In case you are not familiar with our organization, DEN is a one of a kind organization that strives to empower girls with disabilities through mentoring and transformational learning experiences. We believe that when disabled girls lead, we all succeed, which is why in 2021 DEN started the EmpowHer Camp experience to equip teenage girls with disabilities with the tools to lead in their lives, schools,and communities.

What is the EmpowHer Camp experience you may ask? 

EmpowHer Camp is an opportunity for teenage girls with all types of disabilities and between the ages of 13 and 18 to participate in a year long mentoring and leadership experience. It starts with one week of adventurous camping in the Adirondacks where campers explore nature, make friends, and laugh around the campfire. Campers also connect with their mentors who will help them set and achieve goals for the year. After the camping trip with the help of their mentor who they meet with each month, participants go home and work on a yearlong project about disaster preparedness for people with disabilities that interests them. In summer of 2024, participants reunite in Washington, D.C. where they present their projects, spend time with friends and mentors, meet with Congress, practice job skills, explore our nation’s capital, and more. 

There is no cost to the girls and we even assist with the cost of transportation for all participants for the camping trip and reunion trip. More information can be found on the website including videos that feature our first two classes of EmpowHer Camp, so go check out what our young leaders have been up to so far. EmpowHer Camp is more than just a year long experience, the connections made are lifelong and focus on supporting women’s independence, growth, facilitating professional opportunities, and economic self-sufficiency. As Camp Director of  EmpowHer Camp I want to provide this opportunity to as many girls with disabilities as possible. Therefore I am here because I believe you can help me reach my goal by spreading the word!
