Martingale actually refers to two different things.
The strap on a guide harness that goes between the dog's front legs and
attaches to the belly strap.
and
A collar made of two main pieces, a solid piece that goes around the front
portion of the neck and a loop at the back of the neck. the leash attaches
to the loop at the back of the neck, when the leash is pulled it makes the
loop tighten the main portion of the collar. There are lots of different
styles of martingale collars. Prong collars are a type of martingale. Other
materials used include: leather, nylon and combinations of chain with either
leather or nylon. Some adjust to fit, others have to be purchased in the
precise size. Some slip over the dog's head and others have some sort of
buckle.
