[nagdu] Pet tags on the beach

Hi Wayne,

For what it's worth, I definitely agree with everyone that you should not
take any extra steps to reassure the authorities that your dog is allowed on
a public beach. As I mentioned in a previous email, I've often been
accosted by police on the beach. I simply tell them she's a guide or
service dog, and that's what you need to do as well. Unless we're taking
a walk on the beach, I take off the harness so she can relax. When we go
into the water, I keep her on a long leash, a really old one I hasten to
add! Unless the beach has a policy of allowing dogs, I feel I don't have
the right to let her run loose. She would do the very things which cause
the "no dogs" policy in the first place. She would relieve anywhere, and
run up to greet sun bathers on their towels. And I'd have no way of knowing
if she had gotten hold of some stinky and/or poisonous dead fish. I really
feel as a blind person I have to keep her close to me so I can monitor her
activities, but we can still thoroughly enjoy the beach. My husband always
likes the fact that she's a great "chick magnet"!

Go have fun!

Sherrill

Julie,
I disagree with the need for any sort of tags, even if out of harness
"enjoying the beach". Whether in harness or not, the dog is still a service
animal under the law and no further restrictions or requirements can be
imposed. As for the Credentials" cited by Cindy Lou and the education by
Mike Hingson, take the time to educate, if you wish, but give them a sound
education by not presenting credentials. Otherwise, they may feel as if they
have the right to require them and they do not! HTH!

Fraternally yours,
Marion
