Hi Jennifer,
If you are an adult and living on your own, you don't have to worry so much
about how your family views guide dogs. I'd say, just get the dog and let
them all see - the dog sells itself - and they'll soon come around. But
being on their case about it constantly will just cause them to dig in their
heels just to be contrary! (grin!)

Please just let it go with them. They'll come around - you'll see.

We all have to realize that our parents aren't always going to agree with
what we do to live our lives. You have to live your life as an adult and you
can't live it while looking for approval all the time. Yes, we want our
families to accept what we do, but it doesn't always happen. Live your
life, be a respectful and responsible adult and your parents will soon see
you as a competent adult capable of making good choices in her life.

My mother was so upset and in a tizzy about the prospect of me moving to
Vermont - way across the country from where we live. She didn't talk to me
much but she did talk to my sister and I heard from her. My mother was
worried that I'd be gone and she'd die without having seen me before she
would die. Heavy stuff as my parents are in their 80s. And several years
ago, she almost did die without seeing me - and we live locally!

I decided not to move to Vermont, not because my Mom was upset about it. I
didn't move because I found that it wasn't the best thing for myself. If
the move was going to be a plus for me and it would make my life better, I
would have moved.

So, Jennifer, live your life and make your decisions based on what you feel
is best for you. Will you make mistakes in life, yes you will. It is how
you deal with those mistakes and how you learn from them. Yes, you'll
always be your mother's kid - I certainly am and I'm 59 years old! LOL

So, don't worry. Your family loves you and they'll soon come around when
they get a look at that sweet guide dog and see you competently moving
around living your life. (grin!)

Regards,

Lyn and Landon
