Using a tool for my networking course via http://www.upskilled.edu.au and they use a web tool called heropa http://www.heropa.com. Totally unuser friendly, and not accessible with screen readers, jaws, nvda, windows narrator and using windows 10 http://www.heropa.com. Now any other accessible web apps for an assignment need to do and a practice aswell. Installingwindows, configuring stuff, etc. also using a simulation called storm package for configuring a router, and not accessible at all. So does any one know of any other more accessible web tools, so I can then pass on to my trainers, and then can offer. They are trying to rebuild the heropa tool, but not sure when. Could be waiting months, and also for the storm package, have to configure a online software router, thanks. It's very nice to meet you. I'm also new to this list and just joined it about a month ago. Music sounds like a great field to study in college. It wasn't my major in college. However, I used to play instruments like the piano as a kid. Since I'm working on getting my Master's degree at the moment, I have plenty of experiences from going down the college road as an undergraduate student that I would be happy to share with you if you want. If you have questions or would like more advice on all things college as a blind student, don't hesitate to let me know. If you want to message me personally, you can email me at plangkau4 at gmail.com about any questions you have or if you just want to casually email a fellow student back and forth. I love meeting and getting to know new people. Also, aside from tons of resources from the NFB site, another place to find career resources and career exploration programs for blind students is lighthouse-sf.org I hope this information is interesting and helpful to you. If you would like to know more, feel free to email me or reach out to anybody from the Nabs list. We have tons of students here who also have great college advice to share with you. The point is you should also save your wage stubs because I believe right now Social Security is phone only. So just in case they don’t answer your call it’s always best to act as if you are already doing what they’re going to ask you to do. Always best to protect yourself against the potential overpayment. The other thing is keep track of any money you spend that is blindness related directly in order to do said summer job. In other words you have to buy something that relates to you being able to do the job and it’s because you are blind, keep receipts and any documentation that proves that it really is for said purpose. This of course counts against your wages in other words if you have to buy something that chews up what you made but they can account what you made against you the fact that you bought something that was for the job but it was because it’s a blindness work expense that will be deducted from what they think you earned. I hope this makes sense? Sincerely Maurice Mines. PS the $65 amount that I put at the beginning of this email is an example I’m sure it is different since that amount changes every year. And I believe students get some leniency on this but it always helps to be somewhat conservative on this. Just in case the worker doesn’t understand the blindness rules. > On May 4, 2020, at 11:23, Mike Capelle via NABS-L wrote: > > Yes, you do. > > -----Original Message----- > From: NABS-L On Behalf Of Vejas Vasiliauskas via > NABS-L > Sent: Monday, May 4, 2020 1:11 PM > To: nabs-l at nfbnet.org > Cc: Vejas Vasiliauskas > Subject: [NABS-L] Summer jobs and SSI > > Hi everyone, > I hope you are doing well. > My last internship was unpaid, but it is likely that the internship I'll > have this summer will be paid. Even though I feel comfortable testing new apps and file formats, I’ve met many users who prefer to stick to familiar programs and file formats that they know how to work with, or that are unable to download additional apps to read titles from Bookshare. Since a lot of these users already feel comfortable using word processing software like Microsoft Word, today I will be sharing my tips for reading Bookshare titles with Microsoft Word, and how it can help with supporting learning. What is Bookshare? Bookshare is an online accessible library that provides copies of accessible books for people with print disabilities, which is defined as the inability to read standard print. At this time, there are over 700,000 titles available, including New York Times Bestsellers, new releases from popular authors, non-fiction books, textbooks, and many more. The cost of Bookshare ranges from free to $50 a year, depending on the type of subscriber, and users will need to submit a proof of disability form before being able to access the service. Related links File formats available on Bookshare Bookshare books are available in the following formats: * Bookshare Web Reader (opens book in browser) * EPUB * DAISY * Braille Refreshable Format/BRF * MP3 * DAISY Audio * Word All of the titles on Bookshare are available in these file formats, and users can download titles in multiple formats as well. Related links How to download Bookshare titles for Word To download a Bookshare title as a Word document, follow these instructions: 1. Go to the page for the Bookshare book of choice 2. From the “Select Download Format” dropdown menu, select Word. Alternatively, users can set their preferences within this dropdown menu so that Word is the default format for downloads 3. Press the Download button 4. Save the downloaded document in an easy-to-find location It’s worth noting that users do not need Microsoft Word to read documents in the Word file format- any word processing app or reading tool that supports these types of files will work. However, many of the tips in this post are specific to the latest version of Microsoft Word on Office 365/Microsoft 365. Related links Changing font size/style Some reading apps do not have many options for choosing different fonts or font sizes, and some users may have difficulty reading the largest font size available. Microsoft Word has a much larger assortment of fonts and font sizes, as it comes with over 100 different fonts, supports bold and italic font styles, and displays text in up to size 1638 pt font. While I’m not sure that many readers will choose to read text in the maximum font size, they can set font sizes larger than 72 pt font by typing a different number in the font size dropdown box. Related links Customizing line spacing For users that prefer to have increased line spacing when reading, this can be configured within the Paragraph section of the Home ribbon. I prefer to use 1.5 line spacing for my own reading (and my own website features 1.8 line spacing), though some of my friends prefer double or even triple spacing so that they can easily focus on different lines of text. Searching within text Whenever I’m reading a Bookshare book for a research paper, I like to use the Navigation tool to be able to search for specific words, phrases, or sentences so that I can easily record information or copy and paste it into my notes. This is also incredibly helpful for finding short selections of text or locating a section of a book to read in class. Users can open the Navigation tool by pressing the ctrl-F keyboard shortcut or in the Edit section of the Home ribbon. Related links Choosing a different page color I get eyestrain from staring at white backgrounds for long periods of time and prefer to use a different page color if I am going to be reading for a while. By clicking on the Design ribbon and going to the Page Background section, I can change the page color to be virtually any color I can think of- my favorites being a light blue, light purple, or light yellow. If users choose a black background, Word will automatically change the font color to white as well- of course, if users prefer a different font color for their document, this can be configured in the Font menu on the Home ribbon. Related links Having text read out loud Need to have text read out loud, but don’t want to activate a screen reader? Users can benefit from the Read Aloud feature in the Speech section of the Review ribbon, which will read selected text or a whole document out loud. Users can configure the voice speed and select from three different voices within the Settings section of the Read Aloud feature, as well as pause and go forward/backward in the text. Related links Using Immersive Reader For users who want to have more control over the display settings for reading a Bookshare book but don’t want to change any settings, Immersive Reader is an awesome tool that can help users simplify their reading experience. I have a full post linked on Immersive Reader below, but some of the highlights include: * Configuring text spacing * Highlighting words/parts of speech * Choosing a different page color * Using a line focus to display text Related links Final thoughts I’m grateful to have so many different options for reading, and reading Bookshare titles with Microsoft Word is a great option for users who are looking for a simple way to read their favorite books, or to discover new favorites. I hope that this post on reading Bookshare titles with Microsoft Word is helpful for others as well! -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... There is a petition being filed with the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights against the College Board. College board is not providing blind students with the proper accommodations. College Board has made AP exams this year online. They are not providing tactile graphs and diagrams to students. College board has told students that they should have someone at home describe diagrams and graphs. This is unacceptable. I live with my mom and brother, both of which are visually impaired. I decided to formally join the class petition. I am taking the AP Chemistry, AP US Government and Politics, AP US History, and AP Calculus AB exams. This will make older add-ons coded in python 2.7 unusable with the later versions of NVDA. Add-ons are constantly being updated to the newer python 3 codebase, so I highly encourage you to check the developer page or add-on repositories for the latest version of the add-ons you are wanting to install. I bought both the e-textbook as well as the Kindle edition of the book. The e-textbook is through Yuzu and works fine for navigating the book. However, the Kindle edition is another story. I'm listening to the book on my Echo device. It's great if you want to read from start to finish, but that's not what I need to do as it is a textbook. I'm currently on the phone with Amazon support and they are baffled that the commands they were given do not work for my book. What seems to be happening is that Alexa is skipping by heading instead of chapters. Has anyone had this experience with textbooks? Other than that basic commands for jaws or NVDA work, I have never tried it with iOS with voiceover, but I’ve heard from other people that it is accessible on that platform as well. Message-ID: hello students, and creators of the NABS NOW Podcast, i am currently listening to your most recent episode of this Podcast, and I did read your email about diversity and inclusion. I am happy that you all came up with this awesome idea of a Podcast from students, to students. As I listen to this, i am thinking of an idea that might be of great benefit to other students, and would promote diversity and inclusion on a wider level, and to other communities than to the ones that you have reached out t. The podcast is recorded in English, but I think it would be a great idea to have translation for those who are non-English speakers. i live in southern Texas where there are many Spanish speakers who wish to have the resources, and support that is promoted in this podcast. I'm sure that in area where you live, and within this organization, there are people who may not speak, or if they do speak English,, it is on a more limited level. Having a translation team for this podcast can definitely expand the horizons, and reach out to other communities, so that we can increase our membership within the National Association of Blind Students, and with the National Federation of the Blind. I hope that you consider this idea, as it may give us a chance to prosper even more than we already have. Thank you for taking the time to read this email. Have a great day! Details below. The NABS outreach committee have been hard at work to bring you this month’s upcoming episode of the NABS Now podcast, which will be all about celebrating diversity and inclusion and we need your help. We are seeking for anyone with unique cultural backgrounds, identities which includes but not limited to gender, religion, race, etc, to come forward and share a little bit about yourself. How did other intersecting identities you possess along with your blindness play a role in your everyday life? What would you like others to know about the various identities and backgrounds you possess? Something else that comes to your mind when you hear the words diversity and inclusivity? All who may have valuable input for this episode are welcome, and no podcasting experience is necessary. The episode will be an open round table discussion which will be held over Zoom. Please RSVP to this invitation by Friday, May 22 if you would like to participate in this episode and have your voice be heard. We are thrilled to have all of you join us for what I anticipate to be a very productive, informal and engaging conversation about diversity and inclusion. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions about participating in this episode. I think it also largely depends on the type of fundraiser. For example, many campus organizations do T-Shirt fundraisers, so it often times makes sense for students to pay the vendor directly. However, this is not always possible depending on the fundraiser. Has your student division explored using PayPal or Venmo? I know that is not exactly streamlining the process, but it does eliminate the need for physical paper checks. Another option is to streamline this process through your affiliate's website if the webmaster has the capability. The ruling is a victory for Joseph Drenth, a blind Chalfont resident, who fears going to his local polling place because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Drenth's immune system is slightly compromised, and his wife and mother-in-law, with whom he lives, both have asthma and complicating factors. The Honorable Jennifer P. Wilson, district judge for the Federal District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, issued a temporary restraining order after a Wednesday hearing in the lawsuit that Mr. Drenth and the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania (NFB-PA) filed last week. The court's order requires the state to provide blind voters with a list of the candidates on the ballot for their voting district along with an accessible electronic form on which they can type in their choices for each office. Blind Pennsylvania voters who wish to use the AWIB must request the accessible form by no later than 8PM on Friday, May 29. Eligible voters must have applied for an absentee or mail-in ballot by the May 26, 2020 deadline, and not yet have submitted a paper ballot. The AWIB must be submitted along with a declaration and a valid identification number. Voters must return their AWIB materials by first-class mail or hand-delivery to the County Board of Elector's office in the voter's jurisdiction by no later than 8:00 p.m. on June 2, 2020. More details are available in this press release [2] from the Pennsylvania Department of state. The lawsuit, which will continue in order to resolve the question of accessible absentee and mail-in ballot solutions for elections later this year, alleges violations of Title II of the Americans with disabilities act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation act of 1973. The plaintiffs were represented by Disability Rights Pennsylvania [3] and Brown Goldstein Levy LLP [4]. "Although this temporary solution is not ideal, we commend Judge Wilson for ruling expeditiously, for making it clear that commonwealth officials must respect the rights of blind voters, and for recognizing that the status quo was unacceptable," said Lynn Heitz, president of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania. "In light of this ruling and the judge's clear direction at the hearing, we hope that the commonwealth will work quickly with us to identify and implement a fully ADA-compliant voting solution for future elections." ### ABOUT THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), headquartered in Baltimore, is the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind Americans. Tonight, Friday, May 29, we present a special Mountain Time at 5. What is the Future of Blindness in America. What is the Future of the National Federation of the Blind. What is the Future of the Randolph-Sheppard Program. Tonight we want to hear from you. Tonight we will pose provocative questions. Tonight we will also be using the polling feature of zoom for folks who are not dialing in. But we will make sure everyone can participate. So, let's start by asking everyone what they think life will look like for blind people in ten years, 20 years, etc. How much will technology fundamentally change the nature of being blind? How will sources of artificial vision and artificial intelligence change the way we live? A key question, in the brave new world, what will the role of the NFB be? What will be our relevance? Will there be a need for the NFB? Will we fade away or shift our focus to more of providing services and doing more international work? We do hope you will join us and invite others. Whether you are from Colorado or across the Nation you are welcome and encouraged to join us on Zoom. Encourage chapter members to join us. https://zoom.us/j/5955066474?pwd=WDN5Y0lHZytjMG1McmtmY0treFdtQT09 Meeting ID: 595 506 6474 Password: 015571 One tap mobile +13462487799,,5955066474# At Your Service, Kevan Worley Manager, NFBCO Project Literacy Cell: (303)929-2369 www.nfbco.org -------------- next part -------------- _______________________________________________ Colorado-Talk mailing list Colorado-Talk at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/colorado-talk_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for Colorado-Talk: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/colorado-talk_nfbnet.org/slabarre%40labarrelaw.com List archives can be found at From webmaster at nfb.org Fri May 29 21:15:19 2020 From: webmaster at nfb.org (National Federation of the Blind) Date: Fri, 29 May 2020 21:15:19 +0000 (UTC) Subject: [NABS-L] Blind Students and Advocates Resolve Dispute with College Board over AP Exams Message-ID: <20200529211519.7783E6174C23@lx-web-pri.nfb.org> [1] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BLIND STUDENTS AND ADVOCATES RESOLVE DISPUTE WITH COLLEGE BOARD OVER AP EXAMS _STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE BRAILLE EXAMS, TACTILE GRAPHICS_ BALTIMORE, MARYLAND (MAY 29, 2020): Kaleigh Brendle, a blind advanced-placement (AP) high school student from New Jersey, and the National Federation of the Blind [2] (NFB), the nation's leading advocate for the equal education of the blind, have resolved their dispute with the College Board [3] over its administration of the advanced placement examinations to blind and deaf-blind students during the coronavirus pandemic. Ms. Brendle and the NFB filed complaints with the United States Department of Education and Department of Justice on behalf of themselves and four other named students, as well as the class of all other blind and deafblind students. The complaints alleged that the students' rights were violated when the College Board instituted a digital-only format for the exams because of the pandemic and did not provide hard-copy Braille tests and/or hard-copy tactile graphics to students who had requested and been granted those accommodations. The complaints have been withdrawn in light of today's resolution. Without admitting wrongdoing, the College Board has agreed [4] to allow certain students to re-take AP exams using hard-copy tactile graphics (including charts, coordinate planes, diagrams, maps, etc.) and to administer hard-copy Braille tests to students who were already approved for Braille and who request to take or re-take their exams with hard-copy Braille. Students will be able to take the Braille tests by September 15, 2020. For students who re-take exams with hard-copy tactile graphics or hard-copy Braille, any prior answers or test scores will be disregarded. The College Board will also provide a letter to affected high school seniors explaining the delay in testing and scoring so that these seniors can provide that information to institutions of higher education. In a separate letter not related to the complaints, the College Board has also agreed to consult with the National Federation of the Blind on procedures for administering the SAT and SAT subject tests to blind and deafblind students. "My fellow blind and deafblind AP scholars and I never sought confrontation, compensation, or publicity. We desired only to receive fair treatment and to be provided with the materials we require in order to succeed," said Kaleigh Brendle. "We raised our voices on behalf of those who could not, with the hope that every student who needed Braille would receive it. We are grateful to the College Board for listening to and understanding our concerns and working with us to institute change. Now, we can resume preparing for these influential exams and shaping our futures as empowered advocates of equality and opportunity." "It has been a privilege to work alongside these courageous students who raised their voices about the unfair treatment they received during an already stressful time," said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. "This swift and equitable agreement exemplifies the power of collective action. We look forward to further cooperation and collaboration between the College Board and the organized blind movement to improve opportunities for all blind and deafblind scholars." Ms. Brendle and the National Federation of the Blind were represented by Sharon Krevor-Weisbaum [5] and Kevin Docherty [6] of Brown Goldstein Levy LLP [5]. ### ABOUT THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), headquartered in Baltimore, is the oldest and largest nationwide organization of blind Americans.
