[nagdu] making a plan for your dog

This question came up for a friend of ours recently when she became ill and
had to be away from home for a time with no one to care for her pet dogs.
She lives alone and doesn't have many friends or family locally.

Do you have a plan for care of your dog should you be unable to care for it?
If you have family members, do they know how to keep your dog's training up
as they walk and otherwise care for it?

If you live alone, do you have a plan for who to call or how to get your dog
to its care takers?

Our friend contacted her vet and they are boarding the dog for a few days
until a tech is off and she will take the dog home with her.

We were thinking about what to do if something happened to one or both of
us. Either of us can care for both dogs for a period, but should we both be
incapacitated, we decided to put it in writing that the dogs are to be sent
back to the guide dog school.

I'm sure most schools would assist with such times if possible but even
getting the dogs to the airport, etc., takes some planning.

It was something I'd never thought about and something I thought I'd bring
up on a couple lists to see how folks have handled things if it has ever
happened to you.
