Hi Mardi,
If I remember right, Curly Coated Retrievers are used in England.  I asked 
about them here and they said that the Curlies matured much later than Labs 
do.  I had a groomer back in the early 1990s who had several show Curlies - 
black ones and chocolate ones.  They were kind of hyper but nice dogs.  One 
of her dogs was pictured in Dog Fancy Magazine.
