Troubled by his broken relationship with his late father, John Kinsella, a devoted baseball fan, he fears growing old without achieving anything. While walking through his cornfield one evening, he hears a voice whispering, "If you build it, he will come." He sees a vision of a baseball diamond in the cornfield and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson standing in the middle. Believing in him, Annie lets him plow under part of their corn crop to build a baseball field, at risk of financial hardship. As Ray builds the field, he tells Karin about the 1919 Black Sox Scandal. Several months pass and just as Ray is beginning to doubt himself, Shoeless Joe reappears, asking if others can play and returns with the seven other Black Sox players. Annie's brother, Mark, can't see the players. He warns the couple they are going bankrupt and offers to buy their land. The voice, meanwhile, urges Ray to "ease his pain." Ray and Annie attend a PTA meeting, where she argues against someone who is trying to ban books by Terrence Mann. Ray deduces the voice was referring to Mann, who had named one of his characters "John Kinsella" and had once professed a childhood dream of playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When Ray and Annie have identical dreams about Ray and Mann attending a game at Fenway Park, Ray finds Mann in Boston. Mann, a recluse, agrees to attend one game. There Ray hears the voice urging him to "go the distance", seeing statistics on the scoreboard for Archie "Moonlight" Graham, who played in one game for the New York Giants in 1922 but never got to bat. Mann also admits to hearing the voice and seeing the scoreboard. They drive to Minnesota, learning that Graham, who was a physician, had died years earlier. Ray finds himself in 1972, encountering an elderly Graham, who says he happily left baseball for a satisfying medical career. During the drive back to Iowa, Ray picks up young hitchhiker Archie Graham (Frank Whaley), who is looking for a baseball team to join. Ray later tells Mann that his father dreamed of being a baseball player then tried to make him pick up the sport instead. At 14, after reading one of Mann's books, Ray stopped playing catch with his father, and they became estranged after he mocked John for having "a hero who was a criminal." Ray admits that his greatest regret is that his father died before they could reconcile. Arriving at the farm, they see various all-star players have arrived, fielding a second team. A game is played and Graham finally gets his turn at bat. The next morning, Mark returns, demanding that Ray sell the farm or the bank will foreclose on him. Karin insists that people will pay to watch the ballgames. Mann agrees, saying that "people will come" to relive their childhood innocence. Ray and Mark scuffle, knocking Karin off the bleachers. Graham — despite knowing he will be unable to return after stepping off the field — saves her. Having become old Dr. Graham again, he reassures Ray that he has no regrets. He is commended by the other players, and then disappears into the corn field. Suddenly, Mark too can see the players and urges Ray to keep the farm. Shoeless Joe invites Mann to enter the corn and Mann disappears into it. Ray is angry at not being invited but Joe rebukes him, glancing towards the catcher at home plate, saying, "If you build it, he will come." When the catcher removes his mask, Ray recognizes him as his father as a young man. Ray realizes "ease his pain" referred to his own regrets. Ray introduces John to his wife and daughter, initially without referring to him as his father. As John begins to head towards the cornfield, Ray, calling him "Dad", asks if he wants to have a catch. John gladly accepts as hundreds of cars are seen approaching the field, fulfilling the prophecy that people will come to watch baseball. Cast Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella Amy Madigan as Annie Kinsella Gaby Hoffmann as Karin Kinsella James Earl Jones as Terence Mann Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe Jackson Timothy Busfield as Mark Burt Lancaster as Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham Frank Whaley as young Archibald Graham Dwier Brown as John Kinsella Lee Garlington as Beulah Gasnick Michael Milhoan as Buck Weaver (3B) Steve Eastin as Eddie Cicotte (P) Charles Hoyes as Swede Risberg (C) Art LaFleur as Chick Gandil (1B) In addition, Anne Seymour, who died four months before the film's release, makes her final film appearance as the kindly Chisholm publisher who helps Ray and Mann. The identity of the actor who provided "The Voice", who speaks to Ray throughout the film, has remained unconfirmed since the film's release. Some believe it is Costner or Liotta, but the book's author W. P. Kinsella said he was told it was Ed Harris (Madigan's husband). Then-teenagers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were extras in the Fenway Park scene.[6][7] Production Phil Alden Robinson read Shoeless Joe in 1981 and liked it so much that he brought it to producers Lawrence Gordon and Charles Gordon. Lawrence Gordon worked for 20th Century Fox, part of the time as its president, and repeatedly mentioned that the book should be adapted into a film, but the studio always turned down the suggestion because they felt the project was too esoteric and noncommercial. Meanwhile, Robinson went ahead with his script, frequently consulting Kinsella for advice on the adaptation. Lawrence Gordon left Fox in 1986 and started pitching the adaptation to other studios. Universal Pictures accepted the project in 1987 and hired USC coach Rod Dedeaux as baseball advisor. Dedeaux brought along World Series champion and USC alumnus Don Buford to coach the actors.[8] The film was shot using the novel's title; eventually, an executive decision was made to rename it Field of Dreams. Robinson did not like the name, saying he loved Shoeless Joe, and that the new title was better suited for one about dreams deferred. Kinsella told Robinson after the fact that his original title for the book had been The Dream Field and that the publisher had imposed the title Shoeless Joe.[9] Casting Robinson and the producers did not originally consider Kevin Costner for the part of Ray Kinsella because they did not think that he would want to follow Bull Durham with another baseball film. The role of Ray was first offered to Tom Hanks but he turned it down.[10] He did, however, end up reading the script and became interested in the project, stating that he felt it would be "this generation's It's a Wonderful Life". Since Robinson's directing debut In the Mood had been a commercial failure, Costner also said that he would help him with the production. Amy Madigan, a fan of the book, joined the cast as Ray's wife, Annie. In the book, the writer Ray seeks out its real-life author J.D. Salinger. When Salinger threatened the production with a lawsuit if his name was used, Robinson decided to rewrite the character as reclusive Terence Mann. He wrote with James Earl Jones in mind because he thought it would be fun to see Ray trying to kidnap such a big man. Robinson had originally envisioned Shoeless Joe Jackson as being played by an actor in his 40s, someone who would be older than Costner and who could thereby act as a father surrogate. Ray Liotta did not fit that criterion, but Robinson thought he would be a better fit for the part because he had the "sense of danger" and ambiguity which Robinson wanted in the character. The role of Moonlight Graham was offered to James Stewart but he turned it down.[11] Burt Lancaster had originally turned down the part of Moonlight Graham, but changed his mind after a friend, who was also a baseball fan, told him that he had to work on the film.[8] Filming Filming began on May 25, 1988. The shooting schedule was built around Costner's availability because he would be leaving in August to film Revenge. Except for some weather delays and other time constraints, production rolled six days a week. The interior scenes were the first ones shot because the cornfield planted by the filmmakers was taking too long to grow. Irrigation had to be used to quickly grow the corn to Costner's height. Primary shot locations were in Dubuque County, Iowa; a farm near Dyersville was used for the Kinsella home; an empty warehouse in Dubuque was used to build various interior sets. Galena, Illinois, served as Moonlight Graham's Chisholm, Minnesota.[8] One week was spent on location shots in Boston, most notably Fenway Park.[12] Robinson, despite having a sufficient budget as well as the cast and crew he wanted, constantly felt tense and depressed during filming. He felt that he was under too much pressure to create an outstanding film, and that he was not doing justice to the original novel. Lawrence Gordon convinced him that the end product would be effective.[8] During a lunch with the Iowa Chamber of Commerce, Robinson broached his idea of a final scene in which headlights could be seen for miles along the horizon. The Chamber folks replied that it could be done and the shooting of the final scene became a community event. The film crew was hidden on the farm to make sure the aerial shots did not reveal them. A production assistant drove from the set into town and measured the distance between, deducing it would require 2,500 cars to fill the shot.[13] Dyersville was then blacked out and local extras drove their vehicles to the field. In order to give the illusion of movement, the drivers were instructed to continuously switch between their low and high beams. Field The Field of Dreams, Dyersville, Iowa, 2012 Main article: Field of Dreams (Dubuque County, Iowa) Scenes of the Kinsella farm were taken on the property of Don Lansing in Dyersville, Iowa; some of the baseball field scenes were shot on the neighboring farm of Al Ameskamp. Because the shooting schedule was too short for grass to naturally grow, the experts on sod laying responsible for Dodger Stadium and the Rose Bowl were hired to create the baseball field. Part of the process involved painting the turf green.[8] After shooting, Ameskamp again grew corn on his property; Lansing maintained his as a tourist destination.[8] He did not charge for admission or parking, deriving revenue solely from the souvenir shop. By the film's twentieth anniversary, approximately 65,000 people visited annually.[14] In July 2010, the farm containing the "Field" was listed as for sale.[15] It was sold on October 31, 2011, to Go The Distance Baseball, LLC, for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around $5.4 million.[16] MLB at Field of Dreams Main article: MLB at Field of Dreams In 2019, Major League Baseball announced that it would hold a special neutral-site regular season game between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees at the Dyersville site on August 13, 2020, playing on an 8,000-seat field constructed adjacent to the original, with a pathway connecting the two. The field would be modeled upon the White Sox's former field, Comiskey Park (which was used from 1910 to 1990).[17] As of July 1, 2020, the game was to still be played on August 13, 2020, but because of the shortened 2020 Major League Baseball season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the White Sox would play the St. Louis Cardinals.[18] On August 3, 2020, Major League Baseball announced that the game was cancelled due to logistical difficulties. It was later postponed to 2021.[19] The game was eventually held on the field on August 12, 2021, with the originally announced matchup of the White Sox and Yankees.[20][21] In the pre-game show, Kevin Costner emerged from the cornfield onto the outfield, followed by the players and managers from both teams. At the old-fashioned microphone in the diamond, Costner said, "Is this heaven? Yes, it is."[22] The White Sox beat the Yankees 9–8, following a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning by Tim Anderson, after the Yankees had scored four runs in the top of the inning to take an 8–7 lead.[23] A second Field of Dreams game is scheduled for August 11, 2022, with the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs as the participants. The Reds, who won the 1919 World Series that was marred by the Black Sox Scandal, will serve as the home team for the game.[24] Music Leonard Bernstein was the first choice to compose the score for the film but he was overbooked.[11] At first, James Horner was unsure if he could work on the film due to scheduling restrictions until he watched a rough cut and was so moved that he accepted the job of scoring it. Robinson had created a temp track which was disliked by Universal executives. When the announcement of Horner as composer was made, the executives felt more positive because they expected a big orchestral score, similar to Horner's work for An American Tail. Horner, in contrast, liked the temporary score, finding it "quiet and kind of ghostly". He decided to follow the idea of the temp track, creating an atmospheric soundtrack which would "focus on the emotions".[8] The score was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score but lost to the Alan Menken score for The Little Mermaid.[25] In addition to Horner's score, portions of several pop songs are heard during the film. They are listed in the following order in the closing credits: "Crazy", written by Willie Nelson and performed by Beverly D'Angelo "Daydream", written by John Sebastian and performed by The Lovin' Spoonful "Jessica", written by Dickey Betts and performed by The Allman Brothers Band "China Grove", written by Tom Johnston and performed by The Doobie Brothers "Lotus Blossom", written by Billy Strayhorn and performed by Duke Ellington The soundtrack was mastered by Greg Fulginiti. Historical connections The character played by Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley, Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, is based on an actual baseball player with the same name. His character is largely true to life except for a few factual liberties taken for artistic reasons. For instance, the real Graham's lone major league game occurred in June 1905,[26] rather than on the final day of the 1922 season. The real Graham died in 1965, as opposed to 1972 as the film depicts. In the film, Terence Mann interviews a number of people about Graham. The DVD special points out that the facts they gave him were taken from articles written about the real man. Release Universal scheduled Field of Dreams to open in the U.S. on April 21, 1989. The film debuted in just a few theaters and was gradually released to more screens so that it would have a spot among the summer blockbusters. It ended up playing until December.[8] The film was released in the Philippines by Eastern Films on November 1, 1989.[27] From sami.j.osborne97 at gmail.com Thu Mar 3 17:44:28 2022 From: sami.j.osborne97 at gmail.com (Sami Osborne) Date: Thu, 03 Mar 2022 12:44:28 -0500 Subject: [NABS-L] Using Gmail/KeyMail on my BrailleNote Touch Message-ID: <6220fe84.1c69fb81.1ecf1.af19@mx.google.com> Hi all, I hope this email finds each of you safe and well. I just received an email from Google implying (though obviously not directly stating) that I could loose access to my Gmail account using the KeyMail app with my BrailleNote Touch starting May 30. Their reasoning for this is so they can "make my Google account more secure." Has anyone else using a BrailleNote Touch received an email like this from Google? I would honestly be devastated at loosing access to my Gmail account, because I mostly rely on KeyMail for all my daily email activity (in fact it's what I'm using to type this email right now). I like KeyMail because of its very simple interface, making it far easier to do things such as move each of my emails to locations which are more convenient for me. I'm not really a big fan of the Gmail app/website because their interface is more complicated. Loosing access to my Google account would mean not only loosing my personal email address (which I'm using currently), but also my graduaffe school email, which is linked to my personal Gmail account. I'd greatly appreciate any and all suggestions you can offer for getting this issue resolved. It really boggles my mind how all the big tech companies claim to be improving the security and accessibility for all, but are in fact making things worse on the blind and visually impaired, who rely heavily on the accessibility of these technologies. If someone could share any contact information for Google to suggest they put a stop to this, I'd really appreciate this as well. I hope everyone has an enjoyable end of the week/weekend. Applications are being accepted until April 15. This year we will be awarding one scholarship for $2,000 and one scholarship for $1,500 to qualified applicants. In addition to the monetary award, winners will have the opportunity to attend the Annual Conventionof the National Federation of the Blind during July 5-10 at our expense in New Orleans this year. At the convention, scholarship winners will have the chance to meet other blind students from throughout the country and gain valuable insights into succeeding as blind people. Additionally, both winners are required, at our expense, to attend the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota convention in the fall, tentatively scheduled for November 4-6 in Bloomington, Minnesota. The scholarships will be presented at the banquet of this convention. Our state conventions were "virtual conventions" in 2020 and 2021, and a final decision will be made closer to the scheduled date whether our convention is virtual or we can meet in person. In either case, scholarships will be awarded. Candidates must be students who are legally blind and attending a post-secondary school full-time or part-time in Minnesota. In order to apply for a scholarship, complete the online application at https://nfbmn.org/scholarship-program. Be sure to include the additional required documents and send them to scholarships at nfbmn.org. You can also request a Microsoft Word version of the application by writing to mailto:Scholarships at nfbmn.org. If it is necessary to send this information on paper, mail to: NFB of Minnesota Scholarships 100 East 22nd Street Minneapolis, MN 55404 The following documents must also be supplied: 1. Personal essay from applicant. NFB scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic excellence and community/campus service and leadership. In your essay, discuss your academic and career goals as well as your academic, community, and/or employment experiences. Tell us about yourself and why you are a deserving recipient of the scholarship. Since the awards are restricted to legally blind people, the committee will also be interested in the techniques you use to succeed as a student who is blind. If you are a part time student, tell us how your part time status supports your educational goals. 2. Two letters of recommendation. You can send these via email to scholarships at nfbmn.org 3. Current official transcript from institution now attending and transcripts from all other post-secondary institutions attended. If you have not yet completed one year of college study, submit a transcript from the high school you previously attended. All applicants will be contacted by a member of the scholarship committee shortly after the application deadline. A telephone interview will give you the opportunity to tell the committee more about yourself and your goals for the future. Your application, essay, letters of recommendation, and transcript(s) must be received by April 15, 2022. If you or anyone else should have any questions regarding these awards, please contact the Scholarship Committee, at scholarships at nfbmn.org or call us at 612-872-9363. Additionally, the National Federation of the Blind offers 30 national scholarships each year. This is a completely separate program with a separate application process. The application deadline for that program is March 31, and arranging for an interview with our state president before the national deadline is required. It is known to be a great place for STEM students. My experiences with the disability office started off pretty rough. However, things have improved significantly. I advocated for the expansion of the disability office staffing. This helped make sure my accommodations were carried out in a timely manner. College is very frustrating for many (if not most) students with disabilities. It tends to be a struggle. However, I believe one can get out what they put in. Hope this helps. New Opportunities for Careers in Rehabilitation of the Blind Scholarships are now available! *** the GRE requirement may now be permanently waived for applicants who qualify *** Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness Louisiana Tech University Structured Discovery Cane Travel (SDCT) and Structured Discovery Rehabilitation have been demonstrated to be among the most innovative and effective forms of rehabilitation training for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Louisiana Tech University has operated its Orientation and Mobility program on this model successfully for 21 years, with upwards of 95% successful employment and employer satisfaction rates. Scholarships are now available for qualified individuals seeking one of the following degree paths: Master of Arts in Counseling/Guidance with Concentration in Orientation and Mobility. Master of Arts in Counseling and Guidance with Concentration in Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind Why me? The field of educating and rehabilitating children and adults who are blind is deeply rewarding and life-changing. The job market is wide open; currently, we receive four times the number of employer requests than we have graduates to provide. Training occurs on campus in Ruston, Louisiana, and can be completed in as little as one year. No prior background or experience in blindness is necessary—we’ll teach you everything you need to know. Scholarships are provided on a competitive basis to qualified persons and can cover costs for attending the university. Scholarships also support travel to conferences, trainings, and field-based experiences at Structured Discovery training programs. Who can Apply? Individuals must already possess a Bachelor’s (B.A.) degree from an accredited university, have a grade point average of 2.5 and obtain a minimum of 287 (Verbal and Quantitative) on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE)*. Individuals must also be willing to attend courses on campus in Ruston, Louisiana on a full-time basis. *Note: the GRE may now be waived for applicants who qualify. Please contact Edward Bell to determine if you are eligible at ebell at latech.edu What’s the Catch? Payback through service is required. Agreement to receive scholarship funding requires commitment for you to work in the field of rehabilitation for two years for each year of scholarship support you obtain. Scholarships cover at least tuition and fees but may cover living and travel costs as well. You have to move to Ruston, work hard, study harder, and have the heart to be an O&M or Rehabilitation Teacher of blind persons. Where do I get started? When I use the down arrow to navigate by line, VoiceOver speech does not read line by line. Each time I press the down arrow, VoiceOver begins reading from the start of the document. The Braille Display does show that the cursor is moving line by line down the document. However, on the Braille display, a new line appears as simply a space between words. Put another way, VoiceOver speech only reads the entire document each time I press the down arrow. THe Braille display makes it appear as if I am reading one continuous paragraph with no line breaks. I can however navigate line by line if I am within a table in word or using any other application. Has anyone encountered this before? This started seemingly happening randomly yesterday and I can't figure out if I accidentally changed some setting. I thought it might be that the VoiceOver and keyboard cursors are not synchronized, but this box is checked in settings. I've taken two biblical Greek classes, and I had a good experience with them. I got the textbook in Braille. Without that, I don't think I could have completed the classes. I was taking them online, and screen readers (at least JAWS and NVDA) do not seem to like Greek vowels with accents or breathing marks. I had some trouble with the tests, but the accessibility department was able to add audio files to the test that had someone reading the question. So by listening, I was able to work through the questions. I haven't taken Hebrew, but I know a pastor who is blind that has used both Braille Greek and Hebrew. Feel free to email me with any other questions or if you want more details. I studied Ancient Greek for five semesters. For all your transcription needs and help, contact Sara Blake Larose. Here is her email. sarah at sarahblakelarose.com I don't think it's any more visual than any other language. Your professor probably thinks its visual because it uses the Greek alphabet instead of the Latin one. Beyond that, s/he is probably worried about the charts and paradigms that they use, but Sara or another transcriber can make those in a table format for you. Both of my universities paid for it, but if they refuse for some reason, talk to her and she will work it out with you. Just make sure you have double time on any evaluations. It will most likely take you longer to do the assignments, not because Greek will be harder for you, but navigating between the charts, the text your reading, and looking up vocab words I think is harder for us. There's just a lot to juggle. Sighted people have to do this too, but they can more easily browse dictionaries by flipping through pages. Unless you get everything in hardcopy braille, which I don't recommend, you'll either have to browse through .brf files, or use an online dictionary. With an online dictionary, you have to type in a word in the format that it wants, which I never figured out. I depended on websites like Perseus and TLG. Both had the texts that I was reading, and I could click on a word to look it up. Perseus, though, is less dependable with definitions than TLG. Additionally, some professors won't let students use Perseus and TLG on exams because they both provide grammatical information, which kind of defeats the point. Sighted people also have a easier time browsing charts because they can travel straight down the column. Because these are .brf files, there's not an easy way to do that. There are jaws scripts that allow you to read Ancient Greek on the computer with a braille display, which makes navigating charts easier, but I liked using the .brf charts better, despite the fact that they were slower. If you know computer braille, or can pick up a few easy tricks like I had to do, then it makes searching through .brf files in notepad on your computer. Why would you read them on your computer and not a braille display? Because if you're using Perseus or TLG, or your professor didn't send the assignment off in time for it to be transcribed, then it ends up being a hybrid situation. If your professors send you digital Greek assignments, they cannot send you scanned files. As of now, no screenreader recognizes Ancient Greek with OCR. they have to be typed out. I never had a professor send me scanned Greek, but I did warn them ahead of time so maybe that's why. You do have some advantages over your sighted peers. Because UEB braille relies on the Latin alphabet, the Greek alphabet translates more easily. For example, the a symbol is alpha, b for beta, k for kappa, etc. The tricky part is accents. All of Ancient Greek braille is uncontracted, so the contractions serve as accents, or in some cases letters. For example, the th sign is for theta. Your class will spend maybe a week on the alphabet, and most students will still be looking at charts for a couple weeks after that. It took me about three days to get it. The accents were trickier for me than they were for my sighted peers, but it still didn't take me long. I hope this is helpful. Sara is around to answer questions, even if she can't help transcribe for some reason. You can always reach out to me if you have questions or need help. Or if you just want to rant. Trust me, Greek will probably make you angry, frustrated, and you might ask yourself if it's really worth it. You might have weeks where you want to throw it all a way, or have panic attacks. Luckily, it's not because your a blind person learning Greek. It's because Greek is hard, and your sighted peers will be having the same experiences. I did my best in Greek when I partnered up with a sighted person, and when we complemented each other. Where I was weak, she was strong, and vice versa. We could also look up things faster that way. I often focused on grammar and she would look up vocab. Hopefully, you can find a good partner. I hope this helps. I know this probably wasn't comforting, but you're taking Greek, so you must be okay with discomfort. Come to this last meeting to learn more about self-care and the dimensions of wellness. Whether you provide self-care very well or need some ideas, this meeting is for you! Come and share your ideas! Learn from others and gain a network of supporters within the blind parents group! You did not have to attend previous meetings in order to attend this one. You do not need to live in Pennsylvania to attend as parenting does not have state boundaries so we do not think our meetings should either! 😊 We just ask that you come with an open heart and some listening ears! This is an interactive meeting with a certified trainer in the Triple P (Powers of Positive Parenting) program. *For more information*, please contact Stacie Leap, Chair of the NFB of PA’s Blind Parents Group at stacie.leap at gmail.com or 215-776-6741. *About the Speaker:* Valerie Anderson is a certified facilitator for the Power of Positive Parenting (Triple P Program). She has a Master Degree in Social Work and works part time as a parenting group facilitator at Turning Points for Children’s Project F.A.M. Parenting Program for the past 7 years. Her group facilitation skills include working with a variety of parents (i.e., women in recovery, teen parents, early childhood parents…) in a variety of settings throughout the city of Philadelphia. *Overview of Triple P Program:* The Triple P Program is an evidence- based program focused on parenting children from the age 2-12 years old. It provides parents with positive parenting techniques and strategies to teach children the skills to be independent, manage their feelings, solve problems, and communicate to get along with others. It has a cognitive behavior approach to parenting to help children as well as parents make goals for change. Parents will be able to develop their own personalized plans for positive parenting strategies. I'm curious how the blind pastor did Hebrew and Greek (textbooks, tests, assignments, etc.) For both languages I have two options: a totally internet-based course with an online professor or a live classroom course on the internet. I'm sure I could work out a way to do oral exams. Right now, I'm attending New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary online. I'm working toward a M.A. in Christian Apologetics. Even tough Hebrew and Greek aren't required, I'm thinking about learning them because I want to evangelize members of other religions and teach folks in the church how to do so. After New Orleans, I'm going to apply to Dallas Theological Seminary to get a Th.M. They'll let some courses transfer over and I figured if I did Hebrew and Greek at New Orleans, this would give me less to take at Dalls. Right now, I have a 4.0 at New Orleans; and, as much as I'm considering taking Hebrew and Greek, I'd hate to have that be what makes the 4.0 disappear. Maybe I oughta wait until Dallas ... So by listening, I was able to work through the questions. I haven't taken Hebrew, but I know a pastor who is blind that has used both Braille Greek and Hebrew. Hi everyone, I'm writing to see if there's anyone on the listserv who have or are currently taking Hebrew and/or Greek at a Bible college or seminary. I've spoken with a former seminary professor who told me the languages are very visual. How visual are they? What types of accommodations have you requested and gotten for these classes? Any recommendations and suggestions about how I can successfully take these courses and do well would be very much appreciated. I know there's a way; I just have to figure out how as I did with Logic a few years ago. Thanks. The last time I had to make a poster of this kind was about a year ago, so not super up-to-date, but in short, I think the best way to accomplish this task is working with a sghted assistant. I think having a general idea of the layout and how you want to display your content and then communicating that to the person helping you would be the most efficient way to get this done. I would also ask that person to give you feedback on aesthetics and readability and make your decisions on style, font, etc. accordingly. I don't recommend doing the exams orally, but since Sarah has worked with many Greek and Hebrew students, she can tell you about the pros and cons of each method. I know that there are audio recordings of the New Testament in Ancient Greek, and I'm sure someone has read it slowly enough that you could understand it. But the advantage of doing it in braille is that you can look up vocab words and grammar online, or via the .brf resources already available. I'm not sure how that would work with audio. I guess you would have to hire a reader that has good Greek pronunciation, or do your assignments with a professor. I am coming from a slightly different perspective though. My first two years were in Attic Greek, and I had to read Plato and Homer. My fifth semester was in Liturgical Greek, which meant reading poetry, literary fifth century Greek, and some other stuff ranging from the fifth to the fourteenth century. Biblical Greek is much simpler than all that. The vocab is easier, and the grammatical structure is easier to pick up on since the style is more consistent. St. Paul is more challenging than the other writers, but still, once you get used to his style, you should be okay. This may make it more feasible to do orally. Again, Sarah should be able to tell you what method works best. On 3/20/2022 12:58 AM, Mike Gilmore via NABS-L wrote: > > Hi Luke, > > Thanks for your response. Because you're looking into a THM at another seminary, your 4.0 isn't that big of a deal. As long as you don't wreck it, you should get in the program, unless it's very competitive. It depends on what kind of THM program it is, but I would think that having some basic knowledge of Hebrew and Greek would be better going in, since it's an advanced program, though that depends on how much the program relies on the languages. I recommend talking to someone from admissions. they could give you some useful tips. On 3/20/2022 12:58 AM, Mike Gilmore via NABS-L wrote: > > Hi Luke, > > Thanks for your response. I'm at Midwestern Seminary, so sort of a sister school. Let me reach out to my pastor friend and see if I can get you connected. I'm totally blind and I took the Greek classes completely online. I had a Greek textbook and I've gotten the Greek New Testament in Braille. I think Justin mentioned Sarah Blake Larose--she's awesome. Had a real good experience getting the Greek New Testament from her. Like I said, I'll reach out to my pastor friend and get back with you soon. Hi Luke, Thanks for your response. Thanks. She is collecting feedback for her project and I said that I would pass it along to others who might have some input. Her deadline is Friday --- so whatever anyone who has feedback can do, that will be helpful. Email from the student at Wentworth below: Good morning, My name is Brie DuMont, I am a senior Industrial Design student at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston and am currently working on my senior thesis. I picked this project because I am very much interested in exhibit design and experience-based design, and I did a project last year for a Human Factors class that was based around different impairments, one of them being visual, and how that can affect design choices. When I was researching for this project I found there was a lack of major inclusion for people with visual impairments in experience design at places such as aquariums, zoos, and museums. I ended up narrowing it down to just aquariums as that seemed to offer more opportunities and I have connections to the marine biology world. The answers to the survey will be used in my research presentation, and I am collecting the Names, Ages, and Visual Impairment levels (however the person would like to best describe it) of the people who take the survey. The rest of the questions all pertain to what makes things easier to interact with, favorite/least favorite textures, best forms of communications, and then their experiences with aquariums (such as favorite/least favorite parts, what they wish they could interact with more, and anything they wish they could add to an aquarium). I may not use every participant's individual answers, especially if I get a bunch of responses, the answers may just be used in graphs/statistics, but I will most likely pull a few individual answers to highlight details that may be important to where I take this project or that highlight something I may not have thought of/seen in my research. If anyone is uncomfortable putting their Name/Age they could just put Jane/John Doe and N/A for the age, I would prefer if they could describe their level of visual impairment, either by describing it themselves or using legal/doctor terms whichever is best for them. The deadline would be by Friday (March 25th). Link to online survey about Experiencing Aquariums with a Visual Impairment [Image removed by sender.] Aquarium & Visual Impairment Survey Hello! Personally, I don't see the harm in asking the waiter/waitress to read you the menu once you enter the restaurant. That's part of their job; they're in charge of not only taking customer's orders, but also answering any and all questions they might have about the different food/drinks. You have to interact with the waiter or waitress when he or she situates you at a table as well as when you place your order, when your food is served, and when you're paying the bill (as well as if you order a dessert if applicable). If you walk in by yourself with your cane or guide dog, they'd most likely be more than willing to help you out. Additionally, if you're at the restaurant with a friend or family member, he/she can just read you the menu if they're sighted. I've visited several restaurants over the course of my life, both on my own as well as with friends and family. Most (if not all) of the wait staff have been exceptionally friendly, regardless of whether or not I've asked them to help me out personally. I know I'm probably going way over the top with answering a relatively simple question, but I just wanted to point out that there are multiple ways of knowing what's on the restaurant menu. I know inaccessible websites are frustrating in general for all of us, but you don't have to necessarily know the different food options in advance. Yes, it can be helpful, particularly if you're traveling in a large group setting. However, I personally don't view accessibility (or lack thereof) of restaurant websites as a huge stumbling blocks given the multiple methods you can go by. In my 24 plus years of life, I've only ever visited one (1) restaurant that had a Braille menu, and that was Legal Seafood in Lexington, Mass., where my paternal grandparents used to live before they passed away. As others have stated before me, privately-owned/family-owned restaurants don't normally consider accessibility as a top priority, and in fact I learned in college (when I did a report on the ADA for one of my classes) that these types of venues are not covered under the ADA; only public entities are. Once again, my apologies for rambling, but I do hope what I'm saying makes some sense here. Thanks, and I hope everyone has a great weekend. I agree with walking into a restaurant and talking to the waiter about the food that's served there. Whenever I go into a restaurant with other blind people, if there is a braille menu avalible, we'll use it, but only whenever they're avalible. Since they are not usually there, we'll usually ask the waiter about the food offered which includes the drinks and desserts. There are apps that can aid in knowing the food that's on the menu and sometimes, we'll use those apps such as AIRA, BlindSquare, Happy Menu or even websites if they're accessible. Since there is no standard to my knowledge regarding the rules of making things accessible other than that they should be accessible, there is no standard on how to make menus accessible since the American's with Disabilities Act was written before the internet took off, but was also not properly updated, the avalible matereals out there are patchy at best. When I happen to be with sighted people in a restaurant such as with my family, I'll take the opportunity to let them read me the menu, especially in cases where I don't know what I want going into the restaurant. If I know what I want because I had already been at a particular restaurant, or if I have an idea of what I want based on the theme of the restaurant, I'll go ahead and work my orders based on that instead. For example, if I know that I'm going to eat Mexican food, I'll usually start with a bean and cheese burrito and work my order from that base and go out from there. In cases where I know what I want or have an idea of what I want, I usually don't require a menu of any form because I have enough of a sense of what I want to get started. Even if I don't know what spasific food that is being offered, I like to at least know the theme of the restaurant because that theme gives you a lot of information about what foods are likely going to be on the menu. I hope this helps! T. Barnum and his tailor father, Philo, work for the Hallett family. Barnum falls for the Halletts' daughter Charity. When Charity attends finishing school, she and Barnum write to each other until reuniting as adults. They eventually marry and raise two daughters, Caroline and Helen, in New York City. They live a humble life; though Charity is happy, Barnum craves more ("A Million Dreams"). Barnum loses his shipping clerk job when the company goes bankrupt. He later secures a bank loan, deceptively using his former employer's lost ships as "collateral". He opens Barnum's American Museum in downtown Manhattan which features various wax figures. Ticket sales are slow, so Caroline and Helen suggest showcasing something "alive". Barnum adds "freak" performers, such as bearded lady Lettie Lutz and dwarf man Charles Stratton. This garners higher attendance, but also protests and poor reviews from well-known critic James Gordon Bennett ("Come Alive"). Barnum renames his venture, "Barnum's Circus" and recruits playwright Phillip Carlyle to help generate publicity ("The Other Side"). Phillip is mesmerized by the African American trapeze artist, Anne Wheeler, but he hides his feelings. While touring abroad, Phillip arranges for Barnum and his troupe to meet Queen Victoria. Barnum persuades famed Swedish singer Jenny Lind to tour America, with him as her manager. Lind's American debut is a success. During her song, Phillip's parents see him and Anne holding hands ("Never Enough"). As Barnum gains favor with aristocratic patrons, he distances himself from his troupe, advising them to work without him. Dejected, they decide to stand against their local harassers ("This Is Me"). When Phillip and Anne attend the theater together, they run into Phillip's parents. They chastise him for "parading around with the help". Phillip tries to convince Anne that they can be together, but she disagrees, saying they will never be accepted socially because of her skin colour ("Rewrite the Stars"). As Barnum takes Lind on a U.S. tour, Charity, who stays home with the girls, feels isolated from her husband ("Tightrope"). While on tour, Lind becomes romantically attracted to Barnum. When he rebuffs her, she threatens to quit and later retaliates with a surprise kiss at the end of her last show, which is photographed by the press. Barnum returns home to find his circus on fire, caused by a fight between protesters and the troupe. Phillip runs into the burning building to save Anne, not knowing that she has already escaped. He suffers serious injuries before Barnum rescues him. Barnum learns the culprits have been caught and that Lind has cancelled her tour after her and Barnum's "scandal". Barnum's mansion is foreclosed upon and Charity takes the girls to her parents' home. Devastated, Barnum retreats to a local bar. His troupe finds him there and say that despite their disappointments, they still consider themselves a family. Inspired, he resolves to build a new show and not let ambition rule him ("From Now On"). Phillip awakens in a hospital with Anne by his side, while Barnum and Charity reconcile. A recovering Phillip offers his share of the profits to help Barnum rebuild the circus in exchange for becoming a full partner, which Barnum readily accepts. To economize, Barnum transforms the enterprise into an open-air tent circus. The revamped circus is a huge success and Barnum has Phillip take his place as the ringmaster so the former can spend more time with his family. Barnum leaves the circus early and arrives on an elephant to attend Caroline and Helen's ballet recital ("The Greatest Show"). The movie ends with a quote from P.T. Barnum that reads "The noblest art is that of making people happy". Cast Hugh Jackman as P. T. Barnum, an ambitious showman and entrepreneur Ellis Rubin as Young Barnum Ziv Zaifman provides Young Barnum's singing voice[8] Zac Efron as Phillip Carlyle, a playwright who becomes Barnum's partner Michelle Williams as Charity Hallett-Barnum, the wife of P. Barnum Skylar Dunn as Young Charity Rebecca Ferguson as Jenny Lind, a famous Swedish singer known as the "Swedish Nightingale" Loren Allred provides Lind's singing voice.[9] Zendaya as Anne Wheeler, an acrobat, a trapeze artist, W.D.'s younger sister and Phillip's love interest.
