In keeping with that dedication, the 3S Team is developing our first Mobile Game for iOS, Anvaya Feats: Shadow Rush! Very different from your typical mobile game experience, the 3S Team is designing with Accessibility in mind. The goal is to launch a game that may be played using multiple senses (i.e. sight, hearing, motor, etc.). 3S Tech and Talent LLC is currently seeking volunteer Beta Testers for the initial version of Anvaya Feats: Shadow Rush. This new accessible mobile game is based on the epic book series, Anvaya Feats. More information on the book project can be found at: www.anvayafeats.com A little more about the game… Help the main story protagonist, Joseph, navigate the new world of magic and danger. As the story progresses, Joseph is injured and must learn to master new skills to adjust to blindness while still helping to defeat the Shadow. Players will match colors, shapes and/or sounds to collect magical runes for each mission. Joseph will build skills as he trains with his new family and Masters from the present and past. Join the cause in helping 3S bring forth a new accessible game designed with intent and purpose. 3S is actively recruiting individuals of the blind and low vision community to help test out the accessible functionality of the game. We hope to include various game players from diverse backgrounds and abilities. If you would like to volunteer your time as a Beta Tester, please send an email to LaToya V Smith, CEO of 3S Tech and Talent LLC. I found out this morning that the new course guide for my degree requires a statistics course to be completed. I am putting it off for now so that I have the semester mostly free to work hard on that course and maybe one other one. I was wondering for any students that have had to take a statistics course if Nemith Code was useful to know. I have been interested in learning it due to my enjoyment of math. I was wondering if I should start learning as soon as possible so I can use it for the Statistics course or wait a while. If anyone has learned it before also where can I go to get lessons? It could be helpful to know some basic Nemith before you start. You will probably have to learn how to do some things by hand, just so you understand how things work, but eventually, you'll probably move to using some sort of software to do the math, then it won't matter much if you know Nemith. :-) Hope this is helpful! I have a few friends who did it, and they seemed happy with it. Off the top of my head I’m thinking of a violinist who was also an English major, and another violinist who was doing math. They both seemed to manage just fine… As you probably know there isn't much going on at Harvard in terms of performance lessons, but there's definitely a music community and some amazing musicians. If you're trying to do music and something else at that kind of level I would say Harvard/NEC or Juilliard/Columbia are two great options. Hope that helps, IC Sent from my iPhone > On 19 Apr 2022, at 16:21, Julia LaGrand via NABS-L wrote: > > Hi, > I'm a senior in high school and decided to accept and defer my offer of admission at Harvard. Okay, I’ll admit, the procedures themselves aren't anything Earth-shattering, but following them is the first step to getting the NABS fam back for the ultimate reunion in New Orleans. I highly encourage you to read this email in its entirety. As a reminder, per national division guidelines, we transitioned to a calendar membership year (January-December) as of January 1, 2022. To accommodate for this change, we honored dues from both 2020 and 2021 until December 31, 2021, assuming an individual followed our application process, met the requirements for membership, and was voted into the organization by our Board of Directors. Now that we are officially out of the transition period, all prospective members, both new and returning, will need to follow our updated process to be an active member of the national student division in 2022. Keep in mind, paying dues to your state student division or state affiliate is entirely separate from applying for NABS membership. Some of you have already completed this new process in this calendar year and have been notified of your membership status; however, we are sharing this information now, in preparation for national convention, so that any members wishing to participate in elections will be able to do so come July. Important Note: Your membership application and dues payment must be received by June 30, 2022 to be eligible to participate in official business at the NABS Business Meeting at national convention. If you choose to apply for membership in-person on the day of our meeting, you will be able to participate in programming, but your individual vote will not be tallied for organizational matters that require a precise count. Dues As part of the criteria to become an active member, dues of $5 must be paid each year per our constitution (see Article VII). If you have not paid your dues since January 1, 2022, we invite you to do so through any of the following mediums: 1. PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/NABSPayments?locale.x=en_US, or send payments to @NABSPayments 2. Zelle: send payments to nabs.president at gmail.com 3. Credit/debit card: Navigate to the “donate now” link at the top of our website www.nabslink.org and clearly indicate that your payment is for your membership dues in the notes field. 4. Check: send checks to NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at PO Box 942 Durant, IA 52747. Checks must be postmarked by June 15 to insure timely receipt. Always ensure to include your name and purpose for payment when using any/all of these platforms in order to guarantee your payment is linked to your membership application. If you choose to apply for membership on the day of the meeting, rather than before June 30, we will accept cash or card at the door. Membership Application We are asking all new and returning members to also fill out the below linked membership application to ensure that we have up-to-date information on record. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScp_IYqTMPgjf3pxeRojn9UTbQW6cUXz7QkdL2S0hbzrjH0sQ/viewform?usp=sf_link Once both of these steps are complete, two scenarios are possible: 1. If you have not been voted in by the board before, meaning you did not participate in elections last year through our Swift platform or receive confirmation of your membership between the close of convention and December 31, 2021, our board will review your application and vote on your membership status based off of the attached criteria. You will be notified of the decision regardless of the outcome. 2. If you were an active member on or before December 31, 2021, you will not need to be voted in a second time, and will retain active membership status on the condition that you have completed the membership form and paid your dues for the current calendar year. You will still be notified when your form and dues have been processed. In either case, if you have been notified that you are an active member, you will then be eligible to vote and run for a position at our business meeting. If you are unsure of your membership status or have more generalized questions about the membership application process, please email Board Member Gene Kim at gene.sh.kim at gmail.com. If you have questions about payment options or want to confirm your dues were received, please email Treasurer Elizabeth Rouse at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com. There will be no additional registration process for active members attending the business meeting. We will simply have you check in at the door to receive voting materials. All other attendees will be asked to apply for membership at the door to gain entrance into the meeting. We’re looking forward to the largest gathering of blind students to date in just a few months! I am writing with an exciting call opportunity for this coming Sunday at 8:00 PM ET. Democracy Live and the National Association of Blind Students are coming together for a call on accessible voting. This is our first conversation with the organization as a national student division, but Democracy Live has a strong partnership with many of our affiliates. It is an honor to have the opportunity to speak with them. We hope to make this an introductory meeting where Democracy Live will learn about NABS and the other way around. This meeting will be about 45 minutes - 1 hour. We will start with introductions from members of Democracy Live and members of NABS. Next, Melissa Carney will present a demonstration of Democracy Live's accessible, remote ballot transmission technology. The demonstration will show how anyone, especially people with disabilities or disenfranchised voters, can remotely and securely receive, mark a ballot, and return it. After that, there will be time for questions, comments, feedback, and enhancing our relationship. About Democracy Live: Founded in 2007, Democracy Live technologies have been deployed in 4,000 elections, serving over 10 million voters in 2,500 jurisdictions and 25 states. In partnership with Amazon and Microsoft, Democracy Live is the largest provider of cloud and tablet-based voting technologies in the U.S. Democracy Live has been selected by both the Department of Defense and the U.S. State Department for our remote, accessible balloting technologies. A founding member of the Department of Homeland Security sponsored Elections Coordinating Council, Democracy Live is a leading authority on secure voting technologies. Awarded the “2019 Accessibility in Voting Award” presented at the United Nations, Democracy Live technologies have been awarded funding by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Elections Assistance Commission to assist voters with disabilities. Please see the below message from our Governmental Affairs team, and let me know if you have questions/would like to contribute. "We are collecting quotes regarding the Access Technology Affordability Act. We plan to use some of these quotes in emails to Congressional staff. Here are some examples: John Smith of Maryland said, "I use my refreshable Braille display for work every day. If I did not have this technology, it would dramatically impact my employment." Tom Smith of North Dakota said, "I cannot afford screen reading software and without this accessibility software, I cannot search for a job." Mary Smith of Oklahoma said, "I collect SSI but look forward to the day when I am working. The problem is I cannot afford the specialized tools needed to look for and apply for employment." As you can see we are looking for relatively short quotes-- one to two sentences. The quotes need to be attributed to an actual person. There is a slight possibility that a member of Congress will ask to speak to the person. We are hoping to get quotes from people who reside in both states that would typically be considered more progressive and more conservative. We would also like quotes that illustrate that lack of technology is resulting in difficulty in obtaining and retaining employment. We are hoping to get these quotes back this week. If you know someone who could provide a relevant quote, please reach out to them. All quotes should be send to me, Jeff Kaloc, at jkaloc at nfb.org ." The 2022-23 Missouri Association of Blind Students Board -- The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
