Of course if a professor says no recording, that's different.  Even then,
I'd go to that person and explain why I need to have a recording.  Some will
relent, some won't.  I'm not sure if this would fall under reasonable
accommodations, but it might, especially if you do not write print or
Braille.  Unless a professor had specifically stated that he did not wish
his lectures to be recorded, I wouldn't ask...I'd just go ahead, assuming it
was okay.  I rarely recorded lectures, as I was a good Braille note taker.
I felt as if hearing most lectures once was plenty (grin)  But certainly
everyone's situation is different.

Just out of curiosity, may I know the source from which you learned that you
do not have to have permission to record lectures?  Usually it is not a
problem for me, but there are cases in which the professor does not allow it
for certain reasons.

Hi Katrin,

Please remember that no one can tell you that you can't bring your dog with
you to campus, as it is the law.  People have been using guide dogs on
college campuses for decades, so it's nothing you should be concerned about,
nor should you ask permission, as it is your right to have your dog with
you.  You also do not have to get permission to record college lectures.

It's a very good idea to go to campus in advance, when it's not so crowded
and when you aren't under pressure to find your next class.  I worked my
first dog on a very large campus, the University of Illinois, and we always
did what you've mentioned here, that is, find the building and specific room
in advance.  i'm sure you and James will be fine.

Thank you all for the advice.  I will be commuting to campus from my home,
about a 30min commute via the train then subway then bus, so no need to
worry about on-campus housing.  James and I have done routes like that
before so once I learn the train schedule and where the subway and bus stops
are I'm not too concerned about that being an issue.  What I am more
concerned about is learning routes on such a large campus (I'll be going to
UMass Boston).  But James is rather good at learning to guide me to specific
places so I think if we go early enough before school starts and practice,
practice, practice the routes, we should be ok.  Thanks for the idea on
looking into a GPS whomever that was.  That might be a good thing for me as
when I get really, really lost I tend to panic and everything starts to look
the same and my ability to remember left and right goes out the window, even
with a map and I'm generally pretty good with maps as long as I study them
well beforehand.

I am planning to go back to school for engineering.  That's what I
originally went for 7 years ago and what I'm still interested in.  I'm
looking into the college's disability office to see what I have to do to be
allowed to do things like tape record lectures and things like that and
James of course will go with me when I stop in there so I'm going to assume
they'll know about him that way and I guess if they have any issues they'll
bring it up then, but I hope it will be as you folks say and a non issue.
