[NABS-L] Blind and low-vision high school students who are English learners in Spanish-speaking families needed for research study

The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.



Invitation to Participate in a Research Study

We are seeking high school students that are blind or low vision and English Learners from Spanish speaking households to participate in this research study

Study Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to gather information about the experiences of high school students that are blind or low vision and English Learners. We seek to learn from their first hand experiences. We are looking for high school students in the Unites States that are blind or low vision and English Learners to take part in research looking at their experiences. They will share about their experiences via focus groups where they will share their experiences with prompting questions.

Who can Participate:
We ask that your home language be Spanish and that you be willing to participate in a focus group of an hour to two hours. Your participation is completely voluntary, and you may withdrawal at any time.

To take part in this study, participants must:

  *   Be current high school students
  *   Have at any time in their education received IEP services for blindness or low vision, or had a 504 plan
  *   Have at some point in their education been identified as an English Learner
  *   Their home language must be Spanish

What will participation include:
Participation in this study consists of a one-to-two-hour focus group. The focus group will be conducted via Zoom. Students will have the option of participating in an English or Spanish focus group, whichever they feel most comfortable in. The Consent form will provide you with detailed information on what to expect if you do choose to participate.

Consent and confidentiality:
Participation in this study is completely voluntary. The parent/guardian will complete a consent form and the participant will complete an assent form. There are no direct benefits to participate in this study. All information gathered during all steps of the study will remain confidential and no student identifiable information will be shared. By sharing your knowledge, you will contribute to knowledge in the field of blindness and English Learners.

Potential harm of participation:
While there is no harm from this study, there exists of the possibility that participants will share information that cause them distress. Participants can decline to take part in the study at any time.

Estamos buscando estudiantes de secundaria que son ciegos o con baja visión y estudiantes de inglés de hogares de habla hispana para participar en este estudio de investigación

Propósito del estudio:
El propósito de este estudio es recopilar información sobre las experiencias de los estudiantes de secundaria (high school)que son ciegos o con baja visión y estudiantes de inglés como segundo idiioma. Buscamos aprender de sus experiencias de primera mano. Estamos buscando estudiantes de secundaria en los Estados Unidos que sean ciegos o con baja visión y estudiantes de inglés para participar en investigaciones que analicen sus experiencias. Compartirán sobre sus experiencias a través de grupos focales donde compartirán sus experiencias con preguntas incitantes.

Quién puede participar:
Le pedimos que su lengua materna sea el español y que esté dispuesto a participar en un grupo focal de una hora a dos horas. Su participación es completamente voluntaria, y puede retirarse en cualquier momento.

Para participar en este estudio, los participantes deben:

1.                  Ser estudiantes actuales de secundaria (high school)

2.                  En cualquier momento de su educación, ha recibido servicios del IEP para ceguera o baja visión, o ha tenido un plan 504

3.                  En algún momento de su educación han sido identificados como un estudiante de inglés como segundo idioma

4.                  Su lengua materna debe ser el español

¿Qué incluirá la participación?
La participación en este estudio consiste en un grupo focal de una a dos horas. El grupo focal se llevará a cabo a través de Zoom. Los estudiantes tendrán la opción de participar en un grupo focal en inglés o español, en el que se sientan más cómodos. El formulario de consentimiento le proporcionará información detallada sobre qué esperar si decide participar.

Consentimiento y confidencialidad:
La participación en este estudio es completamente voluntaria. El padre/tutor completará un formulario de consentimiento y el participante completará un formulario de asentimiento. No hay beneficios directos para participar en este estudio. Toda la información recopilada durante todos los pasos del estudio permanecerá confidencial y no se compartirá información identificable del estudiante.
