NABS,
We know that there’s been a lot of communication within the Federation
recently about the current attack on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
of 1973. We’ve learned that 17 states are suing the Department of Health
and Human Services, claiming that Section 504 is unconstitutional, and now
Health and Human Services agrees with that claim. We know that this case
the 17 states have filed, which is called Texas v. Kennedy, might raise a
lot of questions about what could happen to the law, and what that would
mean for each of us as blind students. The Advocacy Committee’s March DARE
call is going to answer those questions for you. On Sunday, March 23rd at 8
PM Eastern in the NABS Zoom Room, you’ll hear from members of our committee
and disability rights attorneys about what Section 504 does, how the case
of Texas v. Kennedy is attacking the law, and what we can all do about it.
After the informational section of the call is over, there will be an
opportunity for a facilitated discussion where anyone is welcome to share
any thoughts, comments, questions, or feelings they have about the case and
its implications. If anyone has any questions in advance of the call,
please feel free to reach out to me at kaleighbrendle at gmail.com. Thank you
all so much
