The National Federation of the Blind of SC is inviting everyone to movie night for the audio described movie A Star Is Born from 2018. Be sure to join us on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 8:00 PM eastern using the below Zoom information. More about the movie is below the Zoom information and we hope to see you on Friday! If you have any suggestions about upcoming movies to show, please send them to Steve Cook at cookcafe at sc.rr.com . Coming on Friday, September 2, 2022 at 8:00 PM Eastern is the movie American Underdog, the Kurt Werner Story in honor of football season starting! Rated: R Run Time 2 hours and 16 minutes Jackson "Jack" Maine (43 years old), a famous country rock singer privately battling an alcohol and drug addiction, plays a concert. His main support is Bobby, his manager and older half-brother. After a show, Jack goes out for drinks and visits a drag bar where he witnesses a tribute performance to Édith Piaf by Ally (31 years old), who works as a waitress and singer-songwriter. Jack is amazed by her performance, and they spend the night talking to each other, where Ally discusses her unsuccessful efforts in pursuing a professional music career. Ally shares with Jack some lyrics she has been working on, and he tells her she is a talented songwriter and should perform her own material. Jack invites Ally to his next show. Despite her initial refusal, she attends and, with Jack's encouragement, sings "Shallow" on stage with him. Jack invites Ally to go on tour with him, and they form a romantic relationship. In Arizona, Ally and Jack visit the ranch where Jack grew up and where his father is buried, only to find that Bobby had sold the land, and it was converted to a wind farm. Angered at his betrayal, Jack punches Bobby, who subsequently quits as his manager. Before doing so, Bobby reveals that he did inform Jack about the sale, but Jack was too inebriated to notice. While on tour, Ally meets Rez, a record producer who offers her a contract. Although visibly bothered, Jack still supports her decision. Rez refocuses Ally away from country music and towards pop. Jack misses one of Ally's performances after he passes out drunk in public; he recovers at the home of his best friend George "Noodles" Stone, and later makes up with Ally. There he proposes to Ally with an impromptu ring made from a loop of a guitar string, and they are married that same day at a church ministered by a relative of Noodles. During Ally's performance on Saturday Night Live, Bobby reconciles with Jack. Later, Ally and an inebriated Jack have a fight about Ally's growing artistic success. Jack drunkenly criticizes Ally's new image and music. Her success appears to be outpacing his own recent decline in popularity. By comparison, Ally is nominated for three Grammy Awards. At the Grammys, a visibly intoxicated Jack performs in a tribute to Roy Orbison and, later in the evening, Ally wins the Best New Artist award. When she goes up on stage to receive her award, a still inebriated Jack staggers up to her, where he publicly wets himself and passes out. Ally's father, Lorenzo, berates a semi-conscious Jack, while Ally attempts to help Jack sober up. Jack joins a rehabilitation program shortly thereafter. While recovering in rehab for about two months, Jack discloses to his counselor that he tried to commit suicide by hanging at 12 years old. He also mentions that he has hearing problems due to tinnitus, which has been getting worse. Jack tearfully apologizes to Ally for his behavior. While returning home, Jack admits to Bobby that it was him he idolised and not their father. Ally asks Rez to bring Jack to perform with her European tour, and Rez refuses, prompting Ally to cancel the remainder of the tour so she can care for Jack. Later, Rez arrives at their home to await Ally; while waiting, Rez confronts Jack and accuses him of nearly ruining Ally's career and stating that Jack will certainly relapse again. That evening, Ally lies to Jack and tells him that her record label has canceled her tour so she can focus on her second album. Jack promises that he will come to her concert that night, but after Ally leaves, he hangs himself in their garage. Ally, grief-stricken and inconsolable after Jack's suicide, is visited by Bobby, who tells her that the suicide was Jack's own fault and not hers. The closing scenes reveal a flashback of Jack working on a song about his love for Ally, which he never finished writing. Ally sings this song as a tribute to Jack, introducing herself for the first time as Ally Maine. The film ends with a close-up of teary-eyed Ally looking up to the heavens. Cast Bradley Cooper as Jackson "Jack" Maine, an established singer-songwriter and alcoholic. He is Ally's mentor and husband. Lady Gaga as Ally Maine, a singer-songwriter who is discovered by Jack and later becomes his wife. Sam Elliott as Bobby Maine, Jack's older half-brother and manager. Rafi Gavron as Rez Gavron, a music producer and Ally's manager. Andrew Dice Clay as Lorenzo, Ally's father. Anthony Ramos as Ramon, Ally's friend. Dave Chappelle as George "Noodles" Stone, a retired musician and Jack's best friend. Drena De Niro as Paulette Stone, Noodles's wife. Greg Grunberg as Phil, Jack's driver. Additionally, Shangela appears as the drag bar MC, Willam Belli as drag queen Emerald, and Ron Rifkin as Jackson's rehab therapist Carl. Rebecca Field portrays Gail, while Michael Harney portrays Wolfie, a friend of Lorenzo. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real appear as Jackson's band, Eddie Griffin appears as a local preacher and Luenell appears as a cashier. Marlon Williams, Brandi Carlile, Alec Baldwin, Halsey and Don Roy King cameo as themselves. I can say from experience that, frankly, concussions suck. Along with blindness, I'm also epileptic, and a few of my seizures have also resulted in mild concussions. As I've talked with people who have had concussions as a result of seizures, I've found that I had the same effects that sighted people in the same situation had—nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, etc. Keep in mind that the effects of concussions are different depending on how bad the concussion was and what caused it, and my eyes never do anything during a seizure or a concussion because I'm totally blind. If there are any effects of a concussion that have to do with vision, that could be a factor for low-vision people that wasn't a factor for me. I hope that helps, and—more importantly—feel better soon! Chris Nusbaum > On Aug 1, 2022, at 6:10 PM, Noah Cook via NABS-L wrote: > > Hi, > > I’m sorry if this is off topic. We have been trying to improve our paratransit service since my chapter was founded in 2015. The sad fact is that our local government (who controls the budget) doesn’t agree that public transportation is a vital and necessary part of our county’s economy. We found that it is a struggle that will continue as long as we need the service; don’t give up! We are persistent! I worked with my university's disability service office to submit the paperwork necessary for requesting the accommodations. When I requested the accommodations, I was also able to request practice materials in Braille. I believe you have an option to take the GRE using Braille or using an accessible computerized version. I took the former and have no experience with the latter. I was able to receive the Braille practice materials from the ETS and used those to prepare. I recall also using some practice books from Bookshare, especially for the verbal part. Searching for sample writing prompts and simulating the test experience to practice writing essays using those prompts was also quite helpful. I am sure folks who have taken the exam more recently can give more advice; hope this is something you can get started with. But what does it really mean to be an active member of NABS? What initiatives can we take to help active members feel like they are part of both a lovingly supportive family and expertly resourced network of blind students? How can we welcome new members and make sure they get plugged in to all that NABS has to offer? Join the Membership Committee on Sunday, August 21 at 8 PM EST to begin brainstorming answers to these questions, share your personal experiences being part of the NFB (whether new or seasoned), and meet committee leadership. I am taking a class titled “Movement for Musical Theatre”. It is taught by a theatre professor, but is labeled as a dance class. I am taking it because I need 2 credits of a PE or dance this semester, and it fits best with my schedule. I’ve never taken a dance or theatre class, so any advice would be appreciated. Also, is there anything in particular I should request that Disability Services add to my accommodation letter. Most of my accommodations are for academics. Since I'm getting my PhD in education leadership, I'm immersed in all the talk about trends in higher education on a daily basis, so I want to share this: Yes, there was definitely a push to waive the standardized testing requirements for undergraduate and graduate programs during the pandemic, but there had already been a movement for programs and universities to divorce themselves from standardized testing. This movement appears to be continuing to live on after the pandemic lockdowns. It has been done in the name of equity. Of course, in higher education, when we talk about equity, it almost never means equity for people with disabilities, but it can sometimes create a positive spillover effect on us. Many universities have been waiving the standardized testing requirements because people from underrepresented racial minorities were not faring as well as more privileged groups, and they wanted to do a better job of embracing DEI principles in their admissions processes. Additionally, there is very little correlation between standardized test scores and academic success, so they are not good predictors. Prestige in higher education is still largely rooted in who institutions exclude, so barriers to admission like standardized testing will still live on. If you can take the GRE, I think that's great. The ability to go to graduate school without taking the GRE will continue to be a possibility at many of the institutions that waived it for the pandemic. I work as a peer mentor through an on campus job. I have the same role in a new department, which is why I wanted to bring this up. In the previous department, the mentors helped out at events, setting up papers, zoom for virtual attendees, and other things. So I would say that I want to help and they would say okay, however I would be standing or sitting arround awkwardly, while they asked a sighted coworker to point out the printed forms on the tables for attendees to fill out. The coworker who was helping was doing my work, even though she wasn’t paid. She gets along so well with everyone on the team. At an event the other day, the coworker was asked to sit with me and direct the attandees to fill out the papers. I sat there, did nothing, and only jumped in when reminding them to fill out name tags. During the event, there was a zoom issue and they immediately asked the sighted coworker. By the way, the sighted coworker was not working that day, but loves to join events. In the new department, I want to participate in event planning and hosting workshops, however I’m worried that in this part of the peer mentor role, there a strong emphasis in collaboration. I would like to know how you be as involved? I want more than giving out ideas and everyone treating me like what I’m saying is the most amazing thing. I don’t want to run in to a situation where I’m not sure what to do. I’m open to any suggestions and feedback. Thank You Elizabeth Sent from my iPhone From buhrow at nfbcal.org Sat Aug 20 20:05:55 2022 From: buhrow at nfbcal.org (Brian Buhrow) Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2022 13:05:55 -0700 Subject: [NABS-L] Barriers At Work In-Reply-To: <9606ED93-A92F-460D-B5B0-46588FC7B0FE@gmail.com> Message-ID: <202208202005.27KK5t2o017356@nfbcal.org> hello. If you're a braille user and if the forms you're handing out are standardized, I'd suggest making braille labels you can place under the forms you're handing out so that when you're directing folks, you actually know which forms are where on the table. The reason I mention standardized forms is because you can make these labels in advance of the meetings and re-use them for different meetings. What you're asking is how to get yourself included in your groups as an equal peer. This is not an easy problem to fix in many situations. However, the way I've found to work around the issue in many situations is to figure out where my colleague's knowledge is weakest and then fillin that gap. It may be that, for example, while your colleagues know what forms need to be completed, they're les familiar with the questions on the form and how they should be answered. If you learn how to complete those forms and can help visitors complete them more quickly and accurately, then you're contributing to the overall operation of the meeting. I can tell you I've been in your situation many times and it's often awkward, but I can also tell you that by spending some time thinking about the particulars of those awkward situations, I've learned that there is usually a place where I can contribute something useful to the proceedings. For example, for some years, I participated in a day-long conference where food was prepared and served for the attendees. The person in charge of the kitchen was not comfortable with my help in the kitchen, however, I determined I was going to serve in some useful capacity in that kitchen. I noticed that no one liked doing the dishes, so, I began washing dishes without asking permission. As I stacked the clean dishes on the counter, people began bringing me new things to wash and showing me where to put the clean dishes away. And, soon, I was the primary dishwasher; not the most glamorous of jobs, but certainly vital to the smooth operation of the kitchen. Good luck and keep thinking and asking about the issue; over time, it gets easier, even if the problem never entirely goes away. -Brian From hunterkuester2 at gmail.com Sun Aug 21 14:37:19 2022 From: hunterkuester2 at gmail.com (Hunter Kuester) Date: Sun, 21 Aug 2022 09:37:19 -0500 Subject: [NABS-L] Hut, hut, Hike! I took a ballet course last year, run by a blind teacher. Run an Internet search for Dark Room Ballet or Darkroom Ballet. (I can't remember if the dark room is two words or one). Without knowing the teaching style, it's hard to suggest accomodations apart from the obvious like describing the movements with words whilst carrying out actions. I am a singer but I have been in productions where movement is required. Choreographers have always been extremely helpful, either adapting movements to accomodate what I can and can't do and showing me how, when and where to do things. Also, take into account, your own learning style. Do you learn movements best by listening or do you get more from a touch based approach. I only get some much by listening and I need to feel the person's arms, legs and so on, to grasp the style of movement, rather than just what is being done. There are so mamy ways someone can lift their arm, for example. Not just speed but smooth, fluid, spiky etc. That would be all just noise to me but feeling the person move would make it all click. Sorry this is so long. Best of luck with your course. Very best wishes, Sandra. I grew up taking dance corses and as my vision continued to deteriorate, I had to figure out different ways to adapt. I found that for classes where there was singular synchronized movement, the best way was if I had a TA be with me in class to help me go over the combinations. If the class was dance terminology heavy, I would have the TA go over all the movement correlating to the words and then be able to follow along in class as I knew what the Professor meant when she called out the terms. For partner work dances or classes, I would do a similar approach in having a TA to be my partner and we would work together to get all the movement down. I have taken classes in ballroom, ballet, modern, and classical, and have done huge dance numbers in my HS musicals and have just joined a dance team at my school, so if you have any questions, please reach out!! My name is Dana Mohsen, and I'm a non-U.S. citizen who is visually impaired. I am going into my senior year of high school, and I'm interested in pursuing a Batchelers degree in data science in the U.S. I'd like to know, what are some of the challenges students face pursuing this degree? What are some ways you view large quantities of data? How do you "skim" through data to quicken the process of understanding a data set? I guess sighted people call it "eye-balling" Thank you so much in advance. Sincerely Dana Mohsen From manahiljafri at gmail.com Fri Aug 26 18:31:04 2022 From: manahiljafri at gmail.com (Manahil Jafri) Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2022 14:31:04 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Question About Studying Data Science in College In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Dana, I want to start off by saying welcome! We are so excited to have you be a part of our NABS community and hope you will stick around! I love the question you proposed about studying Data Science as I had similar concerns when starting my own degree. This concept of “eyeballing” is one that I’ve struggled to completely figure out, so I am curious to hear the other responses on the list. I do find myself, assuming that the data set your working with is cleaned, to just immediately start running my regression models or other analysis techniques to figure out what the data is saying, rather than trying to eyeball and have a general idea. The issue that may come up is that without overviewing your data, you can’t use your general intuition to determine whether your model is seemingly correct, however, I usually find myself working backwards and running my model, and then if I don’t feel like it’s right, I go tiresly through the data sheet to scope for possible outliers or anything that could possibly skew my results. If your working with a uncleaned dataset, that will pose more issues, but I found that after I methodically work to clean it, I can just run my model and use my prior knowledge on the topic to guide my intuition. I have also found with more qualitative results, I just incessantly press the down arrow on my excel sheet to try to gain a general idea of survey responses, though this may not be completely viable for comprehension for larger data sets, it does give you a general idea of what your results should be before you run your models. Though I’m not directly majoring in data science, my major requires a lot of data science corses so if you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out! I hope this was some what helpful haha. Though programs like STATA, SAS, and NATLAB have been successfully used by blind students, they are very laborious to operate and have multiple steps that I personally find frustrating and inefficient. A lot of modeling can indeed be done on Excel, which is great because it’s intuitively very accessible, but direct programs such as R and Tableau I have found to be the easiest to use and the most straightforward. Message-ID: Hi all, Usually when you encounter an email from me, it is either about our content creation committee meetings, or NABS Now podcast. Although this email is indeed about a podcast, it is not NABS Now, but rather the Nation’s Blind Podcast - produced by the National Office of the NFB. This episode is an interview with 2022 Dr. Jacob Bolotin award winner, Caroline Karbowski. Carolina is a recent graduate from the Ohio State University and proud board member of the Ohio Association of Blind Students. She is truly incredible, founding and growing a non-profit that has reached blind people across the globe, giving people access to equitable education and information through 3D printed tactile models. I encourage you to take a few minutes out of your day to listen to the work Carolina has been doing, as I truly believe she deserves all the praise. Although not specifically designed for blind people, I suggest looking at Tupperware products. Many of them are tactil enough that they can be used easily without sight. For example, they used to have a full set of measuring cups which had the sizes embossed in raised lettering on them. I do not know if they still have those particular cups, but it's worth checking them out; you may find other bits of kitchenware that are extremely accessible and useful. -thanks -Brian From stacie.leap at gmail.com Mon Aug 29 23:03:44 2022 From: stacie.leap at gmail.com (Stacie Leap) Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2022 19:03:44 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Introduction to NVDA - Tuesdays at 7pm starting September Message-ID: *Introduction to NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access)* Collaborated Sponsored ship by the Pennsylvania Organization of Parents of Blind Children and the Blind Parents Group with the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania *Facilitator:* Chris Westbrook *Dates:* Tuesdays, starting September 6, 2022 for 9 weeks *Time:* 7pM to 8PM ET *Location:* Virtually through Zoom Price: Free If you wish to join in, please email Stacie Leap at stacie.leap at gmail.com with the following information: Full Name, Email Address, Phone Number, and your proficiency level with NVDA( beginner, intermediate, advanced, etc.) NVDA is a free screen reading software for blind and visually impaired people to use in order to navigate the digital world. He makes a lifelong commitment to become a Super Bowl and MVP quarterback. Several years later, Kurt is playing his fifth year for the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Panthers football team with coach Terry Allen. Allen threatens to bench Warner after repeatedly not staying in the pocket after dropping back to pass, which would effectively end Warner's NFL dream. After a brutal practice following the coach's orders, Kurt continues to be the starter and his numbers climb to a point where he has a chance at the Draft. Meanwhile, Kurt becomes attracted to a woman he sees dancing at a country bar. He decides to learn how to dance to impress her. He finds out her name is Brenda and that she is a single mom with two kids and is a nursing student struggling financially. Even though she doesn't think it will work out, Kurt becomes persistent and walks three miles to her house to get her number and finds out that she was a Marine corporal and that her son is disabled. He instantly bonds with the children and they decide to give it a try. With his last season of college football over, Kurt anxiously awaits the draft. He doesn't get picked and wonders why God gave him a dream that he would never obtain. He later finds out that the Green Bay Packers gave him the chance to try out. The tryout goes badly and Kurt goes home dejected. Becoming homeless, he moves in with Brenda and lives in the basement. He takes a job at a Hy-Vee grocery store, working nights stocking shelves. He finds out that success is not found on the football field, but how one acts when confronted with disappointments. Brenda's parents sell the house and move to another state, putting them in a tough situation, and the couple continue to struggle. At one point, their car runs out of gas and Kurt walks several miles in a blizzard to get to the nearest gas station. Kurt gets approached by Jim Foster, who offers him the quarterback position for the Arena Football League's Iowa Barnstormers. Kurt agrees after he finds that no one in the NFL is interested in him. Arena football is different as it is smaller and much more fast paced. He loses his first game but wins the next game. Kurt and Brenda's relationship is strained from the long commute, and they briefly break up. Brenda's parents are killed in a tornado and she and Kurt decide to get back together. They get married and Kurt finishes the 1996 Arena Football League season with the Iowa Barnstormers in ArenaBowl X, a heart-breaking loss in when his completed pass on the last play of the game comes up one yard short of the end zone. Kurt is given another chance when he gets invited to a tryout by the St. Louis Rams. He doesn't think he will make it as he is having to re-adjust to normal football and the offensive coordinator, Mike Martz, berates him relentlessly for every mistake. The head coach, Dick Vermeil, believes in him and tells Kurt he made the team. When starting quarterback Trent Green goes down with an injury in the 1999 NFL preseason, Kurt eventually becomes the starting quarterback. In his first game, Kurt and the Rams face a strong Baltimore Ravens defense led by linebacker Ray Lewis. After a turnover on his first drive, Kurt picks the Ravens defense apart. With a 27-10 lead, the Rams go into victory formation, and Warner takes a knee to end the game. He immediately gives thanks to God for the opportunity and kisses Brenda in the stands. The Rams would post a 13-3 record that season and become known as The Greatest Show on Turf because of the high-powered offense led by Warner. The Rams would go on to defeat the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV. During the game, Kurt would throw the most passing yards in a Super Bowl, breaking Joe Montana's record. Doing so helped him win Super Bowl MVP and be crowned the NFL MVP, making him the first undrafted player to be named either of those in NFL history. The credits show that he would play in two other Super Bowls, become enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017, and he and Brenda continue to live happily married with seven children.
