After an intimidating first day at North Shore High School, Cady befriends outsiders Janis Ian and Damian Leigh, who explain the school's various cliques and warn her to avoid the "Plastics", a group consisting of wealthy but insecure Gretchen Wieners, sweet but dimwitted Karen Smith, and "queen bee" Regina George. When Cady is invited to sit with the Plastics at lunch, Janis persuades her to infiltrate the ruling clique. Cady becomes attracted to Aaron Samuels, a senior in her calculus class and Regina's ex-boyfriend, and learns about the "Burn Book", a scrapbook the Plastics fill with cruel rumors about students and faculty. Regina offers to talk to Aaron on Cady's behalf, but instead kisses him in front of her and resumes their relationship. Feeling betrayed, Cady fully commits to Janis' plan to damage Regina's reputation. Regina tells Cady that she and Janis were once friends until she accused Janis of being a lesbian and ostracized her. After their attempts to sabotage Regina's wardrobe backfire, Cady, Janis, and Damian plan to turn Gretchen against her. They make it seem as though Regina has sent "candy cane-grams" to Cady and Karen while excluding Gretchen. Regina further humiliates Gretchen during their dance performance at the Winter Talent Show, leading Gretchen to tell Cady all of Regina's embarrassing secrets. Cady informs Aaron that Regina is cheating on him, prompting them to break up, and tricks Regina into eating nutrition bars that cause her to gain weight. Following a sharp drop in Regina's reputation, she is replaced by Cady as the new "queen bee". Cady throws a house party while her parents are away, and drunkenly admits to Aaron that she has been deliberately failing math class to make him help her, but he rebukes her for becoming as manipulative and image-obsessed as Regina. Janis and Damian confront Cady for lying to them about the party and remaking herself in Regina's image. Cady accuses Janis of being in love with her, and Janis declares her a "mean girl" and renounces their friendship. Realizing Cady's betrayal, Regina retaliates by distributing the contents of the Burn Book throughout school, inciting chaos among the girls of the junior class. She avoids suspicion by inserting insults about herself, and blame is placed on Cady, Gretchen, and Karen. To restore order, Principal Duvall and math teacher Ms. Norbury gather the female junior students in the gym to apologize to each other. Regina insults Janis' sexuality, prompting Janis to reveal her entire plan to destroy Regina's reputation as the students cheer. Regina storms out, pursued by an apologetic Cady, and is struck by a school bus, fracturing her spine. When Ms. Norbury is investigated as a drug dealer due to comments Cady wrote in the burn book, Cady takes full blame for the book. She is shunned by her peers and distrusted by her own parents, but gradually returns to her old self. She joins the school Mathletes at the state finals, answering the tiebreaker correctly and winning the championship. The team arrives at the Spring Fling dance, where Cady is elected queen, but declares that all her classmates are wonderful in their own way, snapping the plastic tiara and distributing the pieces to other girls in the crowd, including Janis, Gretchen, and Regina. She rekindles her friendship with Janis and Damian, makes up with Aaron, and reaches a truce with the Plastics. The Plastics disband at the beginning of the new school year; Regina joins the lacrosse team to positively manage her anger. Karen becomes the school weather reporter, and Gretchen joins the "Cool Asians" clique. Aaron graduates and attends Northwestern University while starting a relationship with Cady. Reflecting on the relative social peace that has taken over North Shore High, Cady notices a trio of new "Junior Plastics" in Freshman year, and imagines them being hit by a bus. Laura de Carteret as Taylor Wedell's Mom What's Love Got to Do with It Rating: R Run Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes Raised in Nutbush, Tennessee in the early 1950s, Anna Mae Bullock returns from being sent home from her Baptist church for oversinging when she sees her mother Zelma leaving her home, this time for good. Returning back to her house, she is distraught over her mother leaving and is consoled by her grandmother Georgeanna. Six years later, a teenage Anna Mae relocates to St. Louis, where she reunites with her elder sister Alline and her mother. While in St. Louis, Anna is taken by Alline to a nightclub at East St. Louis where, after viewing a performance by charismatic bandleader named Ike Turner and his band the Kings of Rhythm, she pursues a position to sing with Turner after noting women coming onstage to sing with the musician. One night, Anna finally gets her chance to perform for Ike and impresses the bandleader so much that he offers to mentor her and produce her music. In time, Ike and Anna develop a close friendship. As the first front woman of the Kings of Rhythm, along with the formation of a backing girl group, later known as the Ikettes, Anna develops a local popularity at the St. Louis club scene. However, after Ike's girlfriend, Lorraine Taylor, shoots herself after confronting Anna on rumors she and Ike had slept together, she and Ike begin an unexpected romance. After recording the hit, "A Fool in Love", Anna becomes pregnant with their son Ronnie and Anna learns, while in the hospital, that her name has changed to Tina Turner after the radio station announces the name "Ike & Tina Turner" following the playing of "A Fool in Love". Though told she was anaemic and in need of three weeks rest in hospital following her pregnancy, Ike takes Tina out of the hospital and convinces her to marry him in Tijuana. Problems begin developing between Ike and Tina almost immediately after "A Fool in Love" when Tina complains of being overworked, angering Ike to the point he verbally abuses her before a show at the Apollo Theater. Despite this, when Tina takes the stage that night to perform the song, the Ike & Tina Turner Revue becomes a national sensation and relocates to Los Angeles. Upon learning that Ike & Tina have moved to Los Angeles, Lorraine Taylor makes an unexpected visit to their new home and drops off Ike's previous children, Ike Jr. and Michael, with Tina's other sons Craig and Ronnie, which further complicates matters at home. One day while at home, Tina voices her opinion that Ike's music "all sounds the same", which leads to Ike beating her in front of their four sons. Following a performance on a teen rock and roll show in 1966, Tina is offered a solo deal with Phil Spector for the song, "River Deep - Mountain High", which upsets Ike, though he takes the $25,000 Spector offers to keep out of the studio. Following the song's successful launch, Ike & Tina celebrates by having lunch at a diner, but this ends when Tina gets into a fight with Ike over him offering her a piece of pound cake, leading to a public fight, which leads to one of the Ikettes, a close friend of Tina's, leaving after Ike slaps her. Fed up with Ike's abuse one morning, Tina calls her mother Zelma telling her she was leaving Ike and heading back to St. Louis. But while on their way back, Ike learns of their whereabouts and drags Tina back to California. While opening for the Rolling Stones in London, Ike & Tina find success with their recording of "Proud Mary", which transforms the Revue from a national R&B phenomenon to an international sensation. Overtime, crowds begin clamoring more to Tina than Ike, which causes further tension as Ike discovers cocaine. During one recording session of the song, "Nutbush City Limits" in 1973, an addicted Ike verbally attacks Tina for not singing the song properly, blaming her for the duo's issues in following their previous hits. After hitting Tina repeatedly, he initiates raping Tina. Finding no chance of escape, one night, Tina overdoses a full bottle of sleeping pills before a show and is rushed to a hospital where she recovers. Tina eventually visits a friend, a former Ikette, who convinces her to practice Buddhism and the chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, telling her that the chanting would "change her life". Though skeptical, Tina attempts it and soon begins feverishly chanting, to the shock of onlookers, including Ike, who is distracted by the new Tina. Then, in 1976, while en route to a show in Dallas, a fed-up Tina begins to annoy Ike. While in the limousine on their way to the hotel, Ike and Tina engage in a physical fight which leaves them both bloodied and battered. Upon their entry, Ike falls asleep and Tina makes her escape with only her purse. Afraid of being found out, Tina runs to the back of the hotel and faces oncoming traffic before arriving at a Ramada Inn where she pleads to the hotel manager that she needs a room despite only having 36 cents on her person, the manager agrees and gives Tina the room. Tina later files for divorce and in the final matter, Tina agrees to give up everything except her stage name, which is granted. In 1980, Tina begins rebuilding her career at the cabaret circuit and invites a young impresario named Roger Davies to see her perform so he could manage her and help her realize her dreams as a rock star. Impressed that she still could perform, Davies agrees to manage her. Still, the presence of Ike threatens to derail her chances. After one rehearsal, Ike spots her and tries to convince her to return back to him. When she refuses, Ike gets belligerent and Tina leaves before Ike becomes violent. One night, around 1983, while watching an interview of herself on TV, a battered Ike Jr. comes to her house, warning her that Ike has plans of killing her. Turning to her Buddhist faith, she prepares for a show at the Ritz Theatre where Ike confronts her at her dressing room with a gun. Undeterred, Tina verbally silences him and leaves the dressing room where she dazzles the audience at the Ritz with her new hit single, "What's Love Got to Do with It" where she eventually realizes her dream of being a rock superstar. I think the accessibility is decent, although I am still trying to figure it out. What I have been helpful is to be logged in on both my Windows computer and my iPhone (you can have more than one device logged in at the same time). That way, if one aspect of the site is not accessible on one device, you can use the other to get what you want done, and then you can either go back to the first device or continue with the second one. It only starts out (and ends with) ways to contact. There's no description of this internship or anything. Could you be more specific in detailing this opportunity, maybe by providing a brief description of what interns do there and things of that nature? That is, if I'm right about only the ending being included in your previous message. It's highly unlikely people will apply for things like this if they don't have any details on what the internship involves, what people working there would do, who would be qualified, etc. I sincerely hope you understand where I'm going with this. It's perfectly OK with me if you just made a mistake by inadvertently pasting the last part of the job posting in your previous email; after all, we're all only human, and each one of us makes mistakes. I'm just pointing out here that your email appears to be missing quite a bit of information. I hope you have an enjoyable Easter/Passover weekend! My name is Seyoon Choi, and I’ve been honored to serve as the president of the Missouri Association of Blind Students, a division of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri. The purpose of this organization is to promote the integration of blind students as equal participants in schools, to encourage students who are blind to seek the necessary resources to achieve their professional goals in order to compete on an equal basis with sighted peers, to serve as the vehicle for collective action for blind students for security, equality and opportunity in academia. Our blind student leaders were hard at work to bring this student led seminar into action, taking place along side the 61st convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri’s convention at the Hilton St. Louis Airport, located at 10330 Natural Bridge Rd. St. Louis, MO. I’ve failed to mention the date and time of our programming, that’s on Friday, April 14 at 5 Pm. Doors open at 4:45 PM. The student led seminar, themed Finding Your Path Forward, is the perfect opportunities for blind students and their families to learn, network, and mentor from one another. Whether you’re a high school senior getting ready to take that giant step forward into higher education, a longtime cane user who may be thinking of taking a new path forward with a guide dog, or are looking to find your way forward with a more independent lifestyle through one of the National Federation of the Blind ’s fantastic training centers, our seminar will have something for everyone! Join us as we hear from many fantastic panelists and presenters about how we as blind people can find our own way forward to live the lives we want. Interested in joining us? There is no cost to you, but we do ask that you register in advance or at the door, so we could plan accordingly. Meal will be provided. You can register here Know of a blind student who could benefit from our programming? Please spread the word, and encourage them to join us. Message-ID: Hello all, For those of you who are on this listserv and know me, so nice to connect with you. For those of you who don't, I'm Dr. Ashley Nashleanas, assessment development staff with the University of Kansas and principal investigator for the Phase I Independence Science Sci-Dot grant as part of the NSF/SBIR program. I'm reaching out with the hope of receiving information and recommendations on visual collaboration programs such as WhiteBoard and Miro, among others. As a current employee of the University of Kansas's Accessibility of Teaching, Learning and Assessment Systems (ATLAS), I find a lot of blessing, and of course some stressing, as a result of being exposed to a myriad of technologies at a time. I find it more than anything to be a great learning experience. That said, the company uses visual collaboration tools for the purposes of internal project planning, among other things. A project I proposed that got accepted, started a few months ago, and we have been using Whiteboard for planning and tracking purposes. Based on what I've been able to explore of the platform and several online searches, Whiteboard feels like it would be an accessible tool for screen readers, except that it crashes within a matter of minutes each time I've attempted to use it, regardless of which browser I use it with. I've communicated with the appropriate IT personnel at KU, who have indicated to further explore the issue, but that's all I know so far. I also have looked into Miro as an alternative planning tool. Although Miro doesn't crash as WhiteBoard did, there are many aspects of the program I have found inaccessible, even when trying to join from the Microsoft Teams desktop app (where it is said to be the most screen-reader accessible version) and enabling screen reading mode. Mike Hingson, a good friend and colleague of mine, mentioned the NFB did some work around visual collaboration programs. I also spoke with Dave Andrews, who directed me to this listserv to find out more. Would someone on this listserv be amenable to letting me know what is known about the accessibility of either WhiteBoard or Miro with Jaws for Windows screen reading technology? Thank you for your insight! I'm currently taking a geology class called Rivers, Glaciers and Deserts. I'm in my third week and I'm working with a teacher who is decent, but she also doesn't have a clew on how she can do her best to make her work easily translatable into an accessible form. I'll give her credit for learning fast, but her workload is also too large for my school's small but decent disabilities department to be capable of keeping up with the size of it. The size of the matereals is too large for my school's disabilities department to keep up with in the time limits of the course which are nearly set in stone. There is only one accessible media person who has an overload of course matereals that they're not able to keep up with due to these time limits. We have tried to prevent this problem by me signing up for a geology class that was going to be taught by my all time favorite teacher, but at the last minute, my college's automatic system dumped my all time favorite science teacher because that teacher was part time, and one too many classes were also automatically canceled along with her because of low student enrollment. Unfortunently, nothing could be done to prevent this ground shaking hurtle. As the result, everyone got landed with the teacher I currently have who hasn't learned enough to even assist my school's department, even though she's learning and helping out where she's able to so far. I suspect that there will be larger challenges ahead. I'm working with JAWS 2022, NVDA, on a Windows 10 laptop computer and am working with Office Word 2021. I also use a Focus 14 braille display. Part of the matereals will involve both topographical maps and Google Earth; which I should start seeing in my lab for next week. I heard that Google Earth is accessible, but I have not yet experienced it nor seen anything regarding it being accessible. How clunky is an accessible version of Google Earth? Can I navigate it in nearly the same speed as my sighted classmates? If I have to use it in a lab that moves faster than I'm able to keep up with, I need to know how worth my while it will be to attempt at learning how to use it, let alone exploring it, or simply making my in class sighted assistant dictate everything, if not read everything. My school does not have a tactile blackboard, which I wish it did, but because of that, it would mean that someone who is sighted might have to describe every single immage that appears on the computer screen. The problem with that is that the sighted person doesn't know the topic well enough to consistently give me a good enough description where I can get the right info out of their descriptions that I need to get in order to do as well as possible during the entire course. Also, I don't know of any topographical map that is accessible. How can I even begin to navigate around that obstacle? Do I have to pull the old school work completely on a sighted person's descriptions? In geology, the work requires all students to know the colors, designs and features of the rocks, landmarks, or features that are being studied. A simple rock isn't enough of a description in geology class, where it would be enough of one in a language learning class. In any case, as I understand it, on these maps and Google, I'm expected to study land features that are too large to touch and fully see what the shape would look like. They're too far away to visit even if they were small enough to feel the entire thing. As though that's not enough, one is expected to I.D. the kind of rock it's made out of judging by its color and visual designs. Unfortunently, I have not managed to find a way for that info to be fully translatable in any accessible sence, other than the written word paired with some physical 3D models. My school does not have a 3D printer, and it probably won't be able to afford one any time soon. I also don't know if my current teacher can build models either since she's a mom of 2 children who are 5 and younger, and is practicaly working as a single mom since her biologist husband isn't around during the week to assist her when her kids are not in day care or school. Therefore, I have some set in stone limits to work around through all of this mess. Does anyone have good tips on how to get the right info out of a visual description? What are the right questions for someone who is sighted but doesn't know geology very well? Also, if they are somewhat less talented at describing in general, what are the right questions to guide them in the right direction? Going back to the maps, if they are accessible, how does one get ahold of an accessible topographical map? If they are as inaccessible as I suspect, what else do I do to get around it? I'm looking for some good workarounds here, giving these physical limits that I mentioned above. Any help would be awesome! I am a guide dog user and have heard that guide dog users are legally entitled to get single rooms at college, but they are also significatly more expensive. At NEC, the price difference is about $5,000. My state VR agency covers 75% of room and board, but I'm not sure that they would cover 75% of the extra cost. I'm wondering if guide dog users have opinions about how valuable it is to have a single room and how to navigate the cost difference. Any and all advice is much appreciated! Also, why does VR only cover 75% of your board? Why not 100%? And if the new room costs $5,000 more, shouldn't the total price that VR covers be adjusted to reflect the new cost? Furthermore, why don't they cover the full cost? Considering your guide dog, I would say that having a single room might be a good idea to ensure both of you have enough privacy and personal space. I love spending time with people and I was very social in college, but I definitely appreciated having a quiet place where I could feed my dog peacefully, or even leave him alone if I wanted to go out by myself knowing that nobody else was going to come in. I’m certainly not saying it’s impossible to live with a roommate and it may even turn out to be a great experience, but at least for Freshman year I would try and get a single room if possible. Just my thoughts! I'm currently taking a geology class at my local community college for my degree. My Geology class requires all students to use Google Earth Pro for half of the labs, starting on Thursday of this week. I have heard all over the place that Google Earth is accessible, but so far, I have not been able to actually see its accessible capabilities in action. I have not heard much feed back and it seems that no one I know knows a thing about Google Earth's accessible features either. I have not also been able to find a good short cut list, video or tutorial that's remotely helpful for independent blind users who are not working near sighted people during this hunt to learn about it. The lists I have found seem to be either out of date or they contain directions for mouse users. I have also watched a YouTube video that also only contained mouse directions. That video promised keyboard short cuts but they also didn't follow through with that promise. I'm a keyboard user, not a mouse user. I'm using JAWS 2022, Office 2021, and my go to browser is Firefox. As of this email, Google Earth Pro is open in front of me and so far, I can only get JAWS to say "button", "check box unchecked", "check box checked", "Edit" and maybe a few things like "pictures", but I have not managed to get anywhere else beyond this point. My questions: Does anyone know how to use Google Earth? Is it true that Google Earth is fully accessible to blind users? Where is a helpful tutorial and cheat sheet for visual but blind users who are not near sighted people? Where is there a resource that gives out directions that are like the game "Simon Says" for those who are blind but know nothing about Google Earth, but who also needs to learn it? Does any resource exist that has these things I mentioned in my last two questions but is also up to date? If there is nothing out there that's helpful and up to date, who can I get the best help from? Where can I get the best help for my needs? I'm stuck and can't move forward without a helping hand. I greatly appreciate any help you all may have for me! I think you can try to request a room by yourself as an accommodation. I did not have a single room. My room was the typical size; I just didn't have a roommate. They just gave me the room as an accommodation if I remember correctly. One other thing I've heard of schools doing is to bend their rules about freshmen living in on campus apartments for students with service animals. That way you would have more space, but you would still have the roommate experience.
