I disagree with part of what you say Marion. When we do this type of
demonstration it is usually after these usually junior high age students
read such books about people like Helen Keller and Tom Sullivan which they
see Blind people can and do and live successful lives. This is not a whoa
look at the poor blind person thing I have never lead a pity party and never
will. We use this as a tool. Kids are full of questions on how we do things
and this is a way to help them understand it. I have lived for 38 years of
off and on blindness and I was told at the age of 12 that someday I would
loose all my vision and I never once thought death would be better. The eye
disease that I have I would go to bed at night not knowing whether I would
wake with sight or not so I know allot about waiting for the inevitable. As
you know vision loss affects each person different just like grief people
have their own way of handling it. This type of demonstration we use is also
approved by our low vision specialist.
