Julie,

Another thought about the purse. If the strap on the purse doesn't have
enough holes to adjust it, just punch some more holes in it.

Thanks!  That's how I'm wearing my current purse, but the shoulder strap 
isn't quite long enough.   It gets caught on the hood of my coat and is 
generally a giant pain to get off.  Next time I'm at the store I'll look to 
see if they make ones with any longer straps.
