Message-ID: <016f01d8d687$fd66ee60$f834cb20$@gmail.com> The National Federation of the Blind of Maryland is holding a Fall donation drive to support our work. >From December 3 to 10, 2023, NFBMD will be hosting Blind Cruising 2023, which is a 7-night cruise on the Carnival Legend to the Eastern Caribbean. Individuals may book passage directly with our travel agent, with a portion of cabin costs going to NFBMD. Those interested may find information at http://www.nfbmd.org/blindcruising. Additionally, we will hold a cruise drawing at the NFBMD Convention Banquet on November 12, 2022. The winner will receive a balcony cabin for two on the Carnival Legend for the sailing scheduled to depart Baltimore from December 3 - 10, 2023, which is the sailing where Blind Cruising 2023 will take place. Individuals do not need to be present to win. The rules for the drawing are as follows: 1. For each $20 donated, the donor will receive one chance. For example, if the donor contributes $100, that equates to 5 chances. 2. The donor must expressly state that they wish to have their name placed in the cruise drawing. 3. Donations must be made separately from any door prize contributions, convention registration donations, or theater/Hamilton donations. 4. Donations must be received on or before November 5, 2022. My favorite way of interviewing someone was to use my Braille Note. I would paste the questions in a document, transfer the document onto my note taker, and write as they answered below the appropriate question. I did phone interviews, but I always preferred using my note taker so that I wasn't listening to a screen reader and the person I was interviewing at the same time. While you are working on your Braille, you could use a computer. Mostly taking notes on an interview is about typing, not reading. Just keep an earbud in one ear, face the laptop away or slightly close the lid, and look at your client while you type. Then later you can correct any errors. That way you can listen to each question, ask it, and then type away as they are talking. Hope this helps. I have worked a job at a human services org for 1.5 years now. I'm also getting my Doctorate in clinical psych. I only bring those two things up because intake/ interviewing is a pretty big part of what I do and will do in the future :) I use my laptop for this, preferrably with the questionnaire in a word doc. I just type notes next to or below each question. As for being attentive, I focus on my body language, still looking toward the client, having an open facial expression, etc. It's very normal in my program to give each other feedback on these things, whether blind or sighted. So that is definitely something you can ask someone, how did I appear in that practice interview? I don't record my interviews for obvious confidentiality reasons, which is why note taking, as you said, is a huge part of it. Happy to chat more. Good luck. It can help to try to take notes on a conversation outside of the interviewing context. I know I have done this for the testing part of my classes. I'm sure a friend or someone would not mind just making small talk or even answering a fake questionnaire with you. You'll get good at listening and jotting down answers while remaining engaged. Unfortunately, the guy indicates that we should "View the attached document" to get more info, but I'm not seeing any attachments in this email. However, he did say this internship is with the federal government, which would actually fit with my current endeavors. I'm currently a graduate student pursuing my master's in translation and interpreting from NYU, and there are actually a lot of interpreters working in federal governments all around the world. Unfortunately, it's not clear to me at this point what kinds of jobs are provided to interns just from this description alone. Are you able to reach out to this guy and ask if they're going to be training language translators/interpreters? If so, then I might definitely consider applying for this internship. It sounds very interesting. Feel free to let me know what he tells you once you've reached out to him, either on this list or responding to me privately. Thanks for your attention and understanding. How blessed are we to be in the position where we can affect change at the state level and promote the independence and achievement of our membership and blind people nationwide over the next thirty days. All over the country as you read this, blind people in state affiliates around the country are working on different ways in which the public can be educated on the great work the Federation does to increase expectations for blind people and to ascertain that our access to parts of everyday life, simple and complex, are made possible. This year, the NFB of Michigan is focused on the resurgence of blind youth, families and parents in our affiliate. This is being done through the active work we've done to allocate funding for programs for families to attend during the fall, our programming at our state convention and the creation of our youth planning committee, which will work on future projects for the year. This month, however, our fundraising committee and state affiliate wants YOUR help! The NFB of Michigan's Six Dot Stride fundraiser is now live and we invite you all to sign up to take the stride with blind families as we turn dreams into realities. The Six Dot Stride is a virtual walk-a-thon fundraiser where members can sign up to walk for our cause and promote the fundraiser to their friends for support. This is a virtual fundraiser, which means we don't want you accepting money from donors, rather have donors pledge their donations using the Rally Up platform link that we are providing. Our state website has a landing page that explains the rules of the fundraiser, the cause for the campaign and the rules for how you or your donors can qualify for prizes. Remember, you will NOT be considered for a prize if you do not participate, so putting some skin in the game will be the only way you will have a shot. Speaking of prizes, let's talk about them: * RayCon Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds (Prize for Highest Donor Pledge) * Apple TV 4k Streaming Device (Prize for NFB Member that Raises the Most in Pledges) * $50 Visa Gift Card (Prize Awarded to Two Members that Walk the Most on November 5) Remember, to be a part of the fun, you must be a part of the fun. So, when you look at the prizes, know that there are some rules associated with them. Participants must sign up to promote and take part in the virtual walkathon by October 15 to be considered for a prize, but the donor that sends in the highest pledge will be determined on November 5 and have their ear buds shipped to them. As part of this project, we're conducting an anonymous survey (https://bit.ly/disability-language-survey) that should take about 5 minutes to fill out. While I'm not familiar with Ohio per say, since Uber and Lyft are not available to go where you want, you may consider inquiring if there is a local car service in Columbus that will be willing to drive you there. These are called Sedan services, limousine services, or something like that. I'd suggest using Google Maps to lookup such places before you travel and then call them to discuss your options. I'd also suggest looking up businesses in the town you're going to to see if they might have a service that would be willing to meet you at the train station. Failing that, you might be able to use a cab from the train station to get there. Again, I suggest calling the local cab company in Columbus before you travel. I want to stress that none of these options wil be cheap, but they will probably be effective. A final consideration to think about is how you plan to do your return trip. Unfortunately, while I'm highly confident you can get to your friend's town via some form of hired transportation, I'm less sure you can get back. I have a friend, for example, who lives in rural Tennessee whom I visit regularly. It's pretty easy to get there via a hired car, but it's nearly impossible to get back from there using the same technique. Hope that helps. -Brian On Oct 17, 5:50pm, nesma aly via NABS-L wrote: } Subject: [NABS-L] Best way to navigate ohio } Hi all, } } I hope everyone is well and is having a good midterm season. } I am writing to ask for you’alls suggestions. } I am planning to see a friend in november. He and I both traveled from out of town; I'm from New York and he's from Nebraska, but we actually decided to travel to Houston, Texas because we were curious what it was like down there. I know you're visiting your friend in Ohio where he or she is from, but maybe what you guys could do is stay at a hotel together, so that way you can almost guarantee you'll be together. I know this might sound silly, but this friend I mentioned, along with myself, will be traveling to visit another friend of ours who lives in Los Angeles in January. The three of us will all be staying in the same hotel room even though the mutual friend lives in LA, and I don't think his house is big enough to accommodate more people; he lives with his parents and three younger sisters. I believe his parents will be picking us all up from the airport once we land in California, and then bring us all over to the hotel. I'm not sure if this sounds feasible for you, but my friend from Nebraska has always dreamed of pursuing a career as a hotel manager, so he's more of an expert of different hotels in different areas. Maybe what you and your friend could do is research different hotels in the area you're staying in, and then discuss your findings and see if you can come up with a hotel you can both agree upon. This really would depend on different factors such as the price as well as the quality of different hotel rooms available. If there are two of you staying in the same room, you can both split the cost so you wouldn't have to waist your money by having to pay the total cost (hotel prices are notoriously expensive nowadays). Plus, the prices are generally cheaper the more people are included on the same reservation, and thus more people to split the cost. I hope this helps. I think, when you're visiting friends (perhaps especially blind friends, though I'm unsure if yours is blind or sighted), and making sure everyone is always in the same place during the visit, could really avoid all hassle associated with trying to get from one place to the other without the other present. I hope you have a wonderful time visiting your friend in Ohio. The Blind Parents Group of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania is continuing their discussion series of the Habits of Highly Effective Families. It is a discussion based on the book by Stephen Covey, *"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families: Building a Beautiful Family Culture in a Turbulent World."* You can find the book in BARD mobile, Audible, Kindle, and Apple books. This month, we are focusing on Habit 4 & 5: *Habit 4: Think Win-Win* Have an “everyone can win” attitude within your family. Embrace an attitude of abundance and search for third alternatives so that everyone feels valued. *Habit 5: Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood* The deepest need of each family member is to be understood, for understanding affirms the intrinsic worth of another. Not seeking to understand leads to judgement, rejection and manipulation. Empathic listening opens the doors to real bonding. Whether you are a blind parent, a parent of blind children, a prospective parent, or a supporter of any kind, we hope you can attend! You do not have to read the book to come and participate! Carrigan and her lawyer Dibs find a map within the will's papers that tell of an alleged treasure hidden inside the manor, but find the property haunted by a ghost named Casper and his poltergeist uncles the Ghostly Trio. They unsuccessfully attempt to force the ghosts out by way of paranormal experts and a demolitions team. A lonely Casper watches a news report about paranormal therapist James Harvey and is instantly smitten with his teenage daughter, Kat, prompting Casper to inspire Carrigan in summoning James to Whipstaff. Kat dislikes her father's reputation and obsession with contacting the ghost of his late wife, Amelia. The Harveys move into Whipstaff, but Casper's attempt to befriend them fails when his uncles try to torment and scare them away, which eventually fails. Casper gains the Harveys' trust when he serves them breakfast, and follows Kat to school, where she becomes popular when her class learns she is living in Whipstaff, and agrees to host their Halloween party there. Her envious classmate Amber plots with her friend, Vic (who Kat has a crush on), to humiliate Kat during the party. James attempts therapy sessions with the Ghostly Trio, who not only try to avoid them, but also reveal they know Amelia; in exchange for convincing Carrigan to leave them alone, they promise to go through the "red tape" involved to get James a meeting with his wife. Kat learns Casper has no memory of his life, and restores his old playroom in the attic to remind him. Casper recognizes an old wooden sled his father bought him, and remembers playing outside until he caught a severe cold and died of pneumonia, becoming a ghost to keep his father company. A newspaper article reveals that Casper's father was declared legally insane after he built a machine, the Lazarus, which he claimed could bring the dead back to life. Casper and Kat venture to the basement and find the Lazarus. Carrigan and Dibs sneak inside, steal the formula that powers the Lazarus, and plot to use the machine, believing it could grant them immortality. However, they attempt to kill each other to test the theory and retrieve the treasure they think is in the basement's locked vault. This culminates in Carrigan attempting to run Dibs over with her Range Rover, only to instead crash into a cliff-side tree. Upon exiting her car, Carrigan falls to her death and becomes a ghost. James becomes despondent after the trio pull a prank on him, prompting them to take him out on the town. They plan on killing him to make themselves a quartet, but have a change of heart after the drunken therapist declares he will tell Carrigan off so they can stay in their home. However, while still drunk, James accidentally falls to his death down a manhole. In the laboratory, a furious ghostly Carrigan confronts Casper and Kat, stealing what she believes to be the treasure from the vault and launching Dibs out a window when he tries to double-cross her. As Carrigan demands to be brought back to life, Casper and Kat trick Carrigan into saying that she has no unfinished business on Earth, causing her to eject herself into the afterlife. After Carrigan's ghost disintegrates and disappears, the chest she had been holding falls to the floor and the lid opens, revealing the treasure inside to be Casper's prized baseball, signed by Duke Snider; the map was part of a game Casper played with his father. James, now a ghost and still in his drunken state, returns with Casper's uncles and after bringing him back to his senses, Kat's despair over this prompts Casper to sacrifice his one chance to return to life, restoring James instead. The Halloween party kicks off upstairs; Amber and Vic's prank is thwarted by the Ghostly Trio, and they flee in terror. Amelia, now an angel, meets with Casper alone in his toy room, crediting him for his bravery and sacrifice, and grants him a Cinderella-type deal that he can have until ten o'clock back as his younger, physical self, allowing him to attend the party and dance with Kat. Amelia meets with James and tells him that she was so content with her family while alive that she has no unfinished business, and encourages him to move on, while explaining that the Ghostly Trio kept their promise to get him a meeting with her. Amelia departs as the clock chimes ten, promising James that they and Kat will be together again one day and, after kissing Kat, Casper transforms back into a ghost, scaring off the guests. Kat, nonetheless, is impressed with the party, which James says is not over, cueing the Ghostly Trio to play their nephew's theme for them to dance to. Cast Malachi Pearson as the voice of Casper McFadden, a lonely ghost who was originally a 12-year-old boy who died of pneumonia. He spends most of his afterlife in Whipstaff, dealing with his ghostly ghoulish uncles' antics while hoping to find a friend. He finds one in Kat, while also developing a crush on her. Devon Sawa portrays Casper in his human form Christina Ricci as Kathleen "Kat" Harvey, James' 13-year-old daughter and Casper's love interest who has lost her mother and wants to make a friend. Before Ricci was cast, Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst were both considered. Before Moriarty was cast, Glenn Close, Kathleen Turner, Carrie Fisher, Miranda Richardson, Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Pfeiffer were all considered. Joe Nipote as the voice of Stretch, the leading member of the Ghostly Trio and one of Casper's uncles who bonds with Dr. Harvey. Bob has a brother named Buck. In contrast to the Russells' upper middle class lifestyle, Buck lives in a small apartment in Wrigleyville, drinks, smokes cigars, earns his living by betting on rigged horse races, and drives a dilapidated 1977 Mercury. Buck also finds himself at odds with his girlfriend of eight years, Chanice. She wants to get married and start a family, but Buck is reluctant to do so as he loves his lifestyle. To quell her dissatisfaction, Buck has grudgingly accepted a new job at her tire shop. At 12:02 AM, the family receives a phone call from Cindy's aunt in Indianapolis informing them that her father has had a heart attack. They make plans to leave immediately to be with him. After hearing the news, Tia, bitter about being forced to move, accuses Cindy of abandoning her father. Bob suggests asking Buck to come and watch the children, to which Cindy objects as she considers Buck a bad influence and a failure. Cindy suggests asking their neighbors the Nevilles for help instead while also shooting down the idea of their neighbor Marcie watching them, but Bob finds they are holidaying in Florida. Buck cheerfully accepts the job when Bob calls him. When he informs Chanice that he cannot start his job yet due to the family emergency, Chanice assumes Buck is trying as usual to lie his way out of working. Upon arriving, Buck deals with Cindy's cold demeanor towards him and finds himself cropped out of Bob and Cindy's wedding picture. Nevertheless, he quickly befriends Miles and Maizy, but Tia is brash and hostile as they engage in a battle of wills. When Buck meets Tia's cocky obnoxious boyfriend Bug, he warns her that Bug is only interested in her for sex and repeatedly thwarts her plans to sneak away on dates with him. Over the next several days, he deals with several situations in comedic fashion, including taking the kids to his favourite bowling alley, making enormous pancakes for Miles' birthday, removing the drunk Pooter the Clown from the property, berating assistant principal Anita Hoargarth about Maizy's behavior in class, and handling the laundry when the washing machine does not work. Eventually, Tia exacts revenge on Buck for meddling in her relationship by tricking Chanice into thinking that Buck is cheating on her with Marcie. The next day, Chanice comes over to confront Buck about what she heard, but is furious to find Buck dancing with Marcie in the living room. Chanice leaves him. The following weekend, concerned after Tia sneaks out to a party, Buck decides to go looking for her rather than attend a horse race which would have provided him with enough money for the entire following year. He calls and begs Chanice to watch Miles and Maizy as he searches for Tia. At the party, thinking that Bug is taking advantage of her in a bedroom, he forces the door open by drilling out the lock, but walks in on Bug forcing himself on another girl. After he finds Tia wandering the streets, she tearfully apologizes to him and acknowledges he was right about Bug. Buck then reveals Bug, bound and gagged with duct tape, in the trunk of his car. After intimidating him, Buck lets Bug out of the trunk to apologize to her. When Bug is finally released, he threatens to sue Buck and retracts his apology, but flees in fear after Buck strikes him with a golf ball. At home, Tia helps Buck reconcile with Chanice by admitting her lie and tells Chanice that Buck would be a good husband and father. Buck also agrees to start his job at the garage, and he and Chanice reunite. Cindy's father recovers and she and Bob return home from Indianapolis. Upon entering the house, Tia surprises her mother with a hug. The entire Russell family says farewell to Buck and Chanice as they leave for Chicago, with Buck and Tia exchanging a loving wave goodbye. Cast John Candy as Buck Russell, a bachelor who babysits his brother's kids. Jean Louisa Kelly as Tia Russell, the oldest daughter of Bob and Cindy. Laurie Metcalf as Marcie Dahlgren-Frost, the neighbor of the Russells who lives across the street. Jay Underwood as Bug, Tia's boyfriend. Gaby Hoffmann as Maizy Russell, the youngest daughter of Bob and Cindy. Elaine Bromka as Cindy Russell, the wife of Bob. Garrett M. Brown as Bob Russell, the brother of Buck. Suzanne Shepherd as Anita Hoargarth, the strict assistant principal of Maizy's school. Mike Starr as Pooter the Clown, a birthday clown who Buck rejects for being drunk. Brian Tarantina as E. That's Right! Apply NOW for the 2023 NFB of Missouri's Scholarship Program Message-ID: Attention students! Are you looking for scholarships? Are you a senior in high school planning on attending college next year? Are you currently in college looking for ways to offset your educational expenses? If you could answer to the questions above, the time is NOW to apply for the 2023 NFB of Missouri’s scholarship program. Please see message below and direct any questions to Robin House, chair of the scholarship committee. We hope to host a Q&A session in the near future, answering any questions you may have about the program. National Federation of the Blind of Missouri 2023 Scholarship Program The National Federation of the Blind of Missouri announces our 2023 Scholarship Program. We will be accepting applications until February 1, 2023. We invite all qualified candidates to apply. Applicants must be legally blind and plan to enroll in a post-secondary institution for the fall of 2023. Applicants should live in Missouri but need not be a member of the National Federation of the Blind. Scholarships begin at $750 and are based on merit. We invite applicants to submit all information and documents online. All application materials must be received by February 1, 2023, either through the online form found at www.nfbmo.org or at the email address provided below. Acknowledgment of applications and documents will be sent upon receipt. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Scholarship Chair. A complete application consists of the official application form and a student essay, plus these supporting documents: student transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a letter from an NFB of Missouri Scholarship Committee member, and proof of legal blindness. Please note that letters of recommendation must not be submitted by the applicant but must come directly from the person authoring the recommendation. In an effective essay the applicant may consider sharing about his or her life in a way that gives the committee insight into him or her. The essay should cover the ways in which one lives successfully as a blind person and describe personal goals for the future. Committee members give the essay a great deal of attention. In addition to receiving the monetary award, the scholarship Finalist will attend the convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri, April 14-16, 2023, at the Hilton Airport Hotel in St. Louis, MO. Hotel accommodations, convention registration, and planned meals during the convention will be included. We are also happy to help coordinate transportation to ensure this is not a barrier to our scholarship class. The type of transportation assistance may vary based on where in Missouri the winner resides and the available transportation resources in that community. Throughout the convention, scholarship winners will have an opportunity to learn about the National Federation of the Blind and network with successful blind people. In addition, final interviews with the Scholarship Committee will aid the committee in determining the scholarship each winner will receive. You should know that merit scholarships from the National Federation of the Blind go directly to the winner and should not be considered as a similar benefit by Rehabilitation Services for the Blind. Therefore, students can use funds to meet expenses that other funding sources do not cover. Also, merit scholarships are viewed favorably when included on a resume. The application can be found on the NFB of Missouri website. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact the scholarship chair. Our facilitators will review the book as well as have reflection questions! Just come with an open mind and an open heart! You do not have to live in Pennsylvania to join our meeting. Parenting has no geographical barriers so we do not think our meetings should either! *Topic:* Habits of Highly Effective Families *Facilitators:* Yvonne Hughes and Stacie Leap *Date:* Saturday, October 29, 2022 *Time:* 7PM to 8:30PM ET *Location:* Zoom Information is below! Thanks to many incredibly generous members, we reached our $1000 fundraising goal and, 5 Leaders received a pie to the face. The $200 goal was IABS president Ellen Bartelt. Once we reach $200 our affiliate president Marilyn Green, challenged us to raise $100 in three minutes so that, Sara Luna, first vice president would receive a pie to the face. The $100 was Reyes so, Sara became the second recipient. The $400 goal was NFB of Illinois secretary and IABS board member Deborah Stine. The $600 goal was IABS secretary and 2022 national scholarship recipient Teresa Fabre. The $800 goal was our national Association of Blind students representative Elizabeth Rouse. Our original $1000 goal was national representative Adelmo Vigil,. however, the convention voted to donate an additional $100 to spare him from receiving a pie to the face. The Illinois Association of blind students ultimately raise $1130. The IABS board and members are incredibly appreciative of everyone who supported our fundraiser through not just donating but, spreading the word and supporting the student division We broadcasted all of our leaders receiving their pies to the phase through the national Federation of the blind of Illinois Facebook page.
