I've found that TShark is a great replacement for wireshark. You write 
your filters and rules in pcap format. You can also use tcpdump to 
capture and filter with TShark or anything else. In some cases, I've 
written my own processors, in others you can use Python and all the 
libraries. Apache Hadoop is also great for some of this depending on 
your end result.

tl/dr: plenty of ways to at least do network analytics.
