As a new committee, we will need all the support we can get to accomplish our goals. There are a variety of opportunities for members. Among other tasks, this can involve creative and artistic contributions, leadership opportunities, and writing samples. The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will meet on the first Sunday of every month at 7:00 pm EST, with the exception of this month, when we will meet on the second Sunday, March 8th. Please bring your ideas and enthusiasm for the committee. We will brainstorm ideas for the committee today. Please join the call using the following Zoom information: ID- 16468769923, pin- 6143070858#. Before our first meeting, here's a bit about the chair and co-chair of the committee: "My name is Rilee Sloan. I serve as the chair of the NABS Diversity and Inclusion Committee. I am a sophomore history and political science major at Oklahoma City University. One fun fact about me is that I’ve never gotten a brain freeze. To me, diversity and inclusion means empowering people by respecting and appreciating everyone’s differences. Diversity and inclusion enables people to explore their differences and their identities in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment." "Hey, y'all! I'm Johna Wright, and I'm very excited to serve as the co-chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. While you all may know me as the woman behind social media, I am looking forward to expanding my role and tackling topics that I am passionate about alongside you all. I'm a senior psychology major at Mercer University, but I'm currently studying abroad at the University of Essex in Colchester, England. A fun fact about me is that I can say and spell the longest town name in Wales, which is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Personally, diversity and inclusion means that we create a safe place where differences are appreciated and respected by all, and everyone is comfortable expressing their unique intersectionalities around others." One last thing: in order for our committee to understand and respond to your needs within the organization, we have generated a quick survey. We would greatly appreciate it if you could take approximately five minutes to fill it out. Don't worry; everything is completely anonymous unless you choose to leave us your info! However, on how to handle an online class, I have been taking classes online for a long time. My one piece of must do advice is time management and discipline. It’s a great idea to get all the lessons for each week and plan when you are going to complete them. Once you have a plan, stick to it. Its so easy to fall into the trap that you have all day and night to do homework and the like, then all of a sudden, the due date is looming in a few hours. That's my advice. Hope you do well in all your classes! The Braille Monitor is a magazine that the Federation has published since 1957. We call it our flagship publication. In terms not so tied to the Navy, this means that it should be the lead publication of our organization, the one which all of us follow and contribute to in order to share what is going on in our Federation Family, the latest news about blindness-related activities, and the place we record the major milestones of the National Federation of the Blind's progress. For some time now, we have been seeing Federationists-new Federationists in particular, we believe-who don't seem to know about the Braille Monitor and who have not subscribed because of it. We have assembled a survey that will ask participants a number of things about the Monitor, including whether someone has offered to sign them up for it; whether they read it and why not if the answer is no; and what should change to make the Monitor more the kind of magazine they want to see as the flagship publication of our organization. The Braille Monitor reflects many of our traditions, but it also must evolve enough to clearly be relevant in this decade and those to come. Please help us by telling us what you want, what you need, and what you will read. Together we will keep making history, and the Braille Monitor will continue to tell our story about defining a problem, talking it through, and doing what it takes to see that it gets solved. Thank you for helping the publication that states boldly "We are the Blind Speaking for Ourselves." Complete the Survey Online: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BrailleMonitor You can also complete it over the phone by calling 667-888-2454 Lastly, you can submit it in hard copy by answering the questions found here: https://www.nfb.org/images/nfb/publications/bm/bm20/bm2003/bm200302.htm Mahalo for your mana'o (Thank you for your input), Justin Justin Mark Hideaki Salisbury he/him/his Board Member | National Association of Blind Students A proud division of the National Federation of the Blind (808) 797-8606 president at alumni.ecu.edu | www.nabslink.org From johnawright98 at gmail.com Mon Mar 9 02:48:27 2020 From: johnawright98 at gmail.com (Johna Wright) Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2020 02:48:27 +0000 Subject: [NABS-L] Action Needed: Important Legislative Update on AIM High In-Reply-To: <000001d5f5b8$91e8d340$b5ba79c0$@gmail.com> References: <000001d5f5b8$91e8d340$b5ba79c0$@gmail.com> Message-ID: <359E89FC-5E9E-4522-BE6B-3270A54F57E0@gmail.com> Hey Trisha and friends, Here’s the non-broken link. From my understanding, many products have specific labels that say what type of plastic they are, which determines if I can recycle it or not. Your recycling service should tell you what kinds of things can be recycled, usually clean glas and metal, sometimes clean paper and cardboard, and certain clean plastics. Sometimes the number of plastics don't matter, e.g. my recycling place takes all plastic bottles. Other than that, you can ask a sighted person to look at the numbers on things you use a lot, e.g. the type of yogurt you normally buy, your favorite kinds of bottled beverages etc. and remember whether those things are recyclable or not. ----- Original Message ----- From: Justin Heard via NABS-L Richard Dunnick 541-619-2617 Hello there, I was just wondering with all of the current concerns about this global pandemic, do you still think we will still have the NFB convention in July? ____________________________________________________________ Need technical assistance with your devices at home? Non-hosts cannot move themselves from one room to another. However there is a function to call for help, which notifies the host that such and such person is calling for help. Fyi, the testing of this feature was performed in January 2020. My work team ultimately decided not to use the breakout feature because if you are joining via the web client rather then you can't use this feature at all. Miso is right. The other thing is that it’s a bit confusing because in the breakout room, there’s a chat panel, with a default option to send messages to “everyone”. They mean only everyone in the breakout room. Also the first time you’re invited to a breakout room, you get an alert. Any subsequent times, you have to find the breakouts button, and there’s always only one option. Hope this helps! Best, CXB — Cricket X. Find the link and text below! http://nabslink.org/content/blog-post-march-2020-home-stretch-kind-%E2%80%A6-robert-parsons Blog Post for March 2020: The Home Stretch, Kind Of… by Robert Parsons >From the Editor: With the introduction of the Accessible Instructional Materials in Higher Education Act, blind students across the country have been hard at work advocating for our right to an equal education. However, advocacy takes many forms, even when it comes to our own personal journeys. Robert Parsons is pursuing a Masters degree at Western Michigan University in Rehabilitation Counseling and Vision Rehabilitation Therapy. Robert serves as the Vice President of the Michigan Association of Blind Students, a Board Member of the National Federation of the Blind of Michigan, and the President of the NFBMI Kalamazoo chapter. When he isn't juggling Federation work and an 18 credit graduate courseload, Robert enjoys cooking, reading, and debate. Below, Robert shares his journey and how he learned that engaging in self advocacy both on and off Capitol Hill as a student can make a difference. It is said that people that run track and field experience a sensation called a runner’s high. This experience, where the individual, usually at the precipice of exhaustion, in infused with an invigorating burst of energy that facilitates victory during a race or completion of a previously set goal. My current chapter in the novel that is my journey as a blind student is in the midst of a runner’s high, aptly renamed student’s high. Like the runner’s high, I am at the end of my current journey, at the threshold of academic exhaustion (if I write one more case study, I promise you …), and I am quickly becoming infused with energy and excitement in a medley of realms that is facilitating completion of the task that is graduate school. What’s better, however, is the ambition that this high has built to pursue further academic and professional dreams, something I would have never fathomed prior to my blindness and interaction with many of my mentors. I first decided to return to college and acquire a degree in 2013 after vision loss. While recovering in the intensive care unit of the hospital after the attack that took my vision, my vocational rehabilitation counselor pitched the idea of returning to college and training as a blind student in order to increase my rehabilitation potential. I immediately agreed and became excited about this new experience, but also extremely nervous because I had never met a blind person in an academic setting. However, after training, an introduction to my local NFB chapter in Richmond, VA, and the acquisition of both an Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree, I set my sights on becoming a vocational rehabilitation counselor, where I could instill the same drive to guide my future as my counselor and mentors had with me. Such readiness drove me to apply for and get accepted to Western Michigan University’s dual master’s program for Rehabilitation Counseling and Vision Rehabilitation Therapy. Passion, for me, has always been equated to what gives me the most energy and opens the possibility of creating networks and opportunities. There is no other part of my academic, extra-curricular, and personal experience that accomplishes this more than advocacy. Though I discussed Washington Seminar already, it is only the foundation that was laid for me to hone and craft my advocacy skills. I attended my first Washington Seminar in 2015, where I, along with 27 members of the Virginia affiliate connected with elected officials and their staff to discuss issues that are prevalent to the state’s, a nation’s, blind. The work done there showed me that despite the consensus of a world that always does not consider your potential, skill, and work ethic, you can make a difference in the process of things that affect you. The philosophy of raising expectations for this blind guy carried me to advocate for a job in my community college to tutor students despite my supervisor not being able to fathom a blind student providing that service to his sighted counterparts. During this application process, also in 2015, my supervisor called me into the educational support center to describe her hesitation to allow me to become an English tutor. After advocating fiercely and showcasing my skills, grades, and comprehension of their reporting system, I was given the position to tutor English. Upon graduation from this community college, I was a tutor for English, French, World History, Geography, all of the Sociology courses offered, and Women’s Literature. That first true, tangible success not only showed me I could advocate for myself, but that I was good at it and could do it effectively for others. This influenced my decision to become a rehabilitation professional, the decision to advocate for my spot in my fraternity, Iota Phi Theta, Inc., and a plethora of other organizations around all three of the campuses I have traversed throughout my academic career. This advocacy also gave me the confidence and vocabulary to have difficult conversations with my loved ones, who culturally are still understanding blindness, to release the reigns on my frequent travel and trust my abilities to do the excellent work of the Federation nationwide. Where things are right now in my educational journey makes me cringe, smile, and binge eat cookies out of anxiety. I began my graduate program in 2018, where it was projected that I would complete the program between 3.5-4 years. Since beginning, however, I have taken the maximum course load of 18 credits each term while working on Federation projects, publishing my own article in a peer-reviewed journal, and finding what interests me most in the rehabilitation field. This term, the final for my coursework, I began my practicum experience in one program and applied for internships in the other. Working deadlines for applications, researching information for certification exams, and doing the great work of the Federation has revealed to me that I am not only interested in rehabilitation counseling, but even more interested in effecting the way that the higher education community trains and prepares these future counselors to interact with and advocate for their blind clients. While I have been enjoying my experiences in completing one chapter of my educational journey, I believe that I have discovered that my passion has shifted a bit. It is for that reason that I declare my next leg of the journey will be as a doctoral candidate for a Rehabilitation Administration graduate program. My student’s high during my home stretch instantly became the prelude to the next chapter in this novel, because with higher expectations my achieved realities continues to spark new dreams. Students, there is so much power in unwavering support and a network that provides empathy. The National Association of Blind Students and the Federation as an organization has these qualities, and without this family I would have slowed my momentum years ago. Be best! We in the National Association of Blind Students recognize the additional accessibility challenges that these measures pose to our community, and we, as a mighty division of the National Federation of the Blind, want to do everything in our power to support blind students in these unprecedented times. We invite you to read the NFB's blog post that was published on Monday March 16, 2020 entitled "Don't Be a Barrier: Be Accessible NOW" for more information from the national office. We will be sending out more updates in the coming days and weeks with helpful resources to tackle spring classes; however, we recognize that access barriers vary greatly among individuals, and we want to work directly with you to answer questions and formulate solutions. That is why we are beyond excited to launch our Inaccessibility in Online Education Support Form , where students, parents, and educators alike can reach out to leaders of the National Association of Blind Students directly for individualized support. We intend to respond to all requests within 48 hours of filling out the form. Although the need for online accessibility is more apparent than ever, we are grateful to also have NFB partners supporting us during this time. Here is a message from Aira Tech Corp that was sent out on Tuesday March 17, 2020. "Free Offer - College Students in Need of Aira We know that many universities and colleges are rapidly shifting to distance learning. We've heard that some materials and software being used are inaccessible so we will be offering free Aira for any college student for the remainder of the spring semester ending in May 2020. If you know of a student who could benefit from Aira for their distance learning, please email support at aira.io for more information on the program." Finally, we understand that one of the most daunting realities of these circumstances is navigating STEM coursework online and wanted to share an opportunity to learn more about data visualization for the blind. More details are below about a Remote-only workshop with Ed Summers, Director of Accessibility, SAS; and Chancey Fleet, Affiliate-in-Residence, Data & Society Research Institute, happening on Thursday March 19, 2020. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or the rest of the NABS Board. We are here for you and are excited to see this community break down the artificial barriers that stand before us! All the Best, Trisha Kulkarni She/her/hers Legislative and Self-Advocacy Committee Chair | National Association of Blind Students A Proud Division of the National Federation of the Blind trishak.nfb at gmail.com www.nabslink.org Remote-only workshop with Ed Summers, Director of Accessibility, SAS; and Chancey Fleet, Affiliate-in-Residence, Data & Society Research Institute Thursday March 19, 2:00 - 3:30 PM People who are Blind or visually impaired do not have equal access to quantitative information including charts, graphs, and maps. For example, many of us simply cannot perceive the data visualizations and dashboards that are regularly published by mainstream news organizations. As a result, we often have limited or nonexistent access to critical data, including information we need to make informed decisions pertaining to our work, finances and health. As charts depicting the spread of Coronavirus and modeling how to flatten the curve are seen and discussed worldwide with Blind and visually impaired people largely excluded from the conversation, we are starkly reminded that nonvisual access to data is vital to our equality and well-being. The charts and graphics popularly known as "data visualizations" can - and should - be represented in formats that Blind and visually impaired people can use. This remote-only workshop is presented with Ed Summers, a blind Computer Scientist and leader in the field of accessible data visualization, who will guide us through an accessible, multimodal exploration of data. Participants will gain timely insights about key charts, including material pertaining to COVID19 that has become ubiquitously available to sighted people in recent weeks. The presentation will use high contrast visuals in conjunction with sonification (explorable audio output). After the presentation, participants will be able to explore these and other charts, graphs, and maps themselves using the free SAS Graphics Accelerator software. Please register to participate in this online-only workshop by emailing Chancey at datasociety.net or calling Chancey at 347.632.8383. You may choose to participate on Zoom through either a web link or a dial-in number. As part of the Senate’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) has proposed to include a provision in the pending stimulus bill that would give the Secretary of Education authority to approve state waiver requests for any statutory and/or regulatory requirement of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for one year and extensions may also apply. The stimulus package is expected to drop as early as this weekend. This provision would be detrimental for children with disabilities. I am writing as a concerned (parent, teacher, blind person, etc.) to urge you to reject any provision that would provide waiver authority to the Secretary of Education regarding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Over seven million children rely on IDEA to receive special education supports and services. A Facebook post below, written by a student named Nina plus other posts, describes the law, Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, (IDEA), in which the law gives rights to students with disabilities. It is being under attack by legislation this weekend! Below, you will find the post in quotation marks, including the post itself written by the student. Other posts will be shown as well from other people, including the latest posts from The Blind Advocate Network social media. Please, if you have a minute, call your Senators Office at (202) 224-3121. We must not change the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act! Please stay updated as this page will be updated periodically. Please, consider sharing this page with anyone. “Many of us received word not even a few hours ago that as a part of the legislative response to COVID-19, Senator and Chairman of the HELP Committee Lamar Alexander from Tennessee has included a clause that would allow schools to wave the rights of students granted by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This legislation could drop as soon as this weekend! This means that in a time where the classroom has been turned upside-down, with so many schools moving to distance learning, our K-12 students would lose their rights to an Individualized Education Plan, to accommodations on assignments and exams, etc. In a time of crisis, the rights of our students can not be violated! Please, please, please! If you are able to reach out to your Senators and educational staffers, please do so! This will affect so many students, and while I understand that the whole country is in panic, that is no reason to take away our kids’ rights to an equal education. Please share! This will affect students, educators, parents, administrators, and so many others.” From annajee82 at gmail.com Fri Mar 20 01:50:27 2020 From: annajee82 at gmail.com (Anna Givens) Date: Thu, 19 Mar 2020 21:50:27 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Last chance to apply for summer internship in DC Message-ID: <2A0F6937-E443-4854-8CB2-9F69480190BD@gmail.com> Please share with your networks. Message-ID: Hi all! I’m taking an environmental science class this spring term at my local community college. As the result of the political, economical and demographically affects of the Corona Virus, my school is being forced to go vertual for at least half of spring term. Because of this, my environmental science class practically had to be reborn; built for the online world. Since the orriginal face to face counterpart which is what I signed up for envolves fieldtrips, they also have to go vertual. I found out today that my environmental Science teacher has to use Google Earth to translate the fieldtrips to the vertual and distance learning world. I suspect this is the tip of the iceburgh. I took a look at Google Earth and discovered it’s inaccessible. Does anyone know of any accessible counterparts to Google Earth that are comparable? Does any one know of tricks and tips to be competitive with Google Earth? Does anyone even know of ways to even come close to meet disability standards to survive education around this inaccessible gap in my college education? As the result of attending school, I discovered that writing is one of my gifts. On the other hand, I have eighth grade spelling. Because of my eighth grade spelling, I’m currently working on improving my spelling where it is possible. I also discovered that math is my biggest weakness. I know that right now you are all dealing with a lot of changes and challenges relating to COVID-19. There is a lot of uncertainty at this time, but you can definitely count on at least this one thing: the National Federation of the Blind will be awarding 30 merit based scholarships this year! Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be one of our finalists! The application deadline is next week, March 31. Make sure you hit the submit button before then! If you are having difficulty obtaining documents you need to complete your application, we can help. For instance, you can upload a screenshot of your digital transcripts or grades, if your university offices are closed and you can’t get official copies. You can email the images to scholarships at nfb.org. Is your eye doctors office closed, or your state rehab agency? Your NFB State president can certify that you are legally blind. Letters of recommendation can be emailed directly to us by the people who write them. You don’t need to connect with anyone in person. If you are facing other barriers to completing your application, please let us know, so we can support you. Send us an email at scholarships at nfb.org, or, give us a call at 410-659-9314, extension 2415. To recognize achievement by blind and visually impaired scholars, the National Federation of the Blind annually offers blind college students in the fifty states, the District of Colombia and Puerto Rico the opportunity to win one of thirty merit-based, national-level scholarships worth from $3,000 to $12,000. All scholarships awarded are based on academic excellence, community service, and leadership. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity! Make sure you hit the submit button on your scholarship application before March 31! I was not hosting; just joining the "party." 1. No issue installing the extension 2. HOwever, I couldn't seem to find a way to actually join the party when I clicked the url that the host shared with me. I had to get a sighted person's assistance. 3. Once I joined, I could enjoy the feature for the most part. When the host started playing the film, it started for me as well. My setting of audio description being turned on worked for me as well, although the host didn't have it turned on from her end. The person who helped me actually join the party turned on the chat feature for me, so I was able to participate in the chat. However, I am not super confident that the chat toggle is intuitively accessible for those using JAWS. Lastly, there is a feature that allows you to give yourself a name. I couldn't figure that out on my own either. The default is set such that you are represented by an image selected randomly by the Netflix. For example, I was represented as a Pizza image. If anyone on the list has figured out how to use the extension more accessibly, I would love to learn about that. I am super excited to be one of the volunteers for this hotline as well, and today will be sharing information all about the National Homework Hotline for blind and visually impaired students, as well as sharing some of my favorite virtual resources that can benefit students. Who is this for? The National Homework Hotline is for students of all ages, from kindergarten through college, that are blind, have low vision, or have some form of visual impairment that need assistance with assignments or using assistive technology to make things accessible. Related links What exactly is the National Homework Hotline? The National Homework Hotline is a free resource for students that are blind or visually impaired that need assistance with using assistive technology or with their coursework during school closures. The hotline is staffed by volunteers including TVIs, assistive technology specialists, tutors, blind/low vision mentors, STEM professionals, and college students. People can contact the hotline through email by sending a message with their student’s first name, grade, a specific description of the help they need, and a phone number they can be reached at, or by calling 732-835-6672 and leaving a message with the same information. Related links When will it be available? The hotline is currently available now and will be available through April 20th, though this is likely to be extended as more states are expected to announce extended school closures and the number of volunteers increases. Callbacks for messages on the hotline take place from 12 PM to 8 PM eastern standard time, Monday through Friday. While the exact length of calls may vary, most calls typically last about 30 minutes. This post will be updated if the hours change in the future. Related links Where can the National Homework Hotline be helpful for me? The National Homework Hotline is able to help with a variety of topics, including but not limited to: * Using screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and similar tools * Using screen magnification tools * Accessibility settings and app recommendations for completing assignments * Help with using Microsoft and Google products for education * Nemeth and literary Braille * Cranmer abacus * Refreshable Braille displays * Core curriculum subjects (math, English/language arts, science, history/social studies) Related links Why should I use it? Blind and visually impaired students who are having trouble adjusting to virtual/distance learning can benefit from the resources provided by the National Homework Hotline, especially if they currently have limited/no access to their teacher of the visually impaired, assistive technology specialist, or other support staff they would traditionally have in the classroom or school environment. I know from experience that it can be challenging to learn new technology and new material in the classroom at the same time, and that it’s easy to fall behind in class if the student is being presented with inaccessible materials. Many of the volunteers on the hotline are also blind or have low vision, so they have firsthand experience of what it’s like to use screen magnification for algebra 2 or how to use a Braille display to read a paper for English. They can also share additional free resources for people that are looking for assistance with assistive technology or with other educational topics. Related links How do I volunteer for the National Homework Hotline? The National Homework Hotline is currently accepting visually impaired and sighted volunteers that would be available for at least one 90 minute shift a week to answer phone calls and other messages. People who are interested in becoming a volunteer can fill out the form linked below, and someone from the group will contact you with more information after reviewing your application. Related links Final thoughts I am so grateful that the National Homework Hotline resource has been made available for blind and visually impaired students who are learning more about how to use their assistive technology and how to create their own accessible materials, two skills that are highly valuable when preparing for transition. I highly recommend taking advantage of this free resource during this time of extended school closures, and I hope that the National Homework Hotline is helpful for others! (In a previous e-mail, I supplied a list of keystrokes for hosting/participating in a Zoom meeting – they are reproduced at the end.) To have full keyboard accessibility support within the Zoom meeting: The toolbar must be set to not automatically hide. This can be done by unchecking the "Always show meeting controls" under the "Accessibility" section of the application Settings, or in the "In-meeting (basic)" section of the web portal Settings. This may also be accomplished on a per-meeting basis using the "Toggle the 'Always show meeting controls' option in Settings/Accessibility" keyboard shortcut: The table below contains a list of important PC and MAC navigation keyboard shortcuts: Description Windows macOS Toggle the "Always show meeting controls" option in Settings/Accessibility Alt Ctrl + \ Navigate among Zoom popup windows/toolbars F6 CMD + ~ Change focus to Zoom meeting controls (at the top when sharing your screen at the bottom when not sharing) Ctrl + Alt + Shift CMD + ~ Begin remote control Alt + Shift + R Ctrl + Shift + R Note regarding screen reader (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, Talkback) access to Zoom screen sharing: Although the screen reader can access information on the host or presenter computer, it is not accessible to the participant computer. Screen sharing may involve the whiteboard, Notepad/ Word document, PowerPoint, etc. The screen reader cannot access these. User content shared through Zoom’s screen sharing feature is rendered to meeting participants as an HD video stream. In order to make contents of the screen share accessible to attendees who use screen readers, it is important that the presenter completely describe what is on the screen and provide the files/ notes with meeting attendees. Zoom provides file upload capabilities in its in-meeting chat so that meeting hosts may share files to participants while in-meeting. This solution will ensure that the document's full content and semantic markup is preserved and made accessible to screen reader users. Preferably, the non-visual user must receive the files beforehand. When in a meeting: Use a headset with mike or set of earphones with mike. Set the Zoom audio control to internal, so that your audio output is not heard within the meeting. Use of the Zoom remote control feature to control another computer's screen reader: Zoom's remote-control feature allows users to control the screen sharer's screen reader. The host computer must first enable "share computer audio" to stream the screen reader speech output to the guest computer. Once the guest has gained remote control, the common screen reader keystrokes will be registered on the host computer. Some Available Keyboard Shortcuts: * F6: Navigate among Zoom popup windows. * Ctrl+Alt+Shift: Move focus to Zoom's meeting controls * Alt: Turn on/off the option Always show meeting control toolbar in Accessibility Settings * Alt+F1: Switch to active speaker view in video meeting * Alt+F4: Close the current window * Alt+A: Mute/unmute audio * Alt+M: Mute/unmute audio for everyone except host Note: For the meeting host only * Alt+S: Launch share screen window and stop screen share Note: Will only work when meeting control toolbar has focus * Alt+Shift+S: Start/stop new screen share Note: Will only work when meeting control toolbar has focus * Alt+T: Pause or resume screen share Note: Will only work when meeting control toolbar has focus * Alt+R: Start/stop local recording * Alt+C: Start/stop cloud recording * Alt+P: Pause or resume recording * Alt+H: Display/hide In-Meeting Chat panel * Alt+U:Display/hide Participants panel * Alt+I: Open Invite window * Alt+Y: Raise/lower hand * Alt+Shift+R: Gain Remote Control * Alt+Shift+G: Stop Remote Control * Ctrl+2: Read active speaker name * Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H: Show/Hide floating meeting controls * Ctrl+W: Close current chat session * Ctrl+Up: Go to previous chat * Ctrl+Down: Go to next chat * Ctrl+T: Jump to chat with someone Alfred T. The webcams on most laptops are centrally located along the top half of the screen, therefore when the lid is open the camera is towards you already in a much more stable angle without being too shaky. If iPhone is your only option, propping up on the edge of a table vertically with the charging port facing down may do the trick. Opening an app such as native camera app or SeeingAI set to front facing camera and hearing for VoiceOver feedback when your face comes into the frame could help greatly with knowing where and how your phone should be angled for the camera to see your face. I was also thinking a music stand if you have those laying around, but that might be a bit tougher to get hold of, ha ha! Good luck on online classes! In the midst of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic, I wish everyone good health and a sound mind. In addition to the virus itself, many of us are worrying, with good reason, about the accessibility of our new online college courses and materials. I wish I could be here to tell everyone that things will be accessible, but I cannot. What I can tell you, though, is that you have over 50,000 blind people here to support you every step of the way. As many of you know, we have been trying, for almost ten years, to convince Congress to take action to establish accessibility guidelines for instructional materials in higher education. Today, we call the legislation "AIM High." If that legislation had passed when we first brought it up, those guidelines might have already been implemented, and all of our instructional materials and technology could have been made accessible by now. A classic Chinese proverb says, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." The task is simple if we all do our part. We need to collect stories from blind students and recent graduates about accessibility problems that they experienced in education after high school. If you have not shared your story with us yet, or if you have a better story than the one you submitted months ago, please take a few minutes to tell us your story. You don't need to be a lawyer. You don't need to understand how the government works. You just need to know that some website, software, or something else you had to use for school was inaccessible. Tell us about it. Here is the form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf68TacBetKMAHZcMhGJLmYgeWDIjjpSm9Sz1OUwYKxzsIEAg/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1 Once you tell your story, please get other blind students to do the same. This way, we can show Congress that blind students care about accessibility and that we need their help. Thank you, and everyone please be safe out there. We need you in the years ahead. Together, with love, hope, and determination, we will transform dreams into reality. Using jaws 2020 , nvda 2019.3 windows 10 64 bit pro. On a assus laptop. Doing a network course from http://www.upskilled.edu.au. Got a free dedicated server for assignments from http://www.heropa.com. But only for assignments and assessments. As their web tool is totally unuser friendly and not accessible. Looking to rebuild. So looking for a free vm. Did sign up for the vmware workstation education, but was rejected my application. Not sure. And also listening to videos from http://www.pluralsight.com and from http://www.linedinlearning.com. Vm ware player, asks for me to turn off credential guard manager and security settings, if people are familiar with that. Now, tried that and when trying to install windows server 2016 iso, could not turn that feature off. In vritual box, no way to turn the audio on, and it kept either crashing or powering off. Hyper v manager the same. So can any one doing a networking course, let me know. And Microsoft azure, trying to set up a free student account, would not recognize my landline voip phone. Don't have a mobile phone, credit card, paypal. And now, any one got any good recommendations for a free, accessible vm, that will work with jaws, nvda, windows narrator. And able to then install such server os as windows server 2008 r2, 2012, 2016, docker, etc. Any ideas or help. Want to get my hands dirty and learn how to install, configure and use networking. Any one got any ideas or in the same boat. My college does not have a dedicated online server. Doing this online and with about 11 other sighted students. Any ideas. Help. Thanks. So what you have to do, is get a VMware player 15 and create a virtual machine from the menu bar using the I SO radio button, then if it’s asking you about problems with the bios like enabling virtualization, you have to get cited assistance to go into the bios, make sure you read the exact message and error message it’s giving you, as it will tell you exactInstructions on what to enable. Once you do that virtual machine will turn on and you can start narrator by doing windows enter and following the steps as you would on any computer. Then we should get everything set up you can start NVDA or draws or whatever program do you want like any regular windows computer. As far as any kind of network administration, I have no knowledge of Thanks and hope this is helpful to you. Sent from my iPhone > On Mar 31, 2020, at 3:47 AM, Marvin Hunkin via NABS-L wrote: > > Hi.
