I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses and follow up with the
situation. I took the document that Ed and Tony sent from Project Action
but didn't have to use it yet but will keep it filed away s it's a great
reference and still may be needed along the way. It gave me the
information, though, that I needed to go to present the situation.

Today, I attended an Accessible Transportation Committee meeting and brought
the issue before the chair of the committee who, in turn, connected me with
the people I needed to speak with about this situation. For now, the person
who manages the reservations and probably much more of our accessible
transit program agreed that we should not be denied a ride and it should not
be an issue at the time of pick-up. He was planning to send out a notice to
the reservationists and drivers that they could not hassle us about our
service dogs or deny us rides and that we should not have to indicate that
we travel with a service dog each time we make the reservation.

We'll see what happens with myself and others who have been having problems
with our handivan service and hopefully things will go better. I appreciate
it, though, that many of you sent suggestions and information that was
helpful for me to present the situation in a clear manner and gave me the
assurance that I was on track.

Aloha,
Charlene

Dan,

I think it's sort of like raising children. The neighbors always know more
about how it should be done than you. Especially if they don't have any of
their own. (grin) Joy and Belle

Why is it that everyone knows more about blindness than we do--sarcastic

Ron,

It seems the airlines are confused about bulkhead seating. I flew to
Montana last month and on the way back from Montana to New Orleans the
flight attendant was just all kinds of sure that I wanted to be in the
bulkhead. I hate the bulkhead because there is no foot room. I would
rather sit in a regular seat so that my dog can back under the seat in front
of me and lay out of the way and give me some room. The flight attendant
told me that "it was the law that blind people with dogs sit in bulkhead."

Eventually things got straightened out but gur.
I know many assistance dog handlers like bulkhead, especially handlers with
larger dogs or dogs who can't for whatever reason fit under the seat in
front. However there are some of us who would rather not sit there and I
just hope that one day I can fly without a huge production about where I
sit, grin.
