Suddenly a group of white men appear in the doorway and tells Peter to "come on boy". They snatched him out of the house and Peter puts up a brief fight until one of the men points a gun at his wife's head. He then tell the men that he will walk. Aretha's father often has her sing for parties at their home, while her mother Barbara, separated from C.L., encourages her independence. The predatory actions of a family friend, combined with the sudden death of Barbara, traumatizes Aretha, who ceases to speak for weeks until her father demands that she sing at church. Seven years later, Aretha is a teen mother of two boys, but refuses to name their father. Touring as a gospel singer with family friend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., she meets local producer Ted White, but C.L. warns him to stay away. C.L. surprises Aretha with a meeting with Columbia Records executive John Hammond. She accepts a contract to record jazz standards, including "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive." Four albums later, Aretha lacks a signature hit. At a club, she attempts to honor family friend Dinah Washington by performing one of Dinah's songs; outraged, Dinah advises Aretha to find songs that move her. Struggling with the controlling influence of her father, Aretha begins a relationship with Ted. She brings him home to meet her family, leading C.L. to nearly shoot him, but announces Ted as her manager. Two years later, Ted and Aretha are married with a child. After nine albums with no real success, Aretha is dropped by Columbia. Ted secures a deal with veteran producer Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, who introduces her to a group of white musicians in Muscle Shoals in 1967. There, Aretha records "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)", but a jealous Ted becomes violent with her. Returning to Detroit with a black eye, Aretha reconnects with her family. Realizing her song has been released, becoming her first hit, Aretha takes a more hands-on role in her career. She makes her sisters her new backup singers and, despite their misgivings, reunites with Ted. Aretha and Carolyn are inspired to re-arrange Otis Redding's "Respect"; their version becomes a #1 single, launching Aretha to stardom by her 25th birthday. At a Detroit concert, Dr. King honors Aretha for her support of the Civil Rights Movement, proclaiming February 16 "Aretha Franklin Day". She has another signature hit, "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", but her career is complicated by Ted's increasingly volatile behavior. Embarking on a European tour in 1968, Aretha is confronted with a Time magazine cover story about Ted's abuse, and finally casts him out of her life. Dating her tour manager Ken Cunningham, Aretha eventually has her fourth child. In the wake of Dr. King's assassination, Aretha's father drunkenly argues with her over the direction of the Movement, telling her that she no longer walks in the spirit. Aretha continues to release hits but overworks herself, coping with the pressure through alcohol, and rejects her family's attempts to help her. During another overseas performance, a drunken Aretha falls from the stage. On a downward spiral and estranged from Ken and her family, she is consoled by a vision of her late mother. Aretha finds the strength to quit drinking, leading Ken to reconcile with her, and returns to her gospel roots. She approaches Wexler with the idea to produce her own gospel album, and he agrees on the condition that the recording of the album be filmed for a documentary. Beginning rehearsals, Aretha confides in family friend James Cleveland, now a respected gospel artist. The day of the album's recording, her father arrives to reconcile with her. The service begins and, with her family in attendance, Aretha sings her arrangement of the hymn, Amazing Grace. An epilogue reveals Aretha Franklin's legacy as a world-famous artist and the "Queen of Soul". Cast Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin[7] Skye Dakota Turner as young Aretha Forest Whitaker as C. L. The Zoom conference link will be the standard NABS Zoom link shown at the bottom of this message. The call will occur at 8 PM EST through 9 PM EST on Sunday, February 26, 2023. Topics will be of interest for blind students in middle school, high school, college and graduate school and professionals. Parents of blind school-aged children and educators are also welcome. Currently, the scheduled speakers, topics, talk descriptions, and speaker introductions, are: Opening Remarks: Trisha Kulkarni, president National Association of Blind Students, and John Miller, president Science and Engineering Division (8 PM EST) Speaker: Ken Perry (8:15 PM EST) Title: Producing Hardware as A Blind Engineer Description: APH released the Submersible Audio Light Sensor (SALS) at the end of last year, which is a Bluetooth light sensor probe for detecting opacity of Chemical liquids. SALS is the brain child of the blind chemist Dr. Cary Supalo. Cary worked with a sighted engineer to create the original prototypes which were standalone boxes. From that point, Ken Perry, a Blind Senior Software and Hardware engineer, stepped in to re-imagine the SALS device as a Bluetooth probe connected to IOS and Android. This talk will walk the path from Snap circuits, bread board and Arduino, and finally to NRF bare metal chip, and programming and design of the hardware. Speaker Introduction: Ken Perry has been working in Access Technology for 31 years and has been doing electronics for longer. Ken began with electronics early in life by helping his dad with anything he was allowed to. By the time he was eight, he was the de facto tube tester for his fathers at home TV repair shop. When he was nine, he helped his father build their first Color TV a Zenith kit. Ken joined the Air Force right out of High school following his father's footsteps as an Air force Electronics tech, until fait redirected his steps into Disability retirement. With his newfound adjusted vision on life, Ken returned to college and after listening to the VA counselors he was told that he wouldn't be able to do electronics. He took his electronics knowledge and used it to earn a bachelor's in software engineering. In 2012 he began working with Orbit Research to Develop the Orion TI-84 Talking Graphing calculator. Then In 2013, His wife and family bought him a Robotics kit and Snap Circuits kit that with his help they created accessible instructions for which he passed on to APH to create the four accessible Snap Circuit kits. He has worked with Orbit research on designs like orbit Reader, Graphiti, and with Independent Science on designing the SALS probe. This year APH will be releasing another one of his projects which is the Accessible Arduino kit with tactile schematics and 16 starter projects. Speaker: Annemiek van Leendert (8:30 PM EST) Title: Support for reading mathematical expressions in Braille Description: I will give a presentation about my PhD research. The main question that guided this research was: How can Braille readers improve reading and understanding of mathematical expressions? I have studied this question from different angles. The emphasis was on research into tactile perception, the professionalization of mathematics teachers and the representation of mathematical expressions in Braille. In this presentation, I will focus on tactile perception. I will show how finger-tracking technology has helped me understand the finger movements of Braille readers while reading mathematical expressions. Speaker Introduction: My name is Annemiek van Leendert. I am educated as a teacher of mathematics and physics. I have been working for more than 30 years at Koninklijke Visio, an organization in the Netherlands that provides care and education to people with a visual impairment. My expertise is mathematics for Braille readers. In 2021, I successfully defended my PhD dissertation. The title of my thesis is Improving Reading and Comprehending Mathematical Expressions in Braille. Speaker: Diego Vicioso (8:45 PM EST) Title: Getting Through Stem Without Braille Description: LateX and document conversion programs can be used to replace braille, but the learning curve is steep. Over the last two years, I have tried to collect my different experiences and bundle them into a format that's easy to understand. Speaker Introduction: I come from a country where it is almost impossible to learn braille or the nemeth code. I will try to provide descriptions of what has worked for me, and what hasn't. I an a huge advocate for brief study abroad trips, as it gives you a great sense of the country your exploring, but without the commitment of staying there for an entire semester. Usually universities design these trips so you can get a broad overview of the culture and life style, which I highly appreciate. I personally was debating on doing an entire semester abroad, but decided against it because I, frankly, could not decide which country I would be comfortable staying in for 4 months and did not have any background or planning to get a background in any foreign language. If you have a place you have been dreaming of visiting, and want to/already know the native language, I would definitely encourage you to go abroad for a semester. However, if you want a small taste of life abroad, I would push for the short form trips. I will also note, I never felt that adjusting to my surroundings from a blindness perspective would have changed my mind of changing the duration of my stay. It was surely an adjustment, especially with the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen constantly breaking my cane tips, but I felt very at home and comfortable. Surely, there’s a sense of wanting to stay longer and wishing that you were still there when you get back to the states, but I think this is analogous to abled-bodied individuals feelings when returning home. Overall, I would definitely encourage you to take advantage of the short term study abroad, I think you’ll have a blast. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to me. The letter came about as the result of comments made by HumanWare representatives in episode 212 of the Mosen at large podcast that not only was the forthcoming third generation Stream not yet supported by Audible, but changes to Audible Sync prevented new authorisations of current models. During the week, I received a comprehensive audio demonstration from a listener, which will air in Mosen at Large 213, showing that with the latest version of Audible Sync, authorisation of the current generation Stream has now been reinstated. I should emphasise that this is not a result of the open letter, the Audible Sync update had been published previously but it seems Audible had not communicated this fix to product management at HumanWare. I have contacted HumanWare and they confirm that they have heard similar and verified the fix with internal testing. This is good news for all current Stream owners. While matters are less clear with the third generation Stream and it appears HumanWare may need still to do some work on their side, things are also looking positive there as well. It is a pity that communication between Audible and HumanWare hasn’t been better, but it is great that those who choose to read Audible books on the Stream can do so now with the current device, and should be able to do so soon if they purchase the new model. Full credit to Amazon for responding, but I encourage larger companies to take the time to communicate with those serving the blind community. We are a small market, but the consequences of these things are significant for us. While better communications would have saved us the bother of this open letter altogether, it has been a positive demonstration that we care about this issue. --- Update to To Amazon's Audible.com division: Please reinstate support for HumanWare's popular Victor Reader Stream player for the blind and low vision community -- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG antivirus software. www.avg.com From schoi at nfbmo.org Fri Feb 3 23:06:41 2023 From: schoi at nfbmo.org (Seyoon Choi) Date: Fri, 3 Feb 2023 17:06:41 -0600 Subject: [NABS-L] Summer short-term study abroad In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <735ED2B6-2689-4B8F-987F-F51CEFBCEAAE@nfbmo.org> Another great resource from NABS content creation committee is a podcast on this exact topic of studying abroad. HumanWare have let me know that they will be meeting bi-weekly with Audible and that communications have been strengthened. Hopefully, this will avert future disruptions that have in the past in the cause of concern. HumanWare further advise that the third-generation Victor Reader Stream will not support Audible at launch because further work is required on both sides, but that a software update will be released, most likely in April or May, that will provide Audible support. I am also advised that the open letter was circulated among Audible staff and that they were moved and impressed by the passion our community displayed. So with this issue resolved, I will conclude with two expressions of thanks. Thanks to Audible for listening so respectfully, being so responsive, and recognizing the choice that many in our community have made to read Audible content on the Victor Reader Stream. And thank you to everyone who took the trouble to add their names to the letter. Sometimes, it feels like we are too insignificant, as individuals and even as a community, to make change. But when those seeking change and those able to make that change happen are willing to engage with courtesy and compassion, we can all make good things happen. Yes, there a couple of issues with the site, but it is still usable. In a perfect world we would have every website be completely accessible without having to use our problem-solving skills, but it's not a perfect world. Even our national website has a few corks that make it interesting to use, especially if someone is a new computer user. I made my selections and completed my order with no assistance. I will mention that if you get an error message saying that you need to select before adding it the cart that must mean it's out of stock, because it doesn't give the in-stock numbers like on other products. Is there room for improvement, absolutely! Writing to the company directly instead of listing the complaints on the list serve would be more beneficial. Also asking if a company is legit when another division is doing a fund-raiser is offensive to me. I would hope if they were doing a fund-raiser they have had the sense to check into the company.... I'm excited to get my coffee and I hope others will give it a try and support the senior division of South Carolina! Sincerely, Jamie K. Another trick that works for me is to write out your thoughts in a Word document, edit that document, then copy and paste it into the discussion board. You don't have to do this option, but it works for anyone who likes to use it. I find the menus on the discussion boards a bit clunky so this is a good work around. I hope this helps! Currently, the scheduled speakers, topics, talk descriptions, and speaker introductions, are: Opening Remarks: Trisha Kulkarni, president National Association of Blind Students, and John Miller, president Science and Engineering Division (8 PM EST) Speaker: Gene Kim (8:12 PM EST) Title: NFB Science and Engineering Division Systemic Access Mentorship Program Speaker: Ken Perry (8:15 PM EST) Title: Producing Hardware as A Blind Engineer Description: APH released the Submersible Audio Light Sensor (SALS) at the end of last year, which is a Bluetooth light sensor probe for detecting opacity of Chemical liquids.
