[NABS-L] NABS Officers Standpoint

Dear all,
First, I am only speaking on behalf of myself. There have been
comments on this thread that working with the NFB, or applying for
scholarships with the NFB, are synonymous with condoning sexual
misconduct and the practices (or lack thereof) surrounding it. I would
like to say that supporting and belonging to a group, while
disagreeing with some of that group's practices or beliefs, is totally
fine. Support does not mean complete allegiance. I firmly stand with
the goals and missions of the NFB, but I do not endorse some
practices. When it comes to scholarships, there is no doubt that the
NFB has one of the most prestigious scholarship programs out there for
blind students attending American institutions. There is no way around
the fact that higher education is very expensive, and some people need
money to help get through it. As a low-income student, I know what
this feels like. As blind students who have some expenses that sighted
peers do not incur, a lot of us should know what this feels like. If
you still really feel that applying for a scholarship through NFB
means supporting an organization that you feel is unethical, then
think of it this way: you have the opportunity to take this money, and
to do some of the good that you feel the NFB is not doing.
Additionally, I have been feeling an overall lack of compassion. I am
a leader of part of this organization, and I am also a sexual
misconduct survivor several times over. As a leader, I am sometimes
expected to provide guidance for complicated issues, which I am
sometimes sorting through simultaneously. Reading these testimonials
has been re-traumatizing, so I'm trying to stay healthy. But there is
antagonism from some, both in thread and in other places. I urge
people to have patience as we walk through this together. I hope
everyone understands the mass hurt and frustration that are going
around. If people are feeling a lack of compassion from leaders, then
exhibiting a lack of the same compassion is not demonstrating what you
want to see. At the same time, being accusational, not believing
survivors, being quick to name-calling, is counterproductive. This
kind of behavior promotes suppression-culture, and if people are
working toward ensuring that survivors feel comfortable expressing
themselves and telling their stories, this is not the way to do it.
Now that these testimonials have been made, the important thing is
moving forward. The dialogue has been opened, and while progress may
be slow, it should happen. Understand that no one knows what the
perfect thing to do is; if we did, there would be very little need for
dialogue. Leaders are trying to figure out what would be best in this
moment but given the prevalence of sexual misconduct, many of them are
likely survivors. Many of them are being re-traumatized too, and the
frustration is felt by everyone. What benefit does your commentary
have? Whether intended or not, will your comments promote
suppression-culture? Whether intended or not, will your comments
encourage income disparity? Could your comments alienate yourself from
a whole lot of people? Or, perhaps given some reframing, could your
comments promote positive changing while still expressing your
frustration?
Please remember that we are all imperfect, all frustrated, and all
human. Again, I speak only on behalf of myself and my feelings. Thank
you.
Best,
Cricket X. Bidleman (she/her/hers)
