From yassirbohorquez at gmail.com Sun Jun 1 11:58:00 2025 From: yassirbohorquez at gmail.com (Yassir Bohorquez) Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2025 07:58:00 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Reminder: Join us for a Fun Ninety-Nine Social on QC Games this Sunday Message-ID: Hello Students and Supporters, Looking for something fun to do on the weekend of June 1st? Want to test your luck and strategy skills? The Florida Association of Blind Students (FABS) has you covered! Join us on June 1st at 8:00 PM for a night of fun and friendly competition as we host a Ninety-Nine Social this June. What is Ninety-Nine, you ask? It’s a fast-paced card game we’ll be playing on the accessible QC Games client, where each decision could be the difference between victory and losing your last token. Think of it as a game of daring card stunts, with a touch of mathematical mischief. Basic Rules: Tokens for Lives: Each player starts with 9 tokens (or however many you agree on before the game). Lose them all, and you’re out! Draw and Play: On your turn, play a card from your 3-card hand, then immediately draw a replacement. The goal is to keep the pile total from hitting the dreaded 100. Scoring Special Numbers: Hit 33 or 66 exactly: Everyone else loses a token. Hit 99 exactly: Everyone else loses two tokens. Pass 33 or 66: You, and only you, lose a token. Go over 99: You lose two tokens and end the round. Card Values: 3 to 8: Worth their face value. 9: Worth 0 – the ultimate stealth move. Face Cards (like jack of hearts, king of clubs): Always worth +10. 10: Can be +10 or -10 – a wild card for the bold. Ace: Either +1 or +11 – your call. 2: Divides the pile total by 2 if it’s even and over 49, otherwise doubles it. Special Effects: Jack: Skips the next player’s turn (or gives you a double turn in a two-player game). 4: Reverses the direction of play. Key Reminders: The 33 and 66 marks can hit multiple times in a single round, each time causing your opponents to lose tokens. Don’t forget to draw a card after you play! Forget three times, and you lose 3 tokens instantly. Whether you’re a card shark or just in it for the laughs, this game is perfect for breaking the ice and sparking some friendly competition. The social will be held on Zoom. The zoom info can be found below along with some info on QC Games. We can’t wait to see you, and get ready for a night full of luck, strategy, and good vibes! My name is Mariam Fahmy, and I’m currently interning with Pneuma Solutions, exploring unique accessibility tools capable of better supporting our needs as blind students. I just wanted to quickly share something that’s been genuinely useful to me as a blind student—especially when it comes to dealing with inaccessible readings and scanned class materials. It’s called *Scribe for Documents*, and it’s a tool that converts inaccessible files (like scanned PDFs of journals, class syllabi, books, etc.) into formats we can actually read—like HTML, Word, audio, BRF, and accessible pdfs (with large print if you want). You can upload a file directly or use a browser extension, then it takes a few seconds, and then you're good to go! I’ve used it to adapt numerous class readings that were PDFs of scanned images of text (journal and research articles and book chapters), and I was honestly surprised by how clean and readable the output was. It added headings, clean tables, handled images with descriptions, and didn’t turn everything into one giant text blob like some other tools I’ve used. 😊 What really stood out to me is that Scribe was developed by blind developers. You can tell—it feels like it was made by people who actually understand what we deal with when trying to access class content. It's not flawless (complicated Math and graphics are still being worked on), but for readings and documents, it’s been a huge help! If you're curious to learn more about it, you can check it out at scribeit.io, or feel free to reach out! My email is mariam.fahmy at pneumasolutions.com . Just thought this might help someone else avoid a late-night accessibility scramble! Take care, Mariam Fahmy Intern; Pneuma Solutions mariam.fahmy at pneumasolutions.com From kaleighjb17 at gmail.com Wed Jun 11 21:26:37 2025 From: kaleighjb17 at gmail.com (Kaleigh Brendle) Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2025 17:26:37 -0400 Subject: [NABS-L] Urgent: Legislative Alert Regarding Accessibility Features in Public Buildings In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: NABS, Please see the below message from John Pare. The Department of Energy is trying to put a new rule into effect that would take away certain accessibility requirements for new construction of buildings for programs or activities getting federal assistance. This covers accessible features such as Braille signs and auditory announcements in elevators. It is slated to take effect on July 15th, but we have a few more days to try and stop it. Please follow John Pare’s instructions to leave a comment on this rule, all comments need to be in by June 16th. Best, Kaleigh ___ Dear Federation Family: On May 16, 2025, the United States Department of Energy released a direct final rule that “rescinds certain new construction requirements related to disability nondiscrimination in federally assisted programs or activities.” A direct final rule is slightly different from the typical rulemaking process, it’s a kind of fast-track effort to put a new rule in place unless there are “significant adverse comments” which oppose the rule by June 16, 2025. As you may expect, we are adamantly opposed to any attempt to roll back any accessibility requirements in the construction of buildings for federally assisted programs or activities. Just last week, President Riccobono submitted the official comments of the National Federation of the Blind to the Department of Energy opposing the rescinding of the requirements. These comments are posted on the policy statements page of our website, and we encourage you to read them. But, more important than that, we urge you to submit your own comments to the Department of Energy to ensure they understand just how important accessibility is to us. Tell them how important Braille signage is in buildings, or how vital nonvisually accessible information is in an elevator. When writing your comments, you might say something like: “My name is [NAME], and I live in [CITY, STATE]. I urge you to withdraw the direct final rule. As a blind person myself, I know the importance of accessible public buildings and architecture. Without accessible features such as Braille signage on doors and Braille and audio announcements in elevators, blind people are unable to independently navigate these facilities. Again, I urge you to withdraw the direct final rule.” You can submit your comments online through the Federal Register page at: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/05/16/2025-08535/rescinding-new-construction-requirements-related-to-nondiscrimination-in-federally-assisted-programs#open-comment The link will take you directly to the submission page where you will be able to type in your comment, selecting the option to confirm that you are an individual, and verifying that you understand your comments may be publicly viewed on the website. Remember, time is of the essence because the comment submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Monday, June 16, 2025. We apologize that we did not get this information to you sooner, but there is still time to leave your comment. This may cost extra if there is transportation involved. We will determine a price for that if it comes up. I have several payment methods including Cash App, Zelle, and Square. With square I can send you an invoice, if we are in person together, I can take direct payment, or you can book on my website and pay that way. I am doing most of my booking schedule via Square, but if you need to schedule a different day and time than is available on my booking website we can discuss that. I do have several google forms that need to be filled out so that you can help me with your information so we can work on what goals you have and how to go forward with those goals. If you are unable to complete them, we can discuss how else I can get you information so we can work together. If you are interested in donating to my business for costs to keep up serving people with disabilities here is my Cash App and Zelle info below. If you just want to save the link for later usage for payments that is great also. Cash App: https://cash.app/$aqevans97. Zelle is not an option just yet. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Even in years when our priorities had nothing to do with healthcare, I have had that experience. Something about saying that we are a group of blind people seems to tell them that we must be there to talk about healthcare, like the only thing we could possibly care about is trying to cure our blindness. Have you ever tried to work with a local eye doctor's office to try to share information about the NFB so that maybe they could tell more blind people about us? Sometimes, these conversations can be difficult. Through trial and error, I think I have stumbled upon a framework for talking about our work that has worked pretty well with healthcare professionals and health policy folks. As you may know, we often publish the Braille Monitor online a day or two before the month for which the issue is named. Today, or maybe late last night, the July 2025 issue was published online. I was blessed to publish an article this month about this topic. Here is the full title of the specific software package my class will be using if anyone has experience with it or something similar: MyLab IT with Pearson eText for GO! 2021 with Technology in Action Most of the class focuses on basic computer skills and Microsoft Office sweet skills, so I’m sure that if I needed to I could work out an alternative mode of assignment completion with the professor, but right now I really just want to know if there’s a reasonable chance I could use the software that everyone else is using. If anyone has recent experience with these kinds of Pearson products you can share, that would be great.
