Each month, a state that has a blind parents group will host the call. In September 2021, the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania (NFB-PA)'s Blind Parents Group will be the first host! The NFB of PA is planning a 6-month workshop on the Powers of Positive Parenting and we want to open up our first session to the entire National Federation of the Blind! *When*: Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 7pm to 8:30pm EST *Who*: National Federation of the Blind's Blind Parents Group *Host*: National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania *Where*: Zoom (Information Below) *What*: Monthly National Conference Call for Blind and Visually Impaired Parents *Topic*: Powers of Positive Parenting by Triple P Certified Facilitator *About the Speaker: * Valerie Anderson is a certified facilitator for the Power of Positive Parenting (Triple P Program). We had a discussion that reaffirmed how lucky I am to have been taught technology skills, how lucky I am to have been given technology despite the number of letters of justification and phone calls I’ve had to make, and how I need to get back into Braille. Please remember that though we often face struggles with the Department of Rehab and other similar entities, we are fortunate to have the tools to advocate for others, and that we should represent all blind students with pride and thankfulness. And of course, we should never settle until all blind students are able to acquire equal rights as our sighted peers. And now, let’s get ready to talk about sex. As someone interested in helping to research and to reform sex education for the disabled, I have been waiting for this call for a long time. CABS and I are proud to put on a student-led forum in which we will discuss any aspects of consensual sex that you, our fellow students, feel curious about. We will of course discuss consent. We recognize how insufficient sex education is for blind students, and we would like for you to feel safe and comfortable approaching sexual relationships. As an example, I was shown an anatomy book, but I wasn’t shown how to apply condoms, and I was never shown three-dimensional models of sexual organs, which I believe would have been much more useful. Here’s an anonymous Google form, where you can submit questions ahead of time: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1LATAl-0MF1W0RjYIu2Wqbsq1AjnIHlARv4MQYXVIAyM/viewform?edit_requested=true Please understand that we will be discussing sensitive topics. We will expect that people refrain from recording this call, and we will expect that people be respectful of any questions that are asked, whether those questions concern “kinky” sex, or are asking how to do things, etc. Be respectful. And we will not, in any way, discuss how to conduct nonconsensual sexual activities. Doing so would be unconscionable and unethical. Join us on Saturday at 3:00 PM Pacific, 6:00 PM Eastern. The provisions of the Access Technology Affordability Act have been included in the reconciliation package currently moving through the House of Representatives. We will keep you apprised of this activity. In the meantime, we need to move quickly to build cosponsor support for the Access Technology Affordability Act in the Senate. We currently have 24 Senate cosponsors but if we can dramatically increase this number over the next week or two, it would greatly improve our chances of this bill being included in the Senate version of the reconciliation package. Senator Cardin is the sponsor of the bill. The other 24 Senate cosponsors are listed below. If one or both of your senators has not yet cosponsored the Access Technology Affordability Act (S. 212) then I urge you to call or email them and urge them to please cosponsor this important legislation. When you call or email, you might say the following: "Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME], and I live in [CITY, STATE]. I would like to urge [SENATOR NAME] to cosponsor the Access Technology Affordability Act, S. 212. This legislation removes an employment barrier commonly experienced by blind Americans who cannot afford the high cost of access technology by creating a refundable tax credit in the amount of $2,000 to offset the cost of this technology. Thanks." You can contact your member of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard and asking for the office in question. The number is 202-224-3121. If you email your senators, please copy Jeff Kaloc at jkaloc at nfb.org. Your calls and emails do make a difference. It is best to call or email the relevant staff person in your senator’s office. For your convenience, we have attached a list of relevant staffers in the Senate offices that have not cosponsored the Access Technology Affordability Act (S. 212). I've got a decent amount of comb-bound Braille books, and I'm trying to find the best way to store them. Right now, I just have them in the cardboard boxes they came in, but not sure if that is best. To complicate matters, some of them do not have a Braille label along the spine to identify what book it is (or which volume). Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. I have to confess that I was incredibly nervous about putting on that type of membership call, but the turnout was great. Either Danielle or I will send an email with links to some resources later this week. As always, I am open to feedback, especially since I’m hoping to go into sex ed for the disabled after some time shaking up the field of journalism. There’s a lot to be done there where accessibility is concerned. In both fields, actually. Anyway, did you love the call? Hate it? How can I improve in leading that type of event in the future? Or am I hopelessly bad at it? What are your thoughts? Feel free to email me privately at cricketbidleman at gmail.com. Hate-mail is okay too—I want to learn from you. We have no events this week, but our state convention is coming up! It’s October 21-24, and I’ve got some cool announcements. First, the NFB of California is generously offering scholarships, with one specifically for STEAM students. Here’s the link to the application form: https://www.nfbcal.org/scholarship-programs/ And, I am putting together an auction basket for state convention. This year’s theme? International food and snacks. What are your favorites? We’ll be launching some fundraisers soon. Look out for an email about CABS merchandise, with our new logo. There’s another one too, but I’m keeping it a secret for now. And, because convention is coming up, a quick reminder about membership. Dues-paying members have voting privileges, and may run for board and officer positions if eligible. They can chair or co-chair committees, and may be called upon to plan and/or run events. It’s only $5, and all that money goes toward door prizes, scholarships, running events, and other things that benefit blind students from California. I wish Netflix was that cheap… You can Venmo @cricketbidleman $5, with CABS dues in the memo line, and I’ll add your name to the list. This year’s dues will be good through December 31st of 2022, since we’re shifting to the model that national uses. And that’ about it, as brought to you by your favorite fan of cinnamon tea. It really is good—highly recommend. Cheers, Cricket -- Cricket X. First, I notice that when I navigate using standard keyboard commands, mainly using the arrow keys, my Braille display follows along with what VoiceOver reads aloud with no issue. If I navigate using VoiceOver commands, mainly VO keys plus an arrow key, the Braille display does not generlly follow along with what VoiceOver is reading. Has anyone experienced this or knows how to fix this issue? Second, when I open PDFs in Google Chrome, I can only navigate using VO plus arrow keys. I can not use the arrow keys on their own to navigate. This means that I generally can't use the Braille display to read PDFs. Headings and links are displayed, but the resst of the text is not. How can I navigate PDFs in Google Chrome using the Braille display. Third, I can not navigate PDFs in chrome using the arrow keys and therefore can not select text. How can I select and copy text? Finally, what do you find to be the most efficient method for viewing PowerPoints? Sorry this was kind of long, but thanks in advance for your help. As a part of the agreement, Pearson has established a communications channel through which the NFB can alert Pearson to accessibility issues that blind students are experiencing. This will help Pearson to respond and remediate barriers more quickly, and in turn Pearson will keep the NFB updated on resolutions. If you encounter barriers with Pearson products this fall, please contact Valerie Yingling, legal program coordinator at the NFB, at vyingling at nfb.org. Also, Pearson has included in MyLab and other products a link to "contact the publisher." If you have usability recommendations, such as improvements to alt text, please use this link to contact Pearson directly. You can use this link to report accessibility barriers, but please also alert Valerie Yingling to any Pearson accessibility concerns.
