Let’s begin by letting me state on behalf of the Michigan affiliate board that we wish all of you a happy and successful blind equality and achievement month (BEAM)! As promised, the Michigan affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind is here to raise awareness and funds towards our newest endeavor. We could use all of your help and promoting and making this event successful, so read below to learn about Project R. E. C. > > > > The Premise > > The NFB of Michigan hopes to charter a Sports and Recreation division that can create activities and pathways to fitness and health in the near future. Our objective is to create this division by our annual state convention in November 2022. To celebrate the induction of this division into our affiliate, we have commissioned a statewide goal ball league, consisting of four teams owned by four leaders of the Federation. These teams will participate in our inaugural goal ball tournament next year, sponsored by the efforts of the division and our state fundraising committee. The champion team will then go on to face other teams of other NFB state affiliates. This is where you can help. Our four team owners are hard at work soliciting donations for the cost to put on such an event and could use the help of each of you to secure its success. From Friday, October 1 until Saturday, November 13, our team owners will be looking for you to share this fundraiser with your community, family, and friends, as well as pledge a donation to support a team. The funds generated from this fundraiser covers: > > Cost of Equipment for the Tournament > Recruitment and Practice Location Use > Personnel Expenses for the Activities > Travel Expenses for Champion Team’s Inter-Affiliate Match > Future Sports and Recreation Programs Throughout the Year > How to Participate > > Donating to this cause is very easy. Simply click the link to the Google Form below. After doing so, complete the donation form. Be sure to indicate which team you intend to pledge to. Pledges cost $5 and donors are able to donate as many times as they choose. Donors can also pledge to support more than one team if they choose. After completing the pledge form, please use the donate button at www.nfbmi.org link to submit your payment to the National Federation of the Blind of Michigan. At the moment, PayPal is the preferred method of payment, but you are welcomed to reach out to one of the team owners listed below and provide them with the payment. Once they receive this, they will be tasked with submitting the payment to our state affiliate. It is only once the payment is received that you will be counted as a donor and your pledge will be recognized. You are also welcomed to share this with family, friends, and coworkers to increase the chances of success this year. > > The Teams > > Our four team owners are all dedicated to expanding the work of our affiliate and the national organization. Our pledge, to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind of Michigan, is always taken seriously, but that does not mean that we cannot get competitive. We invite you to support the team that best fits your interests. The team names and their respective owners are listed below: > > The Marauders: Mike Powell (President, National Federation of the Blind of Michigan) > The Sparks: Jennifer Kennedy (Executive Director, BLIND, Inc.) > The Navigators: KaShonia Graham (Detroit Chapter, National Federation of the Blind of Michigan) > The Chunky Chargers: Robert Parsons (Board Member. National Federation of the Blind of Michigan) > > > > > Prizes > > It would not be a Federation event if we did not offer prizes for competitors. This year, we have received generous donations from various partners that are excited to see the blind become more active. Our prizes have been designated for both donors and team owners for their efforts. There are also prizes that are designed for specific fundraising benchmarks that have been reached. They are: > > Visio 55-inch Television (Awarded to the Team Owner that Raises the Most Money) > Gourmet Chocolate Cheesecake (Awarded to the Donor that Pledges the Most Money) > Echo Dot Speaker (Awarded to the Donor Whose Pledge Brings the Fundraiser Total Past $100) > Gourmet Chocolate Dipped Strawberries (Awarded to the Donor Whose Pledge Brings the Fundraiser Total Past $500) > Google Nest Speaker (Awarded to the Donor Whose Pledge Brings the Fundraising Total Past $1000) > > > So, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about this fundraiser. The link to the form to complete a pledge for donors is below. We look forward to a great BEAM and hope that you all will turn our dreams into reality. That’s right—no caffeine, but tons of homework! Just a few announcements this time. First, we are having a rookie round-up of our own on Saturday at 7:00 PM, geared toward students. Come join us in the usual Zoom room of doom on Saturday at 7:00 PM. Here’s the Zoom link, in case you’ve ignored my many other emails, though why you would do that I certainly can’t imagine. TinyURL.com/CXBZoomRoom. We’ll answer those questions and provide a space to chat. Remember, that’s Saturday at 7:00 PM. tinyURL.com/CXBZoomRoom Also, convention is coming up, and we are very excited. Keep an eye out for some cool fundraisers that we have in the pipeline. I also put together our auction basket but I have to warn you, some Facebook friends are very excited for it. It’s a bunch of tasty, exotic international snacks that everyone can enjoy. And, guess what? It actually comes with a basket! You don't have to be in California to get this basket. I'll send details once the auction site is live. We are also continuously collecting dues, which are required to provide you with the privilege to both vote and to run in elections. You are of course required to be a student at a California school to run for a position, and you also have to adhere to the national membership guidelines, but we encourage everyone who has paid to vote, regardless of student status. Democracy is a cornerstone of our organization. I am stepping down from the presidency, so that is up for grabs as well. Venmo me your dues--$5, which will stay good until the end of December 2022. My username is @cricketbidleman. Spare yourself one cappuccino to support California students. Send me $5, with your name and CABS dues in the memo line. This part is very important for record-keeping purposes! Even if I know you, or even if your username is your name like mine is, put it in the memo line. And that’s about it. Fun fact: a puppuccino is a free thing from Starbucks. It’s basically a free cup of whipped cream. Exploit your dog by bringing them to Starbucks to get free, extra whipped cream for your favorite drink. But do remember that dairy is bad for dogs… Before I make more enemies, I’ll be back to that homework. Cheers, Cricket -- Cricket X. Doesn't matter if they're a parent, teacher, or whatever else, as long as they have something to do with educational accessibility for the disabled. Let's shake up that reporting space. But to do good work, I need technology. Currently I'm struggling with Descript, which is a software for computers that you can record and edit with. It's like Zoom and Reaper all in one, except that it has much better quality than Zoom. Only one problem: every time I open it with JAWS, it mutes JAWS. I'm not sure if this is because I'm working with a beta version, or if Descript is inaccessible. It sort of works with NVDA, but not well enough for me to accomplish anything. Thoughts? If that proves inaccessible, I'm looking for other options. Zoom is a last resort because the audio is just atrocious by recording standards. Cleanfeed is okay, but it's having difficulty with my external microphone. I need recommendations. Thanks. Best, Cricket -- Cricket X. Schakowsky (D-IL) introduced the Medical Device Nonvisual Accessibility Act (MDNA), H.R. 4853 in the House of Representatives. With the rapid advancements in medical technology, it is absolutely paramount that manufacturers of medical devices incorporate nonvisual access into their products. As it currently stands, most newer models of home-use medical devices, such as glucose and blood pressure monitors, along with the emergence of in-home devices that offer medical care options, such as chemotherapy treatments and dialysis, require that consumers interact with a digital display or other interfaces. This new technology has been and continues to be developed and deployed without nonvisual accessibility. The Medical Device Nonvisual Accessibility Act will eliminate this barrier by authorizing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to establish a minimum nonvisual access standard for all Class II and Class III medical devices, which include all of the devices listed above, as well as digital thermometers, oximeters, and many more. The FDA will consult with stakeholders who represent people with disabilities and medical device manufacturers as a part of this process. We encourage you to contact your representative as soon as possible and urge them to cosponsor H.R. 4853. When you call or email, you might say the following: "Hello, I’m [YOUR NAME], and I am a constituent of [REPRESENTATIVE NAME]. I live in [CITY, STATE]. I would like to urge [REPRESENTATIVE NAME] to cosponsor the Medical Device Nonvisual Accessibility Act (H.R. 4853). This legislation authorizes the FDA to establish a minimum nonvisual access standard for home use medical devices so that blind people can operate them safely and independently. Thanks." You can contact your member of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard and asking for the office in question. The number is 202-224-3121. If you email your representative, please copy John Pare at jpare at nfb.org. Your calls and emails do make a difference. I am incredibly glad to know there is someone who is willing to go the extra mile to ensure comics become accessible to us, as well. From what I understand, comics are comprised of images depicting what's going on, and when the characters are speaking the dialog is written in a graphical format. But, and please correct me if I'm wrong about this, comics are just another form of storytelling or scripts written for shows and movies, so perhaps the way to start making comics more accessible for the blind would be to add image descriptions to the action that's going on, while turning the dialog into a text format that screen readers can understand and relay. I email this list way too much. Also, Spam-a-lot was a fairly decent musical. There may be a YOutube bootleg somewhere, but the soundtrack covers quite a bit. Anyway, I have to find an investigative piece that used a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, or Public Records Act (PRA) request to write an essay on this week. I'm drowning my peers and professors with accessibility stories, which they will eventually come to appreciate, so I'm hoping that some of you have recommendations on investigative pieces that I can use for this assignment. If not, I can pick a different subject, but I like this theme... Recommendations would be very much appreciated, especially since I have to contact the authors if possible to get some info and/or an interview. Thanks so much, and now I'm off to finish two assignments. Don't join the procrastination nation like I did recently! Worst part? I don't drink caffeine. Cheers,, Cricket -- Cricket X. Message-ID: <056c8fee-9bc8-d475-0b19-246c5f3d9d56@tysdomain.com> Happy Tuesday! I hope this email finds you well and with plenty of coffee! I would like to tell you about a new tech-related show and podcast called Technically Sound, airing Thursdays from 5:00 to 7:00 PM EST. The idea of this show is to talk about programming-related topics, as well as anything our listeners might find helpful or want to learn about. This could include anything from IDE accessibility to how to deploy and set up a new project. We are also looking for listener direction so that we can discuss topics and ideas relevant to what you want to hear. The show is hosted by myself, Ty Littlefield and Erick Rosso. Together we bring over 15 years of programming and technical knowledge. We will cover recent tech news, any relevant releases, at least one technical topic, listener questions and close with a recommendation from each of us for the week. We will also be interviewing people in the industry or related to projects that our listeners are excited about in the future. Plans also include deep project dives, where listeners provide ideas on open-source projects they would like us to explore; we will explore the code and create structured episodes and discussions around how the code works and our thoughts. We hope that you will tune in for our first show this Thursday, October 14 at 5:00 PM EST. Visit https://venom.fm, or point your media player to venom.fm:8000/live. If you have programming questions, topic ideas or are planning a project and want some thoughts on implementation, please feel free to let us know. You can follow and keep up with us on Twitter: @techsound_cast You can join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/BWjhGDb2zq You can also email us at technicallysound at venom.fm Thanks, and we look forward to you joining us on Technically Sound! My next story is on inaccessibility of online learning platforms, and the impact on K-12 students. Sorry to my fellow higher ed students. I’m choosing to focus on K-12 for now because it’s much more foundational. Here’s an abbreviated version of my pitch. The one I did in class had to explain all the WCAG stuff, but this audience is much more informed. With the shift to online learning during the pandemic, online learning systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas, Google Classroom, Moodle) became wildly popular and necessary for students to succeed. However, these systems all pose accessibility issues, especially on STEM subjects. I’m proposing a story on the detrimental effects of LMS inaccessibility on K-12 students because after we shift back to incomplete in-person learning, online learning platforms will still be popular for K-12 students; instructors find them to be much easier methods of administrating education, grading assignments, etc. There are serious issues with providing proper accommodations though, and LMS’s cannot replace independent living classes. My first story, a shorter one as per assignment guidelines, will have to focus on one platform. I’m choosing Canvas, since thousands of institutions are using it. I’m open to other ideas if other platforms are more popular for K-12 students, but if you’re suggesting another one, give me some data to show that it’s more popular than Canvas for K-12 instruction. This story will very likely turn into a series, which is why I'm choosing one platform for now. Here’s how you can help: share this with parents of K-12 students, educators, special educators, and anyone else who may be interested in doing interviews with me. I will have to reach out to Canvas (or whatever platform I choose) for a statement on their accessibility and how they plan to improve it. I’ll also be looking at their VPAT. TLDR: I need to talk to lots of people. My number is (805) 372-9550. People can reach me via text, call/voicemail, Twitter (@CXBidleman), Facebook, and/or email. My Twitter blew up yesterday, and though lots of notifications can be somewhat difficult, I'm loving it. This story has been long overdue. Send any relevant parties my way. Thanks. The one I made the other disappeared incredibly. Want the recipe? Let me know and I’ll send it along, although honestly I never follow the recipe, so it’s not of too much worth. You’ll have to visit me to get some, so let me know when you’re on the way, and I’ll stick one in the oven. Not too many announcements this week. First, congratulations to the golden state champions! Y’all CABSolutely crushed it at NABS trivia. California convention is October 21-24, so just a few days from now. Details at nfbcal.org/convention. Don’t forget to register. We’ve been hard at work putting it together. In order to run for board positions this year, CABS dues will be accepted until Saturday, October 23rd, at 9:30 AM. What a coincidence… That’s when our meeting starts. Venmo @Cricket-Bidleman with “CABS dues:” followed by your name in the memo line. If you have trouble finding me, send me a note and I’ll request you. If you don’t pay your dues, you will not be eligible to run for positions, regardless of whether or not you meet the other requirements outlined in the national guidelines. I don’t have SquareCash, CashApp, or PayPal, but our treasurer does have PayPal, so let me know if you need to pay that way and we’ll work something out. We also have an auction basket full of international goodies. I don’t have auction details yet, but I’ll let you know when you can start bidding. Keep an eye on my social media. On a personal note, and this has nothing to do with CABS, I’m doing some cool journalism projects exposing the inaccessibility of learning management systems (LMS’s) like Canvas. I’m focusing on Canvas and K-12 students for now, so send me those parents, students, special educators, and anyone else who might be interested. Thanks so much. And that’s about it. Wishing you all the love in the world. I hope you’re blessed with less homework than me. Don’t’ forget to join the CABS meeting on Saturday, October 23rd at 9:30 AM. Does anybody have any tips on how to put up posts or written content on pages with voiceover using WordPress? I am able to access the title fields, the edit field for writing captions, and I’m able to get instant images through Unsplash for the image part of my content, but I’m not able to put in actual paragraphs. I’m able to toggle the ad block button, and I’m also able to press the button that says add a paragraph, but the only thing I get is how to format a paragraph but not access to the space where I can copy and paste or physically write in content. This also is going to be helpful for me when I put written content on separate pages. Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated. Once you are in the place where you can add your title and text, go to More Options, and there should be something that says HTML mode. Once you click on that, you will be taken back to your post, and you should be able to add text. Hope this helps. > On Oct 23, 2021, at 10:04 AM, Mariya Vasileva via NABS-L wrote: > > > > Sent from my iPhone > Hi all, I have been struggling with putting content on Wordpress for the past several weeks. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission. Dear Student, My name is Heidi Ancar. I am a doctoral student at the University of Arizona Global Campus. I am kindly requesting your participation in a doctoral research project that I am conducting titled: Accessibility Challenges of Online Learning Affecting Successful Degree Completion Among Visually Impaired Undergraduate/Graduate Students: An Exploratory Case Study. The intention is to explore how online college students with visual impairment perceive accessibility challenges and how these challenges might influence successful degree completion for this student population. The option of distance education and online learning provides individuals with visual impairment the opportunity to pursue higher education through using virtual classroom platforms. With this delivery method of providing students the opportunity of pursuing and possibly completing their academic studies, the online/distance learning environment needs to be completely accessible to these students for them to be successful in their journey of degree completion. I would like to interview undergraduate/graduate students with visual impairment who are currently taking at least one college course via distance learning/online platforms to explore if these students have encountered any perceived accessible challenges in the classroom and if they perceive these challenges as having any impact on successful degree completion in their studies. To be eligible for participation in this study, potential participants must be: * An undergraduate/graduate college student enrolled in at least one online course at a two- or four-year college/university. * Have a visual impairment that impacts their ability to access course materials/resources. * Have experience with online learning that is not fully accessible to the student because of the student's visual impairment. * At least 18 years of age or older. Participation in this study is voluntary, and participants may withdraw from the study at any time without any notice. The study is completely anonymous; therefore, it does not require you to provide your name or any other identifying information. There is no compensation for participating in this study. If you choose to participate in the study, you will be contacted via email or telephone and schedule an interview at a time mutually agreeable to you and the researcher. The researcher will provide information on the virtual location (Zoom) and how to access the platform. The interview will take approximately one hour to complete. If you have questions regarding your participation in the study, or if you seek to verify authenticity of the study, please contact the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC) Institutional Review Board chair at irb at uagc.edu or the study chair, Susan Gunther, PhD, at susan.gunther at faculty.uagc.edu. My project with Canvas inaccessibility continues, with a later feature about other LMS's. A feature is just a longer article. The focus is on K-12 students and parents, although I'm open to talking to TVI's, parents, and students. Send them my way, please! I spoke to one person, but I need more. Might be interesting to talk to sighted parents about their blind children's experiences, and the parents' difficulties with teaching technology and academic work. Just a thought. Open to other stuff as well. The sooner I can get some interviews done, the sooner I can churn out something illuminating and newsworthy. I did a presentation for my class on universal design. I got the traditional "Wow, I never thought about it that way!" responses. Proves how necessary disability justice news is. This is not limited to California. Thanks, and hopefully I'll have chances to talk to some people in the next couple days. Cheers, Cricket -- Cricket X. Here in Michigan, we are just getting started. Let’s start by updating you on the Michigan affiliate’s fundraiser, Project R. E. C. Our four teams are still looking for sponsors, but it is clear who is making off with the cheesecake! Here are the rankings: > > The Chunky Chargers – Robert Parsons (NABS Board Member) ($75 raised) > The Marauders – Mike Powell (NFB of Michigan President) ($35 raised) > The Sparks – Jennifer Kennedy (BLIND Inc. Executive Director) ($10 raised) > The Navigators – Kashonia Graham (Detroit Chapter) ($5 raised) > > > We would also like to congratulate Donna Posont on helping the Michigan affiliate reach its furst fundraising benchmark. Donna’s donation to this fundraiser pushed us over the $100 threshold, which makes her the proud owner of a brand new Amazon Echo Dot speaker. Friends, the prize for the donor that donates the most is a 55-inch smart television and the highest pledge is $50 so far, so someone is going to have a lovely holiday gift. Remember, it’s not too late to pledge your support to Project R. E. C. Pledges are $5, you are able to donate as many times as you want and can donate to more than one team if you’d like. Simply visit www.nfbmi.org/project-rec > > > > We are also grateful for any members that can share and promote this initiative. The final day for pledges to be taken for this campaign is Saturday, November 13 at 7pm EST. If you have any questions about this fundraiser or how to submit a donation, please feel free to contact me at Robert.E.Parsons at wmich.edu or (804) 801-7674. Message-ID: Hey folks, This is the last episode of the first season of “Keeping Up with CABS”, the only reality show that’s all reality, no show. The California convention wrapped up yesterday, which I will use as a (really bad) excuse for that awful first sentence. As of Saturday, I have stepped down from my presidency. There are plenty of leaders who are far more energetic and creative than I, and it’s time for them to take over. I am so proud to have worked alongside these fantastic people, and although they might like to be, they are not quite rid of me. The new board consists of Shelbi Felter (President), Kyle Garcia (VP), Nikki Dadlani (Secretary), Ethan Fung (Treasurer), and Lindsay Kerr (Board Member). I will always here if they need anything, and I know they will do a fantastic job. We have one event for you this week—a “Meet The Board” call on Saturday at 5:00 PM Pacific. It’s in your favorite Zoom Room of Doom and Gloom. tinyURL.com/CXBZoomRoom One of our board has both broken and bent a bone. I didn’t even know you could do that! Another is so flexible that they can put their foot behind their head. I think I pulled a few muscles just thinking about that. Another has three siblings twenty years apart, and their first vehicle ride was in an ambulance. One lives near a beach, but avoids it like the plague. And another took surfing lessons in elementary. Those last two make an interesting combination. Who’s who? I have no idea. Actually I do, but you don’t. Come on by on Saturday at 5:00 PM Pacific. TinyURL.com/CXBZoomRoom to find out. Also, if you do know who I’m talking about, please no spoilers. Let’s keep the suspense going. Cheers, Cricket -- Cricket X.
