I had the chance to interview him during the fall semester for my human rights class at UConn. I learned a lot about his work on the Marrakesh Treaty and copyright law for the blind, as well as other court cases that were meaningful to him. As a tribute, I published the interview on my personal website, Blind Pioneers. He was truly a remarkable man and I was fortunate to get the opportunity to speak with him about his accomplishments and learn about his contributions to the blind community. Here is the link. Nursing a gambling addiction that has left him destitute, he recounts how he first met Presley. Raised mostly by his doting mother Gladys, Presley spends his childhood in the poorest parts of Mississippi, finding an escape in the comic book adventures of Captain Marvel Jr. and especially in song. However, upon moving with his parents to Memphis, he is ridiculed by his peers due to his fascination with the African-American music of Memphis's Beale Street. At this time, Parker is a carnival "huckster" who fancies himself a modern-day P. T. Barnum. Although partnered with country singer Hank Snow, Parker realizes Presley's crossover potential when he hears him "sounding black" on "That's All Right". That night, he sees Presley at a "Louisiana Hayride" performance, discovering a talented musician with strong sex appeal. Parker meets with Presley at the carnival and persuades him to let him take control of his career, beginning a meteoric ascent that sees the Presley family lifted out of poverty. The regional public is divided in their view of the singer. Feeling that Presley's music will corrupt white children and stoke racial hostility, the segregationist Southern Democrat Mississippi Senator James Eastland calls Parker to an informal hearing, during which he questions Parker about his mysterious past. After Presley's charged dance moves at a concert, he faces legal trouble. Parker persuades the government to draft Presley into the US Army instead. During his military service in West Germany, Presley is devastated by his mother's alcoholism-induced death. He finds solace when he meets Priscilla Beaulieu, the teenage daughter of an United States Air Force pilot. After his discharge, he resumes his film career and marries Priscilla years later. As the popular culture of the 1960s passes Presley by, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy devastate him. Although he wants to become more politically outspoken in his music, Parker only allows him to release frivolous feel-good songs for a Christmas special television. However, this does not dissuade him. His performance choices in the special, including the closing number, "If I Can Dream", are presented and perceived as acts of not only his past songs, but also political commentary. Infuriated corporate sponsors threaten litigation, while a disgusted Parker believes Presley has been "brainwashed by hippies". Nevertheless, the show is highly successful. After the special, Presley headlines at the largest showroom in Las Vegas, the International Hotel, and resumes concert tours. Parker's control of Presley's life tightens up as he refuses Presley's request for a world tour despite initially promising him and manipulates him into signing a contract for a lengthy Las Vegas casino residency. Presley's problematic behavior and prescription drug addiction overtake him, and a despondent Priscilla divorces him on January 8, 1973, taking their daughter Lisa Marie with her. Presley discovers the truth that Parker cannot leave the country, because he is a stateless illegal immigrant named Andreas (Dries) van Kuijk, and fires him on September 3, 1973. Parker and Presley argue over the latter's $8 million debt to the former and the record label for his numerous lavish expenses. Parker convinces Presley of their symbiotic relationship and, while they rarely see each other afterward, Parker continues as his manager. Presley continues a rigorous schedule of shows that leaves him increasingly exhausted. In 1975, Presley expresses his greatest fear to Priscilla of being forgotten after he dies as he believes he hasn't achieved anything worthwhile. At one of his final shows on June 21, 1977 in Rapid City, South Dakota,[7] Presley, now obese and pale, sings "Unchained Melody" and ends the performance to thunderous applause. As he finishes his recollection, Parker dies in 1997, impoverished and alone, while Presley, who died on August 16, 1977, is beloved worldwide and is the best-selling solo artist in history, with his influence and legacy on music continuing to the present day. Although the audio goes through just fine. So long story short, absolutely doable, it may just take a workaround. Google Chrome is usually fine, with Zoom screen sharing set to optimize for video and sharing computer audio and have it transmit stereo as an option, rather than mono. Message-ID: Live now!!! Calling all football fanatics and frenemies! As Super Bowl LVII approaches, we’re happy to revive a fan favorite with the launch of 2023 Super Bowl Roulette! This fundraiser, which consists of nothing more than a well formatted spreadsheet, is open to all. Whether you’re slaying the game and holding the number one seed in your Fantasy Football league or you can’t tell the difference between offense and defense, you could win big alongside the Super Bowl champions on February 12, 2023. How does it all work, you ask? Let’s start with the spreadsheet itself. Horizontally across the top of the sheet, the numbers 1-9, followed by a 0 are displayed. The same numbers are also listed vertically down the far left column. The horizontal and vertical numbers intersect in 100 numbered squares on the sheet. For example, number 3 on the horizontal line meets number 1 on the vertical line in intersecting square 3. The horizontal line represents the team score from the National Football Conference (NFC), and the vertical line represents the team score from the American Football Conference (AFC). Now, how do you play? Each numbered box can be purchased for only $5, and you can buy as many boxes as you want. Because we want anyone and everyone to have a chance at winning big, boxes are assigned upon purchase using a random number generator. No knowledge of the sport is required to win. But how do I win? After purchasing your squares, you have four chances to win during the game—at the end of each quarter. The secret to winning lies in the scores of the teams. The final digit in each team’s score, or, if the score is a single digit, the only number, decides the winner. If you own the square where the two ending scores intersect, you win! For example, if you own box 3 from our example above, your horizontal or NFC score has to end in 3 (this number could be 3, 43, 13, etc.) and your vertical or AFC score has to end in 1 (this number could be 1, 61, 11, etc.) If your NFC score ends in 3, and your AFC score ends in 1, you win! So what do I win? At the end of each quarter, the owner of the square that denotes the game’s current score wins $25, and whoever owns the square denoting the game’s final score wins $50! What if the score of the game stays the same? Great question! Each square can win two times i.e. two quarters for a total of $50 or a quarter and the final score for a total of $75. How do I buy my square(s)? Getting in on the action is easy! Get in touch with NABS Treasurer, Elizabeth Rouse, at elizabethrouse.nfb at gmail.com or by phone at 563-210-1854. Let her know how many squares you’d like to purchase and how you’ll be paying. Then, send your payments via PayPal (@NABSPayments) or Zelle (using the email address nabs.president at gmail.com). Make sure to put “Super Bowl Roulette” in the notation line of your transaction, and once Elizabeth confirms that your payment has been received, she will let you know what squares you own. Then, wait for February 12th, and keep an eye on the score! Still have questions? Reach out to Elizabeth, and she’ll clarify anything you need. Live now!!! It is an opportunity for teenage girls with all types of disabilities and between the ages of-and 18 to participate in a year long mentoring and leadership experience. Please read below for more information and direct any questions to Curran Brown at curran at disabilityempowhernetwork.org . Warmly, Kenia From: Curran Brown > Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2023 10:58 AM To: Kflores > Subject: [Ext] Help us recruit! EmpowHer Camp Applications OPEN! Hello Kenia, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Curran Brown and I am working at Disability EmpowHer Network (DEN) as the Camp Director of EmpowHer Camp. In case you are not familiar with our organization, DEN is a one of a kind organization that strives to empower girls with disabilities through mentoring and transformational learning experiences. We focus on providing opportunities to enhance leadership skills and confidence while forming a community and together supporting young women with disabilities to live to their full potential. Visit our website for more information about DEN. We believe that when disabled girls lead, we all succeed, which is why in 2021 DEN started the EmpowHer Camp experience to equip teenage girls with disabilities with the tools to lead in their lives, schools, and communities. I am ecstatic to share that EmpowHer Camp is currently accepting applications for our third class of young leaders. What is the EmpowHer Camp experience you may ask? EmpowHer Camp is an opportunity for teenage girls with all types of disabilities and between the ages of 13 and 18 to participate in a year long mentoring and leadership experience. It starts with one week of adventurous camping in the Adirondacks where campers explore nature, make friends, and laugh around the campfire. Campers also connect with their mentors who will help them set and achieve goals for the year. After the camping trip with the help of their mentor who they meet with each month, participants go home and work on a yearlong project about disaster preparedness for people with disabilities that interests them. In summer of 2024, participants reunite in Washington, D.C. where they present their projects, spend time with friends and mentors, meet with Congress, practice job skills, explore our nation’s capital, and more. There is no cost to the girls and we even assist with the cost of transportation for all participants for the camping trip and reunion trip. More information can be found on the website including videos that feature our first two classes of EmpowHer Camp, so go check out what our young leaders have been up to so far. EmpowHer Camp is more than just a year long experience, the connections made are lifelong and focus on supporting women’s independence, growth, facilitating professional opportunities, and economic self-sufficiency. As Camp Director of EmpowHer Camp I want to provide this opportunity to as many girls with disabilities as possible. Therefore I am here because I believe you can help me reach my goal by spreading the word! Due to your extensive network in the Disability Community and your continuing support and effort in empowering young people with disabilities, DEN would love your support in finding our next class of amazing young leaders. I would greatly appreciate it if you could spread the word to your network. Or if you have someone in mind you think would benefit from the EmpowHer Camp experience, please share with them directly or let me know and we can reach out to them. I am linking a communications toolkit that includes some social media language, email templates, and graphics that may be helpful to spread the word. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me at curran at disabilityempowhernetwork.org or call me at 302.217.3011. Looking forward to hearing from you. I recommend that you get on your new university's website, find the link to the Blackboard app they use and then, install it on your smart phone. I often do some things on my computer and some on my phone. This was true when I used Blackboard and I still do it with Canvas. I don't know about the latest updates and how they work with Blackboard. When I used it, at the time, I found it to be mostly accessible, but there were a few things I couldn't do with it, and there were a few clunky tasks it had at the time. I currently use Canvas which I enjoy. I enjoyed my time with Blackboard over all as well. Is it intuitive? Is it easy to navigate? Are there any glitches I should know about? Is there an app? I appreciate your feedback. Thank you! Why are blind people forced to use the quote, priority seating on public transportation? I noticed this not only in Chicago, but also on amtrack trains. I was at a train station in Ann Arbor and was walking out to catch the train with everyone else. Before the train arrived at the station, someone working there stood next to me with a ramp. When the train stopped he immediately spoke to the workers on the train and said I was visually impaired without my permission. Then he told everyone to wait while he helped me on the train. He directed me to a seat he said was by the bathroom, and the last seat on the train. I said I wanted to sit by the other seats since these two seats were separate from all the other. He also said that they were sold out and asked if this was okay? So I sat there while all the other passengers had the freedom to sit where ever they wanted. I’m kind of insulted that the reason they had me sit there was because the bathroom was behind the seat. Doesn’t anyone else feel bothered by this? What can we all do to break this barrier that isolates people with disabilities from everyone else on public transportation? Does anyone care about this? In other words, no one can force you to accept an accommodation you don't want. I've experienced this on airplanes when I worked my guide dogs. Flight attendants always wanted me to sit in the bulkhead, and I didn't like sitting there with my dogs, particularly my second one. I just ignored them and did what I wanted, and they never stopped me. I suggest just telling people a firm, no, thank you, in situations like this. Tell them you know where your seat is, can make it to your seat, whatever. Amtrack people can be completely overzealous when offering help, so it might be difficult to get through to them. If that's the case, you will have to decide if you want to stand your ground or just go with the flow. Hope that helps, Julie On 1/28/23, Elizabeth Sprecher via NABS-L wrote: > Hey, > So how are you supposed to do that when everyone is getting on quickly? > > Sent from my iPhone > >> On Jan 28, 2023, at 9:28 PM, Zachary N. Please feel free to circulate this far and wide. For some time now, it has become more difficult to link a Humanware Victor Reader Stream product with the Audible book service via its Audible Sync application. This means that it is not possible for those people to use the Stream with the Audible book service. Audible is one of the primary methods these days for listening to audio books and this is undoubtedly the device on which many people choose to hear them. As a person that gets questions about reading devices, etc. I often recommend that people use the Victor Reader Stream. As of this moment, anyone who wishes to link such a device to Audible cannot do so and certainly the new upcoming version 3, to be released in February, will not be supported. I urge you please if you have a moment to sign an accessible online petition to try to persuade Amazon and Audible to work with Humanware so as to ensure this service is reinstated. Even if you are not a Stream user, I would be grateful please for a minute of your time so that those of us who use Streams on a daily basis have a chance of protecting our listening to Audible books in the future. https://openletter.earth/to-amazons-audiblecom-division-please-reinstate-support-for-humanwares-popular-victor-reader-stream-player-for-the-blind-and-low-vision-community-c26fcf78 Thank you for reading. I don't have a guide dog, although I do have a friend who has one (I've already visited him twice now in the past year or so). He told me that when he flies on Southwest Airlines (which has no assigned seating), the flight attendants will sometimes try to suggest he sit in the back. He doesn't like sitting in the front either, and what he usually does is tell them the back is more convenient for him and his dog. He says they normally relent after he makes his case to them. As a blind person, it's your responsibility to tell the airport or station employees what you need or don't need. I would even go so far as to tell them that forcing you to do something you don't want is an ADA violation (that's what I did one time when an airport employee tried to force me to ride in a wheelchair). I've never rode on Amtrak on my own before, although, as someone else pointed out, your seat is assigned on the Amtrak train. If you have your ticket on your phone, you should be able to find what your seat is. That way, if the conductor or station employee is assisting you, you can tell him/her what your seat is. Otherwise, you can show them your ticket on paper if you printed it out or picked it up at the station. As for traveling on a plane, if you're traveling domestically within the United States, I'd recommend flying with Southwest Airlines. It's relatively cheap compared to other airlines, and it seems to be the go-to airline for lots of Americans out there, blind or sighted. From my experience flying with them, I've also found them to be overwhelmingly accommodating to people with visual impairments, and most (if not all) employees have been very responsive and understanding when I've informed them anything they did to be unnecessary. They also have no assigned seating (unlike other airlines). This means that by law, the employees are not allowed to force you to sit anywhere you don't want to, particularly if you tell them as such. So yes, it's all a matter of advocacy and you knowing your specific individual needs. I hope all this info is helpful. I have a Victor Stream, and I've had an Audile membership for almost fifteen years now. I've always been able to listen to audio books on Audible; in fact the Stream has an Audible bookshelf designed specifically for all your Audible books. If you have a Windows computer, you can install the Audible Manager program to download the book to your device, then use the Humanware Companion to copy it onto your Stream. I completely understand where you're going with this; personally, I would love it if Humanware worked together with Amazon to implement the Audible service right onto the Stream the way it is possible with other book services. However, sometimes we do have to do things differently, even if it's not exactly how we desire. Downloading audio books from Audible is totally possible so long as you have a computer equipped with the necessary software, so to say that reading Audible content on the Stream is impossible is simply untrue and unsubstantiated. During my experience, I have never had an assigned seat on Amtrak. I have always been able to sit where I want too without any complaints. On the other hand, when I have traveled on the airplane, I tell them in advance that I don't need a wheelchair. If it is a large airport and I am on borrowed time I will use the cart (the one they drive inside the building). When I use public transportation, I have never been forced to sit in a particular seat. The ADA says that priority seating is required for them to have for those individuals who need it and want it BUT we are not required it use if we don't want too. In mosen at large episode 212, entitled "All that’s new in HumanWare’s Victor Reader Stream third generation, is it time for us to do visual interpretation differently, and an Australian bar says if you’re blind and by yourself, it’s a safety risk for you to drink" Jonathan mosen interviewed humanware and this came up, and humanware was very transparent that while this was a discussion they were having, etc. amazon/audible while not hostile to the initiative, they just weren't doing anything about it currently. I'd recommend you listen to the podcast episode I link above for complete details. After that podcast, this post, that I paraphrased in my original message was circulating on mastodon and on twitter. ---begin post--- On the Mosen at Large podcast, HumanWare detailed how a recent release of Audible Sync has broken support for the current generation of the Victor Reader Stream. If you are authorised already, you’re fine, but authorisation for new users is broken. This issue extends to lack of support for the third generation of the Stream, which HumanWare expects to release initially to the US market sometime in February. Since this episode was published only a few hours ago, I’ve received a large number of inquiries asking if I would help set up some sort of open letter or petition to Audible about this issue. While I am not a Stream user myself, I am happy to help, because I strongly support blind people being able to access information in the way that works for them. There is no doubt that the loss of Audible support for the Stream will deprive a good number of people of their preferred means of reading Audible books, and some will unsubscribe from Audible altogether. I have now set up an open letter to Audible which you can sign if you wish. I’ve taken care to use a site that is accessible and does not needlessly collect information from you. I have had representatives from Audible on Mosen at Large in the Past. I will use those contacts to ensure the letter gets to the right place, and will also invite Audible on the podcast for comment. If you support this initiative, please spread the word via email lists and social media. Here is the link to the open letter. https://bit.ly/AudibleStreamSupport ---end post--- I hope this post I showed above, and the podcast episode I linked to above brings some clarity and gives you the information you are seeking. There's something wrong with that kind of experience! Luckily, the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA) is on our side here. I'm a regular user of my local city bus. If I wanted, I could use the seats in the back of the bus, but I choose the ones up in the front because it gives me the opportunity to talk with the driver whenever I need to do so such as whenever I need to make sure that I'm getting off at the right stop, particularly when I'm using a stop that's not on the local list of announced bus stops since they usually stick to the major stops. I also will sometimes have to inform the driver when the recorded announcements are not working because I have noticed that I'll often notice this before the drivers do. I'm not forced to use these seats in the front, I do it by choice to take care of these practical needs, particularly when I notice that technology on the bus isn't working correctly. I have used Amtrack in the past, and probably will use them again in the future. I have not had problems with finding a seat, or even, one that I don't prefer. I usually will go ahead and get on early when it's an option, but I choose it when I use any kind of public transportation anyway. I have had the worst general luck with airport security. I find them to be over zellas, particularly at the airport security lines. Ok, I have had my share of errors when I've forgotten to empty a water bottle, but that was totally my fault. Oops! Beyond that, I have had one experience where I was assisting a blind traveler with their flight when the airport security decided to give both myself and the other traveler a whole body search, even though we have told the security staff the rules of the ADA. Mind you, I was not flying myself on this particular trip, but it still happened anyway. On an unrelated trip, this time, I was flying by myself, coming home from visiting family in Houston, Texas. During my flight, I had a layover in Pheonox, Arazona. I was trying to catch my connecting flight there. The plane I was on was running late going into Phenox, Arazona due to one of the summer storms they had in Arazona. The airport staff went ahead and gave me the wheel chair, even though I didn't need it, and mind you, I wound up missing my connecting flight after all. I still managed to take an alternative route home, going through Vegas before I made it home. Mind you, this was back in 2007, and it was before I knew all of the ADA's rules regarding flying. I also was doing everything I knew to catch my connecting flight even though that didn't work out. In any case, even to this day, I still warn anyone who's blind and who flies through Pheonox that the staff there believe in playing the wheelchair card and to make sure to be very emphatic when one puts their foot down. I also make it a point to refuse to allow security to take my cane away, accept for when it's not avoidable for them to do so. Since I use a folding cane, by choice, I'll fold it whenever it's not needed, accept for when I'm on the bus, which is helpful because it shows to the world that I can get it out of anyone's way, but that when I'm using it, I don't use it for fun, but most importantly, that I'm blind and I know what I want and when I want it. I have also used the cart on more than one occasion, both at Amtrack and at the airport because it's practical to do so when it's needed. I'm sure that I'll fly again just like I did in the past. I know that I have the ADA on my side and that I'm willing to enforce it when it's needed. I have flown on other, very successful flights without ADA violations. I have had my share of successful rides on Amtrack, also without ADA violations. I continue to ride the city bus without problems every day that I attend school in person. However, the program I was in does offer students the opportunity to study for five weeks in three different countries--Paris, Rome, Italy, and Limerick, Ireland. As a matter of fact, I actually did make friends who took a part in that other program, which is called Discover the World. I was very impressed that she managed to study in three different places as someone with a visual impairment who had never traveled to Europe before. She told me it definitely helped that she already had friends who were able to guide her through the process. I think it can definitely help you if you know at least someone/others who will be in the same program as you. Personally, I didn't know anyone in the program before I went abroad, however it did help immensely that I was fluent in the French language, and also that I was actually already familiar with France from summer childhood visits to see my maternal relatives. Otherwise, if you don't know anyone else, I've actually found that it's far easier to make friends while studying abroad than in normal college settings. This is because the community at study-abroad programs is typically a much smaller and friendlier environment. This means there would be far less people judging you for being blind, and thus people are more likely to see you for the person you really are (that definitely happened to me when I was studying abroad in Paris). Also, I remember you mentioning a while back that you plan to study in Spain. I'm not real familiar with their culture and people's general attitudes if you don't speak Spanish (that is, if you're not familiar with the language). In France, however, it seems like people become far more comfortable when they can see you can speak French, at least a little bit. I'm saying this because that could impact your ability to receive adequate mobility training if you don't speak the language of the country. Otherwise, ask the people in charge of your study-abroad program if they can assist you with this sort of thing. I suggest you either contact them on the phone, or send them an email if you have their contact information (in fact, the corrdinator of my study-abroad program was actually the one who referred me to my O and M instructor in Paris). I hope all this info is helpful. If you'd like, I'll share the article I wrote for my school newspaper a couple of years ago about my experience studying abroad in Paris during my junior year. The article might help you with the answers to some of your questions as well (although I do have to warn you that it may arise from somewhat of a biased viewpoint as someone who has already had experience with both the country and language). I wish you the best of luck with your study-abroad experience this upcoming summer! I will issue you a trigger warning, though, which I also gave the creator of the original thread in my reply to her. The article is completely from the perspective of someone who has gained vast experience with both the country and city (Paris, France), as well as familarity with the native language. As a result, it may or may not help someone who has no experience at all with either the country or language (feel free to let me know what you all think). In any case, however, here is the lino to the article in question. Happy reading! I do have something else to add that I forgot in my reply the other day. When traveling on any kind of public transportation, I've found that it helps if you have good travel skills using a cane and guide dog. For example, when I travel on a plane, I prefer to get assistance getting from the check-in desk, through security, and to the boarding gate at the airport (I might also request help if I need to use the restroom or want to grab a bite to eat as well). This is because airports and train stations are very open spaces, with not a whole lot of physical landmarks to help guide us. As a result, they're sadly not the best type of environments for blind people to be able to navigate on our own. On the other hand, however, I can just use my cane when going down the jetway to get to the plane. This is because contrary to the general area in the airport, jetways/jet bridges are easy to navigate with a cane. There's a wall on the right hand side (and possibly on the left as well) that you can trail which helps guide you along the path from the terminal to the plane. Being able to enter/exit the plane on your own is especially helpful on an airline like Southwest, which as I mentioned earlier, has no assigned seating. If I were to get assistance down the jetway, then chances are the person helping me might automatically just bring me to the front-most seat on the plane. I personally hate the front rows on planes, primarily because you have no other option but to stow your carry-on bags in the overhead compartment. I like to listen to my Victor Stream when I'm flying on a plane, and I have much easier access to my bag when sitting in the back, since I can just stow it underneath the seat in front of me. Plus, when finding my own way towards a seat on the plane using only my cane, it's very likely the flight attendants could see that I was independent, and just as capable of doing at least some things the same way as sighted people. I know I'm probably starting to ramble a little here, but the general gist of my email is that it definitely help tremendously if you can do at least some things on your own, and not be fully 100% reliant on the airport or station employees for just about everything just because you happen to be blind... when you're traveling on a train, for example, you could try to find an empty seat using your cane. I'm not exactly sure how it works on Amtrak since I've never taken that on my own before, but I do know each car is separated by a door. So you can use your cane to try and find the door opener, then use your orientation and mobility skills to calculate how close or far you might have to travel to find an empty seat. Your cane or dog should let you know whether a seat is empty or occupied. Then, if you want to grab a bite to eat during the ride, ask the conductor where the cafe car is located in relation to where you're currently seated (in the airport, I usually just ask the gate agent to direct me to where the jetway is located in relation to the ticket counter using verbal directions. If they try to offer me help going down the jetway, I usually just tell them I don't need it. Sometimes they might send someone to follow me down the jetway, I guess just to make sure I make it safe and sound onto the plane. However, that person is typically walking right behind me and is therefore not personally guiding me). So yes, it definitely helps a lot if you can incorporate your O and M and travel skills into your travels. I'm obviously not a mind-reader, so I can't tell what goes on inside the minds of airport and station employees. However, it's very likely that upon seeing a blind traveler finding a seat and/or entering and exiting the plane or train independently (along with just advocating for themselves), they might be thinking something along the lines of, Hmm. This person may be disabled, but maybe they're not completely incapable. That's definitely a good thing if nothing else. Once again, I hope all this info is helpful, both what I just shared as well as in my other reply. Thanks again, and please have a good evening.
