Mike was diagnosed with Usher syndrome in 1997. By 2014, his vision had deteriorated to the point where he could no longer drive and used a cane to get around. He launched a social media campaign to crowdsource ideas for places he should see before his vision became any worse. During his travels, he conducted interviews with other people experiencing vision loss and created a blog. He established Flight for Sight to give other people the chance to take a meaningful trip and produce educational content to advance the understanding of blindness. ### From oriolefan38 at gmail.com Sun Jun 11 01:02:00 2023 From: oriolefan38 at gmail.com (Zachary Ledford) Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2023 19:02:00 -0600 Subject: [NABS-L] Passport to paradise: Traveling with UABS! I am hoping that you might be able to help a participant of our Access To Exchange Externship. Please see the details of what she is looking for below. If you are an alumnus of an exchange program with a disability, please consider reaching out. If you think you might know an alumnus with a disability of an international exchange program, please forward this request to them. To learn more about the externship go to www.miusa.org/externship Hello, everyone! I hope you're doing well. My name is Abena, and I recently graduated from the University of Virginia. During the past semester, I had an incredible opportunity to study abroad in the beautiful city of Bilbao, Spain. I am currently an Access to Exchange Extern with the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange. Externs develop and carry out an outreach project to support NCDE's goal of increasing the participation of people with disabilities in international exchange. For my externship project, I plan to create a series of audio interviews via Zoom. Each interview will delve into the unique stories of individuals with disabilities who have embarked on journeys to various countries. Through these interviews, we will explore their personal experiences of disability in the host countries, covering aspects such as accessibility, cultural attitudes, and anything else that arises during our conversations. To bring these interviews to life, I plan to animate the audio recordings and share them on the MiUSA website. It's crucial to me that this project reflects diversity in multiple aspects. I aim to showcase a wide range of representation in terms of the exchange program, location, and the disabilities experienced by the individuals featured. If you're interested in being interviewed for this project and sharing your stories about educational travel as a person with disabilities, please reach out to me at asa4nu2virginia.edu or +1 540 406 2708. I hope everyone has a blessed Juneteenth. This Friday at 7 PM EST, join the Massachusetts Association of Blind Students for a study abroad presentation via zoom. One of our students will talk about her semester in Spain, and I will tell you about my trip to Tanzania. Blindness is not a barrier to studying abroad, but we do face unique challenges. Come and ask us questions! Here is the zoom information. I've been subscribed to some blind mailing lists, but I do not post often. I have an issue related to being a student. I am blind and use JAWS. I use Microsoft Word for word processing. When I do a spell check and grammar check, JAWS will say what mistakes are made and how to correct them. However, I have a sighted professor that tells me that I have over 40 grammar mistakes. It appears that Word does not catch everything but there is software that sighted people can use to find out grammar mistakes. I am wondering if anyone here uses any grammar checker that is blind friendly? That being said, I would strongly suggest checking your document line by line for spelling mistakes. Additionally, if you are a braille reader, having a braille display handy will help with finding those little grammar issues as well (I find that this helps a great deal.) Hope this helps. Also, I hope that your professor understands the position you are in with the technology and software that you use. I use spell check for my spelling errors. As for grammar, I have had good luck with taking writing courses and using my school's writing resources at the same time. If that's not available or you're not taking college classes or classes of any kind, you can check line by line for spelling and grammar errors. Spell check is decent for spelling errors. If you use JAWS, it's F7. You can also try asking someone to spot you and help you see your writing errors as well. That's another option. I have never had luck with Gramerly because I find it inaccessible as well. I also sometimes ask SIRI to spell a word. The A-ladie can also help with spelling too. There is also Google for specific grammar rules as well. There are also books like ones written by the Grammar Girl and she also does a podcast with tips and tricks to improve your grammar. Also, take a look at the writing of others and see how well they write. Try to see if you can match the best looking sentences you find and practice writing them or similar sentences. I think that might help you out as well. I hope this helps! Spell check doesn't catch everything, especially grammar errors, but it's still very helpful to keep using because it will catch a lot of errors that would have been missed. I was going to suggest a writing course which may be more helpful in the long term. I teach Braille Music but litracy comes up some times. I use MS Word's F7 but it can only help so much. For instance, there and their are spelled correctly but they are context dependant and Word's software doesn't always ge this right which is where a decent dictionary can come in handy. Ask your professor to tell you which kinds of errors appear the most in your work. Is it extra spaces between words? That's one of my problems but Word spots this. Is it punctuation, layout, or case sensitive words getting mixed up. If you know which issues you have, you'll be better placed to decide which type of writing course you need. I have a Language Master which is a stand alone machine. My favourite function is the confusables button. You type in a word and it lists other words which sound the same with different spellings and a brief definition of each. HTH, very best wishes, Sandra. I was able to read it electronically and save it on my braille display. My professor also allowed me to take the Cd with the appropriate music for a quiz down to the Disability Services office. I was able to listen to the track quietly while I completed the quiz for the chapter that we were discussing. Based on the popular TI-84 Plus model from Texas Instruments, the market-leader in calculators and educational technology, the Orion TI-84 Plus represents a breakthrough in STEM education for blind and visually impaired students. Since its functions are the same as the TI-84 Plus, the Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator is very easy for teachers to help with. A high-quality, synthesized voice announces each key and the answer on the display, providing a choice of speech rates, voices, etc. The Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator consists of a compact accessory that is attached to the top of the TI-84 Plus and enables someone who is visually impaired to interact with the TI-84 Plus using speech, audio, and haptic (vibration) feedback. The high-quality synthesized speech reads out all textual and symbolic information on the LCD screen, as well as each keypress. Graphs can be explored using either spoken announcements or the unique Sono Graph audio and haptic feedback which provides multi-modal feedback. The user can also review the contents of the screen at any time, including all text and graphical information, without affecting the calculation. The Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator is fully expandable with hardware accessories through a USB port and can also print or emboss graphs when connected to a printer or embosser. A high-capacity rechargeable battery provides many hours of continuous operation, and an AC adapter is included to charge it. An automatic power-off feature further extends battery life. The unit comes with high-quality stereo earphones, user manual in audio and digital form, and an AC adapter/charger. The unit can also be charged while connected to a computer’s USB port. I have not heard of a language master either but it sounds interesting! As for confusing words, there are also books on BARD that list the most confusing words that might be helpful. Speaking of books, there are other books that discuss tips and tricks regarding grammar improvement. I have even found an awesome history of English spelling in braille that's also on BARD. I think it's a good read for anyone who wants to know why English is not as phenetical as our teachers like to make it out to be. Unless there is another disability involved, such as a learning disability, in which case different considerations may apply depending on the situation, I believe that blind people should be held to the same standards for grammar as sighted people. We have enough tools for grammar checking, such as the ones I mentioned in my previous email. Some people don't know about things like speech and sound schemes and the text analyzer, but they are tools that are very useful. Just my thoughts. Message-ID: Hi everyone, I have an idea for an advocacy initiative that Federationists could take on if we are interested. I am wondering if it is something that lots of student members would be interested in addressing. This email is about taking people's temperature on a topic. Some of us are familiar with the Perkins School for the Blind, one of the oldest residential schools for the blind in the United States. It's located near Boston, Massachusetts, and states outside of Massachusetts sometimes send their blind students to grow and learn at Perkins. I bet most of us do not know who the school is named after. From what I've found, his name was Thomas Handasyd Perkins. Here is a Wikipedia article about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Handasyd_Perkins I have not found a connection between this person and the Perkins family that promulgated eugenics in Vermont and throughout New England, but I'm looking. According to the Wikipedia page about him, he was one of those rich boys who received lots of money from his grandfather and father-in-law, and then he found some really noteworthy things to do with that money. According to the Wikipedia article, he became a slave trader and opium smuggler. According to the article, from these activities, he amassed a greater fortune and then used that to philanthropically support the Perkins School for the Blind, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, McLean Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital. I imagine there are a lot of people who have appreciated some of the work of some of these institutions that he may have supported with donations. If we think about the Perkins School for the Blind today, though, there seems to be a real contradiction between being a school that is supposed to provide services to a diverse group of blind students and being named after a guy who got rich as a slave trader. Being a school named after a slave trader undermines the equal treatment of people of color at the Perkins School for the Blind and the blind community more broadly because of the role of this institution in the education of the blind. Quite frankly, I think it's fair to say that continuing to celebrate Mr. Perkins by having a school named after him contributes to the ongoing marginalization of black and Indigenous people regardless of membership in the blind community, both of whom were enslaved in his day, in the New England region, and transported by ships like his. Now, the question that can have multiple answers is this: Do we want to do anything about it? I understand that we all have our priorities. Do we want to raise this conversation? Do we want to talk to the Perkins School for the Blind about renaming? Do we want to raise awareness throughout the blind community about this context of the residential school where blind kids are occasionally sent? I think this would be a good thing to do, but I'm interested in taking the temperature of Federationists before trying to do anything about it. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hey Justin, Thanks for raising an interesting and provocative topic. Notwithstanding the efficacy one way or the other of changing names or knocking down statues, I offer this recommendation from Bookshare which touches on many of the issues you mention: After the Miracle: The Political Crusades of Helen Keller [Book cover of After the Miracle: The Political Crusades of Helen Keller] By: Max Wallace Top of Form Bottom of Form Synopsis In this powerful new history, New York Times bestselling author Max Wallace draws on groundbreaking research to reframe Helen Keller's journey after the miracle at the water pump, vividly bringing to light her rarely discussed, lifelong fight for social justice across gender, class, race, and ability. Raised in Alabama, she sent shockwaves through the South when she launched a public broadside against Jim Crow and donated to the NAACP. She used her fame to oppose American intervention in WWI. She spoke out against Hitler the month he took power in 1933 and embraced the anti-fascist cause during the Spanish Civil War. She was one of the first public figures to alert the world to the evils of Apartheid, raising money to defend Nelson Mandela when he faced the death penalty for High Treason, and she lambasted Joseph McCarthy at the height of the Cold War, even as her contemporaries shied away from his notorious witch hunt. But who was this revolutionary figure? She was Helen Keller. From books to movies to Barbie dolls, most mainstream portrayals of Keller focus heavily on her struggles as a deafblind child-portraying her Teacher, Annie Sullivan, as a miracle worker. This narrative-which has often made Keller a secondary character in her own story-has resulted in few people knowing that her greatest accomplishment was not learning to speak, but what she did with her voice when she found it. After the Miracle is a much-needed corrective to this antiquated narrative. In this first major biography of Keller in decades, Max Wallace reveals that the lionization of Sullivan at the expense of her famous pupil was no accident, and calls attention to Keller's efforts as a card-carrying socialist, fierce anti-racist, and progressive disability advocate. Despite being raised in an era when eugenics and discrimination were commonplace, Keller consistently challenged the media for its ableist coverage and was one of the first activists to highlight the links between disability and capitalism, even as she struggled against the expectations and prejudices of those closest to her. Peeling back the curtain that obscured Keller's political crusades in favor of her &"inspirational&" childhood, After the Miracle chronicles the complete legacy of one of the 20th century's most extraordinary figures. Happy reading! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi, Justin. I am not officially a NABS member. But being a subscriber to the NABS-L listserv as a result of my involvement with the NABS Midwest Student Seminar this past March, I would give a qualified yes to your query. The mood of the country is mixed in respect to how we should preserve (or not) those portions of the USA's legacy that are inglorious. But I think your inquiry into the why behind the naming of Perkins School--(and don't forget the Perkins Brailler)--is quite apropos as we go through this moment of collective reflection as a country. After all, just this year we saw the renaming of Fort Bragg; even the rather conservative types who inhabit commanding positions within the U.S. Armed Services considered that a traitorous, seemingly incompetent Confederate general named Braxton Bragg was not exactly one after whom we should continue to name an acclaimed army base representing the United States. So why should the blind not take back our legacy? I would argue that it is the myriad alumni who have graduated from the Perkins School over the years that have built and sustained the legacy of this school, through how they have impacted the world in a positive way, that deserve to be venerated for the sake of posterity. Justin, I take it from your research that Thomas Handasyd Perkins (1) was not blind, (2) did not develop technology or pedagogical techniques for the blind, and (3) earned some part of his fortune through activities that now would be considered illicit and dehumanizing more or less worldwide. So while it is significant that Mr. Perkins wrote big checks to start and maintain what turned out to be an important school that has helped many, why shouldn't the stakeholders of Perkins School for the Blind pick as namesake someone who better typifies the values that Perkins School has exemplified over the years? Why not Helen Keller? If she seems a bit anachronistic, I'm sure there must be plenty of modern or postmodern exemplars who would fit the bill better. Yes, I believe this is something worth fighting for, if for no other reason than to prove that social justice is just as important, and just as needed, in supposedly progressive New England as it is in the Deep South where Confederate statues proliferate. And it is just as needed in the blind community and the deafblind community as it is in communities of color or, say, in trans communities. Just one person's opinion. Whereas I am not an alumnus of Perkins School, and whereas the Perkins School is not a part of the National Federation of the Blind, I speak only of my own feelings in this matter. "No man is an island entire of itself; "every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind." --John Donne Respectfully, -Kane (574)386-8868 (mobile) From PRESIDENT at alumni.ecu.edu Wed Jun 28 21:02:03 2023 From: PRESIDENT at alumni.ecu.edu (Justin Salisbury) Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2023 21:02:03 +0000 Subject: [NABS-L] Who Is the Perkins School for the Blind Named After? In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi again, Kane, Maurice, and everyone, Kane: Yes, I think you're right on the money with your interpretation of what was going on with Mr. Perkins. I kept looking for more information and found this page on the Perkins website, with the following passage: "Today, Perkins School for the Blind acknowledges that our school’s founding financially benefitted from both the slave trade and opium smuggling, and acknowledges the pain caused by this, particularly to those in Black and Chinese communities. The founding of Perkins highlights complex issues around slavery, race, and profit derived from the exploitation of enslaved and marginalized people. As we look to our future, it is our responsibility to acknowledge our past. Perkins is committed to confronting the truth about the people and history of our institution so as not to perpetuate narratives that obscure or diminish inhumane treatment of anyone or any group of people." https://www.perkins.org/thomas-h-perkins/ This tells me that the leadership of Perkins is already aware of at least some of the history, though it notably leaves out the enslavement of Indigenous people. Many of the Indigenous people of New England who didn’t die from European diseases or attacks were captured and sold into slavery in the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic, where he did his slave trading. Still, I think this page on their site is actually a step in the right direction, but why continue to honor a namesake when you know that he did these things? I think Kane made a great point about how there are a lot of other people who have exemplified the values that the school wishes to honor today, so maybe a new namesake would be in order. So, the question remains: should we do anything about this? "No man is an island entire of itself; "every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind." --John Donne Respectfully, -Kane (574)386-8868 (mobile) From zdreicer at gmail.com Thu Jun 29 20:15:15 2023 From: zdreicer at gmail.com (Zachary N.
