Congress is back in session this week. We need to continue to build cosponsor support for the Access Technology Affordability Act (H.R. 431/S. 212). As a quick reminder we are up to 114 cosponsors in the House and 32 in the Senate. This is a terrific accomplishment but we need to do even better in order to increase the likelihood that the ATAA is incorporated into the Build Back Better Act or possibly the omnibus appropriations bill. At the end of this email is a list of all of the Senate cosponsors followed by a list of all of the House cosponsors. If you do not see your Representative or Senator(s) on this list, then please reach out to them and urge them to cosponsor this legislation. Even if you have already reached out to your members of Congress, it is essential that we reach out again because sometimes notes and emails are misplaced and we need to ensure our representatives in Washington receive our message. Remember, it is not just you calling and emailing, but when we all work together the full strength of the National Federation of the Blind is on display. When you call or email, you might say the following: "Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME], and I am a constituent of [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE NAME]. I live in [CITY, STATE]. I would like to urge [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE NAME] to cosponsor the Access Technology Affordability Act, S. 212/H.R. 431. This legislation removes an employment barrier commonly experienced by blind Americans who cannot afford the high cost of access technology by creating a refundable tax credit in the amount of $2,000 to offset the cost of this technology. Thanks." A current list of Senate and House cosponsors is below. You can contact your member of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard and asking for the office in question. The number is 202-224-3121. We have also attached contact lists for Senate and House offices to this email, but if you have any questions on office contacts, please contact Jesa Medders at jmedders at nfb.org. If you contact your senators and representative via email, please copy Jeff Kaloc at jkaloc at nfb.org. Your calls and emails do make a difference. Message-ID: <004101d7e7c5$4564da90$d02e8fb0$@gmail.com> Hi All, I am taking an introductory level finance course next semester. My professor is recommending all students to purchase the TI-BAII Plus. My college's disability office found a product for visually impaired users that emulates the recommended device: The BA II PLUST Emulator Software emulates the BA II PlusT Professional Financial Calculator (requires letter on letterhead stating for visually impaired student) . ViewPlus Technologies, Inc. This company has developed a WindowsR Application called Accessible Graphing Calculator for blind and dyslexic users. It displays the calculator on the computer monitor, and audibly announces all functions and results. Graphs can be displayed as audible tone plots. A 30-day fully functional copy is available at http://www.viewplus.com . Has anyone either used this specific calculator or the software above? Are there any accessible financial calculators out there? I never took a finance course before, so I was surprised to hear that I need a specific calculator for finance calculations. Message-ID: Good morning, NABS Nation! ™ We in NABS are thrilled to inform you that you can now register for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, taking place in the great state of Illinois at the Holiday Inn Chicago O’Hare Area, from March 18-20, 2022. As many of you know, this will be one of our first National Association of Blind Students in-person events since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are ecstatic to gather with some of our NABS family once again. The ever-changing state of our world over the last two years has been an immensely difficult time for many, and we hope that this year’s seminar, fittingly entitled “Back in Action,” provides attendees with the opportunity to learn and grow alongside many students from across the region who find themselves in similar situations, such as adapting to in-person, hybrid, and/or virtual learning; entering the arena of networking and social events on a college campus; living with a roommate for the first time; and so much more. The registration link for our event is below, and we invite you to get registered anytime between now and the closing of our registration window on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST; however, we would like to point out just a few things before you let excitement get the best of you. •Each attendee is responsible for a $100 registration fee, payable to NABS, which will cover meals throughout the weekend as well as administrative expenses necessary to support this event. We encourage you to proactively reach out to your vocational rehabilitation agency and/or National Federation of the Blind state affiliate to help offset this expense. This fee is due by the time registration closes on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST. Until we receive both your registration form response and this fee, your spot is not guaranteed. •Please note that all attendees will need to submit proof of a negative COVID test within 60 hours of our event’s start, regardless of vaccination status. This proof will need to be submitted to a designated party no later than noon on Friday, March 18, 2022. Additionally, masks will be required during any/all 2022 Midwest Student Seminar activities. •Finally, we will not be assigning roommates for this event. We are more than happy to support you in finding a roommate if you require assistance, which you can indicate on the registration form linked below; however, if you do not either take the initiative to procure a roommate or reach out for assistance, you will be responsible for the hotel expense of $109 + applicable taxes and fees for each night of the event. Please take the time to get registered for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, and let the excitement begin! If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com. Happy holidays! There are still spots in the class. All of the information is below my name. Ellen Bartelt Illinois Association of Blind Students Virtual Cooking Course December 29, 2021. Interested in attending a cooking class? You can give the class as a gift for the holidays, or something to make for the new year. The Illinois Association of Blind Students will be administering a virtual cooking course via the Zoom platform on December 29, 2021, from 5-7 P.M. central standard time. This course offers people the opportunity to learn basic cooking skills as they prepare three Mexican dishes. Course objectives and dishes to be covered during this course can be found below: COURSE OBJECTIVES: ✓ Learn how to determine doneness of boiled chicken ✓ Demonstrate basic knife skills while chopping vegetables ✓ Prepare a sweet tomato salsa (sweet means not spicy, so it won’t include hot peppers) ✓ Use the blender (or food processor) in a safe way, while blending hot or warm liquids ✓ Safely use the oven to finish cooking a dish ✓ Cooking and seasoning Mexican food DISHES TO BE COVERED: Torta Azteca: This is a classic, but not so common dish which is the equivalent to a Mexican lasagna. It is made with corn tortillas, tomato sauce, chicken and cheese. It is optional to top it with sour cream, hot pepper salsa and guacamole. Refried Beans: These beans can accompany many Mexican dishes, and are rather simple and easy to prepare. Because of the length of the class, we won’t be cooking the beans, but rather using canned beans for practical purposes. Guacamole: This will not be the classic guac recipe, but it might be the best one you ever had. The classic recipe may only incorporate 4 ingredients, but this one will be enriched to be extra creamy and to hold better and longer, without the avocado turning dark. REGISTRATION: People who wish to participate in the IABS Virtual Cooking Course will be expected to pay an admission fee of $30, as well as purchase materials and ingredients that will be utilized during the course. A full list of materials and ingredients will be sent to all students by December 22, 2021. Spots for the IABS Virtual Cooking course are limited, and only the first eight people who register will be accepted. To register for this course, please reach out to Glenn Moore at gmoore3rd at gmail.com for more information regarding registration and payment for the course. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Please see the email below as well as attached documents for an opportunity to share your experience with online education. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: heidi ancar Date: Sun, Dec 19, 2021, 12:45 AM Subject: Seeking assistance for participant recruitment…Ph.D. dissertation research study To: jacobryanham at gmail.com Hello Mr. Hamm: My name is Heidi Riley-ancar. I am a visually impaired postgraduate student residing in Lawrenceville (GA) who is a PhD candidate currently enrolled in the Organizational Development & leadership/Organizational Diversity online program at the University of Arizona Global Campus. This email is sent to introduce myself to you and give a brief explanation of why I am contacting you. As I mentioned in the introduction of this email, I am currently working on my PhD dissertation and am entering the research study stage of the process. I have received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval from my university and would like your assistance for participant recruitment. I will be conducting research to explore how online college students with visual impairment perceive accessibility challenges and how those challenges influence successful degree completion for this student population. The option of distance education and online learning provides individuals with visual impairment the opportunity to pursue higher education through the utilization of the virtual classroom platform. With this delivery method of providing students the opportunity of pursuing and possibly completing their academic studies, the online/distance learning environment needs to be completely accessible to these students in order for them to be successful in their journey of degree completion. If you can be of any assistance for providing access to participants who fit the following criteria listed below, I would be greatly appreciative of your help and cooperation. To be eligible for participation in this study, potential participants must be: 1. An undergraduate/graduate college student enrolled in at least one (1) online course at a 2- or 4-year college/university. 2. Have a visual impairment that impacts the student’s ability to access course materials/resources. 3. Have experience with online learning that is not fully accessible to the student because of his or her visual impairment. 4. At least 18 years or older. I Have requested and has been granted organizational permission from Ms. Lou Ann Blake (NFB Director of Research, Blind Initiatives) to solicit the assistance for participant recruitment within the organization. I am asking (if permitted) that a copy of the Letter of invitation to the Study be posted to your organization’s newsletter/social media pages to advertise my study for volunteers to contact me if they choose to participate and help with the data collection element of the dissertation. Attached is a copy of the IRB approval letter from UAGC, the Organizational Permission form from the NFB, and the Invitation to the Study Letter that can be posted as a notice of advertisement for my study. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. The information to register is under my name. To register for this course, please reach out to Glenn Moore at gmoore3rd at gmail.com for more information regarding registration and payment for the course. a From winter.renfrow at gmail.com Tue Dec 21 23:03:15 2021 From: winter.renfrow at gmail.com (Winter) Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2021 17:03:15 -0600 Subject: [NABS-L] Published Wisconsin Association of blind students leadership seminar registration In-Reply-To: <2DD5371A-F0F7-4701-BCBF-85F48AC0377F@armandovias.com> References: <2DD5371A-F0F7-4701-BCBF-85F48AC0377F@armandovias.com> Message-ID: <49FC1BEF-E20B-4CD9-8AC7-4DAB25C0C37E@gmail.com> Hello I would like to sign up for this seminar but I am having issues. The Midwest Planning Committee just wanted to drop in with a gentle reminder that you can now register for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, taking place in the great state of Illinois at the Holiday Inn Chicago O'Hare Area, from March 18-20, 2022. As many of you know, this will be one of our first National Association of Blind Students in-person events since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are ecstatic to gather with some of our NABS family once again. The ever-changing state of our world over the last two years has been an immensely difficult time for many, and we hope that this year's seminar, fittingly entitled "Back in Action," provides attendees with the opportunity to learn and grow alongside many students from across the region who find themselves in similar situations. The registration link for our event is below, and we invite you to get registered anytime between now and the closing of our registration window on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST; however, we would like to point out just a few things before you let excitement get the best of you. .Each attendee is responsible for a $100 registration fee, payable to NABS, which will cover meals throughout the weekend as well as administrative expenses necessary to support this event. We encourage you to proactively reach out to your vocational rehabilitation agency and/or National Federation of the Blind state affiliate to help offset this expense. This fee is due by the time registration closes on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST. Until we receive both your registration form response and this fee, your spot is not guaranteed. .Please note that all attendees will need to submit proof of a negative COVID test within 60 hours of our event's start, regardless of vaccination status. This proof will need to be submitted to a designated party no later than noon on Friday, March 18, 2022. Additionally, masks will be required during any/all 2022 Midwest Student Seminar activities. .Finally, we will not be assigning roommates for this event. If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com . Happy (almost) New Year!
