[nagdu] Sticks

Benny used to have a thing for sticks, too. But one horrible day, he was
running around with a stick and somehow it hurt him and made him scream.
We spent the rest of the day at the vet, trying to figure out if he'd
swallowed it or otherwise gotten seriously hurt. Luckily he hadn't. But
he decided sticks were terrible, dangerous things, and doesn't mess with
them now, so far as I can tell. He also decided for a while that the yard
was dangerous, and didn't like to go out there, but now it's OK again.
When I was in the hospital this summer, we asked a neighbor to come over
and let the dogs out at lunchtime, so my husband could stay visiting me.
The neighbor said she and Ben had fun playing with a stick. I was very
surprised, since I didn't think Ben had played with a stick since one hurt
him.

I don't know how to stop a dog picking up sticks, if he's off-leash. Some
dogs just like sticks, I guess. I suppose it has a satisfying feel in the
mouth. You could try bringing out a bone, to see if it's more fun than a
stick. A bone you don't mind losing out in the yard, though.

> I have had several dogs, where the yard was wonderful.
> Toys were grate, and the stickse had to fend for themselves.
