Below you will find instructions for registering with the division, making a STEM scholarship donation, and joining the division's e-mail list. NFB Science and Engineering Division Registration To either become a registered member of the Science and Engineering division, or to renew your membership, go to "http://www.nfb.org/divisiondues". The dues are $5 a year per person. Please do not make any STEM scholarship donations on this page for the NFB is not yet equipped to separate dues payments from donations on this web page. The Scholarship donation process is below. STEM Scholarship Donations The Science and Engineering Division and the Computer Science Division are raising funds for a $3000 or $5000 "Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics" (STEM) scholarship given by the NFB, to a worthy student at the NFB convention. In 2021, we were able to raise $5,000 for this scholarship. Please consider donating to the NFB towards this scholarship. To donate: There are two ways to donate to the NFB STEM Scholarship: one method is online, and the second method is by mail. If you wish to make an online donation: go to "https://www.nfb.org/donate". Fill out the required fields. On the "Contribution Note" field please enter "STEM Scholarship". Once your donation has been submitted, you will receive an automatic acknowledgment of your donation. Please forward this donation acknowledgement to John Miller (Johnmillerphd at hotmail.com) so that he can track our progress towards our funding goal. To donate by mail: Please make a check payable to NFB. On the memo line write STEM Scholarship. Mail the check to NFB accounting/scholarship 200 East Wells St. at Jernigan Place Baltimore, MD 21230. Please make your contributions by March 1, 2022 so that your contributions can count towards the 2022 STEM Scholarship. NFB Science and Engineering E-mail List Subscription Page The NFBnet.org website contains the Email/Web/FTP service of the National Federation of the Blind (https://www.nfbnet.org/). The first link on the page is where you go to join or drop NFBnet mailing lists, as well as browse the archives. Clicking that link opens a page containing the NFB e-mail lists. Search for "NFB-Science" and follow the subscription instructions. Four black girls walking down stairs in the Birmingham, Alabama 16th Street Baptist Church are killed by a bomb set by the Ku Klux Klan. Annie Lee Cooper attempts to register to vote in Selma, Alabama, but is prevented by the white registrar. King meets with Lyndon B. Johnson and asks for federal legislation to allow black citizens to register to vote unencumbered, but the president responds that, although he understands Dr. King's concerns, he has more important projects. King travels to Selma with Ralph Abernathy, Andrew Young, James Orange, and Diane Nash. James Bevel greets them, and other SCLC activists appear. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover tells Johnson that King is a problem, and suggests they disrupt his marriage. Coretta Scott King has concerns about her husband's upcoming work in Selma. King calls singer Mahalia Jackson to inspire him with a song. King, other SCLC leaders, and black Selma residents march to the registration office to register. After a confrontation in front of the courthouse, a shoving match occurs as the police go into the crowd. Cooper fights back, knocking Sheriff Jim Clark to the ground, leading to the arrest of Cooper, King, and others. Alabama Governor George Wallace speaks out against the movement. Coretta meets with Malcolm X, who says he will drive whites to ally with King by advocating a more extreme position. Wallace and Al Lingo decide to use force at an upcoming night march in Marion, Alabama, using state troopers to assault the marchers. A group of protesters runs into a restaurant to hide, but troopers rush in and beat and shoot Jimmie Lee Jackson. King and Bevel meet with Cager Lee, Jackson's grandfather, at the morgue. King speaks to ask people to continue to fight for their rights. Harassing phone calls with a recording of sexual activity implied to be King and another woman lead to an argument with Coretta; she knows it is a fabrication, but the strain of constant death threats has taken its toll on her. King is criticized by members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). As the Selma-to-Montgomery march is about to begin, King talks to Young about delaying it for a day so he can spend some time with his family, but Young convinces King to let the march begin as scheduled without him, saying he can join later. The marchers, including John Lewis of SNCC, Hosea Williams of SCLC, and Selma activist Amelia Boynton, cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge and approach a line of state troopers who put on gas masks. The troopers order the marchers to turn back and, when the marchers hold their ground, the troopers attack with clubs, horses, tear gas, and other weapons. Lewis and Boynton are among those badly injured. The attack is shown on national television and the wounded are treated at Brown Chapel, the movement's headquarter church. Movement attorney Fred Gray asks federal Judge Frank Minis Johnson to let another attempt at the march go forward. President Johnson demands that King and Wallace cease their activities and sends Assistant Attorney General John Doar to convince King to postpone the next march. Numerous white Americans, including Viola Liuzzo and James Reeb, arrive to join the second march. Marchers cross the bridge again and see the state troopers lined up, but the troopers turn aside to let them pass. King, after praying, turns around and leads the group away, which again draws sharp criticism from SNCC activists. That evening, Reeb is beaten to death by an angry white mob on a street in Selma. After a hearing, Judge Johnson approves the march. President Johnson speaks before a Joint Session of Congress to ask for quick passage of a bill to eliminate restrictions on voting, praising the courage of the activists. The march on the highway to Montgomery takes place, and, when the marchers reach Montgomery, King delivers a speech on the steps of the State Capitol. Thirty scholarships are available for blind students who are residents of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico and who are pursuing or plan to pursue a full-time post-secondary course of study in a degree program at an accredited United States institution in the fall of the 2022-2023 academic year.* In recognition of the rising cost of tuition and after careful review of the scholarship program, each scholarship winner will receive $8,000. This amount will replace the tiered scholarship amounts used in previous years. However, special scholarships will still be presented to students in certain areas of study or with other specific qualifications. The application period closes March 31. Scholarship finalists will be announced later in the spring and will attend and participate in the 2022 convention of the National Federation of the Blind, which takes place July 5-10 in New Orleans. The class of finalists will select one from among their number who will receive a special scholarship and have the opportunity to address the convention banquet. “Our scholarship program is one of our longest-running and most important initiatives, through which we recognize academic excellence and cultivate future leaders of the organized blind movement,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “Building on that strong foundation, we are now significantly enhancing the awards granted and making the experience even more inclusive, engaging, and meaningful for the finalists.” *Please note: One scholarship may be given to a person employed full-time while attending school part-time. In addition, applicants must be eighteen years of age by July 5, 2022. For more information and to apply online, visit www.nfb.org/scholarships. ### About the National Federation of the Blind The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), headquartered in Baltimore, defends the rights of blind people of all ages and provides information and support to families with blind children, older Americans who are losing vision, and more. Message-ID: Good afternoon, NABS Nation! ™ The Midwest Planning Committee is dropping in with its (now weekly!) reminder that you can now register for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, taking place in the great state of Illinois at the Holiday Inn Chicago O’Hare Area, from March 18-20, 2022. As many of you know, this will be one of our first National Association of Blind Students in-person events since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are ecstatic to gather with some of our NABS family once again. The ever-changing state of our world over the last two years has been an immensely difficult time for many, and we hope that this year’s seminar, fittingly entitled “Back in Action,” provides attendees with the opportunity to learn and grow alongside many students from across the region who find themselves in similar situations. The registration link for our event is below, and we invite you to get registered anytime between now and the closing of our registration window on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST; however, we would like to point out just a few things before you let excitement get the best of you. •Each attendee is responsible for a $100 registration fee, payable to NABS, which will cover meals throughout the weekend as well as administrative expenses necessary to support this event. We encourage you to proactively reach out to your vocational rehabilitation agency and/or National Federation of the Blind state affiliate to help offset this expense. This fee is due by the time registration closes on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM CST. Until we receive both your registration form response and this fee, your spot is not guaranteed. •Please note that all attendees will need to submit proof of a negative COVID test within 60 hours of our event’s start, regardless of vaccination status. This proof will need to be submitted to a designated party no later than noon on Friday, March 18, 2022. Additionally, masks will be required during any/all 2022 Midwest Student Seminar activities. •Finally, we will not be assigning roommates for this event. We are more than happy to support you in finding a roommate if you require assistance, which you can indicate on the registration form linked below; however, if you do not either take the initiative to procure a roommate or reach out for assistance, you will be responsible for the hotel expense of $109 + applicable taxes and fees for each night of the event. Please take the time to get registered for the 2022 Midwest Student Seminar, using the link below, and let the excitement begin! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUi2Noe4-pgRm2s56uClV_pA2ZfTbF8bnB99UfO2Vrf17LWg/viewform?usp=sf_link If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com. Message-ID: Attention all Super Bowl lovers! Whether you are a football fanatic or you watch for the commercials, we have some exciting news! As Super Bowl LVI approaches, we’re to revive a fan favorite with the launch of 2022 Super Bowl Roulette! This fundraiser, which consists of nothing more than a well formatted spreadsheet, is open to all. Whether you’ve slayed the game and hold the number one seed in your Fantasy Football league or you can’t tell the difference between offense and defense, you could win big alongside the Super Bowl champions on February 13, 2022. *How does it all work, you ask?* Let’s start with the spreadsheet itself. Horizontally across the top of the sheet, the numbers 1-9, followed by a 0 are displayed. The same numbers are also listed vertically down the far left column. The horizontal and vertical numbers intersect in 100 numbered squares on the sheet. For example, number 3 on the horizontal line meets number 1 on the vertical line in intersecting square 3. The horizontal line represents the team score from the National Football Conference (NFC), and the vertical line represents the team score from the American Football Conference (AFC). *Now, how do you play?* Each numbered box can be purchased for only $5, and you can buy as many boxes as you want. Because we want anyone and everyone to have a chance at winning big, boxes are assigned upon purchase using a random number generator. No knowledge of the sport is required to win. *But how do I win?* After purchasing your squares, you have four chances to win during the game—at the end of each quarter. The secret to winning lies in the scores of the teams. The final digit in each team’s score, or, if the score is a single digit, the only number, decides the winner. If you own the square where the two ending scores intersect, you win! For example, if you own box 3 from our example above, your horizontal or NFC score has to end in 3 (this number could be 3, 43, 13, etc.) and your vertical or AFC score has to end in 1 (this number could be 1, 61, 11, etc.) If your NFC score ends in 3, and your AFC score ends in 1, you win! *So what do I win?* At the end of each quarter, the owner of the square that denotes the game’s current score wins $25, and whoever owns the square denoting the game’s final score wins $50! What if the score of the game stays the same? Great question! Each square can win two times i.e. two quarters for a total of $50 or a quarter and the final score for a total of $75. *How do I buy my square(s)?* Getting in on the action is easy! Get in touch with NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com or by phone at 563-210-1854. Let her know how many squares you’d like to purchase and how you’ll be paying. Then, send your payments via PayPal (@NABSPayments) or Venmo (@NABSlink). Make sure to put “Super Bowl Roulette” in the notation line of your transaction, and once Elizabeth confirms that your payment has been received, she will let you know what squares you own. Then, wait for February 13th, and keep an eye on the score! Still have questions? Reach out to Elizabeth, and she’ll clarify anything you need. Enjoy the rest of football season, and may the Super Bowl Roulette odds be ever in your favor! Feel free to participate in this opportunity to help promote accessible educational software and online learning. Letter of Invitation to Participate in a Research Study Dear Student, My name is Heidi Ancer. I am a doctoral student at the University of Arizona Global Campus. I am kindly requesting your participation in a doctoral research project that I am conducting titled: Accessibility Challenges of Online Learning Affecting Successful Degree Completion Among Visually Impaired Undergraduate/Graduate Students: An Exploratory Case Study. The intention is to explore how online college students with visual impairment perceive accessibility challenges and how these challenges might influence successful degree completion for this student population. The option of distance education and online learning provides individuals with visual impairment the opportunity to pursue higher education through using virtual classroom platforms. With this delivery method of providing students the opportunity of pursuing and possibly completing their academic studies, the online/distance learning environment needs to be completely accessible to these students for them to be successful in their journey of degree completion. I would like to interview undergraduate/graduate students with visual impairment who are currently taking at least one college course via distance learning/online platforms to explore if these students have encountered any perceived accessible challenges in the classroom and if they perceive these challenges as having any impact on successful degree completion in their studies. To be eligible for participation in this study, potential participants must be: list of 1 items . An undergraduate/graduate college student enrolled in at least one online course at a two- or four-year college/university. list end list of 3 items . Have a visual impairment that impacts their ability to access course materials/resources. . Have experience with online learning that is not fully accessible to the student because of the student's visual impairment. . At least 18 years of age or older. list end Participation in this study is voluntary, and participants may withdraw from the study at any time without any notice. The study is completely anonymous; therefore, it does not require you to provide your name or any other identifying information. There is no compensation for participating in this study. If you choose to participate in the study, you will be contacted via email or telephone and schedule an interview at a time mutually agreeable to you and the researcher. The researcher will provide information on the virtual location (Zoom) and how to access the platform. The interview will take approximately one hour to complete. If you have questions regarding your participation in the study, or if you seek to verify authenticity of the study, please contact the University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC) Institutional Review Board chair at irb at uagc.edu or the study chair, Susan Gunther, PhD, at susan.gunther at faculty.uagc.edu . Even though Penn State has this statement, I think Penn State needs improvement when it comes to accessibility. Personally, I think an accessibility statement is not helpful to have. What is really helpful to have is a quality education that is accessible. Chances are, if your college does not want to have an accessibility statement (or seems to be dragging their feet about it), then that is not a good sign. They are trying to send information to me on applying for accessibility accommodations, but all I need is my question answered on if they are going to implement an accessibility statement on their website. _______________________________________________ NABS-L mailing list NABS-L at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nabs-l_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for NABS-L: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nabs-l_nfbnet.org/nspohn0%40gmail.com From Kschaber at my.chemeketa.edu Fri Jan 14 20:00:53 2022 From: Kschaber at my.chemeketa.edu (Kendra Schaber) Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2022 12:00:53 -0800 Subject: [NABS-L] College website accessibility In-Reply-To: <75446F49-44A7-45C6-9BC0-F8BA493B2D90@armandovias.com> References: <75446F49-44A7-45C6-9BC0-F8BA493B2D90@armandovias.com> Message-ID: <8e72198da0f59c79ed291355d7581ef1@mail.gmail.com> Hi Armando, My school has an accessability statement on their website. I have not actually read it, but I have seen the link many times. I know what you mean about advocating to improve your school's website. I'm currently advocating to include a more inclusive help section on my own school's website. The problem is that there is a general lack of access to the web developers and those that have the power and ability to actually improve these websites. We're not exclusive to this problem, I had a formal teacher email me yesterday and she too informed me that the powers that be won't let even her improve my school's website. I think there needs to be more access to places that allow for feedback and also, there needs to be more opportunities to self advocate to improve these websites. Also, are you having general issues with accessing your school's website? If so, you'll want to contact your disability service's accessable media person, if you have one, and if not, sign up for your school's disability services, even if you don't feel the need. The reason is so that if you run into problems with accessing your school's matereals, no matter where they pop up, then, you'll have your foot in the door, therefore, that includes the ability to improve your experience as a student. I hope this helps! I totally agree with Nick because if you have an accessibility statement, and your school isn't actually helping you, then there are some major problems going on at your school. I'm going to Chemeketa Community College and they too have an accessibility link which is where I could go to find their accessibility statement. At least my school has a decent disability department that actually tries with their limited resources to make my course matereals accessible. Even so, I still believe in supplementing your school's resources with your own, even when they're decent because sometimes, classes move so fast that your school can't keep up with the pace. Even so, the better your school's resources, the less you have to add your own resources, even if all you added was AIRA which is expensive in less your school is one of the lucky AIRA access partners. Welcome to the world of college life as a blind student! I hope we can help you with the good, the bad, and the ugly! I totally agree with Nick. I don't believe that there is such a thing as full accessibility in the college world because even though we have made a lot of progress, we still have miles to go, especially in the fields of math and science. Even without math and science, you will always run into inaccessible websites, inaccessible videos, slides with inaccessible pictures, especially in cases where your school doesn't have the ability to make their own braille graphics, and, there are those inaccessible apps, and dodgy resources that are accessible, but are not inclusive, especially to those such as myself who is not enough of a techie to completely keep up with all of the 2021 features, but is more techie than is required to live in the 1990s. Even when things are accessible, you're always going to have products that you enjoy a lot and products that are not accessible to you because even though they are conciddered to be accessible, they are either above your skill leval, or they are so clunky that the developers didn't include work flow into their deffenation of what accessibility means. In my mind, work flow counts because without the ability of having good work flow, that's a form of inaccessibility because without that work flow, you can't completely keep up with the pace of college. For example, I don't like Google Dox because even though it's conciddered to be accessible, it's not accessible to me because when I go to use it, it's either too buggy, or it doesn't have the right work flow that would allow me to keep up with the fast pace of the college world. I stick to the old school Microsoft Word document as much as possible because I like Microsoft Word much better because it actually includes work flow as a required accessible feature. You might like Google Dox better than I which is fine, but this is also what you run into as a blind student. Also, since the world is semi virtual, you have to understand what your school can do for you, what they can't do for you, and how to line up your resources with theirs as needed. Also, keep in mind that your school's accessibility department might have a biest perspective that's in favor of your school, so therefore, they might have somewhat of a less than accurate ability to figure out what's accessible, what's not accessible, and/or even, where they're able to completely keep up with the pace of your classes. From stories I've heard over the years, most schools also don't completely understand your needs as a blind student which also impacts your ability to get a completely inclusive experience at your school as a blind student. With that in mind, it's always a good idea to observe how your school is able to keep up with you and your classes, what resources they have avalible to them, what resources you have avalible to you, and determine whether or not they're able to fully help you throughout your entire education. If you find that they can't completely cover your education in the accessibility department, or they can't keep up with everything, then you'll either need to come up with your own resources, change your education plan, change your school, or escalate the case, or some combination of these, depending on your situation. I'd start with knowing everyone's avalible resources, and step it up leval by leval from there. Only escalate the case as a last resort. This journey will include nostalgia, fondness, and maybe even some similarities. The vehicle, of course, will be the sweet melody, harmonies, and rhythmic vibrations of our NABS Jukebox. We invite you to NABS On Shuffle. ON Monday, January 17 at 9pm EDT, Shuffle's theme is: Pre-Y2K. That's right friends, pull out your 12-inch records, your cassettes, your CDs, your vinyls, your iPod Minis, and help us learn about each other's interest, whether it be genre ,era, production, etc. As always, the D.E.I. committee would love your input on what the jukebox plays Monday evening. Here's the rules: 1. Anyone can submit a song request, regardless of if they are an active student. 2. The song must have been released prior to the year 2000. 3. You are welcomed to submit a song request even if you can't make Shuffle this Monday, but we know you'd make it :) . Feel free to share your taste with us, because your membership and interest help make NABS so diverse. 4. All song requests will be evaluated for relation to the voted theme, (Pre-Y2K) 5. I really hope we can find a way to make these tests accessible soon. In the meantime, if you want to order these inaccessible tests, they may still be useful to you. I am personally in the process of recovering from COVID-19 right now. I have had symptoms for 7 days, and it has been like a nasty winter cold. I consider myself fortunate to have had access to both the vaccine and booster. Without them, I could have become much sicker. Before I can go back on campus, I need to have two consecutive days of negative rapid antigen tests. Since I cannot perform these tests myself, I have made arrangements with student health services at my university so that they will perform the test on me once I am fully asymptomatic. That is still not ideal, but I share this with everyone in case it is helpful in the process of problem-solving your own returns to campus after you have been infected. If not for what I have learned from the National Federation of the Blind, the self-advocacy that I had to do with this testing might have been much more difficult. The Federation has taught me that I have the right to live in the world. I hope everyone takes this virus seriously. Be well, everyone. I don't think about my story as an issue of it being hard to get the school to read my tests, though. What I really hope to highlight from my experience is that there are certain things that need to be done to keep everyone safe during COVID, and one of those things is that a person who is COVID-positive needs to clear rapid antigen tests on two consecutive days before returning to campus. Because the testing is not yet accessible, I am unable to follow that safety protocol. That potentially puts other people at risk. I have not left my studio apartment since I got my positive test, not even to take out the trash. I should be taking an at-home covid test before I leave my apartment, but I cannot do that because it's not accessible. I want to do my part to make sure that I am not getting anyone else sick, but staying in isolation until I can clear two at-home rapid antigen tests is not an option that I have. Though it's true that the virus is still going around and all of us still have the potential of catching it, the vaccine certainly does seem to help a great deal. As I think about the issue of inaccessible Covid tests, it seems at first to be a no-brainer that we should do everything we can to advocate for the accessibility of testing and all other related treatments. However, I'm curious as to how a manufacturer or the government would make an at-home Covid test accessible? Perhaps the NFB has already proposed a design solution and I just haven't read it yet, but I'm wondering what we plan to suggest to the Biden administration and the companies making the actual test kits. I would appreciate hearing perspectives on this. Stay well! I understand there may be issues with scheduling and things of that nature, but it appears that the problem is most people (disabled or not) don't know how to use the at-home tests correctly. I've heard that if you're not using the test properly, it can actually yield a false negative whereas you might very well be positive (albiet something like 1 in 98-99 percent chance). So I personally feel that if you want/need to take a COVID test, it would probably be better to have it done by a  professional who actually knows what they're doing. If you have a drugstore nearby, you can always go down there and request a rapid test, or schedule an appointment for a PCR. I, for instance, traveled to France last month to visit my maternal relatives (my first time traveling up there in well over two years), and I had to get tested right before returning home. I was fortunate that there happened to be a pharmacy right within walking distance from my hotel, so I was able to walk down there and obtain a rapid test the day before my flight back home. Additionally, in a few weeks I'll be traveling down to Bethesda, Maryland, to the National Eye Institute, to see if my total blindness since birth may be the result of a rare genetic disorder (something that has always been a mystery to my family and I). Before arriving there, the receptionist told me that my parents and I would all need to schedule a PCR test no more than 72 hours before the appointment, and she told me that they don't accept any rapid COVID tests (so likely no at-home test either);  they absolutely must be PCR. That's probably the very reason at-home testing isn't always 100 percent reliable to begin with. My apologies for the unnecessary personal anecdotes here, but as you can probably tell by my message, I personally don't think this issue is unique to the blind. It seems just as easy for a sighted, able-bodied person to botch their at-home test, even, perhaps, with the instructions they have at hand. I'm not against anything the NFB is doing about this, but I honestly don't know if they can really do much about this if sighted people are having the same problem. I hope everyone has a good start to their spring semester, or whatever you're doing currently. I just wanted to drop the how-to instructions for Super Bowl Roulette in case anyone has forgotten how to play. How does it all work, you ask? Let’s start with the spreadsheet itself. Now, how do you play? Each numbered box can be purchased for only $5, and you can buy as many boxes as you want. Because we want anyone and everyone to have a chance at winning big, boxes are assigned upon purchase using a random number generator. No knowledge of the sport is required to win. But how do I win? After purchasing your squares, you have four chances to win during the game—at the end of each quarter. So what do I win? At the end of each quarter, the owner of the square that denotes the game’s current score wins $25, and whoever owns the square denoting the game’s final score wins $50! What if the score of the game stays the same? Great question! Each square can win two times i.e. two quarters for a total of $50 or a quarter and the final score for a total of $75. How do I buy my square(s)? Getting in on the action is easy! -----Original Message----- From: NABS-L On Behalf Of Hunter Kuester via NABS-L Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2022 3:45 PM To: Nabs-l at nfbnet.org Cc: Hunter Kuester Subject: [NABS-L] Super Bowl roulette What’s up NABS nation, The nabs fundraising committee is excited to announce that we have filled up our first Super Bowl roulette board! •The city of Chicago has recently placed restrictions on restaurants and other public establishments, based on vaccination status. While there will most likely be more information released in the coming weeks regarding this policy, its practices, and its exemptions, we know we will be conducting a majority of our programming in such spaces. Please acknowledge before filling out this form that the lack of COVID-19 vaccination for non-disability or religious reasons may significantly limit your ability to participate fully in our programming or prevent participation altogether. Applications are being accepted until April 15. This year we will be awarding one scholarship for $2,000 and one scholarship for $1,500 to qualified applicants. In addition to the monetary award, winners will have the opportunity to attend the Annual Conventionof the National Federation of the Blind during July 5-10 at our expense in New Orleans this year. At the convention, scholarship winners will have the chance to meet other blind students from throughout the country and gain valuable insights into succeeding as blind people. Additionally, both winners are required, at our expense, to attend the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota convention in the fall, tentatively scheduled for November 4-6 in Bloomington, Minnesota. The scholarships will be presented at the banquet of this convention. Our state conventions were "virtual conventions" in 2020 and 2021, and final decisions will be made closer to the scheduled date whether our convention is virtual or we can meet in person. In either case, scholarships will be awarded. Candidates must be students who are legally blind and attending a post-secondary school full-time or part-time in Minnesota. In order to apply for a scholarship, complete the online application at https://nfbmn.org/scholarship-program. Be sure to include the additional required documents and send them to scholarships at nfbmn.org. You can also request a Microsoft Word version of the application by writing to mailto:Scholarships at nfbmn.org. If it is necessary to send this information on paper, mail to: NFB of Minnesota Scholarships 100 East 22nd Street Minneapolis, MN 55404 The following documents must also be supplied: 1. Personal essay from applicant. NFB scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic excellence and community/campus service and leadership. In your essay, discuss your academic and career goals as well as your academic, community, and/or employment experiences. Tell us about yourself and why you are a deserving recipient of the scholarship. Since the awards are restricted to legally blind people, the committee will also be interested in the techniques you use to succeed as a student who is blind. If you are a part time student, tell us how your part time status supports your educational goals. 2. Two letters of recommendation. You can send these via email to scholarships at nfbmn.org 3. Current official transcript from institution now attending and transcripts from all other post-secondary institutions attended. If you have not yet completed one year of college study, submit a transcript from the high school you previously attended. All applicants will be contacted by a member of the scholarship committee shortly after the application deadline. A telephone interview will give you the opportunity to tell the committee more about yourself and your goals for the future. Your application, essay, letters of recommendation, and transcript(s) must be received by April 15, 2022. If you or anyone else should have any questions regarding these awards, please contact the Scholarship Committee, at scholarships at nfbmn.org or call us at 612-872-9363. Additionally, the National Federation of the Blind offers 30 national scholarships each year. This is a completely separate program with a separate application process. The application deadline for that program is March 31, and arranging for an interview with our state president before the national deadline is required. If not come and join the National Federation of the Blind of Sc for a presentation of the movie 42! All of the movies that we show are audio described. The Zoom information to join us is below the information pertaining to the movie. In 1945, sportswriter Wendell Smith suggests that Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey consider Jackie Robinson as the black ballplayer Rickey is looking for. Robinson and his team, the Kansas City Monarchs, stop by a gas station. When the attendant refuses Robinson entry to the washroom, Robinson says they will find another station at which to fill up the team bus, and the attendant relents. As Robinson steps out, a scout for the Dodgers sent by Rickey approaches him and invites him to Brooklyn. He is offered a $600 per month contract and a $3,500 signing bonus, which Robinson accepts after being warned by Rickey that he must control his temper if he wants to play. Robinson proposes to his girlfriend, Rachel, by phone and she accepts. During spring training, Robinson earns a roster spot with the Montreal Royals, the AAA affiliate of the Brooklyn farm system. After a great season there and spring training in Panama, he advances to the Dodgers. Many of the players soon sign a petition, stating they refuse to play with Robinson, but manager Leo Durocher insists Robinson will play with the main team, and they relent. When Durocher is suspended by Happy Chandler, the Commissioner of Baseball, for actions in his personal life, leaving the Dodgers without a manager to start the regular season, Burt Shotton agrees to manage the team. In a game against the Philadelphia Phillies, manager Ben Chapman taunts Robinson, causing him to go back to the dugout and smash his bat out of frustration. With encouragement from Rickey, Robinson then returns to the field and hits a single, steals second base and advances to third on a throwing error, and scores the winning run. When Chapman's behavior toward Robinson generates bad press for the team, Phillies' general manager Herb Pennock requires him to pose with Robinson for newspapers and magazine photos prior to the next game between the two teams. Later, Robinson's teammate Pee Wee Reese comes to understand what kind of pressure Robinson is facing, and makes a public show of solidarity, standing with his arm around Robinson's shoulders before a hostile crowd at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, silencing them. In a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Enos Slaughter "accidentally" spikes Robinson on the back of the leg with his cleats while running to first base. Robinson's home run against Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Fritz Ostermueller, who had earlier hit him in the head, helps clinch the National League pennant for the Dodgers, sending them to the World Series. A series of texts are shown in the epilogue of the film regarding Robinson and his teammates future involvements as well as others.
