I wouldn't have regretted it because I would have learned something--
gained some kind of knowledge from the experience. Also I would have
saved Laveau's life and would have found her a wonderful pet home.
She was about to be euthanized and while I don't make a habit of
taking last-chance dogs and while saving her life wasn't my main
intent, I wouldn't have regretted doing it because guide or no, she's
a wonderful dog.
This is not to say that I probably wouldn't have been frustrated and
discouraged and upset if she hadn't made the grade. Thank goodness
she did! Picking the dog is the worst part of owner training IMHO!
I'm not a gambler, and the dog-picking-part is a huge gamble. Even if
you do all the research possible, even if you go with a dog from a
wonderful breeder, take that dog and socialize it well, give it the
best medical care and do all the "right things," it's still a huge
chance you are taking.
