Buddy and all,
I work a Doberman mix and I love my Doberman. If I have it my way,
all of the rest of my guide dogs will be Dobermans or Dobe mixes. My
dog is black and rust, and while most people think "LAB!" when they
see her because she's mostly black and about lab-sized, she does have
the rust mask on her face and I have gotten questions about my breed
choice. I live in a hot climate where my second favorite breed, the
golden retriever is pretty miserable and allergic to mostly
everything. Also I have a vestibular disorder and need a taller dog
to assist with balance issues. Laveau, my Dobe is 26 inches high.
Most labs will not get that tall and the ones who do are males. I
would rather work with a bitch and I have never met a lab bitch that
tall. I know of GSD bitches that tall but I don't really want to work
with a GSD. They are just not the right breed for me.

We are all different, with different needs and closing ourselves off
to three or four breeds would do more harm than good. Also there are
many people, who for whatever reason, need a smaller service dog.
Maybe the dog is a hearing dog for a person who is D/deaf/hard of
hearing.
Maybe the dog is a medical alert dog and doesn't need to be large.
As you said Buddy, there are more types of assistance dogs out there
than just guide dogs.
