We met briefly at the Missouri National Federation of the Blind Conference in St. Louis earlier this year. Thank you for allowing me to speak to some of your student members at that event. However, I am still looking for people from the ages of 20 to 30 to complete an interview as part of my master's thesis. I wanted to know if you had any advice on where I could share this information or if you would be willing to share my information with your members. Her is my recruitment information below and I have also attached a flyer. We want to collect information about adults with blind and visual impairments experiences during high school. Specifically, their perceptions on assistive technology services, career services, and how their use of assistive technology impacted their independence and quality of life then and now. I am seeking approximately 15 participants to participate in a 45-minute interview. Participants must be over 18 years, participate in special education services in high school, and use assistive technology. Participant involvement is entirely voluntary and requires one 45-minute interview. There will be time for additional comments the participant would like to discuss. There are 18 interview questions, and these questions will have topics like what is involved in their transition plan, what kind of assistive technology they use, and how they feel these areas have helped them prepare for future employment after high school. All personal information will not be associated directly with the participant during the study. All data will be secured in a password protected computer on Southeast Missouri State University's campus in Grauel112F. This data will only be accessed by the student and lead researcher of this study. This study will add more perspectives regarding transitional services for blind high school students. The study will provide retrospective perceptions from blind adults and will provide information to allow educators to adjust services to contribute to practical and successful outcomes for people who are blind and visually impaired. This study can also provide information for effective collaboration with professionals on an individualized education plan team to create meaningful and beneficial services for this population and their future careers and success. This information can create a better system for future students. The study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Southeast Missouri State University. If you have any unanswered questions or concerns about your rights as a research participant, contact the Institutional Review Board at irb at semo.edu or call Jennifer Bengtson, IRB chair, at (573) 651-2146. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for your time and any help you can give me. If you have any questions, please contact me or Dr. Jayanti Ray. Thank you for your time! I am running JAWS version 2023.2307.37. I have configured the German profile as follows: - For Contracted Braille, Use: German Grade 0 - When using Computer Braille For Output, Use: European Unicode - When using Computer BrailleFor Input, Use: European Unicode - By Default, Use: Contracted Braille - Use Liblouis for Computer Braille: Not checked - Suppress Capital Signs: Not checked Additionally, I have configured the checkboxes within the “Language Profiles” dialog as follows: - Link Braille Input Language To Keyboard Language: Checked - Automatic Language Detection: Checked >From my understanding of JAWS, the above configuration should allow display of uncontracted German but with capital letters indicated. In terms of accommodations for your ASL course, I imagine you could try out a couple of different options. One thing I might do is to have the professor verbally describe the different signs and how you would use your hands to execute them, since ideally your sighted classmates would be able to use their vision to see that right off. Then, you could ask the professor to make sure you're doing the signs correctly since you can't see them visually. Another possibility is to have your school's disability support services hire someone to work with you in that class, whether that be a fellow student or even a professional ASL interpreter if at all possible. Again, that person would show you the different signs tactually, and then make sure you're doing them correctly. Again, I've never taken any ASL classes (in fact I don't know any at all despite being hard of hearing), although I do hope this info is helpful in getting your accommodations. As far as learning the tactile signs that actual deaf-blind people use, unfortunately I don't really have any ideas for that. Good luck with your upcoming class! Depending on the situation, the professor may be able to find (accessible) alternate readings that cover the exact same thing, but I know that's not always possible. My suggestion would be too run OCR and just see how accurate it is, because OCR results certainly vary depending on PDF quality. Is there any chance disability services could OCR the document and then fix the errors or something like that, rather than just doing OCR and giving the document straight back to you with no corrections? But the disability office I'm currently working with does at least a cursory read of thetext when they ocr. This doesn't catch everything, obviously, but it does catch if there are multiple-word errors and then they can type the appropriate words in. You might want to ask if your support office would be willing to do this. Another thing I've found helpful is to offer a barter with a sighted student: I'll look over your papers and provide feedback if you'll look over my text scans and make sure there's not something I'm obviously missing. Since the pdfs from professors are often not of ideal quality, the other student is usually pretty glad to have a text copy to verify themselves. It wasn't originally designed for this, but it is very good at using OCR and either doing very thorough summaries of the contents of each page or simply giving the entire text to you. You will need a Chatgpt paid account for this to work properly. I have also worked with pdf files on claude.ai, but can't remember if it supports OCR or not. Hope this helps! My inclination is to simply perform OCR on these scans (I typically use VoiceDream Reader), but I do fear that I will miss some things this way. I've talked to Disability support, but there only suggestion is that they could run OCR for me, which doesn't really change the situation. I'm curious what people would recommend. To be clear, class readings may come from three different books per class period, so other students are not expected to get the actual books. > > Thank you so much for the help in advance, > Julia > _______________________________________________ > NABS-L mailing list > NABS-L at nfbnet.org > http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nabs-l_nfbnet.org > To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for NABS-L: > http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nabs-l_nfbnet.org/ignasicambra%40gmail.com From ammar.tarin at gmail.com Sun Sep 17 03:09:22 2023 From: ammar.tarin at gmail.com (Ammar Tarin) Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2023 20:09:22 -0700 Subject: [NABS-L] Come one, come all! A new YouTube video published by a self-described Rideshare expert will test Lyft’s commitment to complying with state and federal law while upholding its driver terms and conditions. In this offensive video, a Lyft driver expresses his opposition to transporting service animals by contending that “Lyft forces drivers to transport service animals”. The fact this ignorant, ablest rant misses is that it is not Lyft requiring this driver to transport us with our service animals. It is state and federal law! In addition to demonstrating his willingness to violate our legally protected civil rights and encourage others to do so, what he asserts are the same lies and misinformation that lie at the heart of our struggles for equal participation in society on terms of equality. He asserts service animals are dirty and smelly, leaving dog hair all over the vehicle, licking the backs of the seats and drooling on the floor. He contends carrying service animals “does not make good business sense”. It is our hope that you will join us to tell Lyft and this fool that violating our civil rights is what does not make good business sense! Finally, this individual’s ignorance is further illustrated in his assertions that people have brought service rabbits and snakes into his vehicle, asserting he is being “forced by Lyft” to transport these creatures. Since service animals are only dogs and, in some circumstances, miniature horses, the absurdity of his rant is on full display. Advocates for Service Animal Partners has contacted Lyft and YouTube concerning this issue. We have demanded that Lyft stand in solidarity with service animal handlers by immediately and permanently deactivating this driver’s account, publicly denouncing this video, advising drivers that following this ill-informed advice will lead to immediate, permanent deactivation of the driver’s Lyft account, and advise Advocates for Service Animal Partners when these steps are taken so we can publicize it widely and send the message that we will not tolerate the denial of our civil rights. We have also asked that YouTube remove the video because it violates its user terms and conditions by inciting and encouraging others to participate in illegal behavior. WHAT YOU CAN DO Advocates for Service Animal Partners encourages you to contact Lyft and send them the message that you expect them to comply with state and federal law and their driver terms and conditions by permanently deactivating this driver’s profile and publicizing the deactivation as widely as possible to demonstrate Lyft’s commitment to providing full and equal access to their vehicles by service animal handlers. You can submit your complaint on the Lyft app or by calling (844) 554-1927. When you file your complaint, be sure to give Lyft the URL below so they can see it for themselves! We also urge you to go to this driver’s YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlcGCVuxORw There you will be able to hear the ignorance for yourself. While you are there, dislike the video, make your comments about how ignorant and misinformed this driver is in the comment section, and report the video to YouTube for inciting and encouraging illegal behavior. Submit comments on proposed regulations related to Web and app accessibility in schools Message-ID: Hello NABS, I used to be president of NABS, and now work as the director of research at the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB). We are urging blind students to comment on proposed regulations related to Web and app accessibility. Please read below and see link to the comments submission at the bottom of this email. Action Needed for Proposed Changes to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Regarding Web and Mobile App Accessibility October 3, 2023, is the deadline for comments on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) by the Department of Justice on the need to update the regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to add more specific requirements about web and mobile application (app) accessibility. Title II covers state and local government entities and other public entities like public school districts, public universities, and transit agencies that operate at those levels. The Department of Justice is looking for individuals like you, and your colleagues and peers, to share your experiences and opinions on whether they should have exemptions (or loopholes) that complicate the accessibility landscape. We need you to submit your public comment and share this call to action with other blind individuals. As you know, people who are blind or have low vision regularly interact with these entities. They attend or teach at public schools, they use public transit and paratransit, they vote, they file business and home construction permits, they use vocational rehabilitation services, and so much more. By requiring all entities to bring their websites into conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, we expect that people with disabilities will have increased access to public services, programs, and information; greater privacy; and greater independence. However, we are deeply concerned that this rule includes exemptions that will undermine the goals of the regulation. In order to appease entities that are concerned about the effort involved in making websites accessible, the Department of Justice has proposed seven exemptions. For example, two of the exemptions will mean that public schools and universities have to make school-wide calendars and lunch menus accessible but that coursework for students’ individual classes, including third-party apps that are accessed with a unique student login, must not be made accessible until the school is made aware that a student with a disability or a student whose parent has a disability is enrolled in the class. Then the school and teacher will have just 5 days to make all needed changes so that all of the coursework is accessible. This recommendation seems reactive and unworkable for most teachers and professors who rely on content and programs created by other people or companies. In addition, it does not seem to be substantially different from the status quo, where materials are often made accessible on a student-by-student basis. The other exemptions cover: • archived web content (e.g., a historical archive or many property records); • preexisting documents in PDF, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation formats (e.g., a 2023 report on the effect of the coronavirus pandemic); • documents that are unique to an individual and accessed with a password (e.g. utility bills or tax records); • information posted by third parties (e.g., public comment submissions or student discussion boards); and • third-party content linked to by the public entity (e.g., any content linked to by a local tourism agency). Information to Consider When Drafting Your Comment In your comment, you should say that website and app accessibility is important to you and your children, students or clients (if you have them). The department will be hearing a lot about how hard it will be to make websites accessible and that the return on investment is not worth it. Give the department information that they can use to support the strongest possible regulation. Remember the ADA's four primary goals include full participation, equal opportunity, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. Consider articulating that the education exemptions create real problems for students and staff who work with them. Consider underscoring that it would be less confusing and complicated if schools simply had to utilize accessible web and app content universally instead of following these proposed complex and unfeasible exemptions. They want to hear the benefits of web accessibility and examples of situations in which accessibility matters. If you can quantify the benefits, that is even better. For example, it might take students 2 months or more to receive an accessible version of a digital textbook, so it would be better for the publisher to create an accessible version for all students and for the school or professor to select a curriculum that is most accessible. Or you might talk about the benefits of allowing parents who are blind or have low vision to spend more time supporting their kids with schoolwork rather than troubleshooting accessibility issues. Draw on your own experiences when describing why web accessibility is important. You can also imagine a situation in which all digital tools and applications in local government and local education environments were accessible. What would the result of this accessibility be? How would accessible tools and applications benefit professors, teachers, parents, and students with visual impairments? In preparing your comment, we suggest that you write in support of a rule that requires state and local government websites and apps to be accessible without exemptions and to answer these questions: • Share your experience as a person who is blind or has low vision, or as a family member to these individuals. • What has been your experience with inaccessible state and local government entity websites and apps, including those used in schools? Is it hard to get help with or to fix an inaccessible site or app on a case by case basis? Describe some challenges. • Why does a good regulation matter? Will it save you or your loved ones time, energy, frustration, or money? • How would outcomes for students (or people with disabilities generally) be different if these websites and apps were accessible by default? How to Submit Your Comment You can submit comments through October 3, 2023 by going to Regulations.gov (https://www.regulations.gov/document/DOJ-CRT-2023-0007-0001/). If you are connected with a college, you may be able to find such opportunity, especially with Spanish being quite commonly used. I have been affiliated with a few different higher education institutions and all of them had opportunities for people to come and practice speaking Spanish without having to be enrolled in a class. I agree with the person who said it would be easier to unzip your files on the computer first, then copy them, or move them to your braille note touch. I have used 7zip for years to unzip files and it works very well. You can of course use the windows utility to unzip files, however, I feel 7zip is easier and gives you more choices. Good luck. Message-ID: <6512f94d.c80a0220.675d1.d618@mx.google.com> Hi Sara, So glad you're interested in improving your Spanish! Miso is absolutely right that connecting with an actual native speaker is realy the best way of working on your oral comprehension skills. As a matter of fact, I think I'll be able to connect you with someone who would be delighted to work with you. I'm currently pursuing my master's degree in language translation and interpreting from NYU, and this past summer, I realized that although I was still fluent in Spanish, my oral comprehension wasn't as good as it was when I was first studying the language in school. This was partly because I didn't really have the opportunity to practice since graduating from undergrad, when I majored in Romance Languages, and all my translation assignments in graduate school have always been from the source language into English (never the other way around), since English is pretty much the only common language that everyone in my program can speak. So because of that, I thought it would be really nice to brush up on my oral comprehension skills. Luckily, I was able to find someone living in my hometown of Nyack, New York (although we met on Zoom once a week) who works as a professional Spanish tutor for students from all around the world. She's originally from Argentina, but has been living here in Nyack for over thirty years now. If you'd like, I can contact you off list to give you her contact info. She certainly has a lot of experience at what she does, and she's also very kind and competent. As her (seemingly) first ever blind student, I also got the impression that she's very eager to learn how we do things on a daily basis. I'm pretty sure she's always looking for new students to both work with and learn from. I hope this info is helpful, and good luck in your language pursuits! I’m new to podcasting, but would love for you to listen and give me a feedback. The first episode is about a guy who I met in one of my classes who went to rehab eight times before he was 21. Reports: President Report: Emily is no longer a student. Emily is stepping down as President. She will do whatever she can to support the organization. Emily must write to Ohio Talk to say that she is stepping down and that Shane is President. Vice President Report: Shane is stepping up as President effective today. Contact National Level and Ohio Talk and let them know the board positions as of today. Shane spoke with other students who have expressed interest in becoming members. Emily motions to vote Shane in as President from Vice President. Caroline seconds motion. Motion passes Secretary report made by Jackson. Secretary report motion by Shane. Asia seconds the motion. Motion passes. Asia treasures Report No balance changes. Business accounts changed via Chase's policies. The monthly payment is $15.00. Since the last meeting, the charge has changed to a $15.00 service. The account balance for the student division is $400.51. No deposits to the account Asia puts a motion to pass the treasurer's report. Shane seconds the motion. Motion passes. Kinshuk joins the meeting. The raffle will have two prices for the raffle. Kinshuk suggests air tags. Do we want to replace the thermometer with an air tag or tile? Keep the Amazon Echo. Switch the thermometer out with the tile. So, it is versatile with any product, either Apple or Android. We need to see what the price is to see if the division will purchase it or not. Asia says we cannot market it as a raffle if we want to use PayPal. For nonprofits, we have to say drawing Caroline believes. Shane needs to ask the affiliate if it is okay to do so. Raffle ticket prices. We are thinking about going with the $25.00 Echo Dot. The tiles have packs of one, two, three, or four. Some packs of four are $75.00. Two packages are $55.00. Two of the keychains are $48.00. Asia thinks the keychains would be lovely. Finally, we are doing the smaller Echo Amazon Alexa devices. We are trying to see if we want to do two keychain tiles and Raffel off three items. Shane says the board must buy and store the products at someone's house until the drawing. We can get these from either Amazon or from the tile website. The Echo Dot will be $40.00. Two packs of tile would be $48.00. Shane will email the President to see the wording for PayPal. Confirm the pricing of raffle tickets. Shane motions Raffel prices are one for $5.00, two for $10.00, and five for $20.00. Caroline seconds the motion. Have people email or text for the raffle. Assign each of them a number and put it on a list. We need to decide who to send the information to for the raffles. Raffle ticket pricing motion carries. Asia will keep records of all the raffle stuff. Kinshuk will email use the marketing spill. Shane will email the affiliate president to see what we must do for PayPal. We can start the raffle in September and run it until the end of the state convention to make the drawing on the way. Shane will ask the President if we can make it to the banquet. Start it from the day we get everything together until the start of the convention, which will be November 17. Run it to the banquet of the way, which is November 18. Start date and close it on the session of Friday night on November 17. New business. Caroline mentioned doing another world trip during the convention. She has ten tickets. Maybe either Thursday or Friday night. Some of the older adults would be coming on Thursday. They are open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays. It takes twenty minutes to get there. It opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes at 10:00 p.m. Aside from Sunday, it closes at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.00. Shane is wondering if we should charge more. The minimum charge would be $12.00. Anything over and above could be a donation to the student division. Asia recommends that Caroline purchase the tickets, run the fundraiser alongside it, and either buy the tickets for the raffle or the raffle. Give the money back to Caroline. She does not have receipts for all this. The next meeting date is in two weeks, possibly a social meeting on September 15. The next business meeting is two weeks following that, on September 30. Kinshuk wanted to ask us about our NABS representative for this year. He wants to hear our thoughts. What things do we want the NABS rep to do for OABS? Express interest to NABS that we wish to be an agent. He wants to pair an NABS rep to Ohio. What strengths do they think we need for Ohio? It is customary for the host affiliate to provide the hotel for the NABS rep if OABS wants to sponsor that or something. OABS can hold the banquet and registration fee if the affiliate can handle the hotel. Suppose the OABS board needs to talk about it more. We will bring it up at the next board meeting. Finalize what we cover and the total cost in the next board meeting. Whatever the total cost is. There may be a decrease in pricing. We believe it may be $55.00 for the banquet and $25.00 for the registration fee. These prices are not yet official. We can cover this as a division. Kinshuk says one option is to convert the division into a group without the business or the board. It would be a social group and would need a re-vote to become a division again. We must put it through the board. Asia thinks we do not have enough people to run a division after this term. Get our constitution changed. The next business meeting is on September 30. The social gathering is on September 15. Shane motions to adjourn the meeting. Jackson's second motion.
