Does anyone know where I can find print/braille versions of Mo Willems’ books? I am willing to buy the print copies and transcribe them myself but I would like to see if they are available anywhere first. We have been thrilled with the response our weekly events receive during quarantine. It has been so fun to connect with each of you week after week. For June, We decided to not hold our weekly programming, given the heard zoom fatigue voiced by our members, and we do not wish to overload you with programming. To that end, our affiliates and chapters continue to plan wonderful content, so I encourage you to get involved. Additionally, our NABS committees are always eager to welcome new members. Our work could not happen without you! Although our weekly programming will not be continuing, please know that our board is always available and eager to serve as a resource for you. We are looking forward to reuniting with our Federation family during national convention in July. Stay tuned regarding NABS programming! Our last meeting was a Game Night; we played a few rounds of “Trivia” and a couple of other rounds of “Heads Up”. Unsurprisingly, everyone who participated did a great job! We weren’t keeping score but the competitive juices were flowing for sure. This week, we will kick off our meeting with a bit of trivia relating to our topic, which is Pre-Employment Transition Services. Those of you who are currently working with rehabilitation services will likely know what “Pre-ETS” means. For those of you who are not completely sure, you will have to join us to find out what it means and how it applies to you. Now that it's June 1 and most schools are out, we also want to highlight the “Virtual Summer Sessions” that the Colorado Center for the Blind will be offering starting June 16, 2020. CCB will have 4 different workshops that will cover the following topics: Self-Advocacy; STEM; College Readiness; and Employment. The Self-Advocacy and STEM workshops will consist of two 90-minute sessions each. And the College Readiness and Employment workshops will consist of four 90-minute sessions each. I guess my math class from my previous college didn’t satisfy some requirement or other, because I have to take the math portion of the entrance exam again. This test is called the AcuPlacer, and it is through the college board. Has anyone tried to take this exam with any screenreader? It isn’t reading properly on my windows 10 system. I’ve tried Jaws, NVDA, and narrator, with FireFox and the latest chromium based Microsoft Edge. It just reads blank spaces where the numbers should be. NVDA says clickable, but if I press enter or space, it says "math interaction not supported." I’ve made sure that my OS, screenreaders, and browsers are fully up-to-date. Is there anything else I can do to make this work? Thanks, Justin. The action, brought by the National Federation of the Blind and Duke MBA Mary Fernandez, alleges that Duke failed to ensure that blind students can interact with digital content and platforms and access course materials--including hard-copy Braille materials and hard-copy tactile graphics when requested and appropriate--on an equal basis with students without disabilities. According to the lawsuit, Plaintiff Mary Fernandez is a blind student who began the Duke Daytime MBA program in the fall of 2018. To read print, Ms. Fernandez uses screen access software, Job Access with Speech ("JAWS"), which vocalizes the text using synthesized speech or displays it on a connected device called a refreshable Braille display. For STEM subjects, Ms. Fernandez also uses hard-copy Braille and tactile graphics to better understand the complex concepts because refreshable Braille displays only display a single line of Braille cells at a time, and thus are not useful for complex equations, coordinate planes, diagrams, maps, and other graphics. Ms. Fernandez met with the Assistant Director of Student Life before she enrolled and was assured Duke would provide the accommodations she needed to have equal access to her education. From the start, however, Ms. Fernandez experienced barriers that permeated every aspect of her educational experience. When she applied for admission, she encountered an inaccessible web-based application. When she registered online for courses, she could not access the course descriptions. When she utilized the employer recruiting system, she could not set up her user profile and could not utilize any of the search functions. In addition, Duke failed to provide Ms. Fernandez with timely access to accessible course materials, including hard-copy Braille and tactile graphics when she requested them. As a result, Ms. Fernandez was continually forced to divert her time and attention away from her studies to advocate for equal access to her education. "Blind students must have access to course materials in accessible formats including Braille, along with equal access to digital platforms and content, at the same time as sighted students in order to have an equal opportunity to succeed," said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. "This is not a new issue; it has been a focus of our advocacy for nearly two decades, and institutions of higher education have no excuse for not meeting this legal and moral obligation. The blind cannot and will not tolerate discrimination of this kind." "The failure to provide blind students with timely, accessible course materials and career services not only harms their educational experience, it puts their future career and economic self-sufficiency at risk," said Virginia Knowlton Marcus, chief executive officer of Disability Rights North Carolina. "Duke University, in particular, has previously been sued by Disability Rights NC regarding the inaccessibility of its course materials and has the responsibility to know better and do better." "I expected an institution with Duke's high standards and reputation to be able to meet my needs as a blind student and was assured that would happen," said Ms. Fernandez. "Instead, my time at Duke has been something of a nightmare. I hope the action I am now taking will improve things for future blind students who want to attend Duke." The plaintiffs are represented by the attorneys of Disability Rights NC and the law firm of Brown Goldstein Levy LLP [2]. ### ABOUT THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), headquartered in Baltimore, is the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind Americans. The ruling resolves a request for a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit [2] filed by the National Federation of the Blind of New York and a coalition, including: Disability Rights New York; American Council of the Blind--New York, Inc.; Center for Independence of the Disabled, New York; Disability Rights Advocates; and several New York voters with disabilities. Read the full official press release [3] on our website. Blind voters will be able to request an accessible electronic absentee ballot through a page on the NYSBOE website [4] or through their local county board of elections. They must do so by June 16, 2020. The National Federation of the Blind of New York is also asking blind voters to provide feedback on the accessible absentee voting process. They can complete a survey by calling 716-222-3NFB (716-222-3632) or visiting www.nfbny.org [5]. The court's order is the third in a recent string of successes for the National Federation of the Blind to protect the rights of blind voters as states shift to absentee and mail-in ballots because of the coronavirus pandemic. Battles for accessible absentee voting in primary elections have also been won in Michigan [6] and Pennsylvania [7]. "We are pleased that an agreement has been reached swiftly regarding the June 23 primary," said Mike Robinson, president of the National Federation of the Blind of New York. "We hope to work productively with NYSBOE to identify a more permanent solution and that other jurisdictions across the country will take note of our efforts in the empire state." The lawsuit, which will continue in order to resolve the question of accessible absentee and mail-in ballot solutions for elections later this year, alleges violations of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The National Federation of the Blind of New York is represented by Eve Hill [8] of Brown Goldstein Levy LLP [9]. ### ABOUT THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), headquartered in Baltimore, is the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind Americans. I am a blind it student doing certificate iv networking from http://www.upskilled.edu.au. And have a assus vivo book x 540 uar laptop. Running windows 10 64 bit 2004 and jaws 2020 and also nvda 2020. Now. Need to do a online assessment. And a external firm called heropa, has a web tool. well does not load, or takes forever to load, is totally unuser friendly and not accessible. Unlabeled graphics, unlabeled buttons, menus buried within sub menus, etc, and no keyboard short cuts, and some of the labelled buttons, does nothing. So, do have a remote server given to me via heropa. For doing a assessment where I have to install windows as a virtual network or install it, configure it, add folders, add desktop shortu cuts, and desktop icons to the task bar, set up and configure a printer. So. The firm when I did login and have a free trial of jaws remote . they have windows server 2016 data centre, and maybe did ask my main trainer Charles lang-ashe, about maybe reserving a spare particion, then could do the assessment that way. If not, what accessible free online servers, or virtual machines or cloud are there. I know there's no e-mail verification for Microsoft azure. And when I did try to sign up as a student, last year, and tried the call back feature. Because I am on the nbn and have a home landline phone, says does not support voip phones. Don't have a mobile phone. So was able to sign up for amazon web services, seems accessible, but not able to create any virtual machines, when I selected windows server, said the operation could not be completed or not available. So, what other cloud services and also other online free accessible online remote servers. For blind people. Who cannot see and need to do this. Any ideas, or suggestions. Got till tuesday as this is a long weekend here in Australia. And so need some ideas. Thanks.. To commemorate these successes, the National Association of Blind Students decided to dedicate one of this month's blog posts to highlighting the accomplishments of two students that weathered the storm that is covid-19 to achieve success. The post, titled "Elevation within Uncertainty," chronicles the stories of Rachel Pavone, a blind college graduate from Michigan, as she details her acension from undergraduate studies to graduate school, despite the pandemic. The second testimonial is from Megan Hale, a first-year undergraduate student that was skilled in completing her first year of studies despite physical school closure. Simply click the provided link for their wonderful stories. NABS and the entire NFB community congratulates you both, ladies, on a job well done. Because of the virus, my college has switched the on campus classes to online, however we now have 2 online campuses. One is the traditional online campus with discussion questions, quizs etc. and the other one is the online version of the on-campus experience, using BlackBoard Collaborate for everything. I know there have been issues with their accessibility before, I was in Dallas during the 2010 convention for all that, however I was in highschool at the time and the college I’m in now never used Collaborate before this point. I had to go online this spring as well. I personally think Blackboard is pretty accessible overall. There are some features I don’t like. I find that embedded links and other visual information that gets linked to some of the courses to be totally inaccessible. The discussion board that’s on there is accessible to screen readers via being able to read the screen itself. On the other hand, it’s not fully accessible when you include user friendlyness, and work flow equality because it’s very clunky and doesn’t allow blind people to work it in an equivelant work flow when compared to sighted students who also use it too. There might be some technical tricks that are on there that I don’t know about, conciddering I’m middle of the road with my tech skills. But I think it takes longer for blind students than sighted students to work the discussion board, even when blindness related technique is taken into account. There are also websites, videos, documents and the like that are posted that are not accessible. Also, keep in mind that websites such as the one to your school’s library might have issues with accessibility or that post inaccessible content. Usually, I have run into both problems with my school’s library website. So, be sure to explore your whole school’s website and look out for all accessibility barriers including work flow issues that are caused by accessibility issues such as inaccessible buttons that allow for you to make the website function with your screen reader along with the ability to read posted materials and/or being able to perform all tasks in an equivelant manor to your fellow sighted class mates. My name is Jorge ALejandro Paez, from South Florida, and I”m currently finishing my Associate of Arts degree. Can anyone fill me in on the accessibility of the platform with VoiceOver? For example, I found that a lot of my school apps are more accessible with Android then they are with iOS. I also found out that a lot of things are more accessible when using platforms like the iPhone and iPad then they are on using the computer. And I guess when I say it more accessible, I just mean that things are easier to navigate. Sites such as FB for example, became unnnworkable in Safari but the IOS app improved tons, and that’s just one example of many. That’s why I always try stuff on both platforms to see which one works better, although the IOS environment is a pain to write a discussion post in. Sure I could get a bluetooth keyboard, but that’s not something I can afford at the moment so I use dictation which works but it’s just a pain for long posts. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission. Are you (or do you know) a blind or low-vision student whose school uses technology for teaching and learning? Is some of that technology hard or impossible for you to use due to accessibility barriers? Your story could help change educators’ and technologists’ ideas about accessible technology. Previous research has shown that blind people’s stories helped to change educators’ hearts and minds about accessible technology. Dr. Natalie Shaheen, Assistant Professor of special education at Illinois State University and former Director of Education for the National Federation of the Blind, is doing research to gather blind and low-vision students’ (age 13-22) stories about using accessible and inaccessible technology at school. Dr. Shaheen will share the results of the research with educators and technologists to, hopefully, begin to change some of the technology practices in education and increase disabled students’ access. However, On June 8, I was excited to learn we had received in the mail an unrestricted grant in the amount of $10,000 from the Leclerc Charity Fund located in West Union, South Carolina. This grant will help to offset the loss of substantial rental income we would have incurred during the month of June. Rocky Bottom is extremely fortunate to have received this wonderful grant at this time, and we are deeply appreciative of the Leclerc Charity Fund's generosity. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who registered for the 2020 NFB national convention which will be occurring July 14-18. Although we will not have the final numbers for registration until convention, I believe South Carolina will again finish in the top ten in attendance. Also, many thanks goes to those chapter presidents and others who worked very hard to provide assistance to members who were unable to register by themselves. We have an announcement from the President's note book regarding the national convention. "Vernon Humphrey, President of the National Association of Blind Veterans, is reaching out to all veterans that will be taking part in the national convention so they can participate in the annual Celebration of Freedom. Please contact him at mr_president at nabv.org or 706-329-7960 if you are, or you know of, a military veteran that will be participating in convention this year." Now that the deadline for registration of the NFB national convention has passed, it is time for all of us to begin registering for the NFB of SC virtual state convention which will be held August 21-22. Although this will be our first ever virtual state convention, I am confident this will be our best Convention to date! There will be no cost for registration. To register online for the 2020 NFB of SC state convention go to our website nfbofsc.org. If you need assistance with the online registration, call Steve and Shannon Cook (803) 254-0222 or David Houck at the Federation Center (803) 254-3777and they will be happy to assist you. Deadline for registration is July 31, 2020. If you do not register you will not be eligible for door prizes. Also, to be eligible to participate in the election of state officers and five board members, you must be registered for the convention and be a dues paying member of the NFB of SC. If you have not paid your $10 NFB of SC state dues, you can do so, as the deadline to submit dues is July 1. The 2020 NFB of SC state convention will include most of the elements our members expect, with some new variations. Division and Committee meetings will be held on Friday August 21, as well as the third quarter meeting of the NFB of SC Board of Directors. The Convention will be called to order Saturday morning, August 22, and will adjourn at the conclusion of the banquet Saturday evening. Further details regarding the NFB of SC state convention will be discussed in subsequent Positive Notes and will appear on our website, nfbofsc.org. So, please stay tune! The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want: blindness is not what holds you back. Keep up the great work as we still have approximately five weeks (July 31) to register our members. I believe if we work extremely hard, we have a wonderful opportunity to register 300 people making this convention one of the largest gatherings we have had in many years. Remember, there is no cost for registration. To register online for the 2020 NFB of SC state convention, go to our website nfbofsc.org. If you need assistance with the online registration, call Steve and Shannon Cook (803) 254-0222 or David Houck at the Federation Center (803) 254-3777. If you do not register you will not be eligible for door prizes. Also, to be eligible to participate in the election of state officers and five board members, you must be registered for the convention and a dues paying member of the NFB of SC. If you have not paid your $10 NFB of SC state dues, you can do so, as the deadline to submit dues is July 1, 2020. Between now and the beginning of August, I will be spending much of my time planning the program for the 2020 NFB of SC state convention. If you have any thoughts regarding program items for the agenda, please contact me at (803) 796-8662 or you can email me at Frankcoppel at att.net. We have an announcement from the President's Notebook June 22-26. "Although our building is still closed to the public, our NFB Independence Market is now accepting orders via telephone. Our helpful staff is ready to take orders for slates and stylists, cane tips, and cooking utensils. To place an order, call 410-659-9314 and press 3 for the Independence Market. Please take into consideration that we have been closed for a significant period of time due to COVID-19, and we would appreciate your patience as we work to provide quality customer service to every customer. By now, all of you should have received your $5 Fall Fundraiser tickets. During the next four months, I hope all of us will put a great deal of effort to sell these $5 Fall Fundraiser tickets as we need to continue to financially support our facilities at Rocky Bottom. The winning ticket drawn will yield $50 to the seller and $500 to the buyer or $550 if you bought your own ticket. The chapter selling the most tickets will receive $300 for its treasury! The drawing will take place on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Federation Center of the Blind. Finally, I hope all you Dads had a wonderful Father's Day this past Sunday. For Shelley and myself, it was great to have the entire Coppel clan with us Sunday afternoon as we have not seen some of our grandchildren for a couple of months due to the Covid-19 virus. The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. I hope your afternoon goes well. > > > > Maurice Mines, Board Member > National Federation of the Blind Deaf-Blind Division > Email: board4 at nfbdeaf-blind.org > Website: www.nfbdeaf-blind.org > Live the life you want. > The National Federation of the Blind Deaf-Blind Division, a proud division > of the National Federation of the Blind, is a community of members and > friends who believe in the hopes and dreams of the nation's blind. That being said your email was forwarded on to our national debt blind division secretary who is a current student. And our first Vice President who has a Masters degree. My comments are based on the experience of attempting to learn American Sign Language after losing pretty much all of my hearing except for maybe two or 3%. The FM system was purchased for me by the state that I lived in while attending the Helen Keller national Center for deaf and blind use and adults. Located in Sandpoint New York. It is a training center who so focus is to get deaf blind people started on working on their own lives and learning and using the skills of death blindness. Although Hknc does not share the positive philosophy of blindness that we in the national Federation of the blind have. They do very definitely teach one about how to live as a duck blind person. Let me know if there’s anything that the division can help you with in terms of obtaining what you need to further your graduate school work. I hope this helps? I’ve worked with lots of PDFs and I notice that unless it’s from an accessible source like Vital Source, it’s a hit or a miss as far as e-books. What was interesting is it’s the same thing with my scanner. I have an HP scanner printer and I’ve been using the scanner to scan things in and upload as needed for different things, and sometimes they were fillable pdfs in which I filled them out, printed them and scanned them back in to email, and I noticed it was fully accessible both times, when I filled it out and when I scanned it back in I could still read it. Yesterday though I downloaded a form, filled it out as a .doc and scanned it back in as a PDF and found it completely inaccessible. In other words the document was there and I used sighted help to make sure it went through fine but interestingly enough when I emailed it to myself I found the new PDF version of the form was inaccessible, and consisted of 2 pages that all said “image.” Anyone know what the difference is that determines whether a file is accessible or not? I got this off of someone asking to try and explain to their home owner’s association what the difference was between the 2 types and I thought that would be applicable to students as well so I was wondering if anyone knew what the actual answer was. I’ll be attending LCB soon and like Lakeria said, if you call Pam, she will be more then happy to help and talk with you VR agency. She may also know who you can contact in the Florida affiliate to help you with this case. You also want to have a justification letter on why you want to attend an NFB training center. What skills you like obtain and why the Florida training center is not a good fit for you. For example, I’m from Maryland and they have a state training center here which I attend for three months during the summer a few years ago. It wasn’t horrible but I’ve lived in Maryland my whole life and it’s a comfort zone for me and I wanted to go somewhere that would really challenge me. You also want to make sure that it when you finish your letter that it goes back to you employment goal that’s in your IPE. If LCB is not where you are planning on going, I’m sure that CCB and Blind Inc directors will be happy to help you navigate your justification letter. Lastly, fill out an application anyways where you want to go so they know you are interested. Wishing you the best in this journey. It’s tough but you’ll get through it! It will be an incredibly worthwhile investment in yourself and in your future. I am currently a student at the Louisiana Center for the Blind, and I would be more than happy to help you navigate the process. I am not from Florida, but the process is generally the same. I strongly suggest you do as much research as you can prior to beginning the process because you will more than likely encounter pushback from your rehab agency at some point. Typically, you will express to your vocational rehabilitation counselor that you desire to attend a training center. As you mentioned, they typically recommend you attend the center in your state. Similarly, to you, I did not believe the training center in my state was going to provide me with the training I desired. Your counselor will ask you to write a justification letter which will describe your reasons and motivations for pursuing training. Most counselors have specific questions they wish for you to answer, so make sure you ask exactly what he or she is looking for in the letter. Just as an example, I was adamant I wanted to attend a structured discovery center, so that was a significant part of my letter. Additionally, your counselor will want to understand how training ties into your employment/career goals, so you will want to make sure you are able to articulate that. You mentioned lack of training is contributing to your "poor" academic performance, so you could use that as an example in which training will benefit you. Once you submit the letter, your counselor and his or her supervisor typically staff your case. They often have follow-up questions, so don’t be alarmed if that happens. I made sure to communicate any developments with Pam Allen, the Executive Director at LCB in the event I needed any advice. It’s difficult to say what happens next because each counselor and client are different, but my best advice is to remain persistent throughout the process. Make sure you follow-up with your counselor/rehab agency frequently. While you are working with your counselor, you will also want to talk to the executive director or admissions coordinator at the training center you desire to attend. They will give you an overview of the process and will serve as a resource for you as your request goes through your rehab agency. You will be asked to complete a short application on their website which expresses your desire to attend their center. I hope this was of some help to you. If you or anyone on this list have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out off list. Best, Kenia Kenia A.
