[NABS-L] Seeking presenters on postsecondary & job readiness training topics

Dear Students, Rehab Professionals, and Mentors:

I am seeking presenters on these topics over the next several weeks. If any of them strike a chord with you or if you have particular interest or expertise in these areas, please contact me off line and I will provide you with a detailed outline and Zoom information.

Conquering the Common Application Essay | 8/1/22
After completing this module, students will be familiar with the purpose and importance of the college common application essay, as well as effective strategies for preparing this essay, the brainstorming process, the use of branding, and the use of showing rather than telling. Students will also explore the pros and cons of disclosing their disability in their college essay.

Topics to be Addressed:

1.               What is the common application essay and why does it matter?

2.               How do you write the personal essay?

3.               Disclosure of disability in your college essay: If so, how?

Getting the Most Out of Your IEP in High School | 8/9/22
After completing this module, students will be familiar with their legal rights in the IEP process, the importance of addressing present and future needs, and the benefits of including self-advocacy as an IEP goal. They will also develop an awareness of their rights to Braille and assistive technology as part of the IEP, as well as strategies for asserting those rights.

Topics to be Addressed:

1.               Exploration of the IEP in high school

2.               Use of the IEP to ensure appropriate preparation and training to obtain post-secondary education success

Exploring Your Interests Through Job Shadowing and Internships | 9/6/22
After completing this module, students will be familiar with various additional tools for exploring careers such as job shadowing, internships, and apprenticeships. They will learn about the steps required to pursue and effectively prepare for these opportunities.
Topics to be Addressed:

1.               Tools for hands-on job exploration, including job shadowing

2.               The value of internships and apprenticeships

3.               How to find internship and apprenticeship opportunities

4.               The ins and outs of vocational schools

Notetaking Fundamentals | 9/12/22
After completing this module, students will be familiar with a range of devices, techniques, and strategies for efficiently taking notes in school and the workplace, how to identify methods best suited to their individual needs, and how to advocate for acquisition and training in the use of appropriate access technology and devices.
Topics Addressed:

  1.  The range of note taking tools and strategies
  2.  Strategies for determining the system or device that works best for the student
  3.  Methods for acquiring and obtaining training in the use of note taking devices


Preparation of a Resume and Cover Letter | 9/20/22
After completing this module, students will be familiar with various types and appropriate formats and content of a well-written resume. They will also learn about what information is required, the purpose, content, and structure of a cover letter.

Topics to be Addressed:

1.               Preparation of a resume

2.               Preparation of a cover letter
