audience, but may be a challenge to explain to a younger audience unless the writer can do it in ways kids can relate to. But I have mixed feelings about this, since I know that if you deliberately aim low, kids won't be challenged, but you also don't want to go over the heads of a young audience. My research shows that any author who writes something "just for kids," with no adult interest, fails. I also recognize that kids need to hear how their peers are helping each other to believe in our message and apply it. Not long ago, I happened on The Dream Big podcast at www.dreambigpodcast.com The young host started this show because her parents often shared motivational podcasts while the family commuted to and from school. She was concerned that while the messages were OK, the hosts were targeting adults, not children. She asked her parents if there were any podcasts on personal growth and self development that were targeted for kids, but they found nothing. She started her own, and it's been going strong since October of 2016. While her main audience is children, adults, too, enjoy it. I believe she has it right, since the host challenges both children and adults to dream big. So here's my burning question. Is it time for our organization to model what this young host did: create media targeted to a young audience, but that can also be enjoyed by adults? I realize this can be a challenge, but I also realize that our philosophy needs to be presented by fresh voices. I like the idea of podcasts and/or You Tube videos because most young people might view or listen to a video or podcast, but depending on their age, they might or might not read an article. I also recognize that this can complement and re-inforce what students learn at our BELL Academies or at our programs that teach science nonvisually. I also view them as one additional tool to reach our young people, and as a complement to our other publications and direct mentoring. So is there really a need in our organization for such targeted media for a younger audience? Is there really a gap here? If there is, how can we start to fill it? If not, is there something going on that I don't know about that may already be filling this gap? I may be totally off base here, but that's OK. Any thoughts? Thanks. I joined this list about a month ago on the recommendation of a friend/mentor, and am wondering about how I can get more information about NABS and get more involved. Besides a brief exposure several years ago, I haven't done anything NFB or NABS related, and don't know a ton about either.   Also, I am wondering if there are any current or former college students on this list who are majoring or have majored in  music performance. I am a serious violinist and I intend to study in college, but I have a lot of questions about how best to do this as a blind individual, and would love to get in contact with someone who has already gone down this road. Thank you so much, Julia LaGrand From cnusbaumnfb at gmail.com Thu Apr 30 17:38:19 2020 From: cnusbaumnfb at gmail.com (Chris Nusbaum) Date: Thu, 30 Apr 2020 13:38:19 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Getting Involved and Violin Performance In-Reply-To: <5eab079a.1c69fb81.2b6d4.18c4@mx.google.com> References: <5eab079a.1c69fb81.2b6d4.18c4@mx.google.com> Message-ID: <34BCD1BA-E354-4E86-9A33-6B76A6BE1EA1@gmail.com> Hi Julia: Welcome to the NABS list! I'm so excited to hear that you want to learn more about the NFB and get involved with NABS. If you want to find a way to get involved in the student division, I would recommend contacting your state's student division president. I knew who the Michigan student division's president was while I was on the NABS Board, but I'm not sure if he still holds that office. If you go to www.nabslink.org, you can find contact information for your student division president as well as your state affiliate president, either of whom can get you connected and help you find a place to get involved. I'm also very excited to see another fellow musician on this list! We have plenty of musicians in the Federation, some of whom have studied music in college. I'm a music minor, but my emphasis is in vocal performance, so that might not help you much as a violinist. However, Leslie Hamric, a Board member of our Performing Arts Division, is a professional cellist and violinist who studied at the Eastman School of Music in Illinois. She also teaches private lessons remotely, so she would probably be a great person for you to contact. Please email me off-list at cnusbaumnfb at gmail.com if you are interested, and I'll connect the two of you. I would also suggest checking out our Performing Arts Division and joining the Perform-talk and/or Music Talk lists, both of which can be found at nfbnet.org. I hope these resources help you. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions or if there is anything I can do to help. Again, welcome to the Federation!
