The GDF, I am not sure if it is from the rivets as you dsay or the leather.
I will take another look to see what is what.

Alex,
What schol did you get your dog from? I ask because I had the same problem 
of stained fur when I had a dog from GDA.  The staining occured where the 
rivets were located on the harness. they were made of copper.  I have no 
staining problem with my Seeing Eye harness - their rivets are made of some 
other metal.
