I am doing a research paper on supporting disabled university students who would want to establish a connection with a spiritual advisor/chaplain at their university. I have the following questions for those who are interested in providing feedback. Would you prefer meeting with a spiritual advisor/chaplain who is a part of the same religious tradition, a chaplain who is a part of a different religion, or an interfaith chaplain? Why? What are some reasons why you might want to be in conversation with a chaplain while in college? What spiritual/religious resources would you find helpful if a spiritual advisor/chaplain to provide? Are there blindness specific things you would like to have a spiritual advisor/chaplain know? If so, what? Applications are being accepted until April 15. What's In It for you? This year we will be awarding two $2,000 scholarships to qualified applicants who are legally blind and attending school next fall in Minnesota. In addition to the monetary award, winners will have the opportunity to attend the Annual Convention of the National Federation of the Blind during July 3-8 at our expense in Orlando, Florida, this year. At the convention, scholarship winners will have the chance to meet other blind students from throughout the country and gain valuable insights into succeeding as blind people. Additionally, both winners are required, at our expense, to attend the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota convention in the fall, dates and location still to be determined. The scholarships will be presented at the banquet of our state convention. Who can Apply and How? Candidates must be students who are legally blind and attending a post-secondary school full-time or part-time in Minnesota. In order to apply for a scholarship, complete the online application at https://nfbmn.org/scholarship-program. Be sure to include the additional required documents and send them to scholarships at nfbmn.org. A Microsoft Word version of this information and application can also be requested through the same email address. What Else is Needed Besides an Application? The following documents must also be supplied: 1. Personal essay from applicant - NFB scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic excellence and community/campus service and leadership. In your essay, discuss your academic and career goals as well as your academic, community, and/or employment experiences. Tell us about yourself and why you are a deserving recipient of the scholarship. Since the awards are restricted to legally blind people, the committee will also be interested in the techniques you use to succeed as a student who is blind. If you are a part time student, tell us how your part time status supports your educational goals. 2. Two letters of recommendation - you can send these via email to scholarships at nfbmn.org 3. Transcripts - current official transcript from institution now attending and transcripts from all other post-secondary institutions attended. If you have not yet completed one year of college study, submit a transcript from the high school you previously attended. Is There an Interview? All applicants will be contacted by a member of the scholarship committee shortly after the application deadline of April 15. A telephone interview will enable you to tell the committee more about yourself and your goals for the future. What is the Deadline? Your application, essay, letters of recommendation, and transcript(s) must be received by April 15. What if There are Questions? If you or anyone else should have any questions regarding these awards, please contact the Scholarship Committee, at scholarships at nfbmn.org or call us at (612)872-9363. Are There Other Scholarships? Additionally, the National Federation of the Blind offers 30 national scholarships each year. This is a completely separate program with a separate application process. The application deadline for that program is March 31, and arranging for an interview with our state president before the national deadline is required. If you would like more information about the national scholarships, visit http://www.nfb.org/scholarships To learn more about us and what we do here in Minnesota, please visit http://www.nfbmn.org Sincerely, NFB of Minnesota Scholarship Committee _______________________________________________ NABS-L mailing list NABS-L at nfbnet.org http://nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nabs-l_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for NABS-L: http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nabs-l_nfbnet.org/aevans.nfb%40gmail.com From aevans.nfb at gmail.com Fri Mar 1 23:27:08 2024 From: aevans.nfb at gmail.com (Asia Quinones-Evans) Date: Fri, 1 Mar 2024 18:27:08 -0500 Subject: [NABS-L] Parchment In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <002401da6c2f$fae22bc0$f0a68340$@gmail.com> I totally agree on this becoming a resolution. A little background: During the pandemic, my producing partner and I formed a non-profit company called Knock at the Gate. We wanted to create, provide entertainment for audiences, and opportunities for actors at that crucial time when theatres had closed. Rather than present theatre over Zoom, we decided to embrace an audio-only approach; not a podcast, audiobook or radio play, but a fully immersive theatrical audio experience that makes the listener feel like they are at the center of the action. Knock at the Gate has been featured on Good Day New York, NPR, and in American Theatre Magazine, Playbill Online and Broadway World. My producing partner and co-founder, Sean Hudock and I are passionate about accessibility, and the blind and visually impaired are at the top of the list; Our productions are very impactful and perfect for those the NFB serves. Information below on Knock at the Gate's current project, and a sample of our work. I am hoping you will share this with the greater community of the blind and visually impaired and give them the opportunity to partake in this audio adventure The Tempest: A Surround Sound Odyssey An immersive 3D audio adaptation of Shakespeare's final masterpiece. Streaming now through March 16 Running time: 99 minutes Ticket price: $9.99 Synopsis: Prospero the usurped Duke of Milan is marooned on an enchanted island. After honing his skills as a sorcerer, he creates a storm to shipwreck his betrayers on the island as they pass by. He uses his magic to exact his revenge until he learns the greater power of forgiveness. https://www.knockatthegate.com for more info and to reserve a virtual seat! Sample: The first scene was featured in Playbill online, here . *Use headphone for full effect* Designed for the dark and a pair of headphones this can be listened to in the comfort of your own home or anywhere with an internet connection. This magical adaptation for audio features a three-dimensional soundscape that makes the listener feel like they are at the center of the action. Listeners from 25 states and 15 different countries are loving every part of it, from the visceral soundscape that surrounds the listener and sweeps them away, to the stellar cast of actors from stage, screen and film, to a clear and easy-to-understand story. Blind Fest Las Vegas 2024 The first ever Blind Fest Las Vegas is set to take place from Thursday, July 18, to Sunday, July 21, 2024. This exclusive event is tailored for individuals that are blind or low vision aged 21 and above, promising a unique and unforgettable experience for all attendees. We believe that everyone should experience Las Vegas and all it has to offer, including individuals who are blind or have low vision. Where Will We Be Staying? We will be staying at the Flamingo Hotel, strategically positioned in the heart of the vibrant Las Vegas Strip. Renowned for its affordability without compromising on quality, the Flamingo Hotel is an ideal choice for our stay. Nevertheless, participants are at liberty to explore and partake in personal activities of their choice while in Las Vegas. Some of the activities for our trip include enjoying daily meals at the buffet, partaking in pool parties, exploring day and night clubs, visiting men and women strip clubs, trying our luck at gambling, and exploring iconic Las Vegas landmarks such as the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, the Bellagio Fountains, the Mirage Volcano, the Sphinx & Luxor Pyramid, and other notable sights. Additionally, we plan to attend paid attractions such as the High Roller Wheel, STRAT Tower Observation Deck, and Fly LINQ Zipline, as well as maximizing our time by visiting as many free attractions as possible. Every month, I have the honor of hosting a show on behalf of our affiliate, and this month I am very pleased to share with all of you my exciting guest. I will be joined by Dr. Trae Winter of ARISA Lab. Dr. Winter is an astrophysicist who specializes in solar activity. He and his team are conducting experiments and sponsoring activities to allow blind people to become active researchers and full participants during the eclipse. He will let all of our listeners know what they can do to be a part of this exciting event. I will also have a representative from the state of Ohio to talk about what we are doing in our state to help make the eclipse more accessible. Even those of you who are not located in Ohio may find this interesting as well. The show will be broadcast live this Wednesday, March 20, at 11:00 AM Eastern. Additionally, both winners are required, at our expense, to attend the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota convention in the fall, dates and location to be determined soon. The application deadline for that program is March 31, and arranging for an interview with our state president before the national deadline is required, but it is not too late to get this done.
