Howard opens a bicycle shop in San Francisco. He is soon selling automobiles, becoming the largest car dealer in California and one of the Bay Area's richest men. In the wake of the Great Depression, Canadian John "Red" Pollard's family is financially ruined, and he is sent to live with a horse trainer. Years pass and Pollard becomes a jockey, but amateur boxing leaves him blind in one eye. After their young son is killed in an automobile accident, Howard's wife leaves him. He obtains a divorce in Mexico, where Pollard is struggling to make his mark as a jockey. Howard meets and marries Marcela Zabala. When he acquires a stable of racehorses, he hires itinerant horseman Tom Smith as his trainer. Smith convinces him to buy a colt called Seabiscuit. Though a grandson of the great Man o' War and trained by the renowned James E. Fitzsimmons, Seabiscuit is viewed as small, lazy, and unmanageable. Smith witnesses Pollard's similarly temperamental spirit, and hires him as Seabiscuit's jockey. Under Smith's innovative training, Seabiscuit becomes the most successful racehorse on the West Coast and an underdog hero to the public. Howard issues a challenge to Samuel D. Riddle, owner of the East Coast champion and Triple Crown-winning racehorse War Admiral, but Riddle dismisses California racing as inferior. In the prestigious Santa Anita Handicap, Seabiscuit takes the lead, but Pollard's impaired vision prevents him from noticing another horse surging up on the outside. Losing by a nose, Pollard admits his partial blindness to Smith. Howard declares that Pollard will remain Seabiscuit's jockey, and rallies public support for a match race with War Admiral. Riddle agrees, on the condition that they race with a rope and bell instead of a starting gate. With Seabiscuit at a disadvantage, Smith trains the horse to break fast at the sound of the bell. As the race approaches, Pollard severely fractures his leg in a riding accident. Informed he may never walk again, let alone ride, he recommends that his friend and skilled jockey George Woolf ride Seabiscuit, advising him on the horse's handling and behavior from his hospital bed. The highly anticipated "race of the century" draws a sellout crowd, with 40 million more people listening on the radio. Seabiscuit takes an early lead until the far turn; following Pollard's advice, Woolf lets Seabiscuit look War Admiral in the eye before surging ahead, and Seabiscuit wins by four lengths, delighting the nation. A few months later, Seabiscuit injures his leg. Pollard, still recovering from his own injured leg, tends to the horse as they both heal. When Seabiscuit is fit enough to race again, Howard brings him back to the Santa Anita Handicap, but is reluctant to allow Pollard to ride and risk crippling himself for life. At the urging of Woolf and Marcela, Howard relents. Pollard, using a self-made leg brace, finds himself and Seabiscuit facing Woolf in the race. Seabiscuit drops far behind the field until Woolf pulls his horse alongside Pollard, allowing Seabiscuit a good look at his mount. With Woolf's encouragement, Seabiscuit surges ahead and passes the others. Heading for the finish line several lengths ahead, Pollard explains that the story of Seabiscuit is not merely of three men who fixed a broken-down horse, but that Seabiscuit fixed them and, in a way, they fixed one another. Cast Tobey Maguire as John "Red" Pollard Michael Angarano as Young John "Red" Pollard Jeff Bridges as Charles S. Howard Chris Cooper as Tom Smith Elizabeth Banks as Marcela Zabala-Howard Gary Stevens as George Woolf William H. Macy as "Tick Tock" McLaughlin Eddie Jones as Samuel Riddle Michael O'Neill as Mr. Pollard David McCullough as The Narrator Whitney Houston I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022) In 1983, 19-year-old Whitney Houston is being coached by her mother Cissy while leading a church choir in New Jersey. A professional singer herself, Cissy pushes her daughter to be better, though being hard on her at times. Whitney finds solace in a friendship with Robyn Crawford, which turns romantic, and they later move into their own apartment, much to the chagrin of Cissy. One night, Cissy and Whitney are set to perform at the Sweetwaters nightclub. After spotting producer Clive Davis in the audience, Cissy feigns sickness and encourages Whitney to open the show. Whitney performs "The Greatest Love of All", which impresses Davis, who immediately signs Whitney to Arista Records. He books her for her first major live performance on The Merv Griffin Show, where she gives a performance of "Home". Soon afterwards, Whitney releases a highly successful debut album, and sets up her production company, Nippy Inc., run by her overbearing father and self-appointed manager, John. When Whitney wants to hire Crawford as a personal assistant, John refuses due to their personal relationship and tells the pair to date men, to Robyn's dismay. After recording a love song with Jermaine Jackson, the two start a sexual relationship, which angers Robyn. After a fight, Robyn breaks down and Whitney ends their romantic relationship, but remain close friends. In 1987, Whitney releases her sophomore album and its leading single, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)", which makes her a crossover success. However, she is accused by a radio show interviewer of selling out and not sounding "black enough", to which Whitney angrily defends herself. Attending the Soul Train Music Awards in 1988, Whitney is met with protesters at the red carpet and her name is booed after singer Anita Baker announces her as one of the nominees for Best Music Video. Whitney meets singer Bobby Brown and the two start to date; eventually, Bobby proposes to her in their limousine, and she accepts. Shortly afterward, Bobby informs her that he impregnated his ex-girlfriend, leading an enraged Whitney to storm out of the limousine, but they quickly reconcile. In the early 1990s Whitney is at her peak, performing the "Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV and acting in the film The Bodyguard, and going on tour, performing "I Will Always Love You" at a stadium in South Africa for newly inaugurated president Nelson Mandela. Following a miscarriage, she later marries Bobby and has a daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown. One night, Whitney returns home to find Bobby gone and her credit card missing. When he returns the following morning, the two argue, resulting in her throwing him out of the house and using drugs to cope. In 1998, Clive meets with Whitney to discuss her not releasing a new studio album in over eight years, despite releasing seven major singles and starring in three films. Inspired by her tumultuous relationship with Brown, Whitney records the ballad "Why Does It Hurt So Bad", despite rejecting it several times before. Later, she confronts her father about spending too much of her money on expensive gifts, leaving her near broke, and then discovers that he has been negotiating a new $100 million contract with Arista behind her back. Later, dealing with insomnia, Whitney goes to Clive's hotel room and asks him to show her potential songs. Upon finding one she likes, a new studio album is released. She also informs Clive that she is going on tour (to stable her finances), and Clive warns her about burning out. She dismisses his worries. The following tour is exhausting, and leads to Houston having a mental and physical decline in which she descends to drug addiction, damaging her voice and reputation. Davis urges her to enter rehab, but she refuses. Near the tour's end, Robyn and Bobby argue, after the former attempts to get Whitney to return home and end the tour. In the end, she chooses to continue the tour, leading to Robyn leaving Whitney's life. Before leaving, she later tells her that her father is dying in a hospital. There, Whitney is confronted with a $100 million lawsuit from John's company. She cuts ties with her father, even refusing to attend his funeral. Cissy finds her daughter in a drug-induced haze and orders her to rehab by a police order. Eventually, Whitney sobers up, reconnects with daughter Krissy, and divorces Brown. In 2009, Houston attempts a comeback with a new album and performs one of its tracks on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Following the performance, Clive visits Whitney and she tells him that she is interested in going back on tour, but Clive advises her to rest. But she goes on with the tour, which proves disastrous and prompts walkouts due to her performance. In February 2012, Houston arrives at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles to perform "Home" at a pre-Grammy party. Her bassist Rickey advises her to call it off and rest, but she refuses. At the hotel's bar, she and the bartender reminisce. In her hotel room, a tearful Whitney begins running bath water and sings "Home" to herself while reminiscing about her life and career before dying suddenly. In a flashback, Houston sings a medley of "I Loves You, Porgy", "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", and "I Have Nothing", which is met with a standing ovation. Cast Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis, Whitney's record producer and supportive friend Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown, Whitney's husband Tamara Tunie as Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother Nafessa Williams as Robyn Crawford, Whitney's best friend and assistant. Williams also previously played another character in a 2015 television film about Whitney Houston.[4] Clarke Peters as John Houston, Whitney's strict father Dave Heard as Rickey Minor, Whitney's musical director Bria Danielle Singleton as Bobbi Kristina Brown, Whitney and Bobby's teenage daughter Bailee Lopes as young Bobbi Kristina Brown Kris Sidberry as Patricia "Pat" Houston, Whitney's sister-in-law Palmetto Zoom Event Be sure to join our Sports and Rec Division for "Get Fit Sessions" every Tuesdays at 5:30 PM and Saturdays at 9:00 AM on the below Palmetto Zoom platform! Thank you to everybody for all your well wishes, positive thoughts, and prayers as I went through a big medical emergency. I ended up with a bad case of pneumonia that ended up affecting a lot of my already existing health conditions. I am slowly regaining my health and slowly taking on responsibilities. This past month has helped me reflect on my health and I will be taking more time focusing on my health instead of pushing it off to the side. I thank those who called, texted, and showed up to help. I really, really, really appreciate all of you!” 7. I and many others will be watching the jury retrial of the Los Angeles Community College District. LACCD refuses to resolve our concerns about ongoing discrimination against blind community college students, illustrated by its past treatment of Roy Payan and Portia Mason. The trial begins on Tuesday, May 23 and is expected to last for three days. I, blind college students and interested members will be attending to show support and observe the trial. Each morning at 9:00 a.m. PT, on Tuesday-Thursday, May 23-25, we will gather in front of Courtroom 10A, 10th Floor, 350 W. 1st Street, Los Angeles, California 90012. I will also be visiting with folks during the breaks to discuss the case and what is happening in the trial. I expect we'll be going out to lunch and dinner together on May 23 and 24. I don't get many opportunities to spend time with our Southern California family. Please make a point to come say hello and advocate for our blind students. Message-ID: <0D076135-7A07-4EF4-8259-361B7A518DF7@nfbmo.org> Greetings from the Missouri Association of Blind Students, We're thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership with The DotShop, a renowned brand that shares our vision of empowerment and our values, hopes and dreams. Together, we've launched a meaningful campaign to support blind students across Missouri and we're inviting you to contribute to our fundraiser. The initiative, titled "Hope is in things Unseen", centers around two beautifully crafted products - a sturdy tumbler and a comfortable t-shirt, both designed to symbolize the resilience and potential of blind students. Each item features a powerful Braille inspired design, incorporating the word "Hope", to serve as a reminder of the strength and potential that lies within each of us, seen or unseen. By purchasing one (or both!) of these items, you will not only own a product that exudes style and purpose but also contribute directly to strengthening the lives of our blind students across the state of Missouri. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards educational resources, advocacy efforts, sending our students to the bustling NABS regional student seminars, and numerous initiatives, all aimed at uplifting and empowering our students. Now, more than ever, your support can make a significant difference. Fundraiser purchases are available until June 3, 2023; get yours now here ! http://dotshopusa.com/MOABS-fundraiserWith gratitude, The Missouri Association of Blind Students Seyoon Choi, he, him, his Board member | National Federation of the Blind of Missouri Treasurer | Missouri Association of Blind Students A proud division of the National Federation of the blind of Missouri nfbmo.org Co-chair | National Association of Blind Students Content Creation Committee A proud division of the National Federation of the Blind nabslink.org schoi at nfbmo.org Cell: (314) 650-8306 -- **Private voting is a right, it should not require sight.** The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Dear Federation Friends, Come join us May 23-25 in Los Angeles for an important legal advocacy event. 1st Street, Los Angeles, California 90012 . All are welcome to come for one or all days. College students, particularly students interested in law and digital accessibility, won't want to miss this rare opportunity to see the justice system in action. In the present day, the laundromat is being audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS); Waymond is trying to serve Evelyn divorce papers in an attempt to get her attention so they can talk about their marriage; Evelyn's stern and demanding father (referred to as Gong Gong, Cantonese for 'maternal grandfather'[15]) is visiting for her Chinese New Year party; and Joy is dealing with depression[16] and has a strained relationship with her mother, which also includes Evelyn's reluctance to accept that Joy is a lesbian as well as Joy's relationship with her non-Chinese girlfriend Becky. At a tense meeting with IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre, Waymond's body is taken over by Alpha-Waymond, a version of Waymond from the "Alphaverse." Alpha-Waymond explains to Evelyn that many parallel universes exist because every life choice creates a new alternative universe. The Alphaverse, led by the late Alpha-Evelyn, developed "verse-jumping" technology, which enables people to access the skills, memories, and bodies of their parallel selves by performing bizarre actions that are statistically unlikely. The multiverse is threatened by Jobu Tupaki (Alpha-Joy), whose mind was splintered after Alpha-Evelyn pushed her to extensively verse-jump; Jobu experiences all universes at once and can verse-jump and manipulate matter at will. She has created a black hole-like "everything bagel" topped with everything,[17] which appears as a toroid singularity[18] that could destroy the multiverse. Evelyn is given verse-jumping technology to fight Jobu's minions, who converge on the IRS building. She discovers other universes in which she made different choices and flourished, such as becoming a kung fu master and film star; she also learns of Waymond's plans with the divorce papers. Alpha-Waymond believes that Evelyn, as the greatest "failure" of all Evelyns in the multiverse, has the untapped potential to defeat Jobu. Gong Gong is taken over by Alpha-Gong Gong, who instructs Evelyn to kill Joy to stop Jobu from using her to enter Evelyn's universe. Evelyn refuses and decides to face Jobu by gaining powers through repeated verse-jumping. Alpha-Gong Gong, convinced that Evelyn's mind has been compromised like Jobu's, sends soldiers after Evelyn. While they fight, Jobu locates and kills Alpha-Waymond in the Alphaverse. As Jobu confronts Evelyn in her universe, Evelyn's mind splinters, and she collapses. Evelyn uncontrollably verse-jumps alongside Jobu across bizarre and diverse universes. Jobu reveals she does not want to fight at all, but that instead, she has been searching for an Evelyn who can see, as she does, that nothing matters, while killing the Evelyns that do not agree with her. She brings Evelyn to the everything bagel, explaining that she wants to use it to allow herself and Evelyn to truly die. Upon looking into the bagel, Evelyn is initially persuaded, and acts cruelly and nihilistically in her other universes, hurting those around her. As Evelyn is about to enter the bagel with Jobu, she pauses to listen to Waymond's pleas in her universe for everybody to stop fighting and to instead be kind, even when life does not make sense. Evelyn has an existentialist epiphany and decides to follow Waymond's absurdist[19] and humanist[20] advice, using her multiverse powers to fight with empathy[21] and brings happiness to those around her; in doing so, she repairs her damage in the other universes and neutralizes Alpha-Gong Gong and Jobu's fighters. In her home universe, Evelyn reconciles with Waymond, accepts Joy and Becky's relationship and tells Gong Gong of it, and talks with Deirdre after Waymond convinces Deirdre to let them redo their taxes. Jobu decides to enter the bagel alone while, simultaneously in Evelyn's universe, Joy begs Evelyn to let her go. Evelyn tells Joy that even when nothing makes sense and even though she could be anywhere else in the multiverse, she would always want to be with Joy. Evelyn and the others save Jobu from the bagel, and Evelyn and Joy embrace. Some time later, with the family's relationships improved, they return to the IRS building to refile their taxes. As Deirdre talks, Evelyn's attention is momentarily drawn to her alternative selves, before she grounds herself back in her home universe. Cast (Clockwise) Everything Everywhere All at Once stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and James Hong (not pictured is Stephanie Hsu) Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Quan Wang, a dissatisfied and overwhelmed laundromat owner; and as several other versions of Evelyn in alternate universes. Stephanie Hsu as Joy Wang, Evelyn's daughter; and Jobu Tupaki, Alpha-Evelyn's omnicidal daughter whose growing nihilism is a threat to the entire multiverse. Ke Huy Quan as Waymond Wang, Evelyn's meek and goofy husband whose humanist existentialism is the antidote to Jobu's nihilism; and as Alpha-Waymond, from the Alphaverse; and other versions of Waymond in alternate universes Jenny Slate as Debbie the Dog Mom, a laundromat customer. Her original name of Big Nose was changed for the film's digital release because of its association with Jewish stereotypes.[22] Harry Shum Jr. as Chad, a teppanyaki chef working alongside an alternative Evelyn in another universe. James Hong as Gong Gong (Cantonese for 'grandfather'[15]), Evelyn's demanding father; and Alpha-Gong Gong, Alpha-Evelyn's father in the Alphaverse who wants Evelyn to sacrifice Joy to impede Jobu. Jamie Lee Curtis as Deirdre Beaubeirdre, an IRS inspector; and as other versions of Deirdre in alternate universes. Manchester By The Sea Run Time 2 hours and 17 minutes Run time R Lee Chandler is a depressed and asocial janitor who lives alone in a basement apartment in Quincy, Massachusetts. One day, he receives a phone call informing him that his brother Joe, a fisherman who lives in Manchester-by-the-Sea, has suffered cardiac arrest; Joe dies before Lee can make it to the hospital. Lee insists on being the one to tell Joe's teenage son Patrick about his father's death. While making funeral arrangements, they are reminded Joe's body cannot be buried until spring as the ground is frozen. Lee makes plans to remain in Manchester, living in Joe's house until the delayed burial. When Lee meets with Joe's attorney he is shocked to discover Joe named him as Patrick's legal guardian. Flashbacks reveal that Lee once lived in Manchester with his then-wife Randi and their three small children. One night after hosting a raucous party, an intoxicated Lee forgot to put the screen in front of the fireplace, leading to a house fire that killed his children. No criminal charges were filed against him, as the police ruled it a tragic accident. However, at the station, a guilt-ridden Lee stole an officer's gun and attempted to shoot himself dead, before being subdued. Lee and Randi subsequently divorced, and he left town. He is reluctant to commit to the guardianship, as it would require him to move back to Manchester. Plans are begun for Patrick to move to Boston with Lee but Patrick has strong ties to the Manchester community and stubbornly objects. Lee commits to staying until the end of the school year. Patrick wants to live with his estranged mother Elise, who still lives in the area. Lee is opposed to this as her history with alcoholism led her to abandon her family, but Patrick decides to reconnect with her over lunch. Elise has committed to Christianity and sobriety with her fiancé Jeffrey, but during an awkward meal with them, Patrick finds he is unable to connect with her. He is further unsettled when Jeffrey emails him and insists on being an intermediary in any future communication between them. Lee's positive comments about Elise's sobriety lead Patrick to believe his uncle is trying to get rid of him, assertions Lee denies. In response to this strain in their relationship, Lee takes steps to possibly extend his stay in Manchester and seeks to spend more time with Patrick. Over time, they re-establish their bond, despite conflicts over Joe's boat, Patrick's girlfriends, and their future living arrangements. However, staying in Manchester is still painful for Lee, as he is surrounded by reminders of his past. One day, Lee runs into Randi with her newborn child. A sobbing Randi expresses remorse for her treatment of Lee during their divorce and asks him to have lunch. He deflects her apology, feeling that he does not deserve it. When she insists they reconnect and pleads with him not to "just die", Lee is overwhelmed with emotion and has to leave before he breaks down. Distraught, Lee gets drunk at a bar, picks a fight with strangers, and is knocked out. He wakes up in the living room of Joe's friend George and breaks down in tears. At home, Patrick shows his uncle deference after seeing his battered state and pictures of his deceased children. Lee arranges for George and his wife to adopt Patrick so that he can remain in Manchester while Lee takes a job in Boston. When Patrick asks Lee why he cannot remain in Manchester, Lee says that he "can't beat it." During a walk after Joe's burial service, Lee tells Patrick he is searching for a residence in Boston with an extra room so Patrick can visit whenever he wants. In the final scene, Lee and Patrick go fishing on Joe's refurbished boat, which Patrick has inherited. Cast Casey Affleck as Lee Chandler, a grief-stricken loner Lucas Hedges as Patrick Chandler, Lee's 16-year-old nephew and charge Ivy O'Brien as young Patrick[note 1] Michelle Williams as Randi, Lee's ex-wife Kyle Chandler as Joseph "Joe" Chandler, Lee's brother and Patrick's father C.
