Here is some information about it. I am signing and sharing, and hope that you do as well. There is a court case in California that could have a significant impact on blind students, as well as disabled people in general. Blind students at the Los Angelas Community College District have sued for accessible materials, and won both at the district court and appeals court email. Now the community college district is planning to take the case to the Suppreme Court. I am summarizing an email that someone else sent me about the case, but here is a link to more information. https://dredf.org/2021/12/16/payan-v-laccd-explainer/ Here is a link to a petition encouraging the college to not appeal to the Supreme Court. https://form.jotform.com/220128109863150 Mikayla From nspohn0 at gmail.com Wed Feb 2 23:01:10 2022 From: nspohn0 at gmail.com (nspohn0 at gmail.com) Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2022 18:01:10 -0500 Subject: [NABS-L] Petition related to accessibility in college In-Reply-To: <3D18213C-FB72-4B2D-AE93-85EC0B3F3D08@icloud.com> References: <3D18213C-FB72-4B2D-AE93-85EC0B3F3D08@icloud.com> Message-ID: <002d01d81888$c5b482b0$511d8810$@gmail.com> So I guess it sounds like the blind students won, but the college is trying to appeal and say that their actions were not "discriminatory"? I think it is a very small chance that the case gets to the Supreme Court because a very small percentage of cases that are given to the Supreme Court actually get tried. I think maybe as a blind community we could discuss here if the case should go to the Supreme Court, but personally, I do not think we have anything to worry about. I doubt the case will be overturned in favor of the college. -----Original Message----- From: NABS-L On Behalf Of Mikayla Gephart via NABS-L Sent: Wednesday, February 2, 2022 5:48 PM To: National Association of Blind Students mailing list Cc: Mikayla Gephart Subject: [NABS-L] Petition related to accessibility in college Hi, I was recently informed about a petition related to accessibility and college. Do you have plans on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 8:00 PM Eastern? If not come and join the National Federation of the Blind of Sc for a presentation of the movie 42! All of the movies that we show are audio described. The Zoom information to join us is below the information pertaining to the movie. In 1945, sportswriter Wendell Smith suggests that Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey consider Jackie Robinson as the black ballplayer Rickey is looking for. Robinson and his team, the Kansas City Monarchs, stop by a gas station. When the attendant refuses Robinson entry to the washroom, Robinson says they will find another station at which to fill up the team bus, and the attendant relents. As Robinson steps out, a scout for the Dodgers sent by Rickey approaches him and invites him to Brooklyn. He is offered a $600 per month contract and a $3,500 signing bonus, which Robinson accepts after being warned by Rickey that he must control his temper if he wants to play. Robinson proposes to his girlfriend, Rachel, by phone and she accepts. During spring training, Robinson earns a roster spot with the Montreal Royals, the AAA affiliate of the Brooklyn farm system. After a great season there and spring training in Panama, he advances to the Dodgers. Many of the players soon sign a petition, stating they refuse to play with Robinson, but manager Leo Durocher insists Robinson will play with the main team, and they relent. When Durocher is suspended by Happy Chandler, the Commissioner of Baseball, for actions in his personal life, leaving the Dodgers without a manager to start the regular season, Burt Shotton agrees to manage the team. In a game against the Philadelphia Phillies, manager Ben Chapman taunts Robinson, causing him to go back to the dugout and smash his bat out of frustration. With encouragement from Rickey, Robinson then returns to the field and hits a single, steals second base and advances to third on a throwing error, and scores the winning run. When Chapman's behavior toward Robinson generates bad press for the team, Phillies' general manager Herb Pennock requires him to pose with Robinson for newspapers and magazine photos prior to the next game between the two teams. Later, Robinson's teammate Pee Wee Reese comes to understand what kind of pressure Robinson is facing, and makes a public show of solidarity, standing with his arm around Robinson's shoulders before a hostile crowd at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, silencing them. In a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Enos Slaughter "accidentally" spikes Robinson on the back of the leg with his cleats while running to first base. Robinson's home run against Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Fritz Ostermueller, who had earlier hit him in the head, helps clinch the National League pennant for the Dodgers, sending them to the World Series. A series of texts are shown in the epilogue of the film regarding Robinson and his teammates future involvements as well as others. A $100,000 donation from Anthem Blue Cross to The Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University has established a new scholarship fund to support education-related expenses for students with disabilities who have committed to future healthcare work, whether as direct healthcare practitioners or working in the field of health justice. This initiative is part of Anthem’s broader commitment to address California’s healthcare worker shortage and to close the gap in health disparities across the state. “Anthem Blue Cross has made a commitment to identifying California-specific health disparities and partnering to introduce solutions that create more equitable healthcare experiences, enhance access to care and services, and improve health outcomes,” said Les Ybarra, President of Anthem Blue Cross’s Medi-Cal health plan. “For decades, Anthem has been pioneering solutions to usher in a new era of healthcare that works better for everyone, and we are pleased for the opportunity to work with the Longmore Institute on Disability, to not only help students fulfill their higher education goals, but to also develop a pipeline of healthcare leaders, with disabilities, to transform healthcare delivery through a person-centered approach.” The Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University studies and showcases disabled people's experiences to revolutionize social views. Through public education, scholarship and cultural events, the Longmore Institute shares disability history and theory, promotes critical thinking, and builds a broader community. At the center of this work, is an effort to challenge implicit bias, as too often people’s disabilities are assumed to signal only a deficit and a pathological problem to be cured. Both the field of disability studies and the disability rights and justice movements have repeatedly called out the medical profession as a central site in which negative assumptions of disability grow and spread. Supporting Anthem’s important vision to see more disabled people in healthcare and medicine will have a profound impact to help overturn implicit bias from the inside, while creating new opportunities for students who would not otherwise be able to afford the costs of education.  Director of the Longmore Institute, Catherine Kudlick, shared, “As future health-care providers, SF State students are the perfect ones to change thinking and conversations right where it matters most: at the core of our healthcare system. Imagine a world where doctors and other health workers believed living with a disability brought a valuable new perspective for everyone?” Students interested in applying should visit SFSU’s AcademicWorks site, where they will be able to learn more and submit their application in February 2022 for support starting Fall 2022: https://sfsu.academicworks.com/ Save the Date: Cafe Crip [Cafe Crip, details as below, includes two green mugs, one with the word "cafe" and the other with "crip," each surrounded by a heart] Cafe Crip, details as below, image includes two green mugs, one with the word "cafe" and the other with "crip," each surrounded by a heart Save the date! Keep your hand raised if you wish people would make the material professors share via Zoom readily accessible so that you can read it in real-time the same as your sighted peers. Pneuma Solutions has come up with a way for you to be able to read PowerPoints and other material with the same ease as reading this post. It's called Scribe for Meetings, and in brief, it is a means for your universities to use a special link to upload their content and make it intuitively available to you. Best of all, when you access the material, you can choose to save the information in one of a handful of special formats for later perusal. The company has started with Zoom but plans to make the service available on other platforms soon, including Microsoft Teams. If this is something you think could benefit you and fellow blind students on your campus, please click the link below to access various templates to make the right people aware of your needs. We think they'll find it as easy to incorporate as it will be for you to get access to the information you need at the time you want. https://pneumasolutions.com/products/scribe-for-meetings-self-advocacy-kit/ Do you have questions? We have an extensive FAQ on the website, but if you'd like to connect with someone directly, please email: info at pneumasolutions.com. And please help us share information about this and our other services with people you think could benefit from them. In full disclosure, Pneuma Solutions is one of my freelance clients. I've known the CEO for years now and can vouch for his and his team's devotion to equal education and access. My only regret is that the technology was not available when I was working my way through school. They're doing a lot of great things over there. We didn't even get into the cloud-based document scanning service, but check out their website when you have a moment and learn about the various tools that could make your college journey just a little bit easier. https://pneumasolutions.com/ Take care, Joe Orozco -- Joe Orozco: Your Message, My Mission https://joeorozco.com/services/ From eschlenker at cox.net Sun Feb 6 15:29:07 2022 From: eschlenker at cox.net (Emily Schlenker) Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2022 09:29:07 -0600 Subject: [NABS-L] A Valuable Set of Tools for Blind Students In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <078183CE-F3F8-48E9-AFB7-B1BDCEBB093E@cox.net> Jo, this is excellent! I finally set my appointment for the accommodation request. I will be interviewed on Friday. I start classes on March 21, 2022. So, the college is getting a new website, and I am disappointed to say, that the accessibility of the website is, well, quite accessible, but needs a lot of work. I have written a letter to the manager, and he is going to forward my concerns to the web developers. You may feel free to send me feedback of the accessibility issues that you found on the college website as well. "Dear Charles, As I said in the phone call earlier today, the accessibility of the Georgia Military College website, located at https://www.gmc.edu is not completely accessible. I believe that accessibility is the top priority for this website. Here is some examples of issues that I have found. This will be in a list format. * The menu button is not labeled. This is the first menu button on the page. The screen-reader, NVDA only says, "Button Collapsed." I am using Google Chrome for Windows. * All of the links to social media in the footer area is not labeled. The screen-reader only says, "Link, link, link." * There is unlabeled images (for screen-readers) that can't be recognized. This is called ALT text, or alternative text. The people who are developing this website will probably learn more about this. As a concerned student, I believe that making this website accessible from the ground up is the best way to go. In my opinion, if you or a contractor is going to make the website accessible, I would recommend making it from the start. Also, other materials, such as emails, PDF announcements/files, documents, etc., must be accessible. I have attached some resources for the college to improve website accessibility/functionality. I have also CCED Elaine Martin in this email as well. If you have any questions, you may email me at any time. Once I think of more resources, I'll send you guys an updated file. Thank you. When I expressed similar concerns to my college during my freshman year, I ended up with a paid position with their communications and marketing department, which oversees their public-facing Web site, as their go-to person on accessibility. As part of that work, I tested all their pages in detail and wrote reports which were sent to the developer and Web designer, both of whom also worked with me in the office to fix the problems in real time. I know you have some background in Web development, which adds a level of expertise to the position that I could not offer. Thank you. Commitment to Health and Safety The YES Summer Academy is, and will continue to be, in strict accordance with local, state and Center for Disease Control recommendations and guidelines. We are continually monitoring the situation as the health and safety of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Below are some of the actions we are taking to minimize risk and some of the measures to help ensure safety and health. We will follow the latest guidelines and continue to let the community know well in advance of the latest safety protocols. Anyone who is sick or was sick with COVID-19 or recently in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the previous 10 days including staff, students, and families will not be permitted to enter the program areas of LightHouse headquarters Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC). * We ask that staff, volunteers, students, and families be on the lookout for symptoms of COVID-19, which include fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, and loss of taste or smell. Call a medical professional if you think you or a family member is sick. We appreciate your assistance with helping us protect the health of all students by not putting others at risk * IN accordance with San Francisco health and safety guidelines, we will require all participants to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (this includes first and second doses (unless receiving Johnson and Johnson), as well as a booster vaccine). All participants upon entering our program spaces will be required to fill out a same-day health questionnaire and have their temperature taken. * We will limit the number of items that are shared or touched between students and staff i.e., providing individual supplies to each participant, using disposable utensils, pre-packaged boxes for food, etc. * We will promote healthy hygiene practices by teaching participants the importance of, and the requirement for, hand washing, wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE), and appropriate awareness of spatial distancing (6-feet distance). Everyone must wear a face covering during all indoor group activities. * All participants who have been selected to attend the YES Academy are required to complete and return a Youth Conduct and Expectations Agreement around personal and community responsibilities to maintain a safe, welcoming, and productive environment. * Once students and staff have arrived and the YES Academy begins, we will keep the session closed to visitors, short-term volunteers, and guests to keep the cohort insulated. If a participant may get sick during the program, we have identified an area where they can rest, be supervised, and safely isolate from others. We will communicate with families or guardians directly and, if necessary, arrange for the student to be taken to a healthcare facility for further medical care. The Zoom conference link will be the standard NABS Zoom link shown at the bottom of this message. The call will occur at 9 PM EST through 10 PM EST on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Topics will be of interest for blind students in middle school, high school, college and graduate school and professionals. Parents of blind school-aged children and educators are also welcome. Currently, the scheduled speakers, topics, talk descriptions, and speaker introductions, are: Speaker: Venkatesh Chari Title: the use of the Graphiti Tactile Graphic Display for the study of STEM subjects Description: The Graphiti represents a breakthrough in non-visual access to dynamic graphical information such as charts, drawings, flowcharts, floorplans, images and photographs, through an array of moving pins without the need for specialized software. A blind user is now able to view and create graphics in digital form simply by drawing with her finger, store them into a computing device, review and edit them, and exchange such graphics with others. With its ability to interface with computers, phones and equipment such as microscopes and telescopes, the Graphiti provides instant tactile access to all forms of graphical information. In the classroom, the Graphiti provides the ability to access textbooks with graphical material. It also enables blind students to actively participate in inclusive classrooms and for the first time, visualize the smartboards used in mainstream classrooms. Practical applications of the Graphiti in STEM education and scientific research will also be discussed. Speaker Introduction: With a background in Electrical Engineering, Venkatesh Chari has worked for over 25 years in the development of technologies involved in mobile and assistive technology products, in roles spanning engineering, management and strategic marketing. At Orbit Research, his work has included the development of the Orbit Reader 20, the world's first affordable refreshable braille display and the Graphiti Interactive Tactile Graphic Display. Speaker: Alfred D'Agostino Title: The Challenges That Students and Professionals Will Face in Chemistry, and How to Overcome Them Description: To advance through the undergraduate chemistry curriculum or be successful in taking chemistry classroom, online and laboratory instruction to support other programs, it is necessary to learn via symbolic, visual, and spatial means. This is a difficult, but not insurmountable obstacle for blind and low-vision students and professionals. In this presentation, the following will be discussed: What to expect in the chemistry curriculum; How to anticipate technology needs; Preparing a learning strategy; How to locate resources; and how to be an advocate and realize success. Speaker Introduction: Dr. Alfred D'Agostino's personal and professional activities overlap his interest in promoting accessibility in science lab instruction for blind/ low-vision (BLV) students. Dr. D'Agostino non-visually conducts his teaching and professional activities. In September 2021, he published Accessible Teaching and Learning in the Undergraduate Chemistry Course and Laboratory for Blind and Low-Vision Student in the Journal of Chemical Education. He has facilitated 'hands-on' chemistry experiments for college students and adults at the National Federation of the Blind's Louisiana Center for the Blind and at the Colorado Center for the blind using 'speech-enabled' probe ware. In 2022, Professor D'Agostino will present a Symposium at the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education hosted by the American Chemical Society titled Including the Blind in Chemistry -Making Learning and Instruction Accessible. At conferences where he presents to faculty colleagues, he highlights the access technologies (including tactile graphics) that can assist BLV students in doing independent work in the least restrictive learning environment. Dr. D'Agostino is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, has served as a chemistry department chairperson, has taught analytical and physical chemistry at the graduate level at various institutions (he has graduated 2 Ph.D. students), routinely gives conference presentations, is involved in chemical education research, and currently teaches at the undergraduate level. His research has been in surface science and interface analysis. His accomplishments include: a post-doctoral fellowship at Lawrence Berkely Laboratory, Faculty Research Fellow with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research at Wright Laboratory, Faculty Research Fellow at NASA's John Glenn Research Center and at the Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. D'Agostino was also Visiting Research Professor of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University where his work was supported via a National Science Foundation grant. Speaker: Charles Vanek Title: From Entry Level to Senior Leader, perspectives on being blind in Corporate America Description: Get insightful perspectives as a blind individual in a corporate setting. From what to expect in interviews through growing your career. As well as what I wish I had done better. You'll find that the most important aspect of any job is managing expectations, including your own. Speaker Introduction: Charles Vanek has over 20 years of experience in Software Engineering with the majority of that time being in management. He started at a small company, eWatch, in 2000 as an entry-level data collection & processing manager and has grown to the position of Senior Director of Engineering for Cision's Distribution platform. Charles has led ground up custom-built application development to on-boarding SaaS systems such as Salesforce.com. In his career he's found that putting people first leads to the best outcomes for the products produced but has also come to acknowledge & balance the needs of businesses in competitive industries on the global stage. As such, I have found my phone's compass app to be indispensable, giving me confidence when the direction I think I am facing matches its reading and helping me correct when I am off. However, this is somewhat cumbersome to do. I have a cane in my hand, and I need to stop, whip out my iPhone on which the compass app is open, touch the correct part of the screen to hear my direction, and then put it back in my pocket. This is a simple set of steps, but considering that I am on-the-go and am needing to repeatedly take my phone out of my pocket and bring it somewhat close to my ear so as to hear VoiceOver announce the cardinal direction (and the repetitive instruction to hold my phone flat), it is doable but non-ideal. I was wondering if you have found alternative SOPs to use a compass. I am thinking of the following ideas: * A simple physical compass that is tactually accessible * Mapping a gesture or button combination on iOS to announcement of cardinal directions I would truly appreciate any recommendations for products, strategies, or otherwise. Hope y'all have a lovely weekend! I am also familiar with the architectural design trend of many campuses I have visited over the years. One idea might be to consider a beacon driven app such as Microsoft SoundScape. You can set an address marker to places you frequently travel and activate a directional beacon towards your destination. You can customize the app to say as little or as much as you like which is a feature I especially appreciate. Sometimes I don't want nor need too extensive extraneous environmental information, I just want to know if I am heading in the right direction while attending to what's happening around me. Another nice thing about this app is that the beacon sound responds in stereo according to your physical trajectory. You can use the app hands free via use of bone conducting headset which minimizes interference with environmental cues. BlindSquare is another multifunctional navigational app that costs something around $30 US and provides intermittent distance and directional info, as well as announcing points of interest. Those are a couple of ideas off the top of my head for whatever they may be worth to you. If I can be of further assistance, please feel at liberty to contact me. The problem with mapping some kind of iOS gesture is that you still have to take your phone out of your pocket, open it, and hold it flat which is mostly the time consuming part. The idea of a tactile compass is a good one, if you could get it to work. My idea has always been a watch with a tactile compass built in, but in my mind the problem with this has always been that that kind of technology would probably be heavier than I would like on a watch, and less fashionable too. And if you could design a lightweight tactile compass that could hang from the string of your cane, this could work. Also using EarPods could make the iPhone process faster. Let me know if you have any other thoughts. In particular, many buildings are not noted on OSM, and some places are a bit off. I intend to reach out to my university's disability office to get OSM data for my campus substantially improved. Message-ID: <000601d821e7$a2ca0460$e85e0d20$@gmail.com> Roses are red. Violets are blue. If you haven't registered yet, Have we got good news for you! Midwest 2022 is just four weeks away, And if you're planning to come, We're shouting hurray! If you aren't quite certain, Our hearts are hurting, So stop the delay, And register today! .Or anytime between today and 11:59 PM CST on Monday, February 28th, 2022, our new registration deadline. See below for additional details. The Midwest Planning Committee is certain that you will experience some serious FOMO if you don't take advantage of the opportunity to register for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, taking place in the great state of Illinois at the Holiday Inn Chicago O'Hare Area, from March 18-20, 2022. As many of you know, this will be one of our first National Association of Blind Students in-person events since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are ecstatic to gather with some of our NABS family once again. The ever-changing state of our world over the last two years has been an immensely difficult time for many, and we hope that this year's seminar, fittingly entitled "Back in Action," provides attendees with the opportunity to learn and grow alongside many students from across the region who find themselves in similar situations. The registration link for our event is below, and we invite you to get registered anytime between now and the closing of our extended registration window on Monday, February 28, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST; however, we would like to point out just a few things before you let excitement get the best of you. .The city of Chicago has recently placed restrictions on restaurants and other public establishments, based on vaccination status. While there will most likely be more information released in the coming weeks regarding this policy, its practices, and its exemptions, we know we will be conducting a majority of our programming in such spaces. Please acknowledge before filling out this form that the lack of COVID-19 vaccination for non-disability or religious reasons may significantly limit your ability to participate fully in our programming or prevent participation altogether. .Each attendee is responsible for a $100 registration fee, payable to NABS, which will cover meals throughout the weekend as well as administrative expenses necessary to support this event. We encourage you to proactively reach out to your vocational rehabilitation agency and/or National Federation of the Blind state affiliate to help offset this expense. This fee is due by the time registration closes on Monday, February 28, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST. Until we receive both your registration form response and this fee, your spot is not guaranteed. .Please note that all attendees will need to submit proof of a negative COVID test within 60 hours of our event's start, regardless of vaccination status. This proof will need to be submitted to a designated party no later than noon on Friday, March 18, 2022. Additionally, masks will be required during any/all 2022 Midwest Student Seminar activities. .Finally, we will not be assigning roommates for this event. We are more than happy to support you in finding a roommate if you require assistance, which you can indicate on the registration form linked below; however, if you do not either take the initiative to procure a roommate or reach out for assistance, you will be responsible for the hotel expense of $109 + applicable taxes and fees for each night of the event. Please take the time to get registered for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, using the link below, and let the excitement begin! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUi2Noe4-pgRm2s56uClV_pA2ZfTbF8bnB 99UfO2Vrf17LWg/viewform?usp=sf_link If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com . If you use Apple Pay Instant Transfer, you have to have the 15.1 update to use that feature. I have not had a voice over issue with 15, but my continuous glucose monitor does not work with 15.3. Still working on that issue. A rule of thumb I use for updates is to never download any update with a zero in it. For example, 15.0. I have been told by a couple of tech friends that most accessibility or voice over problems occurs in the first release of an update. Hope this helps. I was fully sighted until I was 14 years old. The people I was friends with before continued to be friends with me after. However, it may not always be that way for everyone. I do not necessarily need any accommodations since I go to church with family. Although I do not walk with a cane, a good bit of people know about my vision because of being involved in different activities over the years. That said, I am unable to read the hymns and the bulletin. I personally do not mind because services are similar enough that I think it is no sweat to just say or sing what I know from memory. That and I do not go to church frequently enough for it to be worth everyone's time to provide me with those things in braille. -----Original Message----- From: NABS-L On Behalf Of VIAS, ARMANDO via NABS-L Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2022 2:59 PM To: nabs-l at nfbnet.org Cc: VIAS, ARMANDO Subject: [NABS-L] Your experiences with churches Hello everyone. At one church, someone in the congregation got a Braille hymnal for me, and the pastor would send an email with the songs ahead of time so I knew which hymn pages to grab (the hymnal was in six three-ringed binders). I have also been able to participate in choirs at two churches. I have also preached at several congregations, and I never had a problem. Sometimes it can be awkward with meeting new people and trying to navigate the sanctuary, but most people have been pretty helpful. Message-ID: Happy Monday, NABSters! Your friendly Midwest Planning Committee is dropping in with your weekly reminder to get registered for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar anytime between now and 11:59 PM CST on Monday, February 28th, 2022, our new registration deadline. That means you have just eight more days to get in on the action. (That’s only 192 hours, give or take a few…) So don’t let this opportunity pass you by! See below for additional details. The Midwest Planning Committee is certain that you will experience some serious FOMO if you don’t take advantage of the opportunity to register for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, taking place in the great state of Illinois at the Holiday Inn Chicago O’Hare Area, from March 18-20, 2022. As many of you know, this will be one of our first National Association of Blind Students in-person events since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are ecstatic to gather with some of our NABS family once again. The ever-changing state of our world over the last two years has been an immensely difficult time for many, and we hope that this year’s seminar, fittingly entitled “Back in Action,” provides attendees with the opportunity to learn and grow alongside many students from across the region who find themselves in similar situations. The registration link for our event is below, and we invite you to get registered anytime between now and the closing of our extended registration window on Monday, February 28, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST; however, we would like to point out just a few things before you let excitement get the best of you. •The city of Chicago has recently placed restrictions on restaurants and other public establishments, based on vaccination status. •Each attendee is responsible for a $100 registration fee, payable to NABS, which will cover meals throughout the weekend as well as administrative expenses necessary to support this event. •Please note that all attendees will need to submit proof of a negative COVID test within 60 hours of our event’s start, regardless of vaccination status. This proof will need to be submitted to a designated party no later than noon on Friday, March 18, 2022. Additionally, masks will be required during any/all 2022 Midwest Student Seminar activities. •Finally, we will not be assigning roommates for this event. Please take the time to get registered for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, using the link below, and let the excitement begin! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUi2Noe4-pgRm2s56uClV_pA2ZfTbF8bnB99UfO2Vrf17LWg/viewform?usp=sf_link If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com. This is a question primarily for those in a social science discipline or those studying social work. I’m at a point where I need to create a genogram for one of my class. For those who are not aware of what Genogram is, A genogram is a map of certain family relations, events, qualities, and circumstances. It is a working tool used by social workers. This is definitely a heavy visual creation process. I’m curious to hear from other social work students on how they accomplished this assignment? Are you aware of any Genogram creation tools online that are accessible? Are there alternative ways to create a Genogram equivalent that achieves this visual diagram? Looking forward to hearing from you all! Message-ID: Hey, NABS Nation!™ Your friendly Midwest Planning Committee is dropping in with your final reminder to get registered for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar anytime between now and 11:59 PM CST tonight! That means you have around 12 hours to get your ducks in a row. So don’t let this opportunity pass you by, or you’ll be left flapping your wings! •Each attendee is responsible for a $100 registration fee, payable to NABS, which will cover meals throughout the weekend as well as administrative expenses necessary to support this event. Please take the time to get registered for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, using the link below, and let the excitement begin! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUi2Noe4-pgRm2s56uClV_pA2ZfTbF8bnB99UfO2Vrf17LWg/viewform?usp=sf_link If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com. Each year we receive submissions from blind and low vision individuals far and wide with big ideas, and while the people, places, and ideas may vary, there is something all Holman Prize applicants have in common—Blind Ambition. A couple weeks ago, Holman team member Lee Kumutat had the pleasure of speaking with the presenter of the Vision Australia podcast, Stella Glorie. The two discussed the application process, what the judges are looking for, and the many accomplishments of previous years’ Holman Prizewinners. The 2022 application submission period ends on March 20. If you are interested in applying, we encourage you to listen to the Holman Prize Interview episode of Vision Australia’s podcast. You can also visit the Holman Prize website or email any questions you may have to holman at lighthouse-sf.org.
