I needed to track some food for my summer class and an alternative that I brought up was My fitness Pal. I knew the paid subscription would allow me to get the information that was required for the course. In my experience in the past with the app was that it had lots of accessibility bugs so I did not think that the paid subscription would make a difference with accessibility. My college did some research and found out that the paid subscription was more accessible. This was found out by them noticing that the American Federation of the Blind reviewed it and said it was accessible. I am looking for information of anyone who may use the My Fitness Pal paid subscription and if they notice that it is accessible. I am also looking to get information about the AFB because I have never heard of them. This is not the first time my college has brought them up. So I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them and how good of an organization they are. Thanks. I have spoken to the Dean of the accessibility department today and she has told me that they may have signed a contract with a visually describing service but she can not remember the name of it. I highly suggested Aira for my college to get. This would make it so much easier for me to get sighted help with out having to go through accessibility to make an appointment so they can find someone to be my describer. I will see how the dean considers it. This dean has only been at my college for about a year so she is pretty new to my campus and how it needs lots of improvements in accessibility. -- Yours truely, Asia Quinones-Evans Phone: 440-670-6509 Email: aevans.nfb at gmail.com Live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back From braillemasterjustin at gmail.com Tue Aug 1 15:10:29 2023 From: braillemasterjustin at gmail.com (Justin Heard) Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2023 11:10:29 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Information Needed In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <3a490c15-02fb-3eaf-72fa-76f0b2483774@gmail.com> Good morning Asia. I am pretty sure you mean the American Foundation for the Blind. The NFB has had a troubled relationship with this organization throughout its existence. Right now, the situation seems to be improving, but time will tell. However, they often provide solid research and information. As with everything, read critically, look at multiple sources when available, and reach out to experienced people in your network to discuss what you've learned. Hopefully, someone else will be able to share their experience with My Fitness Pal. Regarding your interest in MyFitnessPal, I recall reading something about it in their publication called Access Journal some time ago. Another organization you might want to check out is the American Council of the Blind (ACB). They are known for advocating for exercise-related topics and could have valuable information about MyFitnessPal as well. I hope this helps! Let me know if you need any more information. Take care! The friends enter a competition for free tickets to the Super Bowl in Houston by sharing the stories of their Patriots fandom; Lou later announces their win and they prepare for their trip. On the day of their flight, the others break Maura out of her retirement home with help from her fellow resident, Mickey. In Houston, they go to the NFL Experience, where Betty wins a chicken wing eating contest hosted by Guy Fieri, but loses the tickets. Trish meets former NFL player Dan O'Callahan and mutual attraction forms between them, but Trish is uncertain as she has not had a very successful love life; Dan invites her to a party, and the women decide to go upon learning about the loss of the tickets as Fieri will also be there. At the party, the women are given cannabis edibles which severely disorient them. Maura joins in on a game of poker in order to potentially buy new tickets, only to learn that the game is for charity; she gives her winnings to the charity of her top competitor, Gugu. Unable to find Fieri, the foursome return to their hotel. The next day, the women go back to the NFL Experience but find it has closed down. They then go to the tailgate parties around NRG Stadium to see if they can buy any tickets from scalpers, but cannot afford them. Trish finds the radio hosts they won the tickets from and brings up the situation to them, but they are confused as they gave their tickets to a different group. Betty finds Fieri at the tailgate and recovers the bag with the tickets but when the women attempt to enter the stadium, the security guards reveal that the tickets are fake. Lou confesses that she bought the "tickets" online for an exorbitant price, as she wanted to have one last fun memory with her friends as she fears that her cancer may have returned. The other women console her and agree that even if they could not make it into the game, they are satisfied with all of their other memories. They run into Gugu, who sneaks them in under the guise of being backup dancers for Lady Gaga's halftime performance out of gratitude for Maura's actions the previous night. They run into Dan who invites them into his box suite as his guests. Concerned as they watch the Atlanta Falcons build a 28-3 lead over the Patriots, they decide to sneak into the Patriots coordinators' booth. Betty hijacks the defensive coordinator's headset and gives him a playcall which leads to a sack, while Lou talks to Brady and gives him an inspirational message. The quartet return to their box suite and watch as Brady leads the Patriots to a victory. Maura reveals she made back the money Lou spent on the fake tickets by making a bet on the Patriots winning with the owner of the suite. The women are approached by security, and escorted to the Patriots' locker room, and thanked by the players for their dedication. Three years later, Trish, Maura, Betty, and Lou, along with Mickey, and Lou's daughter Sara, prepare to watch Brady's first game with his new team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it is revealed that Lou is in good health.[a] Sometime later, the four women sit on a beach with Brady discussing their retirements.[b] Cast Lily Tomlin as Lou Jane Fonda as Trish Rita Moreno as Maura Sally Field as Betty Tom Brady as himself Billy Porter as Gugu Harry Hamlin as Dan Guy Fieri as himself[4] Alex Moffat as Nat Rob Corddry as Pat Glynn Turman as Mickey Ron Funches as Chip Bob Balaban as Mark Jimmy O. Three minutes into the flight, at an approximate altitude of 2,800 ft (850 m), the Airbus A320 strikes a flock of birds, damaging both engines. Without much time to think, they judge themselves as unable to reach nearby airports (Teterboro Airport being the closest), and Sully ditches the aircraft on the Hudson River. Though with mild injuries, the crew and passengers evacuate without any fatalities. Sully is hailed a hero, but still experiences the aftereffects, and finds himself unable to escape the attention of the press, which is not only targeting him but also his family. Still in New York City for investigation reasons, Sully learns that preliminary data from ACARS suggest that the left engine was still running at idle power. Theoretically, it still had enough power to land the plane at either LaGuardia or Teterboro. Furthermore, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) claims that several confidential computerized simulations show similar results. Sully and Jeff firmly insist otherwise, and this opposition gradually intensifies the relationship between both parties. The NTSB suspects it may be a case of pilot error, which would likely end Sully's career. He arranges to have the simulations rerun with live pilots, then relayed to the public. They result in successful landings. Sully debates that the simulations are unrealistic because they do not take human factors into account, such as the element of surprise, the time required for analysis and decision-making, and the significantly higher stakes he and Jeff faced; the simulation pilots knew in advance of the situation that they would face and of the suggested emergency action, were able to practice the scenario several times, had no passengers to think about, and were in no danger themselves. The NTSB accepts his criticism, and the simulations are rerun with a 35-second pause before the plane is diverted. The LaGuardia rerun ends with the plane landing short of the runway, and that to Teterboro with a crash into buildings before the airport. The NTSB announces that analysis of the port engine, now recovered from the river, confirms Sully's account that it had indeed been seriously damaged by the bird strike, and concludes that Sully had acted correctly in the event. Sully credits everyone on board, the air traffic controllers, the ferry crews, and the emergency response teams for the success. After an exciting national convention and some much needed post-convention rest, NABS is ready to get right back in action with our committees. The bulk of the incredible work NABS does with and for blind students across the country takes place in our committees. Pick your favorite one or join them all! Good thing you don't have to ! Join the advocacy committee and help blind students all over the country learn how to best stand up for their needs. Help us plan programs and content and pick up some great tricks for yourself as well. This year, we are taking a break from legislative work and instead diving deep into self-advocacy and public speaking. Potential projects include planning self-advocacy workshops, developing resources for non-visual public speaking using visual aids, and more. As president, I have met with Jen regularly and I have enjoyed working with her. In her public statement, inserted below, she wants to take some time for rest and reflection. Most of the time she was in this position, Jen and her team innovated new approaches to deal with the effects of a serious pandemic, as well as the unrest after the murder of George Floyd, and provided quality virtual instruction to their students. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jen for her efforts. Please know that BLIND Incorporated remains open and classes continue. Chelsey Duranleau, assistant director, is currently serving as the acting director. If you are available to provide substitute instruction, lead a seminar discussion, or would like to volunteer your time helping out around the building, Please email Ryan Strunk, Board Chair, at boardchair at blindinc.org. Here is the public statement Jen released today: It has been an honor to serve as the Executive Director of Blindness: Learning In New Dimensions for the last four years. I am grateful to have had the support of so many dedicated staff, students, and leaders within the organization during what had and continues to be an unprecedented time in our communities’ history. Our work is much like a sport. While I may be the coach, it takes heart and energy from all the players to score points towards independence and win the game of empowerment. I am humbled by the number of seasoned teammates who have provided me guidance, and the even larger number of all-star players who allowed me to coach them. Win or lose, we came back out and played every game like it was the championship. Thank you for your dedication to the sport of blindness rehabilitation. Because the shot clock never stops, The time has come for the next coach to bring their heart and energy to the players at BLIND, Inc. I intend to take some time to rest and reflect on all we have accomplished together in the last four seasons. When you see me next, I’ll be proudly wearing a t-shirt worn by fans and members of our community, supporting the team I helped build. Thank you for this incredible opportunity. Jennifer M. URL: From sami.j.osborne97 at gmail.com Wed Aug 9 14:48:55 2023 From: sami.j.osborne97 at gmail.com (Sami Osborne) Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2023 10:48:55 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Questions Regarding Orientation and Mobility Certifications Message-ID: <64d3a75d.050a0220.dbde5.196d@mx.google.com> Hi Jackson, I'm not certified in O and M instruction myself, so I can't really say anything to your specific certification questions. That being said, I think I might have an idea for why it might be more difficult for blind people to obtain certification than the sighted population. I think it's possible that the main reason for this is the general perception people have that it might be harder for blind indiriduals to teach orientation and mobility skills than sighted teachers. Yes, blind people can perhaps teach students proper cane technique, and might have to teach hand-over-hand if necessary to make sure they are using their cane properly. However, part of O and M instruction is also learning a new route to get from point A to point B, which people probably might assume is "easier" to accomplish for a sighted instructor to teach their blind student. Perhaps this is because sighted people are able to use their vision to see what's coming ahead on the route they're going (i.e. street signs, potential obstacles, stores, etc.), even if they may have already mapped out the route in advance. As a result, the observations that a sighted O and M instructor would report to their blind student would seemingly be more precise and definitive, and the student could then retain this information should they need to for future reference. On the other hand, while blind people can certainly utilize their cane/travel skills to master a potential route, the observations I mentioned earlier might be more speculative for us at times, meaning we can assume that the obstacle we encounter is probably such and such an object based on past experience, but it could actually be something else entirely. Additionally, if the blind mobility instructor can't map out an entire route and have to constantly ask for sighted assistance... well, the consequences to their job would probably not bear thinking of. More importantly, however, this lack of definitive, precise knowledge might be confusing to the student; this is something I can attest to myself from personal experience. Having been trained pretty much purely by sighted mobility instructors my whole life, I know personally that I'm much more likely to have a route completely mastered pretty much to perfection when I have all the necessary information conveyed to me in a precise, accurate manner, rather than more ambiguously. As a result, it seems to me that the main reason it's seemingly more difficult to obtain O and M certification as a blind student is based on able-bodied perceptions, namely that blind people might be more likely to expose their students to dangerous and harmful situations than sighted instructors, and that the information regarding specific routes may come across as more ambiguous than definitive. That being said, I'm pretty sure there must be workarounds blind instructors can use to get their way around that, although I'm not really sure what these ways are myself. I'm also not against blind people teaching travel instruction at all, because I'm all for combatting sighted misconceptions just like anyone else. In addition, I think having blind O and M instructors could potentially be advantageous to blind students at times. For example, some sighted instructors are reluctant to teach students how to use public transportation independently, particularly the subway, because they think it's too dangous and risky for someone who is blind to use on their own. Consequently, a blind instructor might feel more empathetic to the student's desire to learn to take public transport on their own, and feel more inclined to teach that as such. There are also a couple of things that we blind individuals might notice right off, that sighted people wouldn't really pay attention to or even consider. For example, I recently just taught myself how to get on and off of airplanes on my own, without the need for anyone to personally assist me up/down the jetway. One thing I've noticed is that on the smaller planes (not so much the case on larger-type aircrafts) is that it's actually pretty easy as a blind cane traveler to locate the exit of the plane from your seat, because the seating area is pretty much all carpeted floor. On the other hand, the entrance/exit to the plane is tiled, and you can turn to the left to exit pretty much as soon as the floor changes from carpet to tiles. This is an observation that I reported to my sighted mother afterwords, and she told me she never realized that before. I hope this info is helpful, and I hope you continue to advocate for yourself to achieve your goal of obtaining O and M certification instruction. I'd really love to read what others have to say about this. Again, my apologies for not being able to help you with your specific certification questions, but I do hope you found what I shared to be helpful. Sami On Aug 9, 2023 9:11 AM, "Jackson T. These questions pertain to the Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) and the National Orientation and Mobility Certification )NOMC). As an individual pursuing a master's degree next year in Orientation and Mobility, I wonder why there is such a vast division between these two certifications. I am aware that in the past, sighted individuals did not think that a blind person could teach Orientation and Mobility; therefore, the NOMC was to combat this. So, I do not need a history lesson on this. > >   > > I wonder why there is still a division between these two certifications and why it is still difficult for a blind person to obtain their COMS, but a sighted person can get both their COMS and their NOMC. Does anyone have any insight into this and knows of any blind people who have received their COMS or are dual-certified in both their COMS and their NOMC? I am just wondering why there is a separation of these certifications. Why must a blind person obtain a different accreditation than a sighted person? Anyone with any insight into this would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, and I am looking forward to some responses. > >   > > Kind Regards, > >   > > Jackson Schwoebel > >   > >   > > Jackson T. Hey NAGDU – I’m writing to ask again for folks to complete our [ACAA survey](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeaP43Jv5nEEfuu-FfF5EooPxyUerQmreg9ciJlxrut8fB0uQ/viewform?pli=1). So far we have only gotten about 20 surveys, and I know there are more of you out there. We need at least 50, and preferably 100 surveys if we want our voices to be heard, so please take a few minutes and complete the survey now. We have received some feedback about the survey not clearly asking for information about your being discouraged from traveling because of the new forms/rules and/or considering not getting a guide dog because of those forms/rules. If you have been discouraged from travling or are thinking about not getting a guide dog in the future because of concerns about being able to fly with a guide dog, please say so in your own words in the optional comment field at the end of the survey. Thank you very much. I will also be using the display with my Windows laptop (I use both JAWS and NVDA) and Android smartphone. I have also been a music student who has studied piano performance and music composition. The mantis has been great, and I think the thing that makes it really unique is its full QWERTY keyboard. However, my problem with it is that it barely gets updates, and I think support for it is waning. However, I still think it’s great because of its capabilities in opening various file types, and it works wonderfully with both JAWS and NVDA. If it weren’t’t for the support issue, I’d highly recommend it. However, I’m worried that support for this device would be completely dropped in a year or two at most. (I think it was released in 2020.) Hope that helps. If you wouldn't mind, please tell me more about why you prefer the BI 40X. Is there a function provided by the BI 40X that you feel I would be missing out on if I went for the Mantis? Any input is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Noah -- Noah Carver Candidate, B.M. However, I'd say that it is a matter of personal preference. I do know that the BI40X does have text to speech capability and could read materials to you like those from bookshare if you needed it. The Mantice can't do that. I have no idea if TTS is important to you, but I wanted to let you know, just in case. I'm thinking of trying to sell my BI40X as I'm not really using it all that much. It is just sitting in a drawer of my dresser. It’s a great way to support our movement while having a blast and getting your competitive juices flowing. Our fantasy football leagues consist of 12 player leagues, with each team competing head-to-head. The top four teams in each league advance to the 2 weeklong playoffs, where one team emerges to gloriously take home the $100 prize. Don’t worry if you are a complete newbie to fantasy football. We will be holding an informational call on Wednesday, August 27th, to answer any and all questions you may have! If you are interested in participating this year, contact one of our four superb league commissioners to sign up. E-Learning is technically accessible, but highly confusing and difficult to use. WMU is in the process of hiring an accessibility assistant to help students with learning, but the curve is steep especially if you are just new. AIRA is supposed to be n access location but not sure how that will work with online-only students. If you have specific questions, I can try to answer, but you should reach out to Gwen Bostik in the IT department for assistance and getting you connected with the new student (Jonathon) that they are hiring, who i worked with over the summer. Unfortunately he’s not a native JAWS user, he is low vision, but I was working with him to familiarize him with JAWS and e-Learning earlier this summer, with the plan for him to be working with students starting now. I am in the process of sorting out accommodations for both of these courses before the classes start. There are several things I would like some feedback on from other Exercise Science majors. One item is of making a device called a granometer accessible. There have been several options thrown out to me and I have chosen the one that I think will suit me better. I will also need to evauate EKGs. The option a professor has made for me before was a larger model with puffy paint on it. The team thinks that this will not give me what I need to complete the assignment. The difficulty I am having with classes like this is since my previous aid has moved. The accessibility team is struggling with finding a replacement for these more visually based classes. My previous aid was awesome but I am having more trouble with professors with having one in the classroom and I am not liking this. Does anyone who has taken classes like this or is in this kind of study have any other thoughts on how to tell my accessibility team that having a describer in class with me is actually very distracting to me and others in the class? Without going into a giant story of everything. There is a so-called Jaws expert working on my campus now. She is totally sighted and thinks she knows what a blind person needs to make them more efficient with classes or other things. I do not like this person for one because she has sight. And for two not every blind person is the same and just like sighted people blind people learn in different ways. This is starting to cause issues with how I want my accommodations done because the accessibility team is going to her first not me when needing to ask how something should be made accessible. -- Yours truely, Asia Quinones-Evans Phone: 440-670-6509 Email: aevans.nfb at gmail.com Live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back From spopplestone.nfb at gmail.com Fri Aug 18 14:41:45 2023 From: spopplestone.nfb at gmail.com (Shane Popplestone) Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2023 14:41:45 +0000 Subject: [NABS-L] join the Ohio association of blind students tonight at 8:00 PM eastern, 5:00 PM pacific for a short business meeting then a social meeting! After attempting the orientation assignment, I discovered what might be accessibility issues. I am unable to access the math tools pallett, where you can select fraction and exponent symbols to place in your answers. The instructions say the tools are only available from the answer box. However, once I enter the box, I can't find a way to navigate to the tools at the bottom of the screen. The tab and arrow keys only move me back and forth within the answer box. Also, one of my orientation questions asked me to click into a drop down menu and choose the correct option. By pressing the arrow keys, I was able to hear the available options. But pressing enter on one of them simply tossed me to the heading with the question title. There was no way to get into the drop down or navigate through it. I am using the latest version of JAWS, on a laptop running Windows 11 with Chrome. Have any of you used MyLab before? Is there a way around these access issues? If not, how did you complete your assignments? Thank you, Merlyn From jtschwoebel.nfb at gmail.com Thu Aug 24 14:50:00 2023 From: jtschwoebel.nfb at gmail.com (Jackson T. I tried McGraw-Hill Connect for an Elementary German class that I will be taking this semester. Here is part of the email I sent to the Office of Disability Resources at my school describing the multiple accessibility failures I discovered: "I've given this a cursory look. Unfortunately, the online textbook has the same problems as the Italian textbook, namely that English is labeled as German and German is labeled as English. This is particularly apparent with image descriptions and built-in page controls that are English but read as German. This makes content tagged incorrectly unintelligible. In regards to the workbook, I loaded the first activity, which has the following instructions: 'Alles klar? A One of the things you will learn to do in German is to give information about yourself and other people in different situations and contexts. Look at this young woman’s profile and find the following information about her.' The image required to do this activity is not read at all by my screen reader. I called AIRA to confirm there was an image there, and there was, but there's absolutely nothing there according to JAWS. If this is the state of accessibility for the first activity of Chapter 1, God knows what else is in there, and I don't want to find out the hard way when inaccessible homework needs doing." To clarify, I have found language class accessibility to be particularly abismal. I hope that administrators of your sociology course have taken better care to make material accessible. With that being said, I wouldn't rely on McGraw-Hill Connect to be fully accessible given my experience. If you have a chance, I would suggest requesting access to your course materials early so that you can determine whether or not the course content is indeed accessible. I would also suggest notifying your Accessibility/Disability Office and/or your instructor now that the McGraw-Hill Connect platform might not be accessible and that accommodations may be needed. I hope this helps. I also hope that someone with direct McGraw-Hill Connect sociology course experience can chime in. Sincerely, Noah -- Noah Carver Candidate, B.M. I hope that the McGraw-Hill connect platform is accessible for my kinesiology course. I have had the course opened for me quite a while ago but I do not feel like playing with it because this is my summer vacation. I will definitely test it out Monday morning before I have class on Tuesday. I would imagine that they are fully accessible because they work with the Nfb very closely. They were at a table at the NFB National Convention this year. The textbook format that I have received, though from them are accessible. I have received a PDF and an EPUB format from them. I just have not checked out some of the other requirements for the course. I found the accessibility experience supremely patchy. Some things, like multiple choice and basic navigation--between stages of a lab for instance--were manageable. However: A. pictures/graphs had no accompanying descriptive text. B. and more problematically, drag and drop questions, as well as matching questions, were completely inaccessible. I know there is technically a way to drag and drop with jaws, but even with the latest version and extensive consultation with far savvier assistive technology users than myself, it proved impossible through the McGraw platform. For those questions, I had to utilize a scribe provided by the college. So finding out what sorts of questions your instructor intends to pose is crucially important. If you have specific questions throughout the semester, please don't hesitate to message me at liamskitten at gmail.com and I'll do my best to help. Warmly, Nick From liamskitten at gmail.com Fri Aug 25 21:10:28 2023 From: liamskitten at gmail.com (Nick Stover) Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2023 16:10:28 -0500 Subject: [NABS-L] MyLab Online program In-Reply-To: References: <915421337.2934744.1692855737144.ref@mail.yahoo.com> <915421337.2934744.1692855737144@mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: Merlyn and Isabel, I had to take a class utilizing this last semester. In most cases, Isabel's professor is correct that the lab accessibility is excellent. Graphs are beautifully and thoroughly described with the accessibility mode, and inputting answers is far easier. However, there are a couple of caveats. If you're doing anything with exponents, I actually found it was impossible to get the accessibility mode to recognize Pearson's own keyboard shortcut for them. I had to eventually turn off the mode, abandon jaws entirely, and use the shift plus up arrow and shift plus down arrow--which enters superscript and subscript mode respectively--with NVDA. With NVDA, you can fairly easily arrow to the proper place in the answer boxes to put in those answers even outside the accessibility mode. The much larger problem I had was in utilizing logic symbols in basic truth tables. First off, putting together any large-scale truth table was nigh on impossible with either of my screen readers--they wouldn't properly convey when particular rows and columns had ended, so keeping track of which answers went where took sighted assists. But even in compiling simple statements: there is supposed to be Pearson keyboard shortcuts like \or for a logical or etc. etc. But the program refused to recognize those shortcuts when in accessibility mode, and once I got out of the mode, none of the answer pallet buttons were labeled, so it was almost impossible to insert the correct symbol without sighted help. Other than these two hurtles, I found it fairly accessible, so much of its utility will depend on what topics are being covered. If either of you have specific questions during semester, feel free to message me privately at liamskitten at gmail.com and I'll try to help. :) Warmly, Nick From lrcapp13 at gmail.com Sat Aug 26 15:14:16 2023 From: lrcapp13 at gmail.com (Lizzy Cappelli) Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2023 11:14:16 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] E-reader Recommendations Message-ID: <4F27FDFC-B7A2-4EFC-B8A8-56D488218E9F@gmail.com> Hi NABS, I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for e-readers to read books in large print? They find local legend Bo "Bandit" Darville at a truck rodeo at Lakewood Fairgrounds and offer him $80,000 to haul 400 cases of Coors from Texarkana (the closest place it could be legally sold at that time) to Atlanta in 28 hours. The Bandit takes the bet on the risky and unprecedented task, and recruits his friend Cledus "Snowman" Snow to drive the truck, while Bandit drives a black Pontiac Trans Am as a "blocker" to divert attention away from the truck and its illegal cargo. The pair arrive in Texarkana one hour early and load up the truck, but just as they head back, Carrie, a runaway bride, intercepts Bandit and jumps in his car, unwittingly making him an indirect target of Sheriff Buford T. Justice, a career Texas lawman whose witless son Junior was to have married Carrie. Buford, with Junior along, engages in a high-speed pursuit and doggedly chases Bandit all the way to Georgia to retrieve Carrie and arrest the Bandit, while various comical mishaps cause his cruiser to disintegrate on the way. Bandit attracts more police attention across Dixie as Snowman barrels on toward Atlanta with the contraband beer, but they are helped en route by many colorful characters via CB radio. Neither Buford nor any other lawmen know of Snowman's illegal manifest, while Bandit is likewise unaware that Buford is chasing him because of Carrie, whose jumpiness inspires Bandit to give her the CB handle "Frog". Just after re-entering Georgia, Snowman is rescued by Bandit after being stopped by a Georgia State Patrol motorcycle trooper, as state and local police intensely pursue Bandit with roadblocks and a helicopter to track his movement. With four miles left, Bandit, discouraged by the unexpected mounting attention, is ready to give up, but Snowman, who initially thought they would fail, takes the lead and smashes through the roadblock at the fairgrounds' main entrance. They arrive with ten minutes to spare, but instead of taking the payoff, Carrie and Bandit accept a double-or-nothing offer from Little Enos: a challenge to run up to Boston and bring back clam chowder in 18 hours. They quickly escape in one of Big Enos's 13 Cadillacs as police flood the racetrack. After passing Buford's badly damaged cruiser on the roadside, Bandit gets on the CB and initially directs him to the Burdettes, but then respectfully gives his real location right behind Buford, who continues his chase leaving Junior behind, and with more parts falling off his cruiser as he limps off after Bandit. An unseen force attacks and pulls her underwater. Her remains are found washed up on the beach the next morning. After the medical examiner concludes it was a shark attack, newly hired police chief Martin Brody closes the beaches; Mayor Larry Vaughn persuades him to reconsider, fearing the town's summer economy will suffer. The coroner, apparently under pressure, now concurs with the mayor's theory that it was a boating accident. Brody reluctantly accepts their conclusion until a young boy, Alex Kintner, is killed at a crowded beach. A bounty is placed on the shark, causing an amateur shark-hunting frenzy. Quint, an eccentric and roughened local shark hunter, offers his services for $10,000. Consulting oceanographer Matt Hooper examines the girl's remains, confirming that an abnormally large shark killed her. When local fishermen catch a tiger shark, the mayor declares the beaches safe. Mrs. Kintner confronts Brody and blames him for her son's death. A skeptical Hooper dissects the tiger shark and, finding no human remains inside its stomach, determines a larger shark killed the victims. While searching the night waters in Hooper's boat, Hooper and Brody find the half-sunken vessel of Ben Gardner, a local fisherman. Underwater, Hooper removes a sizable shark tooth from the boat's hull, but accidentally drops it after discovering Gardner's severed head. Vaughn dismisses Brody and Hooper's assertions that a huge great white shark caused the deaths, and refuses to close the beaches, allowing only increased safety precautions. On the Fourth of July weekend, tourists pack the beaches. The shark enters a nearby lagoon, killing a boater. Brody then convinces a guilt-ridden Vaughn to hire Quint. Despite tension between Quint and Hooper, they set out with Brody on Quint's boat to hunt the shark. As Brody lays down a chum line, the shark suddenly appears behind the boat. Quint, estimating it is 25 feet (7.6 m) long and weighs 3 tonnes (3.0 long tons; 3.3 short tons), harpoons it with a line attached to a flotation barrel, but the shark pulls the barrel underwater and disappears. At nightfall, Quint and Hooper drunkenly exchange stories about their assorted body scars. One of Quint's is a removed tattoo, and he reveals that he survived the attack on the USS Indianapolis. The shark returns, ramming the boat's hull and disabling the power. The men work through the night, repairing the engine. In the morning, Brody attempts to call the Coast Guard, but Quint, obsessed with killing the shark without outside assistance, smashes the radio. After a long chase, Quint harpoons the shark with another barrel. The line is tied to the stern cleats, but the shark drags the boat backward, swamping the deck and flooding the engine compartment. Quint prepares to sever the line to save the transom, but the cleats break off, keeping the barrels attached to the shark. To Brody's relief, Quint heads toward shore to draw the shark into shallower waters, but the overtaxed engine fails. As the boat slowly sinks, the trio attempts a riskier approach. Hooper suits up and enters the water in a shark-proof cage, intending to lethally inject the shark with strychnine via a hypodermic spear. The shark attacks the cage, causing Hooper to drop the spear. While the shark trashes the cage, Hooper escapes to the seabed. The shark leaps onto the boat, subsequently devouring Quint. Trapped on the sinking vessel, Brody shoves a scuba tank into the shark's mouth and, climbing onto the crow's nest, shoots the tank with a rifle. The resulting explosion kills the shark. Hooper resurfaces and he and Brody paddle back to Amity Island, clinging to the remaining barrels. Steve Cook The NFB of SC now has our own podcast and we hope you will take a listen! Jackson, Secretary Caroline Johnathan Asia, treasurer Shane, Acting president. Ice breaker questions What are you excited about for the upcoming semester? Reports Presidents report from Shane OABS will be a bell academy. OABS people are Shane, Asia, and Caroline. The state president will be there, and so will Suzanne. Shane's first year volunteering at Bell. Doing work with the state board to sort out internal business. Making sure we are for the membership restructuring. Talking to other students about what we are, that we are here, and the resources we offer. We have not had a treasurer's report since April. Do not have a fee for the month of June. Have new rewards with the business account. As of today, August's fourth account balance is $322.51. Asia makes a motion to do the treasurer's report. Jackson seconds the motion. Johnathan has paid his dues and does not change the account balance. Tee shirt fundraiser. Asia, it has been challenging to get the tee shirt guy. He is having difficulty finding stuff due to a flood that happened. He is working a new job. He told Asia Pricing she is trying to get him to email things. Caroline mentioned braille and a printed logo for the Zoom profile picture. Jackson mentioned raffle tickets. Suggestions were Amazon Echo Dot and air pods. Shane thinks raffles are the best thing. Caroline is still open to doing the Zoom logos. Put together different things for the division to get funds. Caroline has a clear goal for fundraisers seeking grants or donations to get assistance or funds from specific places or companies or having the companies donate. Fundraising goals are Zoom logos and attaching a price to the symbols. Post-bell camp put out an email to ask if people want Zoom logos. Caroline is talking about doing an otherworld trip. We are considering getting other world tickets and selling them. Select and start planning a fundraiser. We run one raffle for multiple prices. Direct ship the Amazon Echo to the customer. Johnathan talks about marketing to parents of blind children or blind parents. We may do a raffle of Amazon Echo, accessible medical devices, and coffee. We will have a meeting in two weeks, which is August 18. Asia motioned. Jackson seconded that the raffle will have two products. Asia found the information about the inferred thermometer but could not find the price. The motion is that the raffle will have two products. Motion carries for the two products. Two pieces of homework that Shane assigns. The Echo and thermometer do not have to be products. For the two-week meeting, think about what products and we will finalize the price of raffle tickets and if there are any changes. Caroline must send emails to see if people want the Zoom logos. State convention to state convention members run from this term. Many division chapters are running from January to December. The year would start January 1 and end in December of that year. Elections would still be in November. This election would allow any board member who is replaced to transition from old to new board. It would allow us to have a smoother transition. Take your position after the election. If you are an incoming board member, they do not know what they are doing. The change puts us back in line with the national policy of having members membership from January to December. We as a division need to do that effective from 2024 to 2025 beginning January 1. What are we doing for members who have paid up until July 1? Only if you paid after July 1 will you be given the rest of this year and all of 2024. As of the first, if you pay in the middle of the year, you will only be covered until December. We are following NABS. When talking to new students, remember that the outreach letter is there. Due to the membership paying after July 1, it will get the rest of the year. If they join after January 1, it will only cover the year. The next meeting is in two weeks; we do not need a complete business meeting on August 18, same time, 8 p.m., Same Zoom link. Caroline motions to adjourn. Jackson seconds the motion.
